Don't do it, unless you want to blow off an appendage. There are WAY better books on these topics. What are your primary interest? If you don't mind me asking.

Have two copies of it...and don't try the recipes..too dangerous.

Besides...in my job at this shipyard...I get to work with U 235...why would I want to mess with anything in the Anarchist Cookbook.

The book is historical reference to me...

I had several of those types of books at one time in addition to the Anarchist Cookbook...

How to get even....Forgive...Forget it ...etc etc ...et al.

One of them had a very interesting line in it ..in that many of the ideas came from law enforcement...and or feds..

    Think about that...

Some of the stuff is insane and some of it is massively outdated but then some of it is pretty good info if you like to make things that go BOOM. In my younger and crazier days, I made a lot of pipe bombs. I blew up all sorts of things. The thing was that I knew how to handle and properly mix my stuff and was meticulous. I never put the stuff and a detonator in the same place until I was ready to use it. Never had a single accident. It is like a lot of things, reloading for example, you do it one step at a time and make sure that you do it properly and it is fine. Act stupid and don't pay attention and well maybe you were just too stupid to live.

My recommendation...If you have never created, mixed or used explosives before and you can't afford proper instruction/training in making improvised explosives...DON'T.
I received training in making and using improvised explosives and IED's in the military and even then saw two other trainees severely injured in class.

If you plan on proceeding and you have never taken a chemistry class,..take one. Explosives are broken down into 2 basic types. High explosives and blasting agents. You will need to learn ignition systems, boosters and primary explosives. Most of these are heat and shock sensitive and most can be accidentally ignited with the static electricity from your body. Blasting agents are more stable but need a powerful blasting cap or a booster to ignite. There are also incendiaries that you can learn and are generally safer than explosives.

    Still interested.
Rule #1. Always make sure everything is very clean. Cross contamination with certain chemicals will detonate explosives.
Rule #2. Always make sure everything is electrically grounded. Electrical sparks cause ignitions. Some explosives like double salts, picric acid or TATP will detonate from the touch of a feather.
Rule #3. Always pay attention to what your doing and follow the instructions. Distractions will get you killed.

If you still going through with this.
Rule #4. Always make sure your life insurance is paid up. Your family will need the money. Burials, hospital bills, rebuilding, etc.

some good reads are here. But don't blame me, I warned you!

Dalewick is correct...about cautions......be very very careful...big time...

Many many years ago...we used to have a place way out in the woods.....wherein we used to go shooting...

One of the guys brought a pipe bomb he made one day out of brass pipe and end caps drilled on one end and a standard store bought fuse installed into the end...

So...........he lit it off as we we all stood back a good distance.....from where the pipe bomb was buried in the ground...

The fuse burned down into the ground...and nothing happened...it did not blow up......

Like a bunch of idiots we stood around for a couple of minutes ..debating who was going to walk over there and take a look.....

    Suddenly ......"BOOM." The thing exploded...

Though we were all relieved that it finally went off...and no one had to walk over there...we realize it was a hang fire....and finally burned through...

Nonetheless..it was a very important lesson...about messing with this stuff...

It was not a particularly big bomb...but up close ..it was very dangerous....too big to be a firecracker.

We had a similar event years later when I was in the National Guard....and we were out in the field shooting our 155sMM Howitzers.

We had loaded the gun....point detonation fused shell.....then powder and finally the cartridge firing mechanism inserted into the breech....and the lanyard pulled on command....

    Then.....nothing....................nothing happened.......nothing!!!

Everyone stood around looking at each other with this dumb blank look on their faces which stated...silently..."Now What"

The gun captain told everyone to remain in place.....and called back to let the officers know we had a misfire..

Then we went through our misfire procedures..under the supervision of the experienced gun captain.

We pulled the lanyard again.......nothing..,.again blank looks on everyone....

And once again the lanyard was pulled....

We waited a few minutes while everyone remained away from the gun should it go off and the barrel recoil way back as it normally does upon firing...

After waiting the allotted time....someone removed the breech firing mechanism...and finally someone had to open the breech block...and hope the gun does not fire when reaching for the opening handle/lever....or even go off when the breech is opened...

Now that is a nerve wracking pucker moment....you begin to understand words like..,"Committed.. responsible!!!"

You don't play around with this stuff.....

The other nerve wracking moment was when our fire mission was canceled ..and we had to open the breech , remove the powder bag and then use a cone device on the end of a large ram rod...to remove the fused projectile out of the lowered barrel.
You ask yourself if the fellow who built that fuse...had a bad hair day when the fuse was built????

I don't mess around with this stuff as did I in the days of my youth....some of the dumb stupid stuff we did ...we are lucky to even be here today.

My two copies of "The Anarchist Cookbook " are reference and historical information only. I'll pass on messing with this kind of stuff...

I like and prefer to keep my body parts...thank you!!!

    Homey don't mess with explosives.

Knew guy who made a pipe bomb. Lights fuse & tosses it way back in the forest, BOOM!, section of pipe could be heard cutting through the limbs of the trees. That fellow instantly realized that the metal could have fragged him. NO, that person was NOT me. Got more stories, all bad.

Here is another tidbit/trivia about the propellent we used in the 155MM Howitzer....

A powder bag used in shooting this gun consists of some 5 small bags banded together to form a complete bag of propellent in launching/firing this heavy fused projectile downrange..

If you dont want the fused projectile to travel as far you remove some of the bags of propellent from the banded bag and drop the discarded bag into a powder pit..dug out for just this purpose.

When you get ready to move the gun you take all your discarded bags of propellent out of the pit and cut them open with a knife...and scatter them on the ground.

The first time I saw this propellent I was stunned......

The stuff was about the size of elbow maccaroni.....seriously. The stuff looked like you could boil it...add the cheese and you were good to go.

However..........when you spread it across the ground and light it with a lighter.............Wow!!

That stuff burns very very hot and fast...with a five foot plus wall of flame....

    That is some serious propellent.

I know today why it is made in the manner of elbow macaroni ...having reloaded plenty of 30 caliber ammunition for rifles...

Nonetheless...you need to be very careful...even in burning rifle or pistol smokeless powder....it will do the same on the ground but on a smaller scale...hot and fast..Black powder too.

This stuff is not a fun toy....with which to play....

    Good afternoon Watcherchris,

The powder pit, a/k/a/ the "sterno resupply room" used for cooking by the experienced gourmets. Sound discretion is required. Using the powder bags saves the C4 for easier to make coffee later on.

Did the elbow macroni have small tunnels in each piece so as to create more surface area ?

crazy Kurt Saxon blew up his hand, if memory serves and it probably don't, he was mixing red phosphorus and perhaps sodium nitrate dry. Well needless to say it needed to be mixed wet.

I never liked the fuses. Everything that I ever made was electronically detonated. I didn't hook the wires to the switch or the battery to the switch until I was behind something and in a safe place. CARS are NOT dependably safe places by the way. The craziest thing that I ever messed with was homemade black powder. As long as you do it carefully and pay close attention to details and don't make it in large amounts it isn't too bad BUT, one spark or even striking it with a metal surface on a hard surface can be the last mistake that you will ever make. Explosives have a place especially if you think that at some point you might be outnumbered and attacked in your bug out location. That is the primary purpose to which mines and such have always been put to use. they should be considered defensive weapons. homemade explosives are just not as stable and safe as things like dynamite but they can be made from fairly common easily acquired substances. I did it so that if I ever NEEDED to do it that I would know how to do it safely and effectively.

Honestly, 30 or 40 years ago I expected what we are looking at right now. things settled down back then. Maybe it will happen again. I was deeply into the survival movement then and had the opportunity to learn from some fairly expert people how to do all sorts of rather out-there things.

TD, Did you make black powder or flash powder?
For anybody reading since TD didn't mention it. Anytime you use an electric blasting cap/detonator make sure that the end of the wires that will be attached to the battery are shunted. That means merely twisted together to prevent static electricity from detonating the blasting cap/detonator. Just a suggestion. I'll place a pic below for viewing.

    Yes, me too.

Jimmy Carter inflation didn't stick. The "Emperor's New Clothing" scam has worked for decades now. However, when countries can't make their interest payments, their fiat currencies hyperinflate into nothingness. We are now staring down that barrel ... IF your retirement plans involve assets based on any Western currency. Dr. Deutschebank can't keep this euro patient alive any more using the digital magic money scheme -- Papaw is on the respirator. Some other banks are squeaking-by, but Europe is bankrupt. That economy is held together by lies to the sheeple, who bleat, "Not baaaaaaaad, I'm saaaaaaafe!" What children!

    Pragmatist....

As I am given to understand it...the elbow macaroni ..the hole in the middle is for surface area and also access to air/oxygen to help with the burn rate..

I use certain brands of rifle powder ...made on a much smaller scale but basically very miniature elbow macaroni....same thing....oxygen/air to help with the burn rate.

This isn't going to be an exciting anecdote, but one time a certain fellow (that I don't hang out with anymore for an unrelated reason) and I purchased some tannerite from a gun store and mixed it in a plastic water bottle. We took it out into the woods and stood maybe fifty yards away from it. Turns out he brought only three rounds for his .270 and either he isn't a good shot or his scope wasn't sighted in and he missed every shot. I think about that sometimes that, if he had hit that bottle from fifty yards away, would we have been hit by rocks or other debris thrown from the blast? Perhaps it was a good thing he forgot to bring extra ammunition.

How big was the water bottle? Here's an article I found:
      https://tannerite.com/binary-target-faq/
There are bunches of links to follow if doing a search on tannerite.
Your friend should have known the strike point of his ammo/rifle config. -- could cost a man his life were the ammo NEEDED.
I deeply dislike explosives. I like precision tools. One thing I like in the tannerite concept is that it is binary -- only way to go. I don't like blasting caps. Good to have something to shoot at distance, >100yrds = good.

50 yards and probably a 1.5 or 2 pound charge = BAD DAY! Last year the VA cut a piece of wood out of my arm that I had carried around for 35 years. Remember the explosion. Never knew the wood was there. Everything can be shrapnel with an explosion. Something to remember.

A work-mate when he was in military went to range with ordinance buddy. His buddy had to dispose of ordinance ... but no ordinary ordinance. A 2,000 pounder. I sh##est thou not. His "friend" was being an unmitigated @$$hole. So Sparky sets up the party. Takes my workmate "far away" (????). Sparky sez, "Stick your fingers in your ears and open your mouth." Sparky does the deed. Friend tells me that he thought his lungs were going to be sucked out. Compression and rarefaction can be hard on the human body.

It was a 16.9oz bottle like you'd buy from the store.
I stopped hanging out with this friend after he flagged me twice within fifteen seconds with an AKM in my own home. Like, no care given, just waving the weapon around as if it was a toy. Imagine that type of action in a firefight. Bounding forward and then hit in the back by a 7.62x39.

It's not. Or it wasn't for me. The 3 rounds above were my first time. Second time took it's pound of flesh. Took a round to my left leg and foot. Then I found out what pain really was. Still carry shrapnel from that and incoming arty. Looked the reaper in the eyes too many times now.

I have always liked things that go boom. Even as a kid I was a terror with firecrackers and unrolled hundreds of them to make bigger ones. I guess that even then I was a meticulous bomb maker because I have never had one go off unexpectedly. Do you remember putting firecrackers under small cans and later aluminum cans to see how high they would go. The best was Vienna sausage cans. I did that with metal garbage cans. I might not have been smart but I was careful and precise in my actions even then. I did my really stupid things in or on cars or on motorcycles. When my bombs got big enough to blow up a car I pretty much wrapped it up and moved on to other things. I like to KNOW how to do things. I built a gun in my garage for the same sort of reason. If you hide...or if a skunk hides under my house I will gas him. Clorine gas is easy to make and brutal.

Another book from the wild 60s and early 70s that had a lot of off the walls ideas and information was Abbie Hoffman's "Steal this Book". It was a book for someone on the run or maybe just a little criminal. Lots of scams and all sorts of how to projects.

We must have been a lot alike when young. Firecrackers, cherry bombs and M-80's to start and when I started going farther from home I found out the local strip mines, often left caps, det cord, dynamite and ANFO out just laying around. Had a mine blaster teach me safety or I'm sure I would have killed myself and all my friends. Guess I had the bug bad as in the military I always volunteered for all explosives trainings. LOL! Must have been a family thing. My brother is a professional master blaster.
