What Is Actual Reason To Carry Survival Sticks?

I'am searching in the internet couple of time, but couldn't find real answer about this. I want to know the actual reason to carry out survival stick when going for any camping.

Countrymen in the Uk tend to use a hazel staff. A decent multitool would provide all the extras on the product shown in the link.

I carry a staff when I go for walks in the area around my home. Unlike some of our members it is illegal for me to carry a gun all the time and yet there are things in the woods that can be less than friendly. So I can understand the need for a defense weapon the stick can be, but as so many have said, just get a multitool for the rest.

 

An issue that might be a problem for anyone using one of these in the UK is that the concealed knife, hammer or glass breaker would almost certainly be against the new "2019 reduction in violent crime act" that is supposed to prevent disguised knives or potential weapons from being carried in public. Sword sticks are the main reason for this but tactical canes fall into the same group.
If you're caught with one you'll need to have a very convincing limp.

 

I like to carry a Shephard's staff. It has a lot of uses. When climbing a steep hill I can reach up and hook a tree to pull myself up. If I encounter an aggressive animal of any kind (slither, four legs, or two) it will keep them well away from me. I have used it the prop up a tarp the make it higher in the middle so it will shed water better. When I am carrying a heavy pack it is like a third leg when in rocky terrain or when crossing a shallow creek. I can reach up and pull a limb down to hang my food bag. (We don't have bears here but the ants and raccoons will ruin your food if it is on the ground.)

I usually carry some sort of walking stick any time that I go for a walk. I have a bunch of them. Some I have made and some that I've bought. I like them to be heavy enough to ake a good club if I need one. We have a LOT of hogs here and a good stock cane is good for handling them. You never know when you are going to have a dog problem. I usually have a handgun when I'm in the woods but the stick is already in my hands and I would usually rather run an animal off than shoot it. This is especially true of a hog. They can at times take a lot of shooting to drop them if they are coming at you head-on and you don't want to just injure them. I've usually found that if you poke them in the face they will usually back off. You do not want to shoot one with a 22LR.

 

I carry a staff which I have modified slightly. It is about 5 1/2 ' long. I added a paracord grip, and added markings on the bottom at 6" - 12" - 18" if I had to check the depth of a creek before crossing. It could also be used as a weapon if need be.

To pay $160.00 for something you can make for free is not money well spent.

There are about a million of them out there, but I think this is one of the best. Basically a staff or cane with some gadgets attached. Trekking poles are very popular with hikers, and they are an asset. Survival stick is a little bit of a stretch.

 

Here is another one that shows a lot more function.

 

IF only there is a version that is telescopic up to 2m long + attachable boar spear That way it can be use as effective boar spear and provide sufficient deterrence against kitty cat. That would help me a lot. Boar attacking camp at night is a real thing around here.

 

Check out You Tube. Enter telescoping trekking poles. Quite a wide variety of choices. Then enter spear heads, and you will find the same wide variety of choices. You could also look at ferrules. As far as assembly goes you are on your own, but all of the components are readily available.

 

Trekking pole doesn't have the rigidness or the length of a boar spear.

There are several models of telescoping poles.

I have one that expands to 30 ft / 10 M. At one time in my life I could use this for various purposes. Nowadays the aging process prohibits use except have put it in our inflatable boat for use.

There are various attachments for the poles.

My usual walking stick is a 7 ft / 2+M fiberglass pike pole. Newest addition to it is a label I placed on it saying " For Social Distancing Only".

Don't know about salt water crocodiles but a stick can be outfitted with a cattle prod to keep the deer flies away.

We've got a similar law here in Virginia.

Even duel-use attachments like window breaker can be viewed as both an emergency escape tool and also as a criminal's tool.

Over the years, LEOs taught us to keep the pole with ID card and "no big deal".

Indirectly related: Someone on my public sector squad modified their Mini-Mag light (small torch) with a catalog-purchased add-on of heavy metal that screws on the light. It's intent and use is for the torch to serve as a weapon. They guy kept it in a kit pouch making it "concealed". Guy got a police warning and I got some report writing practice.

SIDEBAR: For all; Put a radiator hose clamp somewhere on pole. When lost, attach the strobe light to the clamp and the several extra feet hoisted above ground will allow much greater range/visibility for the Ray Ban SAR plane. Para cord also works but I've got additional arrangements.
