I have come a long way in being able to say with confidence that I have learnt the art of living. It did not come easy specially when my being over sensitive spoilt it all.
No matter what the situation there are always two sides to it - negative and positive. Looking at the positive side was never in my way of thinking which led to many a sleepless night, until I came across this book written by Norman Vincent Peale - The Power of Positive Thinking.

It is clearly written there that every situation no matter how grim it may seem there is a positive side to it and it is for us to look for what is positive in there.

Finally I have come to believe that it is not how much we have but making the best of what we have is the root to happiness.

I used to be a wreck trying various strategies to cope with life but they all came a cropper. The issue is, most people acquire happiness in this life through material possessions which is temporary at the expense of joy which is psychological and independent of circumstances. I found in in my Christian faith.

I can't say that I subscribe to the "power of positive thinking" concept. Though I do have a colleague that practices said and it does seems to work for him. I prefer sticking to facts, however pleasant or disturbing. I've always found the philosophical school of thought known as Stoicism to be a good way to look at the world: informed by a system of logic and not being ruled by emotion.

Sticking to facts is the first step. One cannot skip that and expect to sort out issues. Power of positive thinking is a state where one has the ability to pick that which is positive no matter what the issue and with this mind step one can go through adversities with a smile and tackle them without buckling down.

Talking about the power of positive thinking... has anyone ever heard of Joe Dispenza? What do you all think of him? Real or a crook?

I too am a catholic and brought up with the idea of attaining happiness without too many material possessions. This with the advice I got reading what was written in the book Power of Positive Thinking has helped me live a life of total contentment - forever being in the attitude of gratitude

I have not heard of Joe Dispenza. Why do you have doubts about him being a real or a crook? It would have been nice if you talked a bit about him here so that those like me who have not heard about him could get some idea. I am contented with the book I have referred to here that helped me a lot to change my way of thinking.

Joe Dispenza claims to be able to heal illness or disabilities with positive thoughts. He also claims he is a neuroscientist. (And this comment of mine would probably receive a warning or be cleaned up by his crew as the other negative comments about him online.)

I do not know if he is the real deal or a crook. But I am just a skeptic that power of the mind alone can heal broken bones. I believe in a combination of practising what your doctor would advise, medication and also positive thinking, NOT just sitting around and wishing for an illness to disappear.

There is a huge difference between this person and the recommendations of Norman Vincent Peale. In that book we study the art of searching for things that are positive in every situation. We depend on ourselves and not on others as you say your guy can wish a disease to disappear:)

    I'll check out Norman. :D

Yeah, how is it possible to just wish for an illness to disappear, as much as you believe in the power of the mind???????

This book teaches one to handle any situation independently and strangely some positive streak, no matter how serious a situation is, can be found and one can go about dealing with it quite calmly.

Hallo Iamwriter; Well I used to be very negative about absolutely everything Without any hope, Untill when I left my home withought job and no single penny in my pocket, From There I started to tell this Phrase to my self " You Can do it Clara, Edward did it and all people did it And you can do it as well" .and that changed my life completely because I started to take chances and whenever I failed I tried to see something good from my failure Like " At least you tried " ...

I believe in positive thinking... but I also believe in realistic thinking. Isn't that contradictory?

You are very right. I have seen so many celebrities go off their paths and suffer from mental illnesses because even though they are richer and more privileged than most, they don't know what their life purpose is and they don't know or get to make the best of what they have. Money doesn't make you happy. I'll admit, it's something we all want, but indeed, it cannot buy happiness. If you are having struggles, the best way to overcome them is to think of your situation in a positive light :)

There is never an end to our wants if we do not know how to enjoy what we already have. It is this that can guarantee happiness no matter how little one may have. I always say even the mediocre have a right to be happy and happy they are - many of them - as they know how to pick wheat from chaff.

It is such a nice feeling when wisdom such as this dawns. I too say that if A can do it why not B and so on. That is what is called thinking positively. I am happy that I have acquired this capability to think positive - the only way to go.

There are many health benefits of positive thinking. It will prevent stress which is the main cause of many illnesses. If you have a positive thinking you will be happy despite of any bad situation you are going through because it prevents depression from happening.

I think when the circumstances turn against you, you can only survive by having a positive outlook.

When someone I dearly love was in the hospital, and their best specialists told us that there was no hope and he will die, I could have just accepted it and see him die. But I chose to fight, to seek the best doctors in our country and elsewhere for his condition. A team of different doctors saw to him, one flying in from the USA. That was near twenty years ago, and he's still fine today!!!

Each of us will have our own challenges and threats. We have no choice but to BE positive so we can overcome them all!!!

I had this friend who had a conversation with me yesterday pouring out her woes. I just told her that whether she worries or not the day will pass and that it is better that we allow that day to pass without loading it with worries. That is how life is. It is in our hands to worry or not worry as by worrying we cannot solve problems but we can with a cool mind

Positive thinking does not mean one has to accept everything that comes one's way but taking up the challenge in a positive just as you did. It does not tell us that we must give up and that is not a sign of positive thinking

Well, I don't know if I can say that I really believe in these things, however... I don't like to feed negative thoughts. :D Can this be considered as a kind of "contradiction"?

It is only after a battle of thoughts both negative and positive that you will come to a realistic conclusion. Take time over it. It took me a long time to believe that positive thinking can result in solutions to many a difficult problems.

I try to think positively most of the time. Well, it doesn`t save me from troubles, but it certainly helps me to survive in hard times. Positive thinking is not some magical mantra, which will make your life smooth and easy. There always be bumpy roads in one`s life, but optimistic thinking will help to keep kind and positive mindset, which will affect in a good way any relationship.

Mind and body as you know works in tandem. When the body is will it affects the mind and vice versa. Positive thinking results in a healthy mind. And when the mind is healthy any situations can be sorted out with this cool mind.

I don't completely rule out the possibility of believing and sometimes I find myself thinking about it. :) But I think this is related to very particular situations of each person.

Yes. In situations like these, life tends to throw a curveball and is unpredictable. Life is sort of like a test. You throw a ball, and you miss 1000 times. Then you get a home run the 1001st time. It feels like black magic. You wonder, "What am I doing with my life?" or a similar question. You wander around wondering about your life purpose. It's quite funny.
