Here's the situation (real one too for that matter). The situation at South China Sea has deteriorate to the point that talk of war has been voiced openly & officially. The "unofficial" line of thinking (among diplomatic corps & policy maker) in my side of the pond is shooting war may inevitable within the next 2 years. Obviously with the present great plague still rampaging with very high death rate (over 10%) nobody dare to publish the estimate. And journalist around here isn't exactly the brightest the nation has to offer either, so there is that.

My dwelling situation is I live in 25 floor apartment building & another dwelling at ground level about 15 minute drive away distance. However this city I'm living in is build around oil field, naval base & shipyard, along with ½ of the nation Military Industrial Complex, which mean in the event of shooting war break out this city will be a targeted for missiles saturation attack. I strongly doubt ChiCom dare to land any force and suffering from attrition rate of jungle warfare or using any high energy weapon, they do however have few Fifth Column operating in the country which ironically receive private backing mostly from the denizen of Anglosphere countries with few of them even active in many survivalist / prepper forums. Moreover ChiCom playbook will involve massive cyber attack upon the critical infrastructure so any health care, banking services, etc will be gone due to the absent of needed critical infrastructures

My question are, what aspect should be consider for wartime prepping? I personally doesn't mind going back trading bullets with anyone if under order to do so, however I'm more concern of preparation for day to day living of those I care about and my private properties (things that within my control). The first things that came to my mind is power, sanitation water, and internet. Foods & drinking water I could manage (albeit very tight), but those big 3 is near impossible in an apartment building. Although this building do have its own generator I'm extremely concern with the supply of diesel fuel for those generators during shooting war. I've also took thought of keeping hard cash as much as possible. So what else I'm missing here?

Anyway I've got about a year or so before all hell break lose, but hopefully it won't come to that (hopefully) :(

    Good morning Varuna,

    In reply;

Would not even place on list "internet". The good nws is that it saves on weight reduction for an evacuation. Of course, you'd be at the apartment building's ground floor just waiting. Guaranteed the building fuel will not be replenished.

    My recommendations:

Max out the no-cost/low-cost immunizations that are available. You had mentioned you don't have a first aid kit. Prep a medical/first aid kit as soon as possible if not faster. Have the kit sized for portability. It needs to contain your carrying ability of medicines/ointments/balms you currently take. Add the extra stuff: good quality tweezers, related.

You mentioned you smoke. Prep a portable stockpile of what you smoke. In a Hades situation, tobacco products become rare to expensive.

Using evacuation-oriented philosophy - whether vacating the place or not - place some time and effort into clothing to include hard hat with light, net, attached whistle. Don't forget Viet Cong combat boots: flip-flops. Extra boots are heavy so some views are to just have shower shoes for boots to air out when situation allows for this. Not "if"; "when". There will be opportunities and not while sleeping. Boots are always on with fresh socks during sleep cycle.

    ......

If you are placed back on active duty, if land forces, seek assignment in Division Artillery or a brigade headquarters. These places have the best and more of the best PPE, food, climate control and alcoholic beverages, even if unofficially stocked.

    ......

No need for portable mahjong game.

Varuna sounds like you would be a good investment for a life insurance policy . I pay the note and you list me as the beneficiary . I could give you a little pay off up front while you are still alive to enjoy it .

Internet access is part of my critical communication. And I kinda doubt ChiCom willing to risk attacking US internet & space infrastructure (of which what I'm using during such situation) other than using cyber attack (does Hawaii & Kalifornia still part of US of A?). Although I could setting up shop for power & internet at my secondary dwelling (its at ground level and has little jungle within wall enclosure), doing so is kinda costly. Furthermore moving back & forth between 2 dwelling going to be a problem of its own.

The only immunization I ever got was polio. And I never knew anyone who had other immunization other than polio. COVID-19 immunization is coming next year (available for free for those who's paying their health care premium).

Already got basic IFAK but I'm no good at all with anything medical or related subject. Furthermore I bought them between 5 - 3 years ago not even sure if there is an expiry. Medicine is another aspect. I've already began stocking over the counter medicines, but anything else that require prescription I haven't thoroughly thought of.

Already got sufficient amount of tobaccos for a week worth. But I do intend to increasing it to a month worth. Booze on the other hand will be a problem without electricity. So far I don't have any solution for refrigeration without using electricity

In most likely case I will be buggin in because I have nowhere else to go. Furthermore I do still have contractual obligation here and there. And evacuating this city isn't exactly what this city inhabitant has been known for, even back in closing phase of WW2 when the Brit invade and demand the city inhabitant to surrender their guns, nobody give a damn about it. Although my grandfather was a kind person, he did pickup his Karabiner and began distributing his bullets (sans cartridge and everything else) to the incoming Brit force.

Already got boots along with PVC boots, including what left over from my standard issue combat boots.

Although I personally doesn't mind IF they put me back into active duty, it is extremely unlikely they will re activating my commission. Due to policy made in the 80's - 90's we have too much line officers to the point "loaning" personnels to civilian agency, other service branch, or even to State Owned Enterprise has become the norm for the past 2 decade. And beside I'm currently part of the nation Military Industrial Complex.

Anyway, ChiCom action lately seem to be born out of desperation and struck too soon. They already engaging the Indian for few months already. And now making attempt for their fleet to break trough into the Indian Ocean

No insurance provide coverage for wartime action. And beside I've manage to survive this far (considering what I've went trough). The only difference this time is, as private citizen I no longer have any support element or any rear line to fallback. I know how to establish such support elements, unfortunately I don't have the money to do so (I'm continuously living in poverty here)

If Biden wins the election China is going to close the South China Sea and start to strangle Japan. At about the same time Iran will shut down the Persian Gulf. I don't think that South Korea will last long either. China will finance North Korea and we can't afford to devote our entire military to them. Any nation that is dependent on the US to fight for and maintain their freedom is going to be in trouble. Germany is already well on the way to controlling Europe and China is a BEAST that we can't afford to ignore. We no longer have the industrial capacity nor the resources to fight a war like WW2. The Republicans have shipped our factories overseas and the Democrats crushed our oil industry and made us dependent on foreign oil. If we have a big war we won't starve to death but we may be walking before it is over.

Varuna, Depending on what floor you live on and if you have access to your roof, could you make something similar to this to collect rainwater for drinking water?

Could a small wind turbine on your roof, lanai or out a window provide enough power for a computer and personal hotspot?

    Good morning Varuna,

Recommend redefine "critical". Many have and survived critical times - and later, thrived. Don't gamble. The web could be closed down. Some planners believe additional critical stuff using electricity will close down.

Hawaii is a fortified archipeligo. Only a few islands have private citizens. Plus, the state of Hawaii doesn't include the rest of the fortified area: French Frigate Shoals, Baker Island, Palmaya Island, Jarvis Island, a couple fo others ...

California is on hold until the election.

My free advice on immunizations isn't about historical matters; just what's available. Do check with a few area public clinics. There's some stuff for free I am sure of. When COVID gets an immunization next year, am guessing it will be no-charge. Otherwise few will get immunized. Still, I don't know. Check !

Medical / first aid knowledge doesn't require subject-matter mastery. Just the basics: a tweezers to remove glass splinters, burn ointments, bandages to stop bleeding wounds. Think of suntan lotion as a reminder for other stuff.

Some medicines with expiration dates can still be taken. Although, caution must be used because some are dangerous. If doubts, take none that expired.

There are alcoholic beverages not needing refrigeration. For advanced-level prepping, I developed thr ability to consume hot beer. It can be done.

Don't feel lonely. The US has more officers - on more staffs - think of all the islands comprising Indonesia. Many, many, many excess officers here. Trump is slowly closing down this welfare program.

...... If I may jump in to something ......

True, insurance not available for war. The US Government - and others - do have a program called "War Risk Insurance". It's a form of welfare.

    ......

Cancell the second rental apartment/room. Poverty level will slowly disappear. Use the savings for first aid kit supplies.

I don't know why people mistakenly call them windmills. They are called wind turbines. There's a turbine in there. A windmill was or still is used in like Denmark for bread making and other manufacturing uses.

If one lives where there is a good amount of wind in the weather, a wind turbine sounds like a turbo idea. This especially true if you live in a very rural area. In a more occupied area, a wind turbine is a flag saying "I have a source of electricity, ha, ha, ha!" How about this, have a wind turbine and a perimeter that can be maintained by multiple riflemen. When unwelcome "visitors" come, rest assured that they will not come alone.

After hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, generators became hard to come by. Home-owners had their generators stolen by the gangs of course, however those who maintained cell towers also had their generators and/or generator fuel stolen also. Sometimes the locals would try to guard these cell tower generators however civilians are unarmed and gangs are armed.

Generators and the fuel for them will be precious post-SHTF.

    A story from India
    https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com...wer-generator-thefts/articleshow/44965115.cms

I say, chain the generator to multiple heavy eye-bolts screwed into sinkers in concrete. Everyone can hear it running, but you can still put the thing behind cover that will keep the furiously envious from putting an FMJ through it. Exhaust fumes must be kept away from home air supply intakes. One may wish to use fans and air ventilation methods to shoot the fumes away from a home.

Wing turbines, you'd not have to worry about this as much, but if an enemy can't get from you that which they wish from you, then they will deny you that which they desire. They will put a bullet through your wind turbine.

Me, I've watched payoffs work. I've shared generator power with somebody (and his family) I figured to be more than a little bit proficient in "taking care of trouble". Protecting the families of allies is a good thing. At my age, all I am concerned about is keeping my family alive, if I could save some other kids, why not. If alone, I would simply pull a kamikaze and see how much trash I could take out on my way out. I'll distribute my toys to the enemies of my enemy. Going out with a bang -- isn't that what it is all about?! Life's last pleasure, watching his enemy suffer.

Biden win is indeed worrisome from geopolitical perspective.

Iran doesn't have the capability to control Persian Gulf with Saudi still around. The best they could do is making a lot of mess in Gulf of Oman.

Lady Merkel is already in near full control of EU

Currently lived in 12th floot. I've already have (currently) 3 weeks worth of drinking / cooking water for 1 person. And I can easily (cheap) scaling up further for 2 -3 months worth for 2 person. The problem with water is sanitary water. Based from my water expenditure (volume) record, I need around 200 litre/day or 53 US gallons/day just for sanitary alone :(

Roof access (parcel) is extremely expensive in this building. And unaffordable unless I could make some kind of business out of it.
Even IF I do have roof access in this building I would use it for internet access (Ku-band satellite dish and maybe point to point laser comm if necessary). But then again, even that would require having power.

There isn't any. With my contractual obligation to provide technical support & development to both Navy, Law Enforcement agency (CT related), and commercial business (typically banking & financial sector), I literally must be ready on-call to come over.

The thing is the main reason my team always having portable generator for expedition setup is because the only viable & practical source of power in tropical climate is burning dino juice. There isn't enough wind here even in middle of the sea, and solar photovoltaic need sunlight while what we got here in the tropical climate is mostly the sun IR radiation (heat) and not much sunlight, which will degrade any solar panel efficiency.
As you can see here, there isn't much space on the balcony for placing generator either. And the generator cannot be hooked up to the apartment power line.

    c288469db880f75b34b2523076b590c3.jpeg

My VSAT traffic routing as follow, me -> GEO satellite -> Hawaii (People Republic?) terrestrial cable -> Kalifornia (definitely a People Republic). So basically I rely heavily in US internet & space infrastructure for my VSAT. And its critical because that how I maintained worldwide communication. Nearly every part of my comm infrastructure are TCP/IP based.

For First Aid, I currently only have one of this, which I've bought 5 years back. Its came included with all the contents.

Although I don't mind taking a sip of non cold home brewed moonshine (190 prof). Beer is something that taste weird. Not to mention I also like Absolute Vodka, and she is more of a Jack Daniels, all need to be served with either ice or cold :(

Each dwelling has it own purpose. The apartment unit is for comfort & convenience, while the far cheaper rented room is originally for "social buffer" (to receive any guest that is inconvenience to be received at my apartment) also serve as place to stash my supplies & equipments

    Good morning Varuna,

I'm about to break my rules in re web discussion / free advice......

I used to have the ailment you currently are experiencing. It can be addressed ... can't say it is solvable but it can be approached.

Three presented facts you clearly presented allows me to write this.
Environment is a wartime prep scenario.
    1. You live on the 12th floor of a large building and need 50+ gallons of water/day
    2. You have a small first aid kit.
    3. You have a "social benefit" apartment

    I might be out of order but it's only to illuminate and help;

    Here's my 2 Paraks:

You've got - Todesangst - . I had it. Sigmund Freud had it. It's part of the human condition only recognized by some because the "authorities" such as church groups teach otherwise.

Your presented problems are obviously diversions from the real ailment. You know darn well a large building in a time of warfare - here: even hurricanes - won't have power or water supplies.

You managed a hospital boat/ship and display a first aid kit inadequate for even pre-teens in the Cub Scouts. The EMT scissors duplicate what's on the multi-tool. Etc, etc, .......

    Even with a $US increase from 5 to 6 $US a day ... if no inflation adjustment factor involved, it's more $.

If she likes Jack Daniels, she knows what's going on. I'm sure you can ditch the social benefit apartment, save the money for preparedness ... Americans with limited funds developed the car for a substitute social benefit apartment. It's not the Summer Palace but it works.

Work on your health and don't worry about 57 gallons of water and web access. Get her as part of your team.

    It's later than you think.

While I'm breaking my rules and rambling, ...... NORINCO makes and exports both the same and also different export versions of the stuff. Procurement involved Indonesian officials accepting the unit.

    ......

I am now in the mood for a Jack Daniels - but have medical restrictions.

You sound like those overpaid Anglosphere nations diplomats around here who doesn't know HOW to read my cultural & linguistic practices (how we say things)

This place offer the best bang for the buck I could find. Which is why I rent this. There isn't any available unit on the lower floor. I also rent this, this way I could avoid unnecessary exposure regarding to any property ownership.

Woooow hold on sec there. I've never said anything to that effect nor do I ever implying such (managing medical support vessel) What I had show you before was a medical ship of my almamater. But that's all I've never said nor making claim of managing it. Although I do personally knew peoples who work on the projects and making tiny donation.

Actually the $6/ day is for foods & cigarettes only :D:p I've spend around $350/month for dwelling arrangement alone. And nearly the same amount for internet which include US based service provider, but my internet access is "money making".
Hey now I'm still poor by western standard you know. And around here that mean I'm still entitled for income tax benefit which is 0% tax :D)

True. But the barrel blew up during live fire exercise and killed service member. Never before we here ever had any barrel blew up even old M2 howitzer still very reliable. Furthermore their radar products have low MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) compare to those from LM or SAAB . And those procurement was part of the previous regime procurement drive. Thankfully no other procurement will be made from China from the current administration

    Good morning Varuna,

Inferences are the province of the readers, the listener, the receiver of the info.

I am not coming from the Asian world. I have worked in Asia more years than working in the West.

Understand renting vrsus ownership. I agree.

"Each to his own" (meaning "Be independent in plans and arrangements"). Personally, I'd fix up the flop house apartment and move out of the more expensive building. I like large liquidity ratios ! Cash does wonders for preparedness.

I don't remember exactly what you wrote, but working around the medical boat with your background and education ... You did mention 6 years of civil law study ... You know about first aid and medical supplies - and the size of your current first aid kit. This scenario is indicative of something.

I also don't like Anglosphere diplomats. The American ones are no longer professional class. For that matter, with exceptions, the diplomatic corps of the US is pro forma only. If you had contacts with America's expat business class, you'd understand my post more throughly.

SAAB is not relevant. The procurement was decided for NORINCO. If these decisions were made in the prior Administration, it has little relevance to a NORINCO later delivery. All already got paid. Happens here also.

    Feet Notes:

    Recommend look up "psychological denial"

Shirley Temple Black appointed US Ambassador to Ghana and UN. She contributed $200,000 to the Nixon campaign. She actually did some work. The current scandals in the Ukraine say something about this system soon to be phased out.

If the power goes out living on the 12th floor is problematic. No power, no elevator, no water.

You could set up a collection system on the outside wall that fed into a bucket. A WaterBob would increase your water storage. https://www.ebay.com/i/324148467472 A piece of plastic will accomplish the same thing for a lot less.

Your 50+ gallons/day can be cut way back. You can collect urine in a separate bucket and use that to flush your toilet, along with the grey water from the sinks. A wet wash cloth can replace your shower.

If your balcony gets significant direct sun, you can add a solar panel. Probably not workable but something to think about having in reserve.

As I understand it both places are rentals. This restricts what you can do.

I'd find one or more 208 L drums with a removable top and burry it/them in your enclosed back yard. I'd fill them with the 3 B's, beans, bullets, and bandaids. I won't list everything that you want as you already know your needs better than I.

You have a readymade fallback position. Having supplies already stored there is relatively inexpensive.

100w solar panel, 12v sealed gel battery/charge controller and you have enough power for phone/laptop couple of led lights. Even without internet a phone/tablet/laptop is a good tool to have, ebooks/music/movies/offline maps etc. Water storage is the big issue for most, certainly those in a high rise apartment. Even if you stop washing you need a bare minimum of 2l a day to stay anything like healthy.

The Saudi fleet isn't much. They depend on the US for their military. Iran can close off the Persian Gulf with threats and small boats that Saudi would have hell responding to with small missile cruisers. Tankers are easy to take and once taken have to be handled with kid gloves. Imagine the disaster that a scuttled tanker in the Strait of Hormuz would cause both as a shipping hazard and an ecological disaster!. The Iranians can hold that area with small boats if the US isn't there to defend it. The 22 or so small ships of the Saudi Navy just couldn't get the deed done against people that are willing to sacrifice their own lives to take down a major ship. Tankers are not armored and a hole can be blown in their hull pretty easily.

Yeach that is one of the downside of renting. But on the flip side it doesn't put me in any exposures that associate with property ownership, which is something I couldn't afford at the moment.

I'm thinking of few cheap water bucket around 100l / 26 US gallon each. Its something but obviously not sustainable solution. And there is a limit how many of them I could keep around because I haven't check the floor weight capacity.

Moving around between 2 dwelling is one of my primary concern. I've just sold my vehicle last November. And procuring any new one isn't viable option at this moment. My original plan call was for buying new vehicle in the next 6 years or so.

The operative word here is "tropical climate", in which we receive plenty of the sun IR radiation (heat) but not so much with sunlight compare to those in temperate climate. Solar photovoltaic only viable at higher elevation (preferably at least 3000' of elevation) where the surrounding air is cool enough to shrug off any waste heat of the solar panel. But even at higher elevation the only viable photovoltaic panel is monocrystalline type (such as those from Goal Zero), while thin film type (such as those from Anker) just doest;t have the needed efficiency.

I'm currently thinking of either Honda EU1000i or Yamaha 1000iS, but leaning toward Honda due to familiarity in using the larger variant (EU2000i). Moreover Yamaha is expensive, albeit is more quoter than Honda

the usual advice is at least 2 litres per day for drinking, maybe a bit less if the person isnt moving about too much, as for washing not many modern people seem to have heard the term "strip wash" but it was well known in the past. I'd allow a minimum of 1 gallon of water per day for a couple.

I wasn't suggesting the 208L barrels for water, though that is a good idea, I was suggesting to bury supplies of food, etc. If your 100L drums have a removable top they would work as well and would be much easier to bury in the back yard.

If you can drive there in 15 minutes then it is a walkable distance. Having a pre-supplied fallback position is a good option. Nobody wants to bug out but having a BOL is a valuable prep.

    Good afternoon Varuna,

I've got to jump back into this thread. Maybe I should jump out !

Measure what is most important needing measurement. It NOT the floor weight capacity. It's both the CUMULATIVE weight on the floors above you plus what is being stored ... might not be water. Here, during "Y2K" we had local folks storing gasoline. Their storage facilities were DANGEROUS. The good news to all this is that if Surabaya is subject to missile attack, there's no need for concern about dwelling in the building - even the ground floor.

I, too, read DEFENSE NEWS and ARMED FORCES JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL. It's for entertainment. Don't believe all of the articles. If China ever landed an expeditionary force on Indonesia, ... do get that portable mah jong game that fits in a field jacket large pocket ... It's bloc warfare and the blocs can be studied. Indonesia is in ASEAN and China is in SCO. So do you think that China and Russia versus Indonesia and Malaysia ......

    Silly question, isn't it ?

The concluding news - It's good news. You will have a place to go to with transport arrangements. Critical personnel will be used to the max. The sinecures might not survive even the panics. I'm 73 and my memory goes back to when I was 8 y.o. and dusted off some Geiger Counters at a Reserve Forces Armory. Anyone who has basic mobility and can participate in large, complex organizations will be working in the response to any attack.

Again, you'll have a place to stay.

    Good afternoon Max,

Without being taught or even mentioned, I learned there would be long periods of time without washing.

The rashes and fungus infections can be handled until decades later. Then it becomes rough to manage. The ointments that work are expensive.

Actually it isn't me in person that I'm worry about. For all purpose and intend I could end up rendering tech support in Navy Fleet HQ anyway (which is also 15 minutes drive away). Its my stuffs and her that I'm most worried about. Her own dwelling is also kinda near to a Navy compound (her father was a Navy surgeon)

Never heard any of those sites. You much better off reading this site (cited below) if its for naval related matter. While site such as Jane's is kinda decent nowadays, but mostly because their speciality is in European region.

    http://www.navyrecognition.com/

For ChiCom to land boots on the ground would be a really tall IF. Their military planner (and also their diplomat) maybe rather on the "nutjob" side, but they certainly ain't dumb. They do seem to grudgingly aware the limit of their operational capabilities. They most likely gunning for Natuna islands group.

Putin is in nobody side but Putin. And Russian business do have "some stake" in Indonesia side of Borneo. In fact I kinda like the Russian guys, they always brought something for the usual Food & Booze Exchange. While Malaysia position in the issue isn't clear. And I strongly doubt Her Majesty would nor capable to send relieve force all the way from UK to assist them against ChiCom even with defence treaty in place. Curiously in the past month Malaysia had transfer some units to Sabah side, but so far there isn't any artillery or armoured battalion yet. Although the way I see it, they transfer unit in smaller number either due to not having enough mobility assets (most likely) or to avoid triggering any "misunderstanding" (doubtful, not in their character)

This city had seen it share of sieges, invasion, riot in the course of over 700 years. And historically only taken after either high attrition rate or the use of disease. And for those of us this city inhabitant, it is considered a shameful for not contributing anything within one means for war effort when the city we living in become target of war

In most likely case massive cyber attack would preclude any kinetic attack,. That alone bring another serious concern. Without working internet foods logistic will be severely disturbed because without communication the farmers would not know where & when to send their produces, in most likely case they just send according to what was ordered yesterday. That still doesn't take into account that cyber attack would also cripple power distribution and petroleum distribution

    Good morning Varuna,

Understand your and GF's concerns. They are somewhat universal. Any possession(s) not accompanying person could be lost even during routine times.

A contemporary expeditionary force - and even this is being modernized even more - is no longer soldiers and tanks.

My posts on this thread respond to your authorship of the thread title. War is not a casual matter and China addresses this accordingly.

I would guess well prior to cyber warfare would be economic warfare.

Only some of Jane's pubs are somewhat decent. One of the worst is their intel magazine. It's as academic as MITRE and RAND. It is useless.

Malaysia is de facto getting absorbed into other nations. My guess is that Borneo Malaysia (plus Brunei) goes to Indonesia and mainland Malaysia becomes part of that new Silk Road economic environment.

The world's being restructured into large political blocs with - real - economies of scale. The small states are still being supported by the large ones. For example, Timor, is Aussie territory for offshore energy access less the flag and flagpole of this former Portuguese colony. It's all changing now.

I would read more at Stratfor than Jane's.

I used to buy an intelligence magazine that was like $10 bucks a pop that was a worthy read, but I can't for the life of me remember its name now and not sure if they still exist. I believe they were published in the UK. It was a tall magazine unlike anything I saw before.

For print media I'd look at the Epoch Times. Yes, they have a newspaper. I love how they piss off F'er China on a day by day basis. Screw 'em.

This magazine was published in the mid 90s. If it's still around you'd more than likely have to go to a special news/magazine stand or renowned coffee shop to get it. Here in the U.S that would be Borders or Barnes & Noble with some other known mall newspaper/magazine shops.

Because of work contacts, day was that "I could make a call." No longer. Few contacts nowadays; and man, I do mean few. Nowadays for me it's all this medical math mess. Letting the China cancer grow without restraint has buggered the planet. Putin wants China dead, that's something. If you see Putin smiling w/some Chinese officials, he is feeling for the gaps between their ribs. Most likely future WMD war = Russia / China balloons. Even economically -- Russia vs China = who can buy the most gold. Strange days, yet not. Isn't it amazing how long it is that some heroin addicts live! Fascinating, but it seemed more fascinating decades back when I thought that life and death mattered.

Off, off topic: Radar. You're a bit young, but you ever talk to any DEW line guys from back during that last Cold War? Don't tell what you heard. I'm just tweaking those memories if you were ever privy to the ticklings. Nowadays, I have exactly zero people with whom to speak concerning any current festivities going on. In such matters, the "insightful" outlets just spew the official disinformation. Why the balloons haven't gone up by now is utterly beyond me. One guy, oh god how brilliant, I think has gone batsh## the f crazy on me. So it goes. Time and tide. Time for more coffee, I guess.

    Good afternoon F22,

I use SW radio and know what a one time pad is.

Shortwave is perhaps the safest communications mechanism to transmit.

Still, are there not ECM to close down one time pad users ?

    Good afternoon Old Geezer,

Hope you're feeling better from working ... not sure if job or garden type of work. Regardless, rest with balm and the healing starts - until more work to do.

You mentioned the DEW line. I remember it.

One problem today involving contacts is the the current mid-level working generation really has been "dumbed-down". Can guess that there's a bunch of young folks working the ADIZs and DEW that have little background as to what's going on.

This morning I fell back asleep and didn't wake until like >2pm. Wife got home woke me and snatched me back from the grave. My mind is sort'a-kind'a sputtering back into existence. One hopes. Could just be quality hallucinations. I am exposed to people who have just been with covid patients, to include surgery suites. Chicken me, doing surgery on covid patients, no thanks! I work-on/program/scream-at the digital disasters, but if you think about it, they too have their bugs ... lots of them. I sh##est thou not, I could have covid; but not let's forget that other flu felons lurk the corridors. Focus only on the enemy and his cousins will take you from an unguarded flank.

Had a radar man tell me about an "object" that left his screen starting in our air space and leaving out at a velocity that NO one on Earth could have built (1970s). This guy was a solid guy; smart, sure, but your healthy-of-mind / could-be-boring trooper. This man was telling me what he saw and part of his job involved estimating velocities. I believed/believe his story 100%. So when I hear Navy pilots reporting sh## that "can't be true", I just shut up and listen. Nowadays there are videos.

?Remember those times that you have been in the wrong place? Turn around and walk away? Yep, me too.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

    Well received.

You're probably one of only a few understanding my sleep cycle ! I'm up already based on similiar reasons you mentioned above.

Exactly ! COVID is highly infectous and, socially speaking, our current American version of Hanson's Disease - leprosy. Yet, it's the flu strains our medics know about that can be lethal to us senior citizens. If medically eligible, get the current flu jab.

Whatever's going on in air space or higher is of little concern to me. It's the soccer mom vans and pickup trucks that are my major danger here.

Anyway another aspect I haven't manage to addressed is "taste blunt". Logistic common sense dictate that in order to increase material readiness, one need "Commonality" & "Interoperability". However when its about foods & beverages doing so will quickly triggered taste blunt after 2 - 3 days due for consuming the same foods which is seriously bad for morale altogether. I personally can easily adapt to a week worth of eating the same foods (been there, done that with really awful taste combat ration). Unfortunately nowadays I also need to worry someone else who is not accustomed to such condition.

My current foods stash is literally a mess up mix of things that I still need to "test" whether or not it will be suitable for both taste & Calorie intake (I'm aiming for 2000 Calorie / day).

Comfort related items are also still haven't been properly addressed. One thing for sure, I've got a feeling I will need few litre of moonshine (190 proof) for something (not sure for what). While cigarettes commonality has been addressed, still haven't managed commonality for their lighter (parts & fuel for lighter) so far I use Zippo while she use S.T Dupont. Currently I'm thinking of getting Zippo double torch butane insert, thus making it easier to preserve fuel while still having windproof lighter with actual flame. Cant say the same for S.T Dupont, the damn thing need its own boutique if it ever need parts change.

Another aspects I haven't addressed is spare parts for all electronics. Some of them including my watches has shown sign of in need for battery change

Well their recent delegation who came here in official visit think otherwise. They have the audacity to make "Demand for Land & Water". US delegation came the next day to give the assurance of full US support in case of open hostility by ChiCom.

Since last year President Jokowi administration has been treating any major infrastructure failure as cyber attack until proven otherwise. It doesn't take a genius to know where he was pointing the originating of such possible cyber attack

Malaysia has already fallen into debt trap with no exit strategy to be seen. Nobody here want Sabah or Serawak, there is nothing profitable to be gain from those region (price of crude oil will most likely stay low). Their only usable (at least for Indonesia perspective) is for buffer zone against ChiCom. And what better buffer zone than letting another state managing (financing) it.

Forgot to mention. Timor has been Indonesia protectorate since 2018 (if I'm not mistaken). In case ChiCom making a push against them, both Indonesia & Australia will be obligate for defending them.

The difference is, in wartime you do expect war ordinances to raining down the sky. Even in this days of precision guided, the change of hitting the wrong target is real, either due to bad intel (most common), hardware failure, or operator error.

While in normal prepping one prep for what the most likely to happen or historical disaster. Normally I only prep for building fire (I live in high rise building), flash flood, deep earthquake, and bank holiday. Neither of those normal scenarios require material readiness for more than a week worth or country wide commercial power & internet blackout (which is critical for the country logistical chain)

    Good morning Lonewolf,

The terms are sometimes used differently.

In wartime, if some civilian scrounges even a WWI helmet, this can be considered an aspect of prepping.

The "Victory Gardens" can be placed within this form of the term.

    Good morning Varuna,

(Only now did I see post I'm replying to now. My internet service provider does not provide "real time" transmissions.)

Do note that US delegations don't necessarily reflect current or pending US policy and its application. Sometimes US delegations visit both sides at same time. Numerous examples abound.

The expression "assurances of full US support..." can be explained by others. Numerous example abound.

Economic warfare and major infrastructure failure are distinct and different. They are both visible even if economic warfare targets major infrastructure.

You're sometimes saying the same as I am. Malaysia has existential dangers.

Sabah and Salawak (and the sovereign nation of Brunei) are buffer areas to keep out undesirable political entities. For example, in theory, Brunei can establish a defense treaty with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

I believe the Timor offshore oil leases are near exclusive to Aussie interests. Indonesia is the major nation that, so far, is a major permanent entity in the New World Order. Indonesia also serves as a seperation wall to keep Australia isolated. This is the ideal situation for the Middle Kingdom.

Something to watch is if / when the US is leaving WESTPAC ...... and also the Middle East (and sub-Sahara Africa). Debt service gets priority. Plus, energy supplies are pleantiful in North America.

What must be understood and watched is that oil and gas supplies are no longer necessarily cheaper via a water haul. Land transport over some major supply routes are much less costly - if - there is little need for naval forces to protect the route.

    Good morning Varuna,

    Exactly.

After a large industrial war ends, the surplus of everything is available and at various speeds leaves the marketplace.

Here, after the surplus shops empty out of wartime equipment (and clothing), if someone wanted something in particular, it was common enough for them to steal selected items from veterans clubs where they had display cases of war stuff.

There are also records of thefts from museums.

The only sticky item I wanted but never got around to acquiring was a World War I brass knuckles trench knife .... for it's history. Otherwise, the good stuff was not surplus. It was still in the armories such as the famous M1 Carbine and .45 cal pistol ("45 automatic").

It's possible and has and does happen. In a war time situation there are missiles designed to home in on radio broadcasting towers and radar installations so it would be hard to carry out ECM. Never the less, HUMINT and human couriers can pass one time message like the old days. Though, in this day and age I think a lot is done via the Internet which is what I would not do if at all possible. If it is done it has to be done in a very secure way.

scrounging/scavenging is not prepping, prepping is being prepared in advance, scavenging after the event is not.

Well in my case it was "the relatives" (as in extended family members). Grandfather do kept Karbine, Sten, with Luger & six shooters for my mother & grandmother. Along with with wide assortments of field gears + whatever stuffs he could viably scavenged of his boat before it was scuttle. And my late mother idea of self defence was six shooter + holy water + rosary (plenty of unholy / undead creatures around their home at the time), with the standing policy of shoot first and holy water came next if the damn thing still coming. Sadly all of them went unaccounted, every members of the family just took things they want. Even all the dogs went unaccounted (grand mother was a dog breeder). What worse was, all the merchandize from the store went unaccounted when the store close down. Their humble little store end up becoming a police precinct nowadays.
