What must one do if trapped in their vehicle during a riot?! Unfortunately, this is no rarity, especially in the USA. When the SHTF, such incidents will become common. At page bottom, I've gathered a half-dozen links or so.

Does one go out expecting to run into chaos? Heavens no! But now you are in the middle of it; worse, you have family with you.

In many states of the United States, handgun permits are "must issue". This means if you apply, pass background checks, have training, and pass a test, a weapons carry permit must be issued to you. Some states do not have this or the police chief or sheriff can simply refuse to issue permits based on his/her personal beliefs / whims.

Defense with firearms is the best option were you to be surrounded in a non-movable vehicle; second, one can use their car as a battering ram. But what if you get trapped without a firearm? What if your car is in fixed position in a traffic jam or pileup? Some ideas have come to me when pondering this, however I'm more interested in what others have to say. I once was living in a in a city wherein somewhat minor rioting occurred and several families were trapped in their cars when rioters descended upon them, busted out their windows, and assaulted them. At that time and in that state, I had no carry permit (this was a squeaky clean non-violent place to live ... I thought). Short story, this assault could have happened to us = too close for comfort.

Here are some links. Maybe one or two of these examples will generate one or two useful ideas.

It seems risky to stay inside a vehicle during rioting. You could be stoned or the vehicle set ablaze as is common in such situations. I would drive to the nearest parking space and try to mingle with the crowds as I calculate how to extricate myself from the situation.

When away from home I always have a firearm on my person or in the vehicle. Also as a practice I am constantly scanning for outs, and never in stopped traffic do you pull so close to the vehicle in front you that you don't have an out either left of right. If I find myself with a mob of rioters descending upon me, I will use firearm to warn or fight them off as I make my escape, do not leave your vehicle and you must be prepared to proceed forward regardless of who is blocking your path and get out of there as quickly as you can.

Found a couple of interesting articles

Think about being trapped in a truck and facing a beat-down like Reginald Denny took -- it was a miracle that he survived. He had to receive a lot of therapy to come back from the brain damage he suffered. As a trucker, which would you rather have a pistol-grip shotgun or a handgun with you? Yes, both! Let's talk about extreme short-range shotgun shooting.

It is difficult to find videos on the topic of skipping buckshot off hard surfaces into attackers. Here's one I found using hard ground as the ricochet surface. I couldn't find a video of skipping birdshot or buckshot off asphalt or concrete. When shot is skipped off a hard ground surface, the pattern really opens up. Too, you injure the legs of many attackers, hopefully bringing them down and destroying the motivation of those uninjured or injured only in a minor way (not crippled).

I've posted shot patterning using a smooth bore vs. a rifled bore shotgun. A smooth-bore gives a tighter pattern and a rifled barrel produces a doughnut pattern (toroid, little if any shot in the center of the pattern). If one is at VERY short range, five paces, one may wish the greater spread and sacrifice pellet strikes in the center. The goal, after all, is to get the widest pattern possible. At "across the room" distances, a shotgun pattern may only be 3" to 6" in width. Maybe you want hits into the face and groin of the attacker. In one-second firing -- and that may be the maximum time you have to "aim" -- you need some lead into the aggressor and wider is better.

In the above video, these men recommend birdshot for home defense. Vehicle defense presents an even shorter shooting distance. At "across the room" / "here to there" distances, a tight pattern of birdshot can prove effective. There are however many shooting wherein birdshot did NOT EVEN BEGIN TO STOP THE FELON. Understand that rioters and criminals have usually been drinking AND very possibly numb from a salad of drugs -- let's face it, to them, a riot is a party. I've read about a felon taking three loads of buckshot (one load to the thoracic area) plus a .38 Special round (to the pelvis) and then running from the room. Drug bust teams are today using shotgun slugs plus some use SMALLER buckshot. Why smaller buckshot?! Because there are far more pellets and even small buckshot drives deep. Some police agencies use #1, #2, and even the .24" #4 buckshot (note that there is #2 and #4 buckshot and #2 and #4 birdshot; birdshot is smaller than a BB and buckshot is all larger, much larger, than a BB).

Rioting in the UK is a city activity and I have not been near or in a city for over 10 years (and that was only a flying visit to collect something, in and out again fast).

There are a few good points already mentioned here.
Stay out of anything bigger than a medium size town.
Situational awareness, you need to be able to judge the emotion of a gathering, is it going to turn into a riot? Crowd psychology, how many people in a given area? The more people the more energy, emotion and peer pressure to do something.
You really have to see it coming and react before you are actually surrounded by the riot. I never been trapped in a riot while in a vehicle but I have come very close to them.
Riots are common in SA, how many times driving home in the dark and you round a corner and there they are 50 feet in front of you, burning tires and throwing bricks. Let me tell you, you learn to reverse at speed, do U turns as fast as possible lol
If you are stuck in traffic or a pile up, riots are noisy affairs, you will see and hear them coming a way off. Just abandon your vehicle and get out the area as fast as possible, don't assume they will ignore you.
These are just my opinions based off the riots in Africa I have been uncomfortably close too. Maybe different tactics are required in the US.

I am seldom in urban areas anymore. If I was and happened to be surrounded by rioters and they become violent toward me and mine. A vehicle is an extremely large weapon and when operated accordingly will remove any number of "rioters" from your direction of egress. When the rioters realize what is coming at them, they will scatter. If something caught in my wheel wells so that motion was no longer possible, I would then with either my sidearm or truck gun exit the vehicle (with family) and start moving to a safe zone. Aggression from the rioters would be meet with the force/firepower needed to secure my family's safety. A rock striking your head can kill you and you can't protect yourself or your family if your unconscious or dead. Survive the incident and deal with legalities latter.

there is a reason why I dont drive on motorways much, apart from being over an hours drive from the end of the only one in the South West I dont need to, the problem with motorways is that if there is a hold up for whatever reason unless you are lucky enough to be near an off ramp you cannot get off it and you cannot reverse or get onto the other carriageway(crash barriers!) I have know people who were stuck for 8 hours because of a RTA traffic accident, at least on our rural minor roads I can always turn around and find another route.
apparently some "protestors" i.e. Rioters were stopped from walking and marching onto a motorway from Bristol at the weekend by the Police- walking and cycling on a motorway is banned in the UK, we can only imagine what carnage would have occurred if they had been successful.
