Was the tinder already smoldering? I'm not sure that I caught it. Does the wax in some way cause the tinder to ignite or did you strike a spark before you turned around with the pan.

On this particular occasion I was using cloth tinder (or tow rag) charred directly in the fire, then extinguished in the tinderbox by closing the lid & smothering the smouldering ember. This is the way it was originally done in the 18th century & earlier.

But when you char cloth this way, directly in the fire, not all of the cloth is charred black, so what can happen is that when you strike a spark onto the tinder in the tinderbox, & then blow on the glowing ember/smouldering tinder, very often the uncharred portion of the cloth will catch fire, This is what happened in this instance in this video.

However, if you strike a spark onto any charred tinder & then blow on the ember, it will spread & get hot. Hot enough to melt wax onto the tinder. This is adding fuel to the tinder, so if you keep blowing, the tinder with the molten wax on it will catch fire.

I hope I have explained this clearly enough Tex, but if you have any more questions, just ask.
    Regards, Keith.

Got it. Thanks I will definitely give this a run. A candle is so much better to light a fire than just trying to get the ember to start your tinder.

I always carry a candle stub in my fire bag in case I can only find damp kindling.

Here is another great tip...always carry a bag of potato chips, they ignite instantly, because they are full of cooking oils....try it.

I usually carry a small bag of dry kindling with me, something like silver birch which ignites well. a couple of pine cones are excellent too.

I used to too mate until I realised I didn't have to. Pretty rare for me not to find dry kindling. I hate carrying more than I have to. But of course the environment you are in makes a big difference, so I can understand your need.

I really do admire all of your skills, and I know it is something I should learn. For some reason I don't want to go that far back in time. My fire kits will include a Bic lighter. I'm sorry, is that heresy on this thread? Usually two or three kinds of matches with a striker, a couple of candles, and a ferro cerium rod. For tinder I keep cotton balls and Vaseline; dryer lint; and usually some of the more modern, commercially available stuff off the shelf: Wet Fire, and TinderQuik come to mind.
