    Thoughts on TEOTWAWKI

Normal survival situations in Australia are pretty easy to prepare for. That does not mean that you will survive, we all make mistakes, but fire, flood & drought are common in Australia & we all know what precautions to take. I survived cyclone Tracey in 74, I was not prepared, neither were many others in Darwin. We had so many warnings that came to nothing, that we became apathetic. Australia's motto is "she'll be right mate", well she wasn't right mate in Xmas 74, & I think it would be a big mistake to take peace & our safety for granted now.

So what are we prepping for? Well for those that have not had their heads buried in the sand, it is pretty obvious that the threat comes from within. From our own totally corrupt government. How far is the government willing to go to remove all our civil & human rights? I can't answer that, but just look at the rights we have lost already, look at the militarization of our Police Service. Mining now takes precedent over farming & the livelihood of Farmers. Mining takes precedent over Australia's environment. Corrupt council rates (tax) hikes have seen people evicted from the homes they actually own, & those homes sold by the council, & some people wonder why so many of us WISH that the s**t would hit the fan!!!

A TEOTWAWKI is a little harder to prep for, because we don't know what it may entail. The best we can do is assume that city life will no longer be safe, & that our survival lies in going bush. Some like myself & my family are already here, we are totally off grid. In the past I have lived for about 30 years without electricity, so if our solar power should malfunction, then it is not a problem. We have been off grid now for about 40 years. However, even though we are equipped & feel that there are enough of us to protect what we have against raiders, there is always the possibility that we may at some time have to leave our forest retreat. This too we are trained & equipped for.

We do not expect there to be too much competition in regards to hunting for food. Most so called preppers rely on modern equipment, & others are not really prepared at all. Few will have any experience in hunting & trapping, & fewer again will make it out of the cities alive. I have lived in the country all my life, & I know the limitations of modern technology. Those that start off with mostly modern survival gear will eventually find themselves living a stone age lifestyle, IF they survive at all! Those that depend only on pre 19th century equipment & skills will in my opinion never drop below that level of comfort.

I lived off grid for at least five or six years when I was at the tropical countryside. It was during mid nineties so It was not so bad, right now with internet and lots of commodities that depend of electricity I can't say that for certain.

By experience, I can say militarization of Police services is really awful. Innocent people died because some soldier shot
on sight someone that he thought was a pursued criminal. Military is not trained the same way as law enforcement members, so they make poor police.

I do not prep for any specific event, I prep for all the feasible ones!
As I have lived city, town and bush, I will not condemn any location for all have there pro's and con's.
Likewise I will not condemn any ethnic group nor locational group!
Being a prepper/survivalist will not elevate you above the mass's
It merely gives one a slight head start how one uses that head start is everything.
City people think country folks are slow, and country folks think city people are stupid!
neither are right! and both are wrong!
Anyone who thinks city folk can't get out here because of such and such is seriously deluding themselves,
You can reduce the odds but you cant eliminate them, desperate city folk can shoot, some are highly trained ex soldiers, some are smart some are stupid
some have usefull skills some don't all will be desperate!
Anyone who underestimates any one or group will suffer!

The thing I hear/see on many forums is always " I am the best" the rest are stupid! it turns religious for many and they have blind faith in there way to the
exclusion or just lip service to any other way!
My way is the only right way, any other way is stupid!

like many here I prepare not just for minor events but for ALL events, but I get totally disillusioned by many in my own country even those on prepper forums who think nothing bad will ever happen and even if something does happen it will all be sweetness and light and we will greet everyone we meet post SHTF like long lost brothers, when in fact they wont know where the next meal is coming from and will knife them in the back for the last tin of corned beef! I am in no illusions how bad it could get which is why I am all for isolation and seclusion post shtf, I trust very few people now let alone after TEOTWAWKI.

I see so many who knife others in the back today. I think in a survival situation they will be worse.

There are some things that no amount of planning or preparation for will save you. Those you don't worry about. A big rock that lands too close to you, some of the plague level diseases, a nuke on your head...all you can do is try to figure out is if survival is possible if you can get past that initial event.

There is some good news, the kind of events that are mostly man made will tend to wipe out those least likely to survive in that first event. They won't drop bombs on the little rural places. We are extremely unlike;y to have huge riots in our little scattered 500 population town. Actually we are not all that bothered in the short term by lack of power since we have been there a lot of times in the past for up to a month. When a big storm knocks out power over a huge area they tend to the more populated ones first. Diseases will spread through the Big cities like wild fire as people cram into mass transit they will spread the problem far and wide before the true scope of the problem will be known.

It is quite possible that the worry we have of the rampaging hoards fleeing the big cities just won't be all that big of a problem. Actually having seen what happens when even a small percentage of Houston tried to evacuate I don't see many of them making it. The roads will block up and they will turn on each other as soon as they finish the one bottle of water and bag of chips that they thought to bring along as supplies.

Let's be realistic, most of the liberal people will just sit and wait with faith that the government is going to come and save them until it is too late. Most urban folks have this attitude to some extent. The bigger the metropolitan area the stronger this tendency is. Someone raised in this will find themselves at a huge disadvantage unless they have prepared themselves mentally ahead of time. Cities have so many laws and rules that you follow and begin to think of as sort of laws of nature.

People that live in rural areas just don't think that way. We know that if someone is breaking into our home that calling the cops is useless. You call them...after it is over with. We don't have leash laws or dog catchers. If an animal of any kind gives you a problem YOU deal with it. My neighbor lady killed two hogs on her front porch a few years ago that were being aggressive. This YOU DEAL WITH IT is just the way rural people roll while in cities people are told, trained and mostly required by law to call the appropriate government agency and let them fix it for you.

Think about it for a minute... In a situation where the living will be separated from the dead by a simple matter of reaction time who is going to make the decision to take the matter into their own hands and who is going to hesitate? The people that make it out of the urban centers will be the ones that move out FIRST. If you live in a big citiy you need to be mentally more prepared than a rural person simply because you won't have as much time to decide what to do. When things are crowded close together fire, disease and violence spread faster than when people are scattered out over lots of square miles.

TEOTWAWKI may come upon us with a whisper and a soft moan rather than like a bomb. You will need to watch close and guess right the first time if it comes at us in that way. Slowly tightening government controls can kill you in the end as easily as a riot. That is what is happening all over the place right now. The gun laws are the government weakening us so if they decide to just toss out our rights there just won't be a danm thing that we can do about it. If guns were the cause of murder and violence then why are the places in the US with the harshest gun control laws the most violent with the highest murder rates. Hell Texas should be a dead zone!! Instead there isn't a single list that I have found that has a Texas city in it when they are listing the most dangerous cities in America.

If you look at history you will find that countries that take the weapons from their citizens can go from free to a dictatorship in a flash. People in most of Europe may be only a couple of years from being no freer than someone in North Korea. Without weapons all you can do is whine if the government refuses to do what they are supposed to do. This sort of possible ending is the one that I worry about the most. At least where I am though I can at least chose to die fighting and take an entourage with me. If you are disarmed you will be no better off than the Jews were in Nazi Germany.

I suspect that everyone here is already on some sort of government list. I KNOW that I am and have been for many years. I was in a militia and have done various other things that no doubt called attention to me. I am free because I live in a place that still regards freedom as a right that doesn't exist because I said pretty please. I'm free because the government knows that we are willing to fight to the death to keep that freedom.

there has been a new report by a major supermarket in the UK that says the "big shop" is now a thing of the past for most people, the majority of people now, it says, shop daily and sometimes more than once a day and a lot of it is convenience food, just nuke it in a microwave in a few minutes, no preparation no fresh food, does that mean that people will be out of food within 24 hours in an emergency situation? I think it does. even a minor event could lead to starvation within a few days, the mind boggles, but I cant say i'm surprised at people habits these days.

For decades I made a living repairing residential and commercial laundry and kitchen appliances and AC/Heating. People under the age of about 35 just don't cook much any more. I used to always have a big run on Oven repairs the week before Thanksgiving. Panicked women that basically hadn't used their oven since the year before and they couldn't get it to work. Often, no kidding, there was nothing wrong with it except they just didn't know how to operate it. Sometimes the selector knob would be on "Clean" and sometimes it would be that the clock had somehow been set and had turned the oven off.

Most homes of these people had almost nothing in their cabinets except chips and soft drinks but their freezers will be packed with pizzas and other frozen heat and serve meals. I regularly used to make a quick 50 bucks going to rent properties to show college students how to operate the stoves and ovens. They often had no idea what the difference was between "bake" and "broil". You can't imagine the mess it makes out of things when you "broil" a frozen dinner or pizza. Some of them didn't know that you have to turn both knobs, the thermostat temperature control AND the selector knob on to get the oven to work.

Yeah, these people will be starving within 3 or 4 days if the power dies. Most probably won't have anything to drink almost immediately. I don't know how it is elsewhere but here convenience stores have become a lot more than just quick stops for sodas, milk, bread and candy. Nearly all of them here have kitchens and serve all sorts of foods. Honestly we have 3 in the little 500 person town where I live that make the best burgers that I've ever had. They also have fried chicken, Mexican food, egg-rolls and all other sorts of things to eat. If EVERY convenience store is making money doing this then there must be a LOT of people not cooking!

This is, to me, just another example of TEOTWAWKI sneaking up on us. More and more people are becoming more totally dependent on a fragile system that has no back up.

Carl Sagan said, “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology. That's a clear prescription for disaster!”

Add to that statement that people in that society also have almost no knowledge of how people did those things that technology now does for them before the technology existed. If we lose that technology the survivors will slide at least down to the dark ages and maybe even further back than that. We easily could devolve to a point below even the levels of the most primitive levels of near stone age cultures.

convenience stores in my country seem to have a warming oven that's all, for pastries, sausage rolls, pasties(a west country staple) and the like but no actual cooking. the only other thing that is everywhere is "coffee to go" in those horrible plastic paper cups which get thrown down all over the place. litter is one of my bugbears, its everywhere.

Just about every convenience store in this part of Texas has at the very least a fryer so they can fry burritos, egg rolls, and such. Most also have some sort of breakfast foods for in the mornings. Over the last 10 years though they have grown to the point that basically they are direct competition with fast food to the point that now a lot of places are actually joining with established fast food establishments. We have one that is a full service convenience store with gas, fishing tackle and bait, deer corn, beer, wine and everything else you would expect plus a Subway Sandwich place. Another has a Mac Donald's in the same building with it and I know of a couple with Taco Bell or Kentucky fried Chicken restaurants attached to the stores.

They must be doing pretty good, every time you turn around someone is opening another one. There are 7 or 8 of these things on the 10 miles stretch around this one little town.

Honestly, most kids these days don't even know how to fry and egg or make a bowl of soup unless they can pour it out of a can and stick it in a microwave.

cant say there is a convenience store like this anywhere near me, the local filling station sells and will heat up a sausage roll or a pie for a customer but that's about it, we have a fish and chip shop in town but that dosent open until noon, the nearest MacDonalds is 20 miles away, Subways is only in the bigger towns that's at least 25 miles away.

They have sort of replaced the old neighborhood stores that the big box stores mostly put out of business. They offer, especially small communities, a pretty wide variety of resources. Oh they also sell all sorts of lottery tickets. LOTS of them!! At one time they were having slot machines too but it turned out that that wasn't exactly legal. LOL.
