I was at my local gun shop last week and they have in a Ruger American Hunter bolt action rifle in 308Win and 6.5 Creedmore with a 18 inch barrel. It's a very good looking gun and they have it at an awesome price ($650) so I'm considering adding it to the collection. Wondering if anyone has one and what your experience with it has been. Does anyone use the MagPul bolt action stock? Thoughts?

The price of this rifle is significantly lower than what I have read as being suggested retail price, $799, i.e. $800. Normally, I'd say that this is pricey; however, maybe in this day and age, it is a good price.:eek:

A 20 inch barrel in .308 is plenty of barrel -- the cartridge's powder will almost ALL be burned and thus turned into bullet velocity. A 20 inch barrel in 6.5 Crdmr is insufficient and will result in loss of velocity and a goodly amount of powder being burned beyond the rifle muzzle (loud report).

You would be getting a Ruger for the price of a Mossberg.

Spend any time at the range and you will be able to spot the larger caliber rifles with short barrels by the amount of smoke they generate when fired. Accuracy at typical shooting range distances (100 to 200 yards) is not a big deal but as a battle rifle, it will be a lot easier for people to spot your firing position by the cloud of smoke generated. I agree with OG on the importance of barrel length to match caliber.

Here's what I like as a handy-rifle / "truck gun" / "scout rifle". I like the short Mosin Nagants (7.62 x 54R chambering). The M44, I like best. I want a hooded front sight. I remove the bayonets and front furniture on the ones I've sporterized. The bayonets could negatively affect accuracy, so I've just tossed them from the get-go.

OK, so they kick like a mule; however, they sure do get the job done. I floated the barrel on one and it turns out better than decent accuracy. I used to be able to get these for around $200 - $250 each, but not since people started panic-buying everything. I was in a gun store last week and all the ammo was gone (freaky-crazy:confused:), however they still had 7.62 Nagant in hunting (soft nose) ammo. Military surplus ammo is good for range-blasting practice (I wax the stripper clips for slicker operation).

I have a Mossberg Patrol rifle ...in 7.62 x 51mm....also known as .308 Winchester. The thing I don't particularly like about it is the barrel length.

However...one reason I chose it is that it comes with iron sights. They are not the best sights...but they are iron sights.

Also it will take various magazines ...not factory issue. I use Magpul magazines but it will also take M14 magazines. This is not the case with Ruger...in that they take proprietary factory Ruger magazines. I believe this is also the case with the Savage
    rifles...must use Savage magazines.

You people choose for yourselves..but that was my rationale...not stuck to factory issue magazines...and comes with iron sights.

Smart stuff you got going on, Watcherchris. I think maybe I posted something about where one could get front and rear sights that are robust. Call me superstitious, but I gotta have iron sights to back up glass. Life has burned a "don't trust" attitude into me. Sh## doesn't just happen, it happens with sickening regularity.

I use an AAC 30 caliber suppressor for all short barrels in 30 caliber. Eliminates the flash and barrel noise. Doesn't do anything for the supersonic crack, unless I use subsonic loads. Then she is mighty quiet. Most of the deer I see are within 200 yards.

"... smoke they generate when fired"

    Not to mention the flame.

    Smart stuff.

Post SHTF, being heard in the next county just can't be considered a good thing.

Super-sonic crack, not so good, but certainly not tragic.

Boom! -- now that's downright bad. Under most circumstances, instantly gaining "new friends" is not high on my priority list. Those in the know know that whispers are deadly. Satan goes about in stocking feet and avoids squeaky boards.

Once I can get the reloading supplies, subsonic is on my list to develop.

I first used suppressors/silencers in the Army and it was then that I found out how confusing that supersonic crack can be for an enemy. The crack sounds as though it comes from a 90 degree angel from your location or depending on terrain it can sound like it comes from 180 degrees from your location. The enemy thanks that your are on one of their flanks or behind them. This makes locating you as the shooter almost impossible. Even game reacts the same way. I've had deer run straight at me while looking behind themselves for what was hurting them. My 22LR suppressor on my bolt action rifle actually makes "0" noise at the rifle with subsonic ammo and all I hear is the round impacting down range.

That rifle with night vision scope or a helmet mounted NOD monocular, is a lethal combination.
