OneFoot I don't know what a Swedish mess kit looks like, but if you want stainless steel I would recommend you simply get a stainless billy can & cup. The cup is not necessary, but if you want to eat & drink at the same time it is useful. Zebra make a billy with a dish that fits inside. I don't think they are expensive.

I've had mess tins in the past and I've still got a couple packed away but in a SHTF situation where i'm moving about I want to keep the weight down, just a billy can and a cup will suffice, i'll eat directly put of the billy can.

They are pretty pricey for the Stainless Steel. This is about the cheapest I found...

They are even sort of proud of the Aluminum version and it runs 45 to 65 dollars. I personally think that you can do better for a lot less. I'm not sure why these are so expensive. I found new ones running 135 dollars and up.

I'm actually like Lonewolf and think that a good sized pot is the best thing to have. I like a pot that will boil at least a half gallon so purifying water goes faster. Most mess kits pots are a quart or less. I actually settled on a 2 quart coffee pot for my go bag. For survival purposes you will get more from boiling your food than any other method. It also doesn't put out the come and get it smell that grilling meat does.

I love rocket stoves. For cooking they are just the best way to go. They burn any biomass, no smoke and because they basically burn their fuel 100% they are very economical on their fuel. You can literally cook a meal with a few twigs.

I have one of these and it is fantastic. It will bring a couple gallons of water to a boil in about 10 to 15 minutes. It will cook a meal with a handful of little sticks and twigs. Once a rocket stove reaches operating temperature it burns the smoke. You can spend as much or as little as you want. There are some very good Youtube videos on making your own. I got this one because it is made for regular use and cooking for a family rather than camping.

I have never ever tried a rocket stove, I may just make one just to try them..
99% of the time we cook over open fires here and use a grill on that fire..
also ducth ovens very popular here, we call them potjie pots.. however they damn heavy and large to carry..
I like army mess kits, also the billy cans, Those so far pretty much the most useful I have found.
But mostly here this is the most popular cooking kit among our survival guys (ex sandf army mess kit)

The advantages of a well made rocket stove are that it takes far less fuel to cook a meal than an open fire. It also, once it is hot and blowing, literally burns the smoke and doesn't give your position away. When I first ran into these things they had just developed them for use in third world countries. You can literally use ANY sort of biomass to cook and it would allow the women there to cook without having to breathe a lot of smoke. When I bought my Eco Zoom Dura it was part of a program where for every one that they sold they would donate one to a third world country.

A regular fire cooks with coals after the fire has burned down. The zoom stove cooks with the fire itself. It gets so much hotter than a coal based cooking fire that it is hard on light aluminum camping pots. You can literally cook with leaves or dry pine straw. It all burns almost totally and leaves very little ash.

The theory behind them is that you have an L shaped burning chamber where the long leg is up and the wood is placed on a rack in the short leg. The long leg needs to be 2 or there times as long as the diameter of the pipe or entry chamber. When it gets hot the heat off the fire rises faster and faster and in so doing it begins to suck more and more air in under the wood. This strong airflow makes it burn almost totally and VERY hot. This makes it extremely efficient for things like boiling or frying. Its only weakness is you have to develop a feel for it to get it to simmer.

There are two styles out there. The Eco Zoom dura is an open chamber like a fireplace that is designed to burn wood or other regular biomass. The Eco Zoom Versa has a door and so you can burn charcoal or coal. It has a basket for this stuff and with the door closed you have some control over the burn rate.

Some of the other rocket stoves have a slanted feed tube so that it will sort of self feed. There are a LOT of rocket stoves out there now. You can even make one with bricks or cinder blocks. You might try one of the ones you make first and see how they work. The advantage of the metal ones is that the hot metal helps create a very strong draft. I have no regrets about the one that I bought but there are so many more choices now so shop around.

They seem neat, just the amount of feul wise seems like something benificial..
With survival sometimes you dont want to give position away, some times you want to attract attention to yourself to be rescued.
Maybe in a SHTF, or an escape an evade scenario you likely want
