When lost in a forest, the main concern is the safety during the night. One trick taught by my father-in-law who used to be a good hunter in the mountains, is surrounding your tent or your shelter with dried twigs and branches. The best protection you can get is the twig of bamboo because it is sturdy and thorny. Even wild animals couldn't reach you if you have a perimeter made of bamboo twigs. Especially when you are in in an alien forest that you do not know what kind of wild animals you may encounter, the first thing to do while there is light is to build a shelter protection. At least you can have peace of mind when night comes.
