    Good morning all,

    Per ...

It wasn't destroyed in Gorky Park.

Haile Selassie was the Ethiopian chief of state who spoke before the UN and gave his famous speech being something like " I told ya' so".

Oddly this seems to be some sort if internal Ethiopian situation that has spilled over to London. I guess maybe there are Ethiopian nationals in the UK with strong views on these matters? Either way it is just more pointless statue vandalism.

there seems to be an anti statue hatred in every country in the world these days.
its just a hunk of metal or stone, pulling it down changes nothing.

The young and stupid are not heroes and envy those that were. Tear down that you can't hope to achieve.

I think it is more than that. I suspect the statue destroyers are trying to force their own belief system on history. Whilst much of all of our histories has a good deal to be embarrassed (or even ashamed) about, attempting to expunge it serves no purpose. Worse, it can suppress episodes in history that could then become repeated.

I think I will stand with my original analogy. These wimps have not and will not accomplish anything meaningful. They are filled with self pity, rage and and simply use this pathetic movement to allow them to act out their rage. They are the mommy boys and girls without direction and very little hope. If they are interviewed they can only repeat a given montra but could not articulate what they had just said actually meant.

    Good morning Brownbear,

It's not about anything external to the UK and it's residents.

Even a pile of dirt in a park is officially off-limits to the semi-human imported trash.

Property, both public and private, must be protected against loss.

The UK and US have the same basic problem.

Other societies solved this problem already.

I don't think it is a problem linked to immigrants (or descendants thereof), but a general frustration with society at present. In the western world we see an ever growing gap between the wealthier people (and their elite) and the average person. About ten years ago there were riots in the UK that quickly turned into a looting bonanza (I imagine that made its way onto your national news too). I am wholly opposed to looting but, it is possible that some of those that were looting were taking stuff they simply could not hope to afford. That does not, of course, excuse their actions and I believe they were dealt with, wherever apprehended, by the full force of the law. Nonetheless I do see that as a symptom of capitalism "gone wrong". I'm certainly not a Neo-liberal, but I can clearly see the cracks within our society and that there is much room for improvement.

too many snowflakes and lefty liberal types I think, time they got off their arses and made something of themselves but of course its just easier to blame someone or society in general for their failings.

    Good morning Brownbear,

Well, it's definitely - linked to - immigrants. The statue wasn't damaged by the theology faculty at St Andrews Univ, Scotland.

Yes, those UK riots entered the international media. My 2nd home is Hong Kong ... got to read about them is many of the Brit papers easy to get there.

Even with robber baron capitalism, many decent citizens and immigrants don't acquire stuff because they can never to even hope to legitimately get.

Obviously the "full force" of the [UK] law is less than full. A repeated failure occurred when the Ethiopian statue damaged. It's the same here in the upstart colonies.

This is less about capitalism and much more so about civilization.

    Civilization is very, very new.

    Now, I do agree that:

"Behind every great fortune there is a crime." BALZAC

No I really don't think it is. Most people of a younger age that are protesting are at least young enough to be grandchildren of immigrants if they are from countries where slavery was imposed - therefore very removed from what may have been their original culture. A look at the newsreel also shows a good 50% or more as young white folks. I honestly think it is more to do with a disaffected society catching on the something to moan and protest about. UK students have always protested, it's a rite of passage, there is now a specific cause to protest about.

Re the "full force" of UK law, our police have been run down to the point of utter inefficiency, so it's a minor miracle when they are caught - although after the riots there were a lot of arrests and convictions.

Capitalism is the current system of our civilisation so, I guess, it is hard to split the two apart to give a definitive answer, but I see there evils of "modern" capitalism all too clearly. Our civilisation is not really very civilised ;)

    Good afternoon Brownbear,

Frequently enough, even 3rd and 4th generation immigrants are nor that removed from their ancestral culture. Note the marriage issues, the "honor codes", the "religions" beyond theological beliefs,...

Yes, dissatisfied. As soon as a different segment of the population reacts to these people destroying statues, political stability is lost. It doesn't matter if part of the crowd are Anglos. They, too, are probably dissatisfied.

It's less about "capitalism" - a vague term - and more so about the loss of market economics. The market has been lost to the cartels.

It's really the same here in the US. We've got 4th generation Puerto Ricans not speaking English. Need I say they don't have the larger incomes.
