I think the biggest advantage to watching "Prepper Films" is the lessons learned about what NOT to do. I feel more prepared because I am actually more prepared. Watching a film does not give me the warm fuzzies.

I do not base my survival on prepper films or even horror films, I base my survival on personal experience and a lifetimes knowledge of other people.

Don't watch horror movies...I can get the real deal at work...and get paid for it on the clock.

Just like I don't go to amusements parks to take the rides and delude myself to thinking I have mastered fear.

Most of the concepts/understandings of real value..I did not learn from movies...but by living them or getting tutoring from others who have lived them then applying them myself...even by making my own mistakes..

One tends to learn quickly when one survives ones own close call and or mistakes....and I mean quickly....otherwise....Hello Darwin.

Oh...and this is also why I tend not to believe Hollywood people are the authority on how and what we should be doing in living our lives..
I think Hollywood and movies are horrible examples to follow...and now today...sports as well.

I have no respect for the demigods of sports to be telling me how I should be living my life...nor the music industry for all that matter..

I put sports people today right in there with Hollywood...

And now that brings us to the Republicans and Democrats..........Wow!!!!!!!

They are all joined at the hip..to me via "Herding."

Good afternoon all, to wit: TMT, Lonewolf and Watcherchris,

    Understand above commentary.

    Experience is best.

    Now, for my question:

If preparing a Prepper program for 14 - 16 yeal olds, could not these types of films work?

I ask this because the CDC zombie comic book themes are still successful with the kids comcurrently getting them away from the Hollywood trash.

"If preparing a Prepper program for 14 - 16 year olds, could not these types of films work?"

Probably for kids that is the most likely to make an impression. Kids this age are much more accustomed to acquiring ideas and information in this way than those of us more old school in our ways of thinking. We learned from DOING. When I was a kid my Mama fed me breakfast and then tossed me outside. we roamed all over the place and learned most of our skills from doing things. I have run head-on into this difference when trying to teach a young man about fishing. I was trying to show him how to tie various knots and he just informed me that he already knew all of that. He then proceeded to show me that he had an app on his phone that had all sorts of knots. To him having an app wasthe same as actually knowing how to do something. He had little patience with just learning the old way by doing something over and over until you had actually placed it in his perminant memory. Almost every time he was ready to make a tie on something out would come the phone.

Now don't get me wrong the boy was no rocket scientist but then he wasn't stupid either the thing was attitude more than aptitude. I like referance material too but the things that I like to do and may need to do in the future I try to actualy learn and not depend on a book or app to remind me how to do it every time. I'm not sure that a lot of kids these days can get around in their home town except by one or two very specific routes. they don't actually KNOW where places are they only know how to get there from a few places. If they are not at one of their places and you try to get them to go somepalces they may have to firt go to one of their places and then go to the new place. Honestly, young people don't seem to actually learn things the way that I did. they instead learn where to look that information up and keep almost nothing "onboard". You run into this when you take away their calculators. They can barely do simple addition and subtraction and multiplication and division is out of the question.

The article won't open for me but I get the idea from all your comments. So my 2 cents:

Real life is full of distressing emotions. Scary movies hardly come close unless you have been living under a rock.

I'm with TMT on that it's almost a lesson on what not to do. I am probably the most frustrating person to watch a film with as I can't help but point out all the mistakes.

Will it work for kids? Maybe, probably not. The problem with "learning" something from a movie or comic book is you then need to verify is this actually correct? Does it work? How do you make it work? It has to be practised. And on and on. Teenagers are not going to do that.

When I was much, much younger, I watched movies and TV for the entertainment value. Now I watch for educational value or the lack there of. Like Rebecca, I spot the ridiculous mistakes.

Now as for the kids. What would you expect 14 -16 year old kids to get from prepper movies? Would they learn it is good to have food when nobody else has food OR will they think the prepper was a hoarder and selfish? Remember, many if not most of these kids are being educated (brain washed) by liberal teachers. Example: My 12 year old granddaughter saw my bolt action rifle and wanted to know why I had a "Sniper Rifle". What message will they take from a prepper movie?

A lot of that is where you live TMT. where I live nearly all of the teachers either are hunters themselves or their partner is a hunter and they eat venison. The start of deer season is sort of like a State Holiday here. Only when you get to the insane university level do you run into the liberal idiocy. Sad but true, the Universities now are not interested in educating and instead mostly concentrate on programming the students and indoctrinating them with socialist philosophy.

I've not been keeping up with posts concerning movies and tv shows that deal with post-apocalypse issues.

Has anyone watched "To the Lake"?

It is a Russian series. I've watched a couple of episodes. They have had some accurate information -- especially how people are just NOT prepared for a pandemic. In the show, having military weapons is valued, the lack of fuel can be fatal, people stab each other in the back (no shortage of traitors), the locals steal from outsiders, people's emotions get them in very serious trouble, compassion is deadly, criminal gangs posing as soldiers are rapists and murderers, dead bad guys are a great supply of weapons and ammunition, ... . It appears that the Russians aren't a bunch of limp-wrists as are sheeple Westerners. The early episodes occur in winter, i.e. welcome to the dark sense of humor Mother Nature has. No fuel, no firewood = you die.

I watched "The Lake" and it is a prime example of what not to do and what kind of people not to have in the group. If I had been Sergei, I would have shot the ex-wife and his current wife. Very good description by Old Geezer. Maybe he will watch the movie I listed and give a mush better description than I do.

I am watching "Edge of Extinction", it is post apocalypse, setting is in the U.K. and is another prime example of what not to do. Good watch but not a great movie. Real good examples of what happens when folks make the wrong choices and rely on the wrong people.

I've watched a lot of tv series where they had people living off grid, in a group usually in a remote area somewhere, most of the time watched it to see what they did wrong and boy did they do wrong most of the time. usually ended up screaming at the tv because of all the stupid things they did.
Bear Grylls is another one, he may be chief scout but the guy is an accident waiting to happen he takes too many chances. he's a showman not a survivalist, last person I want near me in an emergency. now Ray Mears is a different kettle of fish, he is a woodsman and would be welcomed in my camp.

You can't simulate survival and psychological drama via the fictional movie medium. It could be by real life accounts and the TV shows that air them, though.

I'm a firm believer in simulation platforms. If done right with great code you can learn a TON! Believe me. Let me tell you something about that. Prior to 2006 I knew absolutely nothing about aviation. Because of flight simulation and my reading and using pretty impressive aircraft with most of all the bells and whistles, I can look in a 737 NG cockpit and tell you how to start the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit), set the bleed air, air packs, fuel, you name it right down to programing the FMS (Flight Management System/Flight Management Computer) with SIDs (Standard Instrument Departures) and STARS (Standard Terminal Arrivals), intercept a VOR (Very High Frequency Omni Range) radial, fly to a waypoint, EVERYTHING! All because of a computer simulation. I can also tell you they simulate nuclear explosions on servers for data collection. You could also simulate surgery I suppose. Of course nothing beats hands on experience with a cadaver, but simulation could be an added tool in the learning process. Now on the SHTF/survival front, that too could be simulated as a tool for understanding and learning from mistakes. In this Sim you might be thrown into a situation where you're out in the cold wintry woods trying to survive and as you hike through the woods you see a clearing of trees and proceed to walk. Little do you know that under that snow in the clearing is a thin sheet of ice. You fall in and die, GAME OVER. Needless to say it's just a simulation and now the next time you simulate your survival situation in the wintry woods you'll know to be leary of clearings with no trees least there be a lake there under snow. Now you learned something and can take practical knowledge into the field. We can also throw in medical emergencies into the code as well involving splinting a leg and dragging that person out of harms way among a whole vast of variables and situations.

So yeah, I'm of fan of simulation platforms and the complex code that makes them work.

What if there was a simulation on government and you play the role of mayor, congressman or president? LOL I used to play a game like this where you were mayor and it was called Simcity 2000 and latter I played Simcity 4. You mess with interest rates, taxes, public safety infrastructure, power generation, garbage disposal, you freaking name it, it's all simulated. I should reinstall the game. Was truly fantastic.

    Movies...Wow....

I'd rather go with U Tube videos...and be careful of that...

Also...what do you do if the Cell phones go down in a survival situation....."Duhhhhhh!!!!"

Prepping via television and or movies...Wow.!!

It did not work for my friend across the river who had someone hook up unasked/uninvited to his generator...

Apparently these entitled people did not watch the prepper movies or U Tube videos but did want to have their television working during the more than a week that people were without electricity after a hurricane here.

But how about those Kardashians...and or ESPN.!!??

I just gotta address this. I Don't understand why there is so much hate for Bear Grylls. Even here across the pond I've heard scores of people's detest for this man and what he's capable of doing. Sure, he may take what you assume to be risks, but rest assured he's more than likely well trained for it since he was in the SAS. Now the types of books I chose to read all the time involve para military forces like the aforementioned SAS, Delta Force, SEALs, CIA operatives, as well as many books on espionage and fighting techniques taught in these operator forces, etc. So from my perspective, what I know he's doing is everything that he has learned and trained on in order to carry out the mission that may evolve these harsh conditions anywhere on the face of the planet. I'd just sit there on my comfy couch and take it in and learn what a master survivalist has to show and how he does it. Do a lot of those scenarios pertain to the common civilian in a survivalist situation? Probably not. But to an extent, the things he does show you may have a bearing on you if and when you should find yourself in that situation. Most notably might be how to get out of quick sand or what to do if you fall through ice. These two scenarios play out all the time and many people end up giving up the ghost because they don't know how to resolve the situation because they weren't taught how to.

The other aspect he covers all the time, and to us from a very gross perspective, is how to capture and kill living creatures for food or the use of plants as food. I can tell you right now that what Bear Grylls is doing on how to live off the land and survive is exactly true because when I was in JROTC my teacher was a former Green Bert in Vietnam and he said that damn near EVERYTHING on the face of the planet can be consumed. It may be extraordinarily gross from the perspective of a couch warrior that has a constant supply of food in their tummy, but in a struggle for life versus death as it pertains to a survival situation, when you are damn, damn hungry, you'll eat anything up to and including going full blown cannibalism which is due to how the inner brain of the brain reacts in its primitive way where the body is crying out, "I need food now!" Now given the choice of eating parts of a dead John Doe or a snake, I'd eat that damn snake any day. Plus, I'm sure it isn't half bad at all after its been roasted over a fire on a stick. This applies to venomous creatures whether it's snakes, spiders or scorpions. He shows how to do it and what to avoid. These operators who are assigned to their region of the world are trained on this stuff about what you can and can not eat in that area of the world among a vast amount of other things including linguistics.

At any rate, I'm not so quick to knock real talent. His shows have been very interesting and educational. In fact, I used to watch the show so much that I pretty much knew his style. When he was in a rain forest (of which I can't remember where now), he was trying to light a fire with his knife and magnesium fire starter but for the life of him couldn't due to how wet the rain forest is. I said out load, "this must be the first time he's never been able to light a fire." And to my surprise at that very moment he said the same thing. HAHAHA

In summary, don't knock the Intel. no matter how small, trivial or pointless it may seem be. It may be that little piece of information that wins the war...

PS: Showman are people that get caught up in the SHTF corporate BS on useless products they buy that they'll never use. Case in point. Does Bear Grylls use all that crap? The primitive thinking mind can be a tremendous assist.

PPS: Full disclosure. I've never served or have ever been in the intelligence business.

Use the battery to start a fire?

I still to this day have no idea what a "Kardashinan" is other than to speculate they are a tribe from some country that ends in stan like Uzbekistan... :D LMAO!

Actually, about the cellphone thing and my real white and nerdy knowledge about radio communications. During a natural disaster like a tornado or hurricane where the cell towers may be out of commission, the telephone companies roll out on a small trailer what is called a COW (Cell On Wheels). This way it helps to at least try to add some connectivity to a neighborhood. They'll also roll out a COW at sporting events, maybe concerts and other areas where there's a massive amount of people that will overload the traditional cell tower. So the COW helps add capacity to what will be an overloaded network.

And now you know and knowing is half the battle or something... Cobra! LOL (GI Joe beat Sesame Street hands down. There's just no competition. And Big Bird belonged on a Thanksgiving table)

It seems ever since what I believe to be the first reality TV show Survivor, we here in the U.S. have been bombarded by reality TV bull crap. And today my once precious History Channel is utter crap reality TV expose. I hear it's because it's cheaper to edit and what not. All about money and that point presents its self on commercial by commercial basis day in and day out with pill commercials. I honestly think there is a new pill once every week.

we are inundated with reality shows in the UK, you cant turn on a tv channel without seeing it.
I prefer natural history programmes and stuff like "Alaska: the last frontier", "building in Alaska", "Homestead Rescue" and "Yukon Man", although I suppose some people would class these as reality shows too.

Phones are multipurpose, off line maps, books, compass, GPS, music, videos and games. You might not be able to phone a friend but your phone is still a powerful tool. I've got a few phones kicking around but my new one is a Galaxy S20 and has 1TB of storage, thats a lot of data.

Films/movies are just a it of fun, I love horror/sci fi/end of the world stuff, its just entertainment.

I've recently 're-discovered' Ray Mears and really like the fella, I also enjoy Les Stroud but Bear Grylls is just an entertainer albeit a dangerous entertainer with some of the stunts he pulls.

I like some of the 'survival' shows and recently downloaded every episode of naked and afraid.

This fella is worth watching, very easy on the eye and another nice bloke

    Good morning Max,

If a phone goes offline, would GPS be available to a provate citizen ?

How would maps get updated with, for example, washed out roads, closed crime scene roads, buildings now infested with rats, restricted access areas ... ?

I try not to count on my phone per se....cell or land line....
As a matter of fact..I recently got rid of my land line.

Also many of these newer phones ...you cannot change out the battery in them.

I still have an olde flip phone and carry spare batteries with mine...two in my pocket daily along with four AA type batteries and also two phone batteries in my daily bob...

I can therefore also remove my batteries at my discretion...

One cannot do this with many of these new phones...I don't believe this is accidental.

I learned a very important life lesson about myself and also other people when I was in Iceland for a year. A lesson I don't believe is taught in videos, movies, or simulations..per se..

And that lesson is about ones psychological status and how quickly it can deteriorate when one is far away from home and what is familiar to you.....your friends and loved ones.

In places like Iceland you can watch people deteriorate day by day....mentally...took me about six months to snap out of it...and after that I was ok....but you learn things about yourself and others in a place like that.

One of the other guys got tired of me moping around depressed and told me ....how lucky I was to be in Iceland...I could be up in Tule, Greenland...
I had to chew on that one a bit but realized he was right...

But you watch people begin to weird out day by day....

I do not believe this kind of thing is taught in most movies and or U Tube videos....it has to be lived to be understood and experienced.

Part of that lesson sticks with me every day...though I left Iceland in the 70s.

You learn to spot this in the Submarine crews around which I have worked in this shipyard...they are not bothered by this kind of thing as are so many....cut from a different cloth so to speak. They can and tend to do well in long periods of isolation..and can so function well under those conditions. They have to ....those who cannot cut it are quickly shuffled out ...by the initially screening process and also again on the boats.
In that kind of condition ..you do not want people who are going to be a huge burden to your survival on a U Boat...get rid of them quickly.

I believe that in a survival situation...SHTF or TEOTWAWKI...this is going to show up rapidly......those who can cut it ...be functional under very deteriorated conditions ...useful and not be high maintenance...versus the Ishmaelite entitlement minded people who have survived by working the system..and attaching themselves and their brood to others to sustain them in every capacity.....cell phones or not...

I knew years ago there was something very wrong with the system when they began promoting being very social....and that loners were a bit off the beaten path....that to be social was to be the desired and cultivated MO....not individual independent thinkers...and thereby individual thinking actions to follow.

Over the years ..I began to learn that this kind of thing only makes you a better customer/consumer...also a more malleable, controllable, predictable, guaranteed voter.

Not talking about being an Island per se..but independent....and within this independence ...flexible....

    You folks decide for yourselves.

When talking about prepping matters, cell phones really are a non-item. Long before society begins crumbling in a very bad way, cell phone and internet services will drop to zero.

Post SHTF there will be no cell towers in operation. Civilian access to anything having to do with satellite comm will be gone. If any military actions occur, satellites are at the top of the list of things to be destroyed. No internet services will exist, that's for sure.

Anyone used to having technology at their fingertips should just figure on having to go cold turkey.

On this and most other prep sites, the topic of short-wave radio gets top billing. To run your short-wave systems, you'll have to have a generator. When times go bad, IF you have electricity, it will be intermittent. All things "high tech." will be gone gone gone.

This is sort of another topic, but I expect to see MASSIVE hacking attacks. I mean hey, the Chinese have dedicated military units whose mission is to bring down web services in enemy nations, i.e. The West and Russia. When China falls on hard times, they WILL NOT fall alone, they will pull-down everyone else. The whole "we need Chinese mass labor" is going to go out the window and this will put China on a war footing. Me, I see China in aggression mode right now. If China doesn't get its way, it WILL get even.

Power grids are mega-fragile. The internet is mega-fragile.

Prepping items include books -- physical books and manuals. There is soon going to be no internet.

GPS is not reliant on a cellular signal, its stand alone. Updates to maps won't happen but then you do have a map of an area you are unfamilar with and your going to have to deal with things like wash outs when you encounter them.

Flat battery ? Deal with it, you should have planned on that with power bank/solar charger et al Small hydro chargers are becoming more widely available, look on youtube there are some vids up

This looks very very promising, watch the clip (and someone explain it to Old Geezer who won't watch it because its on CNN)

    Good evening Max,

Wasn't thinking about cellular signals directly for GPS. Want to know how to obtain any GPS info.

I know SAT phones will not operate.

No electronics will be available to private citizens.

There are also windmills for boats but both the pictured small blue contrapion and the mast mounted (best closest to water line) presumes one can use it. Like motor vehicles requiring a permit - It used to be an ID card by driver - private citizen boats will not move or subject to vessel arrest.

Will glance at CNN link later.

It's completely passive via satellites and now phones can use other country's satellites like GLONASS. And your phone can make use of Europe's version called Galileo.

But yeah, in a major war don't rely on them. What we need is INS built inside GPS devices and if and when these sats get shot out of orbit replacements are ready to go almost immediately. I don't even want to go into just how much crap relies on GPS. Even farm combines use them now. I've always been of the opinion not to put all your eggs in one basket and have redundancy. This idea is used in moderns passenger jets with INS and GPS and in submarines. Maybe even on ocean ships.

Speaking of ocean navigation, perhaps a terrestrial based system could be used for a GPS backup in case sats are taken out. Long before GPS ships would use something called Loran-C. Something more modern like Loran-C combined with INS could be used, in fact, I think it should be used. The only ground-based system for GPS is called WAAS. But that just augments GPS for accuracy.

As are many fools. Poor Ma Bell... Fool in that traditional POTS carries its own power. 5 volts on tip, 45 volts on ring. If power goes out, have a tradition non battery operated phone. Yes, no cordless phones. I'm not talking about Ooma or your ISPs VOIP like what Comcast offers. Just straight up twisted pair phone service.

Yes you can. You can buy the tools and replacement batteries on eBay or Amazon. Just make sure the battery is OEM and not generic China crap least you have a fire.

This same thing applies to laptop replacement power adapters. Refrain from buying the knock offs. They more than likey have not be tested buy UL. I ALWAYS buy electrical crap that is UL and I verify that it is in fact UL listed. I did research on a good USB hub that had at least ten USB 3.0 ports and found one that was UL listed. To my surprise, many on Amazon were not, yet people buy them by the thousands! Some very myopic people buy power strips or cords on eBay or Amazon or even from a 99 cent store and that stuff isn't even UL listed so now you may have a fire on your hands.

This goes for the CCRs (Cheap Chinese Radios) you can buy for amateur radio, MURS or GMRS. When I charge mine I'm always near the charger.

Pro tip: GMRS is great for non-cell phone environments since there are many people putting up repeaters. The license is $70 for ten years and covers your immediate family. No test to take. https://www.fcc.gov/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs

Your radios should be part 95e...

Why would you need GPS if you have a map and compass?

I try not to get too dependent on my Cell Phone or on GPS or on a land line..
Even got rid of my land line of recent ...got tired of paying for two phone coverages.
That did not even make good nonsense..

As a ham radio operator I can make short phone calls on two meter or 70 CM repeaters.....but in the day of cell phones this is seldom used.

I can get ahold of my friend out in Tennessee some 400 miles away on certain nights.....if need be via long range HF radio....and don,t have to use up any cell phone minutes. I know where t0 find him and the times he is on the air. I will be catching him later tonight..

My HF ham radios will work on The CB band. My VHF/UHF will work on the GMRS/FRS frequencies ...same as those Wall Mart/Sports Authority walkie talkies...and also work on the MURS frequencies...

All of these are to be found on the web as to the exact frequencies...and all are available to me...

GPS is nice and very convenient....but agree with Max Rigger here....

Keep a set of maps as a back up ...learn to use them.....and replace them on occasion....maps get updated...

I like the Rand McNally set in the spiral bound books and don t mind paying for them..

More detailed and more local maps are also available if you want to invest..but I believe in maps as a back up and like cell phones ..I expect under certain conditions for the GPS to be shut down....buy government decree....

Don't get too dependent on cell phones or GPS....built yourself a back up plan here..

    Good morning Max,

The easy part is understood re a major war.

Speaking of the US, also add events that the national political establishment designates as matters to close down private citizen use of electronics.

I know that even before GPS availability in some areas, both LORAN and OMEGA proved unreliable - and this was in non major warfare.

The barnical Bills got out their sextants and made what we call in artillery recon "star shots".

It was the Beltway Sniper terrorist event that goet the attention of the public. The Navy Norfolk to Washigton, D.C. corridor is one of the most protected areas now. Measures are in place for EVERYTHING.

Nearly all horror films came from Hollywood not even relatable to me, I can't even understand what so scary about it. There are of course few exception such as The Exorcist, Poltergeist, etc, those are very relatable for me. And beside I don't need for any horror film. I've already experiencing nightmare with supranatural theme every 10 days or so

Max lets not confuse the American pensioner around here alright. They already married to their political narrative & their preferred news media. Anything to do with STEM will be thrown out of the window or shot using AR-15

No one uses a map anymore. They don't even sell them at gas stations and you can't even see a map in a phone book because those too are phased out.

Unless you buy paper topographic maps and know how to locate yourself withen 10 meters, civilians just don't use or need them.

Surprisingly maps are easy to find where I am, can even get some moderately good street maps in Walmart lol. But good map books and topographical are not hard to locate either.

    Good evening Varuna,

The Hollywood movies being discussed here are tailored for a US market's demographics.

Even "The Exocist" didn't scare me.

We both have different backgrounds than the typical movie goer.

Elsewhere, had already indirectly mentioned something about nightmares.

Movies and and do work when the targeted audience is addressed.

As an aside, America's Hollywood gets competion from India's Bollywood.

    Good evening Varuna,

I've got more STEM products and innovations here at compound than you have at your place.

For a Prepper when SHTF, electronic commo is out unless Prepper has a critical personnel role. A Prepper does require advanced-level pharma and some is available with effort. We've got a medical kit and dental trailer.

Recommend review what you wrote above.

    Goove evening F22,

Paper maps, both political (meaning non-topo) and topo - and also compasses - are still being sold by the big suppliers.

    Apparently, there is a market.

The pulp and modern versions of Islandic felspar , like magnetic compasses, are not a complete substitute for modern electronic versions. They are for filling voids when modern electronics is not available to the private citizen.

The cataclysimic events being discussed here mean than electronics - both for communications and the house/apartment refrigerator - will not be available to private citizens.

The next event might be on 3 or 4 November.

    Some Preppers are ready.

    Good morning Max,

There is at least another thread on EMT - somewhere. I posted the national effort link to address this.

Here, above, in re cataclysimic events such as a large terrorist one or a biowarfare matter, the USG can close down electronic use by private citizens. It does not require EMP.
