    Hello, I am Scott.

    Currently living in the UK.

I posted this in the important thread originally but realised it is probably better suited here. Please advise if I should put in another thread.

I hope I can acquire enough knowledge, or advice where to get knowledge and skills to take steps in the direction of life I have considered and decided as a challenge for my future here on this forum.
I am planning as many have planned, to leave the rat race for a more deliberate, long term life off the land.
My wife is Canadian, one of our steps is, we have decided to start out journey there. Though our off grid dream will not relisticly begin without the right knowledge, skills, practiced.

My mind is a little bit more prepared, than my wife's, (the theory of what is required).
We both have hiking experience, have understanding of clothing layering, have prepared and cooked food on our camping, hiking travels, popped in a hole, but realistically, knowledge/skill is more realistic to say basic or complete beginner.

This does not faze us, as we know that any journey is made up of individual steps, and gifts ones haveto be made.

I hope I was right to put all this here, but I mainly hope for advice on a first step.

    Thankyou in advance

    Scott

I'm a 62 year old retired teacher and a woman. A friend and I decided that the world seems to be going so gosh darn crazy that we want to buy some land in the country for us and our families, and learn how to live in case we are forced to go off grid. Plus in the last storm our town was without electricity for almost a week! That was a real learning experience!

You have already taken the first and most important step to survival...FORETHOUGHT. Now all you need to do is add a little knowledge and a few supplies and you will be way ahead of most people.

    Good! Cheers!

I used to be allergic to Florida, have chronic "cold symptoms" for however long we stayed with my favorite aunt in St. Petersburg, but she was still a great aunt and there was still great wildlife watching around the Everglades. Was sad when my Significant Other reported that on the other coast around Coral Gables he hardly even saw a seagull.

If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

I was told that if you don't know where you are going that you shouldn't be surprised when you never get there.

Random facts I found out today that may be useful.

(Let me know if you find evidence to the contrary)

    • Sucking venom from a bite wound will only do harm. Venom will already be in the bloodstream and your mouth might only add bacteria to the site.
    • If you get lost in the wilderness don’t make finding food your first priority. Most people depending on starting point can survive around a month or more without food. WATER and SHELTER is first priority.( or weapons. I like those)
    • Drinking water straight from a cactus is likely to make you vomit and become dehydrated faster. There is certain cactus that you can extract and filter water from but you have to know how.
    • Moss doesn’t grow on the north side of trees it can grow on any side (sorry if its an obvious one)
    • Just because an animal can eat it doesn’t mean you can. Some things like certain berries and mushrooms can be eaten by some animals but fatal for humans!

My name is Joe. I like the idea of self-sufficiency, especially if a major critical incident occurs. I want to try to prepare to take care of myself and my family either at home or in the field should something happen.

The thing about this is that the conditions that a survivor tries to prepare for are different than the advice offered now. If you have a hospital to go to your best bet is to stay calm do nothing and head to the hospital. Cutting, sucking and tourniquets all have dangers attached to do in them that are not worth risking if you can get to a hospital in any sort of a reasonable time.

All that changes when there is no hope of professional assistance. All good snake bite kits include sterile blades, proper tension bands and some form of suction cups or syringe that you use rather than sucking with your mouth. If you do it RIGHT and maintain a clean work area I don't think that you have anything to lose trying to get as much of the poison out of you as possible.

If you are just lost in the woods you should eat NOTHING!!! Trying to eat things that are not part of your normal diet, even if the stuff is perfectly eatable, can give you diarrhea and that is the last thing that you want. You can get dehydrated amazingly fast and that can lead to disorientation. Better to be hungry for a while that chance this. After a couple of weeks if you feel that rescue is not going to happen start SLOWLY eating small amounts of one thing at a time. This will allow your body to adjust and also tell you what to NEVER eat again without making you too sick..

    Welcome and happy greetings.

All of your bulleted items are true as far as I know.

Do not suck poison out of a snakebite -- especially with your own mouth. If you have any gum lesions, any tooth cavities, on and on, you are in deep trouble. Pit viper snake venom contains proteolytic enzymes, which is to say one ingredient digests proteins, and such bites cave in -- the tissue dissolved.

You don't suck with your mouth. You don't cut with a nasty pocket knife. You never apply a tourniquet that stops the blood flow. A tension band slows the absorption by constricting the lymph system that is just under the skin. That is all you want to do. The thing is that if you cut the blood off to say your foot, you may lose that foot even if the snake failed to inject poison into you. Applying a tight tourniquet is like trying to help someone that is coughing by STRANGLING them into unconsciousness.

Tourniquets are for when someone is hosing-out all of their life blood. Losing a limb isn't as bad as losing a life.

If going to use a tourniquet, get the training, and use the CAT-2 tourniquet:

Hello. "Feathers on the Wings of Love and Hate," is a two-book series I wrote. John Grit is my pen name. I have written many books about a future world under world government and total tyranny. I also have a novel about an FBI agent during the Depression, and many other novels. All of my novels are about freedom and human rights. Some of them have good survival ideas in them. If you go on Amazon, you will see hundreds of great reviews on my novels. Most readers love my writing. A few liberals hate them. I have even had threats from liberals. Amazon removes them pretty fast. (Thank God!) I do not want to make my readers angry with my novels. But I do want to make them think. Think about the value of freedom and human rights and how history has shown us how easy it is to allow a government to take those rights and freedoms from its people. Freedom is not free! It takes people willing to fight, kill, suffer, and die for freedom! Millions of Americans have died for our freedom and just about everyone else's freedom around the world. My "Feathers on the Wings of Love and Hate" is a great action/adventure story, but it is way more than a fun read. It will make you love freedom more than ever! In my next post, I will offer some survival info on dealing with the high heat and humidity of the Southeast while living in a forest or swamp. You may have to flee from the city to escape the violence after a disaster of some kind. I am fortunate enough to have a cabin in the woods, far from anyone. But most do not have that option.

I also like weather. I want to be a PhD stormchasing meteorologist someday.

Hi Name is Rob from a Town in Kwa Zulu Natal , South Africa, called Richards Bay.

I find myself , for the first time, thinking about how to survive and get out of KZN, when the civil war starts. Note I say when and not if. I pray it does not happen, but i think the Rubicon has been crossed and its just a matter of time until a single incident tips the bucket and all hell breaks loose.

So for now there is two full jerry cans in the garage , a trommle(Kist) packed with utensils / vacuum packed food and tinned food, 50 litres water , water purifying tablets , tent , gas bottle , flint and dog food....yes my dogs are coming with...i have no family :)

Ill be heading North , cross a border, legally or illegally.

Any one else from my part of the world .

    Pleased to hear.
