Remember...California/Hollywood, and New York are America..en toto!!!

All the rest of us are in flyover country.....only these places represent America...not us...this is automatic...an automatic default setting in everything.

    https://www.breitbart.com/entertain...wood-elites-on-how-they-can-help-win-georgia/

    and here about New York....

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...eme-courts-church-lockdown-ruling-irrelevant/

These two states in particular..represent all of America by default...

These states know much better than the rest of America as to what is best for the rest of us..our monies...our vote...our opinions.....our children et al..by default.

We on the other hand need have no voice in what happens in America by default We are to shut up and obey...like Fauci...and others.

Only these two States and particularly California/Hollywood are fit to represent all of America by default....what are the rest of us possibly thinking...???

    Like the BBC!!!?? Ishmaelite sources???

I did not get the view I posted from Brietbart News...I already had it for years and years now...long before Breitbart was around. Long before Fox as well.

Breitbart only confirmed what I was already thinking.

Brietbart and ZeroHedge mainly quote other news sources -- to include sources such as Al Jazeera. Events are events. The MSM gets its marching orders from sources such as Soros and the high-tech oligarchs. Children need a Big Brother to protect them, so when the MSM spews whatever bilge to support the international rape of Liberty, the sheep bleat in joy.

True preppers seek as much independence and self-sufficiency as is humanly possible. We have no time for taking care of those who will not take care of themselves.

Unpayable indebtedness is the leukemia that will soon kill Big Brother. I'll not be attending the funeral.

Whenever The Almighty steps on the satanic secular humanists, I rejoice. Some righteous people just killed the Iranian nuclear bomb guru. Praise God!

And there is the not so small matter of not being able to help. I can't. Social workers -- people who are paid to help people -- are some of the most jaded people on the planet. At some point in their career they throw up their hands. Some of the highest suicide rates are found among psychologists. It is mentally unhealthy to work with damaged people, trust me on this one.

Good quote, good thing to aim for but...sometimes things happen and you loose control, you need help, you can't get out of the situation you find yourself in and this is when the support structures society provides steps in and helps.

To think you can provide ALL you and your loved ones need is just BS fantasy.

we prepare for the unexpected, the "here and now" could be gone faster than anyone thinks, what if that support structure isnt there-lets say in 6 months time because the pandemic has caused an economic collapse and there is no money to pay for it because not enough people are working and paying tax.
Arcadia are closing down, thats 15,000 jobs for a start, plus all the businesses especially in the "hospitality" industry all over the country who shut during lock down and will never open again.
"failing to prepare is preparing to fail".
the only person who can take care of you-is you.

"I'm talking about the here and now not some dystopian scenario so many 'preppers' seem to long for."

Dystopian scenarios happen with nauseating regularity.

    > WWI "The war to end all wars", Peace and Enlightenment followed.
    > President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society created a utopia in America.
    > Hitler's "final solution" couldn't possibly have happened.
    > Socialism saved Venezuela.
    > The New York Trade Centers are still standing, right?
    > The Great Depression of the 1930s couldn't possibly happen again.
    > Printing trillions / quadrillions of fiat currency units has no consequences.
    > There being seven billion people on Earth (and growing) is sustainable.
    > Western countries are rich and can take in an infinite number of refugees without consequence.
    > Israel and its neighbors are bestest buddies -- and besides, there are no nuclear weapons in the Middle East.

Grasshoppers think about the here and now. Ants prepare for the 100% inevitable bad times.

Thinking about the here and now gets people killed. There are few greater pleasures than watching an arrogant person suffer and die. More O2 and food for decent people.

The best way to wipe out a herd is to take care of them. Cattle become soft and dependent ... ready for slaughter. Dad loosened up the machines to lure-in the gamblers and to give them false confidence. Then, he would take them. When an idiot raises back his head to laugh, his throat is exposed.

Watched a young man die in a company cafeteria. I finished my lunch and went back to my desk. Others sat there stunned. Maybe they'd not watched people die in the here and now.

or as some of us say: "Shit happens"!, its what one does about it that sorts the wheat from the chaff or the men from the boys.
some people will prepare in advance, other people will expect to be given stuff.
what if there isnt enough "stuff" to go around? how do you decide who goes without?
and what happens to those who go without?

Preppers can only do what preppers do. We try to dodge history's infinite repeats. If a boulder bounds down a mountain, all that I can do is attempt to get my family away from its path ... hopefully, prayerfully, humbly so.

I have an enormous amount of respect for the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum who left their cities when Vesuvius began to rumble. They were ridiculed mightily, no doubt. After Vesuvius did its thing, those who had once ridiculed the wise were left without words -- eternally so.

    Exactly lonewolfl,

I have preps here and at work..

Most people at work bring just enough to get them through that day....they do not prepare for anything else.

If something like the great reset comes down the situation at work will get wild..and also here on the street...

One needs to be very very discrete about ones preps....or you will be stormed by the entitlement minded...and often with great violence.

The 'here and now' never goes, it just changes with current circumstances.

Hospitality industry has been hit hard but will change and adapt, look at the idiots desperate to get out to Spain so they can burn on a beach. Get the vaccine flowing and the planes will be flying. High streets have gone and will never return, online shopping is now King. The great British pub has been in decline for years so you can't completely blame covid but new bars will open, more food orientated I'd guess; The days of a night out consisting of sitting in a smoke filled bar drinking overpriced beer have gone for good.

Bit of trivia for you, more families in the USA have an Amazon account than those that own guns.

    Max....your provincial thinking is showing...

My preps started years ago when I sat back and fully realized this is Hurricane Country. My initial preps were for weather related issues...but it did not take much reasoning to realize that our form of government via entitlements for votes/power was becoming more and more unstable...and by design....think Cloward/Piven.

No one in their right mind longs for a Hurricane..Max....telling me the status of you mind......

And that condition is exactly what you have in the UK...but much further along..entitlement
    minded..

Oh...and I agree with this....about Amazon accounts...where will these people go if the system shuts down ...natural or man made?????
    That is why we prep....

Hmmmmmm....Olde Geezer...you got me to remembering...

Years ago....we went in to the badge shack get our nuclear film badges...and were told that earlier that day someone had died right there of a heart attack. Turns out I knew him..and was a bit stunned....at the news..

But we had serious work to do that night and we had to keep our cool..and follow the very strict procedures in moving about this heavy and sensitive very expensive one of a kind equipment.

Sometimes you have to do that ...people are counting on you. Sometimes even a nation..

You cannot afford to be a drama queen......though some people feel so entitled..

This is why I do not like drama queens about me...nor entitlement minded people.

Holidays to Europe for us brits are dirt cheap, millions flock to the Spanish Costas/Portugal/Greece/Cyprus and I have no doubt they will do exactly the same when restrictions are lifted. That said Spain will be requiring a negative test result for entry to Spain and the talk is that in future entry will denied if you don't vaccinate which I completely agree with so travel flights will start to climb quickly, freight haulage by air is increasing anyway; it will take time but there will be a massive increase in European air traffic for sure.

I will buy my retirement home in Spain but I've decided not to go back until widespread vaccination has kicked in. Property prices there never fully recovered from the crash of 07/08 and prices won't be going up for a long time so its a buyers market. Much of the Spanish economy was based on property which is why there are still tens of thousands of empty homes out there.

Whats Concorde got to do with it?

Bit more trivia, its cheaper to fly return UK to Spain than travel 100 miles by train to London (if you shop around for tickets).

    Good evening Max,

If the hospitality (lodging, restaurants) trade is shrinking and so, too, the airlines,..I've posted a couple of articles on smaller air fleets and payrolls ... why no doubt matters will return to "normal", pre-pandemic ?

Concorde was a state of the art enhancement that collapsed due to costs. Concorde was a specific illustration to my point that the travel industry is changing substantially even now prior to mass immunization programs.

When the world's fiat currencies collapse in 2021 - 2022 there will be no recovery for at least a decade.

It's great that Mossad killed Iran's top nuclear weapons scientist, however nothing can prevent the coming nuclear war in the Middle East. Some Kamala or Biden "Peace Pact" with Iran will set the stage. North Korea is likely to supply nukes to some terrorist group (likely a pro-Palestinian crew). Both Pakistan and India will one day use their nukes on each other. China and India are now having a shooting conflict in their border region. On and on ...

Even the Communist News Network reports that North Korea has nukes. I guess China gave CNN permission to print this information as a threat to the West; i.e. we don't have to nuke you, we'll enable North Korea to send WMDs to Iran and/or whoever else, and they'll nuke/EMP you for us.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/04/asia/un-north-korea-nukes-report-intl/index.html

"United Nations (CNN) North Korea is continuing work on its nuclear program and several countries believe Pyongyang has made gains in producing ballistic missiles with small nuclear devices attached, according to a confidential United Nations (UN) report, a UN diplomat told CNN.

"The latest report was prepared by a UN-appointed independent panel of experts, who are charged with monitoring sanctions enforcement and efficacy. It says the unnamed countries believe North Korea 'probably developed miniaturized nuclear devices to fit into the warheads of its ballistic missiles.'

"The experts, who do not have access to North Korea, rely on UN countries to supply intelligence information.

"The report, which concludes that North Korea remains in violation of UN sanctions, has been circulated to the 15-nation Security Council. UN diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, provided different segments of the report to CNN.

"The report says 'the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is continuing its nuclear program, including the production of highly enriched uranium and construction of an experimental light water reactor. A member state assessed that the DRPK is continuing production of nuclear weapons.'"

The world in the next two to four years will have catastrophic events occur that are going to take generations to repair. There's not going to be any such thing as retirements during this period.

If one believes otherwise, they are not a prepper.

Just being an "outdoors person" / camper means NOTHING. No food preparation, no water-filtration preps, no firearms/ammo preps = Death. If you cannot defend what you have, you will be wiped-out by looters or armed gangs, no military nor police are coming to your aid (deserters may be the ones doing the robbing and looting). Uniforms and badges come in real handy when executing a home invasion.

Campers and tents are usually NOT bullet-proof. Any deer rifle will shoot through both sides of a camping van / caravan. Start a tiny fire somewhat near the propane tanks of a camper, back off a couple hundred yards, then send an FMJ through one of those tanks. You'll be glad you were very far back when that furious festivity leaps into the atmosphere.

Actually, there isn't much in the civilian world that does offer much protection against a high powered rifle. Don't hide behind a car. Unless you are behind the motor you are likely to get shot. A house, even a brick veneer house, has no place in it that you are safe. TV is always showing bullets bouncing off of cars and that is just silly.

If you want something to hide behind then you need about a foot to 18 inches of solid matter. I like old tires that are stacked and then filled with sand and have a cement cap on top. If you place this on the top perimeter of a hole in the ground it is even better. A foot of concrete is good but if you don't put plenty of steel mesh ware and rebar in it you will lose it to a sustained level of fire and find yourself trying to hide behind a pile of rubble.

There is a very good reason why even in these modern times that the old fox hole is still a military favorite.

Some people fail to look at all sides of an issue. Take Air lines. They need business travelers and business people have learned it is cheaper and much safer to do video chat conferences. The "Green New Deal" people do not like air polluting planes flying about, so under the guise of health protection (CCP virus protection) they will get the government to pass regulations on seat spacing, cabin air quality and thus only flights to the main destinations ( big cities) will be profitable and then only the corporate business flyers and the rich will be able to afford the tickets. The same hindrances will also be applied to the hospitality industry, to keep those prices too high for the serfs to afford. The cheaper motels / hotels will be taken over by the government to become the new affordable housing for the homeless. As people are ready to surrender their freedoms, the government is more than willing to take away those freedoms.

Here I am living in a frame home. Ugh! One of our houses was a large brick home -- I so liked that place.

I've put back and use large heavy garden bricks. When the depression hits (soon coming), I'll be washing bricks and bringing them inside the house to build interior walls to stop any bullets heading in. Find your in-home strategic locations and reinforce to provide cover.

Heard gunfire close down the road this past week -- we do have some drug-gang knuckle-draggers about (both Caucasian and African origin). Notified deputies (called 911 and I NEVER call the cops) = no patrol cars responded. Lots of places in America, one is on their own. OK with me ... so long as they leave me alone should I have to get some things done myself. Quite frankly, if cops don't respond to gunfire calls, that's in my favor. Good intel, them not showing up.

Nice houses all about, yet there are always the throw-backs in society. Even in agricultural areas, you have your "hillbilly heroin" an crystal meth trades. When it hits the fan and the police lose control, that's when the locals will "deal with matters". Stirs up memories of an uncle of mine and his buddies riding with the county deputies getting things done when the sun went down.

Though unable to stop high velocity bullets, frame walls do yaw a bullet. A yawed bullet can be stopped by masonry, even silly tile can work if it is laminated in layers of fiberglass.

I've purchased some heavy fire extinguishers also. Our dog is hyper-alert and will go to the section of the house where it detects trouble. As I sit here, our battery-backed-up electronic security is switched-on. Of course also, I've a revolver on me and a pump loaded for the wife to grab and use.

One must trust his wife or be ready to meet the Lord should she be a believer in euthanasia. Whichever. (She pulled a rifle on me once :D:D:D:D:D:D, mistaken identity; I told her she did good.)

NOTHING will ever be the same as it was PRE Covid, was only discussing this with the wife this morning, BIL has his own business and rents an office, during lock downs the staff have all been working from home and we think many firms will continue doing this as it is cuts the costs, no rents, no commuting, etc.etc.
I know that most people think "nothing bad will happen" but thats not logical, going along and expecting nothing bad to happen is wishful thinking, better to prepare and nothing bad happens than to not prepare and it all goes to hell in a handcart, look at Cuba, look at Venezula, look at Zimbabwe, South Africa, the list goes on.
even Covid was never heard of before the China infections started.
The Twin Towers were supposed to stand forever.
Chernobyl wasnt expected to blow up.
SHTF all the time, its how one deals with it thats important, sit back and do nothing and expect someone else-govt or NGO's- to solve all your problems or do you sit up and start thinking what you could do to take care of yourself?

Concorde was a state of the art bit of kit fifty years ago when it was designed and realistically should have been gracefully retired earlier, well past its use by date.

You don't understand brits and their two weeks in the sun, its not like America where few leave the nest, over here millions of people do and having two overseas holidays a year is no longer uncommon. Cheap flights mean millions of others fly off for a weekend, UK hotels are grossly overpriced and its often cheaper to fly out to somewhere like Spain or Portugal and get accommodation there than it is to stay in the UK.

aint that the truth!! depends on the type of "hotel" though , some are really expensive, plenty of other places to stay.
I did read a piece this morning that said after 1st January any Brit staying in their "holiday home" in the EU will only be allowed to stay 3 months out of every 6.
there is plenty to see and do in this country. I dont think I could cope with all those queue's at the airport.

Its not written in stone, Spain is honoring a lot of stuff to do with OAP expats out there but basically after 1st Jan you will be restricted all over the EU, we'll just be the same as the yanks and russians keen to move there. In the USA brits can only stay 90 days IIRC without a visa (shame in some ways, American property is dirt cheap compared to the UK).

Another thing post brexit is that at the moment if you retire out there you need about £5000 per person in the bank (there are some regional variations) and an income of about £900 for a couple but after brexit you will need a lot more in the bank and an income of £30k per year per person and proof of full medical insurance...thank you brexit.

Americans don't have to leave home to view nature's beauty and find kind people.

Few Americans travel to American cities anymore; too much crime and most urban souls are spiritually dead. Only a foreigner would find American cities hospitable.

    Good evening Max,

Actually, Concorde was not designed. It was a civilian version of the US Valkarie bomber but with pax liquor supplies and no room for heavy coats.

I do understand Brits and have traveled with them on discount tour groups - from HK base.

Disregard "few". Many Americans travel to resorts, to research sites (grants pay for this), combination business trips with holiday (company already pays for round trip ticket and traveler just spends $ for personal holiday/vacation).

How do you know "cheap flights" will continue ? I remember when gasoline in the US was "cheap". President Jimmy Carter required me to change my understanding of "cheap".

Concord was designed I thought, I look forward to you producing links showing it was just a tarted up US Valkarie bomber.

When I said Americans don't travel I meant they don't leave the USA much, don't get to experience other cultures sort of thing, that said most brits in Spain don't go there to experience the culture. Tour groups from honkers ain't representative of the average brits trip to Europe.

"How do you know "cheap flights" will continue ? " How do you know they won't? You simply don't grasp the brits love of that one or two vacations a year. 2019 around 18 million went to Spain, around 10 million to France, about 5 million to Italy and 4 million to Greece so the demand for cheap flights is there so the airlines can offer cheap flights or go bust. It is a lot easier for brits, we are close to Europe and we get far more paid leave than Americans.

    Good morning Max,

I will not play semantics with you.

My Concorde example was to illustrate the advancing civil airline industry having a setback. You either missed my point or playing semantics.

US airports - and seaports - are packed with US travelers for US destinations and also foreign destinations. Americans experience as much - if not more - cultures than British travelers.

US citizen travel is not focused to continental Europe. US citizens go just about everywhere.

I concede not knowing if cheap flights will continue or not. Was only guessing they will not.

Of course the men of these countries can do nothing to protect their women lest they end up in jail. Disarm the men. Use the women. "Progress", the way of the future. Has Mommy government yet given you permission to own a centerfire deer rifle yet, Max?

The men of Austria and Hungary are buying-up all the shotguns available. They are blocking the Muslim invaders from entering their countries. They are telling the Euro-zone to go take a hike. But then, they are men.

isnt that down to the cost of oil? if the price of oil goes up so will the flight price.

No you said it was based on a prototype American supersonic plane and it wasn't. If fact designers were looking at this type of design back in the late 40s.

Americans don't experience more culture than brits, we travel more and not just Europe and Americans I've found don't go anywhere without a travel guide, just not adventurous plus of course the UK is far more culturally integrated society than the USA. You do see quite a lot on young Americans packpacking on the cheap but thats the same with Australians and New Zealanders. When I was serving I met met Americans who never left the base, never wanted to see the country they were living in and I'm talking about Germany now not some battle zone, very insular people.

Bit of Trivia, what is the UK's favorite take away food ? Fish & Chips? Nope, its Indian curry :)

The United States version of the SST/Supersonic Transport....was killed because of the price of the ticket to make a profit was prohibitive....and would need government subsidies..

This is exactly what happened to the Concorde...government subsidies...

IT could not be maintained in a time of rising costs and an aging air fleet of Concorde planes. It could not be justified.

American planners and designers had at least that much common sense....so too politicians in those days...

I don't know if this could still be done today with this new generation of engines which can go to supersonic speeds without afterburner....

I suspect these engines are still classified....and very very expensive.

    by Max Rigger...

    Not too bright Max....

Not much was known about supersonic flight in the 1940s with the exception that the sound barrier was considered an un breakable wall...compression...and many of the planes which approached these speeds their controls tended not work well and all to often crashed..
There were indeed people working on designs which could reach higher and higher speeds..with new designs and materials.
The De Havilland Mosquito comes to mind...revolutionary in it's day...

Sustained supersonic speeds was something different from just reaching supersonic..

To my limited knowledge much testing and information on this came out of the X 15 rocket plane flights....and this knowledge/ information began to be incorporated into materials and designs of future aircraft..

Jet engines had not quite caught up to this threshold of speed/ flight....and are still today lacking..

Much of this information began to be shared world wide through NASA.....to various aircraft design companies....particularly in materials required...for sustained high speed flight...

The Apex of this kind of design is not the Concorde or the American SST design..but the A12 or SR 71 aircraft...
and it involves a kind of refrigeration of the aircraft skin for sustained supersonic flight...drawing off the heat buildup..and passing this heat out through the engines..

Nonetheless ..these sustained supersonic flight type aircraft are very very expensive.....thus needing high ticket prices and or government subsidies.

Oh...and the swept wing design today so popular was, again to my limited knowledge, studied by the Germans/Nazis..with a variable swept wing designed aircraft wherein the aircraft wings were unpinned upon landing and then moved to another angle of swept wing and repined. . There was no variable swing wing mechanism available in those days...but the design of a swing wing was stunning to the Allied Occupiers who overtook these experimental air bases of the Nazis as the war came to an end..

The Allies were stunned...shocked at what they found...

Just like they were shocked/stunned to learn that the Nazis had designed a snorkel mast for their submarines wherein they could charge their batteries while mostly submerged...instead of totally bringing the boat to the surface wherein the boat would be vulnerable and more easily seen/visible.

And today these designs are incorporated into western aircraft and submarines albeit with updated materials and mechanical mechanisms.

Peasant food irrespective of culture is often highly spiced because the spiciness helps cover-up the smell of rot.

If eating in a Mexican restaurant, I order the carnitas, pork. When you get pork at such a place, they have cooked the meat long enough (often a bit too long) and it has not been ground -- you're not getting "mystery meat" and you'll be less likely to end up with dysentery. There are many Mexican restaurants in the USA; however, everyone locates the safe ones. The ones that give European-blooded people dysentery are frequented by people of Hispanic origin -- their GI systems are genetically adapted to the pathogens sometimes found in these restaurants. Hispanics find our diet bland.

I like peppers. Still have some that we grew this year; they are drying and are now ready to be ground-up. Freshly-ground peppers have an aroma that many people crave -- these flavonoids turn out to be powerful anti-oxidants. Gardens in my family history always had peppers growing. Onions were popular and when you run out of onions, you dig ramps, just like the original people. It paid-off mixing with the Cherokee -- they were both robust and intelligent. They could be very OCD/organized/disciplined = survival. We used their knowledge and they immediately pick-up on and used our knowledge. They are still here in this region.

Again, many cultures greatly OVERLOAD their food with peppers due to the rot factor -- it's what the spice trade was all about; Europe had poor food preservation methods. The best meat is fresh-kill. Store-bought meat tastes "different" due to preservatives.

During the British Raj, an English worker or soldier could often do 2x to 3x the work of a local laborer if that worker was Hindu. Having sufficient meat in the diet allows a human to manufacture hemoglobin and myoglobin. Humans are unable to manufacture their own B12 -- we are not herbivores. Not enough B12 = anemia. We do not need a whole lot of iron in our diet, yet we do require iron intake. Iron isn't available for the manufacture of hemoglobin nor myoglobin without B12. B12 allows for proper iron levels in the blood.

On VE (Victory in Europe) day 1945 Barnes Wallace the bouncing bomb designer noted in his diary that he was going back to his Delta wing supersonic aircraft design so the basic design concept is not new. The delta wing is a fantastic design

The Germans were well ahead in aircraft design, first operational jet fighters and jet to go but too late in the war for them. The Horton plane could have caused a lot of problems, its materials and design gave it a very very low radar profile it was half way to being 'stealth' Imaging if Hitler had developed that plane and nuclear bombs...bye bye London and New York.

    Max Rigger,

Agree...the delta wing design is not new ..it goes back a long way.

    Delta wing - Wikipedia

I have seen the Vulcan Bombers up in Canada when we stopped in Newfoundland on a hop over to England in our C 130 aircraft on the way to and fro RAF Mildenhall.

They are a very large aircraft and sit quite high off the ground..

Agree about the Germans...they were ahead of many nations in aircraft design..but the war was pressing them very hard in factory and material spaces....availability.

When we were stationed in Keflavik, Iceland ..years ago the US Air Force was flying an early delta winged aircraft the F 102 interceptors..and later switched out to F4 C Phantoms.

Right up the road from me at Langley AFB they used to keep in their alert barns..the F 106 Delta Winged interceptors...the replacement for the F 102 we had in Iceland.

They have been replaced today with F 16 Fighters.

Seems to me that they tried to experiment with an version of the F 16 in a delta configuration and I've seen one of them at a public showing at the NASA Langley facility across from Langley Air Force Base.

This airplane was strikingly beautiful in it's lines..but I know little about how it performed and for some reason it was not produced with the exception of these prototypes.

    General Dynamics F-16XL - Wikipedia

Oh....and the A12 and SR 71 type aircraft are a type of Delta configuration as well...Ironic to me..
Probably best they grounded them....they were spending more and more time in maintenance and less time in the air and also very expensive to operate. Much of what they did is today taken over by satellite and drones.
Seems to me that one of the appeals of the Delta wing is that it can usually hold more fuel than conventional wing designs..
I expect that an aircraft like the A12 or SR 71 can burn through a lot of fuel at those speeds.

Ironic to me that the U2 aircraft are still flying...though older than the A12/SR 71 designs.
Much less expensive to operate....though much of what they did is also taken over by satellite and drones.

    Thanks,

I would think the days of manned military aircraft are numbered given advances in technology, no more Topgun, just a nerd sitting at a computer :(

I'm a believer in off world UFOs, that will be fun when they eventually show themselves

    Good morning Max,

"In general, one must not generalize." Anon.

Your experiences are limited based on what you personally present here.

Americans travel extensively, both within the US - less the dwindling travel to the once-famous cities with their one famous landmarks and attractions - and ALL areas overseas...to include needing special permission for travel to certain destinations. I even have an old passport with the Libya endorsement.

Most Americans do not hire guides. For the record, I am an American. When I took a trip with some HK-resident Brits on the TransSiberian Railroad, we hired no guide. We did hire a(n) historian. Both us Americans and Brits learned much without any guide.

The UK is not more integrated by culture than the US. This cannot be measured. If you add to the UK the former Dominions, a possible comparison can be made. It will still have little meaning because of large pockets of non-assimiliated.

The Americans you met in Germany - presuming this to mean US soldiers - are not even representative of "soldiers". The US element in Germany has been sought to be closed down for years. Efforts stalled to remove about a third. This continent of soldiers is reall ypart of America's "disguised unemployment".

The BIG US base in Europe is Sigonella, Sicily, Italy. Officially it's a NATO base. I was working a project with AGIP, ENI-Italian National Hydrocarbons Authority offshore Sicily. Took a week off with some USN reservists on active duty at "Sig" and we traveled to Tunis, Tunesia to visit and help out at the US WWII military cemetery. No guides were with us, nor needed.

If you are interested, you'd know that much of the US military is "contracted out" and not showing up in the media.

With December now here, will close by mentioning - even with the official travel restrictions - MANY (relative to the small air traveler population now) Americans will be going to Bethelem, Israel for the visit to the Church of the Nativity. Much wealth here for these trips and they are expensive. Road Town, BVI will not suffer from a lack of American visitors.

    In general, don't generalize.

Travelling in any single country does not open you to new cultures though. Brits are far more multicultural than the average American, we live on a small island containing many nationalities next door to a large landmass containing many countries.

Remember I work a lot with Americans not just personnel in Germany, middle east and Cyprus, very insular bunch who are really just not interested in experiencing anything thats not American, very blinkered and this is plain to see online, forums etc...this one is a fine example.

Lots of Jews will be travelling shortly, a 14 day quarantine won't put them of thats for sure.

PS, Great PX at Sigonella ;)

I dont agree Britain is multicultural, more a case of many cultures, many of whom do not mix.
as for Brits going abroad on holiday, most just want to sit by the pool and never venture outside of the holiday resort.

    Good morning Max,

Obviously you never traveled in the former Soviet Union nor in the current Russia. Many cultures available to learn about - from the foods to the churches to the local constabularies to helping locals address envelopes to Hong Kong and US addresses. It's nearly the same for China although the non-Han "cultures" are mostly on the periphery of the country. China and rice are not prevalent in the wheat and buckwheat areas - although rice now trucked in.

What you call "insular" Americans are those you were meeting or in environments with, such as Germany and the 2 UK sovereign base areas in S. Cyprus. Most say the opposite; Americans with military service, less the disguised unemployed, are more open to the world and it's different cultures than otherwise. You've been meeting the insular and not those who absorb experiences for the best aspects.

Online knowledge is akin to watching television soap operas.

Most American Jews - well over 51% - are merely heritage Jews or Yevsektsiya. I saw the demographic statistics when I worked in D.C.

Yes, the Base Exchange in Sigonella was super. Probably still is.
