    Good morning all,

    Per ...

I'm sure this 1984 vehicle can meet many objectives.

Still, what about the older vehicles ? The 4X4 ambulance has a shelter as part of the unit.

The old Duce and A Half had a built-in air matress inflaterer via their air brakes presuming anyone had an air mattress that could hold air.

My Fort Hood three quarter ton (I think [ like a panel truck]) came with an artillery-required AN-GRC-5 ("Angry 5") radio. A nice lifer showed me how to tune it into the AM radio station at Nairobi, Kenya with rock music.

For a short time until it became distrss merchandice, the US Army had a model truck named "Gamma Goat".

If a good ol' pre-electronic, mechanical Fort F-150 won't do the job, ....

Mules are the only viable substitute.

(but mules can't be used near the tubes. They react to the firings. )

too big too huge for over here, the South west of England has very little if no motorways and the country roads are too narrow for such vehicles.
I'd rather have the Mules myself but we dont get many Mules in the UK, there is a Donkey sanctuary on the south coast.

Something like this snowcat would be better in my parts. Certainly in the summer, the M923 or 2.5 tons referenced in the OP are all over Alaska playing around in the bush.

I had two gamma goats in my platoon when I entered active duty. Not sure they could ever be maintained well enough as they were always on deadline report back in the day. I guess it was someone's good idea on paper. If fully operational, they would probably do OK in bush Alaska, until they break.

Alaska John, is there a guesstimate of cost for private citizen purchase ? Just curious.

Trail bike type of motorcycle would be best if you were traveling light. Put your stuff in a backpack or rig some sort of a saddle-pack. Roads will be blocked/jammed, so you'll be pressed to go off-road. Farmers and some hunters are using all-terrain vehicles.

For the one like I posted, used in Alaska will go for maybe $20K. They can get real expensive new and can get very fancy with attachments pushing prices well into the quarter million dollar mark if fully equipped.

I did a quick search and this little guy can be had for $13K

And this one for about $30K

    21432728_1508693699153301_2439603720893032828_n.jpg

Into a hybrid version of this,

I will have a cargo carrier on the top of mine and a helicopter shooting rig in the passenger doorway for a more stabile shooting platform. It already has a 3/8" Lexan windshield and an overhead weapons rack. Getting a mobile radio that is compatible with our hand held models.

    I want one.

Watched a TV show about big semi trucks making deliveries in Australia's Outback. Needless to say that they are forever getting stuck in mud or sand. Your machine-gun-equiped all-terrain vehicle would be a perfect run-about in the Aussie Outback regions. You need the machine-guns for the crocodiles.

Some mountain roads are so rutted that you need "stepladder road clearance". That's why you see some county trucks that look like the following:

Yeh, I know that you live in W.Vir.. The wifer and I've been watching some trucker show set in Australia. Their weather Down-Under swings radically, so they have tropical-like areas and DRY desert areas ... which sometimes swap places = very strange. The vehicle you describe would be just the ticket for the Land Down-Under.

Forestry Service hates that logging "roads" wash-out as the do. I've tried to take my small SUV back in the forests but run into "I can't go any further" or somebody's steel gates. I scout bug-out routes. There just aren't many places to get across the mountains, yet I try to find them.

One washed out road I attempted to use started turning into a mountain trail then I got stopped by somebody's gate. Only 300 yards more and I could have hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. If I had that vehicle you are going to build and my bolt cutters (propped-up behind me in my office here at home), I would have been able to get down to a higher elevation area of the Parkway. In an emergency and with other roads blocked and if some property owners didn't shoot me, that could have proven to be an alternate bug-out route.

Interesting story: on a mountain road area of that same mountain, two identical white suburbans with blacked-out windows passed me -- one right behind the other. I was coming down off the mountain and they were going up to one of two mountain-top properties I knew to be up there but with mean looking "Do Not Enter" signs at gates. (Satellite photos showed cleared forest and building structures.) These vehicles bespoke government whatever. That was yet another warning to me that trying to find a mountain pass up there was not going to happen for me. Old maps showed that once there were roads up there that continued to other side of mountain. Well those passages are now too dangerous for multiple reasons.

Sometimes you run into local yokels. Sometimes you run into sh## you don't want to know about.

I am actually building this vehicle for family recovery after a TEOTWAWKI or major SHTF event. It's stored in a large Faraday cage (grounded and mounted on 1" of live rubber) so that it will always be usable. I have bolt cutters and a couple thermite grenades for any lock emergency that might arise. In an emergency, I figure the 12 gauge would handle most lock emergencies.

My Can Am Commander does very well on my local goat trails, but I think I'm going to raise it another 4 to 6 inches so I'll have around 20" of ground clearance. I've used it out west in Colorado up in the national forest and down in Florida on the beaches and swamp trails and it makes me happy. Haven't been stuck yet.

Sounds like great beginning idea and now with adaptations it is becoming just the machine to get one where they need to go. Too, it doesn't drink fuel like other large vehicles. You may have already considered having fuel storage tanks on your property. Hide them well. You likely already have a hitch on it for trailers.

Fuel was a major consideration. I have can's and mounts for 20 gallons of extra fuel as well as a fuel siphon that passes by anti-theft devices in modern vehicles (in case the roads are full of EMP disabled vehicles).

I considered a trailer for use after SHTF but it would be in my home area and not when I was looking for a loved one. Trailer cuts down on maneuverability, speed and fuel use. That's OK if I'm local on a trade run or hunting. Currently, one tank of fuel will take me over 300 miles. Have the plans for a off road trailer, like this.

All these vehicle pictures are a Prepper's love at first sight !

It does take a group to acquire and maintain them, though - less those loaded with $$$.

Our main vehicle is an inflatable for Chesapeake Bay GOOD evacs and it's somewhat costly to augment with the "extras".

I go hunting and trekking the old way by foot, snow shoe, or cross country ski or canoe . I see every one whizzing by me on all sort of atv, jeeps, snow cats , power boats . i see tracks on the trail for all sorts of stuff and if you just take you time lynx and read the story you get what is going on. but all these people flying by do not . I see snow shoe rabbits being chased by lynx, foxes doing their rounds , partridge hiding in snow .so with all due respect to the machines i'll stick to my way by foot.

I understand your annoyance with people misusing machines. They are bad in my area to road hunt (which is illegal) especially during deer season. I have hunted and trapped most of my life. Most of it on foot. Don't get me wrong, I love using my side by side, but I use it as a tool, not a plaything. I save my walking these days for pre scouting my hunting areas or looking over new trapping areas. My Commander is great for getting me away from crowds and over used areas and was good out west at getting me into areas where others weren't going.

I guess I use mine similar to how special operations soldiers use theirs. There fast, relatively quiet, able to be hid easily, make a great observation platform and can travel a long ways on the fuel they can haul. With the fuel in the tank and the extra 20 gallons it can carry i could travel almost 1000 miles before needing to look for extra fuel. There is a reason many military units started using them. My oldest daughter now lives in Huntsville, AL (504 miles) from my house. If things went wrong and I had to go get her. I can be there in 1 day and head for home the next and with my brother or I driving and the other one on the gun...God help the fool that tries to stop us.

Good farm vehicle but no matter how many weapons you mount on it all it takes is one shot and your dead, zero protection on that vehicle. All your doing mounting weapons is making you look like an offensive vehicle, you go approaching a bunch of strangers in that comes a SHTF event and I'd say they'd shoot you dead before chatting with you.

Max, haven't you read about the Brits' WWII LRDG - Long Range Desert Group ?

Dale was in LRRP - Long Range Recon Patrol. Is it not realistic to envision armor sheet from a boat not needed when the mobility and speed are the substitute ?

    These go-carts do work.

In the U.S. back in the late 1960's there was a TV show "Rat Patrol". The series was loosely based on British special forces military activities in North Africa during WWII. The British and we Yanks were fighting Rommel's heavy armor divisions. I think that it was the British SAS who were involved in this. The idea was that of some British officer who wanted to engage the enemy with "shoot and scoot" raids. Being an American, I like the concept. During the Revolutionary War, colonist militia would use "shoot'n'scoot" tactics against British forces. In revolutionary wars or civil wars, smaller units of resistance obviously can't go up against superior forces, therefore sniping / "picking-off" hits / shoot'n'scoot are the most effective tools one has.

These sorts of raids are also psych-ops in that they decrease enemy morale. One enemy trooper is speaking with his mate, then his mate's head explodes. The enemy is encamped; then out of nowhere, they begin taking aimed rapid fire or some mobile mortar crew starts dropping in ordinance, then scoots away before any retaliatory strike can be effected.

Before vehicles, there were horseback cavalry units that effected rapid attack / rapid retreat operations. Look at what American Indians did to U.S. Army units back in the 1800s. The only reason that we iron-agers conquered them was due to our shear numbers and the introduction of European diseases into aboriginal populations. They were better warriors than us and we knew it. To this day, we respect their warriors and document their bravery. Let us remember that they did their mighty deeds on the backs of fast horses.

As to machines, there's a lot to be said about speed, mobility, and the defeat of nasty terrain that other heavier vehicles simply cannot cross at speed. Sometimes, one doesn't need big engines, the heavy armor, and all the other clunkity-clunk equipment. Sometimes you gotta run light. Gotta get in, do the deed, then get the hell out.

Max, Your a good troll but you apparently don't know shit about military tactics. You also have no idea what a helicopter rig is for stabilizing weapons by what you wrote.

Hope it doesn't break your little heart, but I think I'll stick with my lifetime of experience and training and ignore your advice. Every now and then you say something smart and I start thinking your learning about prepping or at least paying attention. Then you say something like this and your back to square one.

Since your such an expert on all things prepping, what kind of bug out vehicle or get out of dodge vehicle(s) do you have? Please enlighten the rest of us.

They stopped using soft skin vehicles because they are an easy target so whatever you fit to it you will become an easy soft target. You going to mount psyops speakers and roll up playing Wagner LOL ?

BOV? Don't really have a specific one, I have the campervan and now have a Discovery I bought on my last trip home so do they count given the mound of camping kit I have?

    Good morning Max,

Target acquisition is not determined by vehicle skin.

Current ordnance can stop a golf cart and also the world's main battle tanks.

Even in WWII, a 105mm howitzer with a HEAT round could stop tanks.

I don't have a poster for current British military vehicles but I'm not in England. Here's what the US uses currently.

    b36757eae8ae33a56355548e50944dff.jpg

You might want to notice those bottom rows of land use vehicles. For most of the worlds Infantry units there vehicle of choice is still only lightly armored or completely unarmored. It's the LPC's "Leather Personnel Carriers". Known commonly to civilians as "boots". LOL! I have 1000's of miles of use in them. LOL!

Honestly if you live in or very near a big city no 4 or more wheeled vehickle will get you out of town unless you are leading the way. In short order the roads will be blocked and then the ditches will be blocked as people desperate to leave try to do whatever they can to get OUT. MAYBE a motorcyccle will be able to get through IF someone doesn't take you down and take it away from you. I saw this happen as far as the road being totally blocked in the last two hurricanes that called for evacuation of Galveston. The idiots in Houston blocked the roads and they didn't even need to evacuate. They were trapped there in their cars for several days. Bumper to bumper for 114 miles of blocked road. They just sat there idling until they ran out of gas.

If you are going to run you need to make sure that you are the first ones out of town. On top of the traffic blockage you can expect to face blocked roads if you are part of the crowd. I have seen this too durning a hurricane. The roads were blocked by the local sherif and then only a few cars at a time allowed to pass THROUGH town. Small towns can be overwhelmed and once it happens to them they prevent it in the future.

I don't live in a big city, edge of a town. If I had to bug out its more than likely I'd go in the camper. I got the disco to haul me and kit on winter camping/mountain walking trips but lockdown has meant zero trips this year, things will be a lot better next year though.

Leaving the nest is the last thing I'd want to do, can't really think of why I'd have to go; I can't see any major social unrest on the radar. Also, remember just how small the UK is compared to the USA, there ain't anywhere to run away to.

From GB, how far would you have to paddle to get to a livable zone? I was figuring Africa as I'm not sure why any Brit would head to Europe if you had to leave home. Would Spain be doable (survivable)? I've only been to Turkey and Israel in that part of the world so I have no first hand experience in Europe.

Don't bust his bubble it is just that attitude that will allow the survivors to slip out of town and survive rather that have to fight every step of the way and then fight for the limited resources. The big cities will be morgues for those that couldn't see the fire before it burned them up.

Lot of empty space in Europe, the UK is the country full to bursting. Property in Portugal, Spain, Italy and France is drastically cheaper than the UK. One of the reasons I will retire to Spain is the space/land/property size I can get cheaply over there (and the food/wine/people/traditions etc). Spain would be very survivable IMO.

you couldnt be more wrong about space in the UK, sure the cities are full to bursting, more than 80% of the UK population live and work in cities, the first settlements were on the coast and the mouth of rivers, it wasnt safe to go inland so everything went by water hence where the settlements were located.
the big cities and the large urban sprawls are mostly defined by the Capital, the Midlands and the once thriving Industrial North, as you move away from these areas the towns and settlements get smaller and smaller as you enter the rural environment.
The UK in general IS an expensive place to buy property that is true but Europe is only cheaper because most people have abandoned the rural towns and villages to move to the cities to find work . the problem down here is second home and holiday home owners pushing up the prices so people on local wages cannot afford to buy and have to move elsewhere, that is very true in a place like Cornwall which is predominately a tourist economy, go to the North of England and there is plenty of cheaper property-or so I am told- if anyone wants to live there that is.

Still just a small lump of rock with @70m people on it. Unless you in the north of Scotland your never more than a a couple of miles of an inhabited home, there is no wilderness teaming with game to live on etc, far more space over the channel.

Your right about people moving out of rural areas in Europe keeping prices down but thats not the only reason. Parts of France and Germany house prices were set by the local authority. You could buy a house for 10k, spend 10k on it but if the Lord Mayor said it worth only 15k you would be 5k out of pocket if you sold. Another factor is how you mortgage a property over there, the banks have never been as keen as UK banks and building societies to loan out money easily which in turn increases demand and drives prices up; but the main reason is space, they are bigger countries than the UK.

I feel sorry for people trying to buy a first home these days on average wages :(

The rain in Spain is plainly in the pain of the debt it can't sustain.

    https://commodity.com/data/spain/debt-clock/

"Facts About Spain’s National Debt What facts should you know about Spain’s national debt?

    > "You could wrap $1 bills around the Earth 6,141 times with the debt amount.

    > "If you lay $1 bills on top of each other they would make a pile 172,278 km, or 107,049 miles high.

    > "That's equivalent to 0.45 trips to the Moon."

It's pretty bad when a socialist propaganda machine voices concern about European debt.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/17/business/europe-pandemic-debt.html

"Europe’s Pandemic Debt Is Dizzying. Who Will Pay?

"Pandemic aid has cushioned workers and businesses from a severe recession. But as governments face trillions in debt, there’s no rush to rein it in."

No one is going to pay ... except those who hold fiat currency ... all unbacked currencies are going to hyperinflate away into a vapors of nothingness. Spain's unemployment is over 13%; when the economies of Europe involute, that number will go through the roof. After the Spanish economic downturn of 2008 through 2014, Spain tried to get some economic control going on, now they are back to pretending money into existence via insane borrowing. I think that in Europe, governments should simply have printing presses every 100 meters down streets so that fresh "money" can be handed out. Why not?!

Where anyone would like to run, there are already people there who claim it as their own. Acceptance will be in profoundly short supply.

The unclaimed places are harsh, very harsh. That's why no one lives there.

Canada, maybe Argentina (Patagonia perchance?); maybe in such places as those one might found a homestead.

Aussie outback? Hmmm ... No. One day the Chinese will own it. The Aussies will not be able to protect themselves from greater Asia and its unlimited billions of population.

There's always Siberia. It's beautiful. Gets a bit chilly.

depends where you are, Devon is a mostly rural and agricultural county once you get away from the coasts and go inland, there are some places I know that are so isolated they dont see anyone for months, except the postie.
there is game here but you need to know where to look, they arent going to just pop up and say hello!

As I said, no signs of real social unrest, certainly in the UK, the USA has potential for a lot of unrest but hopefully Trump will be taken out of the picture with all the trials he faces, fraud, rape that sort of thing so things will improve over the pond I'm sure. I did read that his wife has been advised to get the divorce in motion now while he still has enough money left to pay her settlement.

So your dreams of a total collapse of society have not come to fruition thankfully :) Holiday booking are up 500% I read somewhere, so brits will be to busy getting pissed up in the sunshine to take to the streets.

You'll have had your jab now Lonewolf, hope it went smoothly.
