I don't know if you guys have it on your E mail but I do . Televisions according to the article have cameras and microphones in them so they can watch you and anyone else in front of the screen even with it turned off . Microphones also so they can listen to what you think about that a-- hole politician and any threats you might make . The feds can tap into your home to monitor you . That perverted fed. can watch you or your daughter or your spouce walking around nacked . Check your e mail for this article , as I think it came through this forum . What are your thoughts on this ?

This makes me think of something that the guy that had himself casterated and changed his name to Chelsey said . When he was working as a fed , his fellow workers would tap in and watch nacked women for entertainment . I don't think he was in to nacked women .

Ah, the advantage of antenna's. No cable, satellites, just plain one way reception. Plus, anybody watching me walk around "nacked" will be filing for PTSD benefits.

There are so many things in most people's homes and lives that can be tapped into these days. Televisions are just another one. Then there are things like Alexa. And smart homes. Connected cars.

There was a bit of a scandal in Canada early last year because people put security cameras inside their homes which they control through the internet via their smart phones. Well some website on the other side of the world was allowing anyone and everyone to just watch what was happening inside all these private homes.

Well said perverted feds will have to struggle to watch me a little more. Don't own a television. Or Alexa, or connected car, or smart home, or inside cameras. Don't even leave the laptop out or connected.

I think you shouldn't believe things you read in random E-mails from sources you don't know. I don't even open them. It's too easy to get a virus.

The IoT, AI and "smart" stuff is going to be an ever increasing appearance as we move forward into this the 21st century I'm afraid. It's really going to depend on the consumer and their attitude (for lack of the right word now) on it all. It started with the "smart" phone which in fact created the human drone and it's moving into your house.

Now the thing with "smart" TVs is that it's the dumb consumer that actually established the WiFi connection with their router/modem in the TV in the first place that will give the TV Internet access. Now who's dumb? If I want to stream anything my Blu-ray player has all the Apps plus some to do all that without a stupid smart TV. Plus, I have a Roku that has even more crap in that thing.

If you have no choice in getting a smart TV since one day I'm sure all TVs whether LED or holographic (yes, that's coming) will have a connection to the Internet, just don't allow it. You have to be smarter than the smart stuff, and 'it's a brave new world out there. At least it better be.'

I just have to put here that people praised Edward Snowdon and hate the NSA for stupid reasons beyond stupid reasons. Yet the consumer has no idea, not one little iota of an idea at how intrusive companies and marketing are. Companies do use psychology. How do you think those commercials stick in your little noggin? Companies employ marketing companies for R&D big time and by in large all that wonderful telemetry from your smartphone or computer is used to create a picture of YOU and your personal consuming portfolio so they can sell more and more crap for you. But the NSA? They just don't have an analyst sitting there at their desk listening to your phone conversation about how your 80 year old mother fell in the nursing home and broke her hip. They don't do that. They have WAAAAY too much data to waste their time on such garbage. They're more concerned about shit head in Iran or Venezuela talking about God only knows what through terrestrial or Sat communications. Did you know that a major portion of Info. for the President's daily intelligence briefings come from the NSA? Not the CIA, not the DIA, the NSA. I've been reading a book called the Secret Sentry that talks about the NSA from World War II forward and its setbacks and I can't even imagine the massive setback the agency suffered as a result of traitor Snowden telling everything under the sun to Russia and in turn the Chinese, the Pakistanis, etc. He sold you and I out and as a consequence our adversaries can take preventive measures so we aren't a step ahead anymore.

Anyways, companies know more about you via "smart" devices then a damn government agency, believe me. Many of you may know this already if you're not as computer savvy as I am and are inundated with targeted Ads. "Oh, you bought this product, well here's a product you may be interested in." Creepy, isn't?

BTW, it's not just a company or what ever that can see you through a smart TV. They can easily be hacked and Shodan knows all.... Look up shodan.

Yes it's very creepy. And it goes beyond just targeting you. They go for the people in close proximity to you. For example if I look up a product..like a new chainsaw or something..suddenly my husband is getting adverts for new chainsaws when he hasn't been looking at all.

It's like carrying your stalker around in your pocket. And because we don't have almost any other devices everything goes through our smartphones.. which won't even let me look up a weather forecast if I don't let it know my exact location.

Smartphones are a marketer's wet dream come true and they are very hard to control. With my computer's I have a very tight ship. With a phone I just limit what Apps I install (only Apps I need), use an App that tells me what other Apps can do wit h the camera, GPS, Mic, etc and use the DuckDuckGo browser. It's by no means perfect, but better than nothing.

In your case, you might want to try the DuckDuckGo browser for Internet browsing and set its options to dump data on browser exit. Which is another thing. I think a lot of people don't close their Apps. They just minimize them. You want to fully close the App and this will help save on battery power. If you use Facebook, that App right there is a major battery drain.

Many people use the DuckDuckGo search engine in lieu of Google. But on my computers I mostly use Swisscows.

    Good morning F22,

Is it possible / probable that those Silicone companies are GSE's - Government - Sponsored Enterprises ?

    Having mentioned E. Snowden; ...

No one enters HK without the HK Government knowing about it. Scheduled airline service is easy to monitor. If he was transferred at sea to a fishing boat and landing at Aberdeen, HK, a high school police cadet would monitor the event. A 20 year old police officer would. HK knows.

More to all this then renting a flop house hotel room (makes D.C. hotels appear modest priced by Tom Bodett) in HK and then enroute to Moscow.

Not sure. I've read that Microsoft was in bed with the NSA and Bitlocker does have a backdoor. It's why I use a third-party encryption solution for all my computers.

Now China has been known to GSE their chips and the NSA among other companies had servers with those Chinese made chips.

"The Police Are Requesting Data from People’s Smart Speakers at an Alarming Rate"

    https://www.theorganicprepper.com/police-smart-speaker-data/

Something else to consider doing: Turn the volume all the way down to zero on your computers' microphones. I cover the camera len's on my computers.

When attending online meetings (using ZOOM or whichever), re-enable your microphones and expose the computer's vid. eye. I put a physical postie note on the outside of a computer with its mic. volume turned to zero. Before an online work meeting, I re-enable the mic.s using the control panel access.

Hackers of any ilk can embed listening s/w bugs onto your computers. I don't want them listening to me cursing at my computer, passing gas, or talking to my family.

Big Brother hates people who prep. Big gov. wants people to be dependent so that they may be owned. "Whoever protects you, owns you." People who are independent are a threat. Sacred Liberty is a threat to the elitist controllers -- they loathe Liberty, even the concept of freedom. The people must possess the power to physically shut down the government, else their votes mean nothing. High powered rifles with FMJ ammo = electric transformer killers. Civil war guerrilla fighters take out electric substations -- bullets and bulldozers (jump before your bulldozer goes through the fence, ha-ha-ha!). Be as independent as you can be.

I just don't care. As you can tell I'm not at all shy about expressing myself. I know as a fact that I have been looked at more than once. Hell if I worked for the government I would have given me more than just a look. I have been an outspoken member of a militia when I was younger and stupid. I was raised in a place that was drug-infested and most of the people that I grew up with spent a lot of time in jail. I have been known to associate with some pretty nefarious people and had friends that were connected on a national level to organized crime.

All that I admit but I also was on the board of directors of my church, was a youth counselor and despite everything, I have spent only one partial night in jail for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. No shame I still smoke a joint every once in a while. It always pissed me off that they liked to treat me like some sort of hardened criminal whether I was hanging with old friends of was with a youth group from the church. I wasn't stupid. I did lots of stupid things but was smart and never got caught except for that one time and that wasn't my fault.

IF I was going to do anything now I would not even talk around someone with a cell phone or in the room with a computer. I watched too many of my old friends go to jail because one of their "friends" got caught and ended up setting up a bunch of their "Friends" for things that they had been caught doing. Most of the people that I dealt with in the Militia were a different level of a person. You only crossed them ONE TIME. We didn't normally break any laws and were not a pack of thugs. We were just determined about preparing for what at that point in time looked like a possible civil war and race war.

as far as I am concerned in the here and now I'm not breaking any laws I am merely expressing an opinion, I prepare for a time when there will be no rule of law and any government will be no larger than a city council and confined to a small area of land , and anything outside of that is "bandit country".

Have an olde flip phone ....no land line...no camera in my flip phone..
My flip phone.... I remove the battery when I decide and carry spare batteries with me.

Like many here the cameras on my lap tops are taped over. When I am not on this laptop the cable connection and power line are disconnected. The battery has been removed from this laptop since I got it.

I got rid of my cable Television and land line....

Agree with lonewolf...the television programming is horrible....and I finally got rid of it.

In the future, if not already, this monitoring equipment will be built into your refrigerators....stoves...washing machines et al....as well as your automobiles.

I have olde vehicles and try to keep them going. No hurry to come up to date in a new vehicle. Do not want a vehicle with GPS Built into it...or built in cell ph0ne.
I hate car payments...hell...I hate to have payments at all.

If I have to get a newer car with GPS in it..I will learn how to disconnect it.
There are people out here who know how this is done..and will teach you ....even underground books published on it.

Years ago..I used to have an underground collection of a publication called "Secret CB" and these publications told you how to modify your CB radios to go where they were designed not to go...more than 40 channels.
Today My rigs are far beyond that..but in those days it was interesting the information you could get in certain circles.

This kind of thing is to what Texdanm and Olde Geezer are describing ...people who operate independently of the crowds...

This is not encouraged by government/governments more interested in 'herding" people.

I am also aware that some of this will be built into the newer generation of ham radios...particularly walkie talkies..

I keep telling some of you about "Herding." Well there you have it.

The stores often ask me if I want to use their store card for discounts...and I often tell them no..not interested...I pay cash. If I want that information out there I will write a check.

Or they insert the store card for that cash register....or someone lets me use their card....

I do not want my cash purchases tied to my name and address if I pay cash. It is no ones business..but mine.

This is the intended purpose of these store cards like at Sam's or BJ's ..to tie your purchase into an address and a name...even if you pay cash..no privacy.

    Grocery store cards as well....

Mayhap now you understand why the rush to go cashless..to tie everything into a name and address...for "Herding" purposes.

It is no one's business what or how much you buy....as long as you pay for it.

Something some of you may find interesting . A few days ago I was approached by an individual whom came to my retreat an informed me that I was on the Governments watch list . I knew that they were watching me years back but thought that had seized years ago . I consider it an honor , that at age 72 the communist still fear me and think I am someone they need to watch . Some of the information that was on my file - my address and my E mail . They seemed especially affixed on my military history . Also my Alamo was scoped out giving the structures dimensions , I suppose filed for any government attack . Also a personnel file of people the government thought might know me . What I found most interesting about the personnel file was they knew of a lady that occasionally pays us a visit that travels several hundred miles to get here . They knew here name and probably address . I have never had a face book account or been on it but do know I am sometimes posted about by others . -- Perhaps the file presented to me was bull crap , but do like to think the government fears me that much .

I think it depends on how politically active a person is, do they belong to a trade union?, are they a member of a political party? are they a member of a protest group or some such?
a member of a discussion group which is principally what this forum is, talking about theoretical future possible events is not breaking any laws.

So too and now the Ford class aircraft carriers.

You get born, birth is registered, your in the system, live with it.

I'd love to know where the hundreds of thousands of workers are going to come from to track all these 'tracked' people lol

As you know I like technology, I also make sure I know how to turn it off though. Some home tech is useful, doorbell bell goes and my phone rings and I can see and talk to whoever is there. My central heating is 'smart' and I can turn it on/off/up/down from phone. GPS in the car is handy when travelling and I've installed a hidden tracker in case the vehicle is stolen. I've got Alexa Dots all in lounge, kitchen and bedroom which are great for playing music in the background. My main TV has a degree of voice control if I can't be bothered to pick up a remote. Can I live without all that? Yes, absolutely but I'll use it until such time as I think it un-safe then it gets turned off.

I don't like this level of fear some people have, its verging (if not at) clinical level paranoia which is often fed by shite on social media spewed out by some oddball who didn't get enough love as a child or something.

    LOL LOL LOL Max...

From a 3.5 Trillion plus government budget...and that is only the beginning of the budget increases.

    Buckle up.

Oh...and agree...know how to turn it off....verily agree. And yes...GPS is wonderful...but also know how to read a map...and do a manual overide..if needed.

I like GPS but know to keep several Rand McNally book maps of the USA in the storage place behind the seats of my car.

Do not become totally dependent on the technology....to where one needs constant breast feeding via high tech.

A section of my long wire HF loop antenna went down. I need to get off my donkey and repair it...but have several G5RV dipoles I can quickly put up in an emergency if needed.

I verily like my 500 foot wire HF Loop antenna.

    Thinking on this one Max...

    Max....

The Average American out here lives a television and or movie life and defines themselves often by the products they consume or the movies and television they watch.

I am very often quick to note how many people ....when asked a question requiring deep thought and or consideration...refer to a movie they have watched or a television program.

This kind of media is doing their thinking for them.

I do not watch sports....not interested in these gods or demi gods as an example by which to mold my life...nor Hollywood celebrities.

I do not care to live second hand through these demi gods...not for me.

But I do note this in the lives of many many of my fellow Americans.

I do not think many Americans know when to be afraid or concerned with such heavy indoctrination via such a medium infecting their lives and thinking abilities....their children and grandchildren as well.

But that is just me....neither you or the other members here have to buy into what I am describing here

To many Americans television and movies are their drug of choice..and they are heavily sedated and know it not.

    Amuse......Amusement...

    A....Without

    Muse......Thinking..

    Without thinking...Amuse Amusement..

Something fed to us to prevent thinking...

When I worked for a big international tech enterprise, we knew that we were being listened-to. So in all of our communications we would insert names of projects that would set off a Soviet trigger to monitor that communication. Thing was that 99.44% of the comm was junk. Overload your enemies. If they are listening, shovel them mountains of sh##.

Western Governments are tossing out tanker loads of misinformation to keep the sheeple in line. OK, so that can work both ways. Find out who kisses Big Brother's butt, then implicate those toadies as being part of some massive "right wing conspiracy". For starters, keep track of those people who put out electioneering signs for socialist candidates. These are your local butt-kissers. When it hits the fan, these people will be your enemies.

When it hits the fan, a whole lot of ex-patriots are going to be stuck in countries where they will become pariahs. We must daily put up with arrogant, self-assured, grasshoppers. It's a pain. Irritates the dickens out'a me also. However, I know what is going to become of them ... and it isn't pretty. History informs that when things go sideways, you don't want to be where you are an outsider.

Some SHTF events are predictable and come on at a drawn-out pace. One may be able to prep for such nasty situations; we try. Other SHTF events may very well be outside the realm of predictability and happen "out of the blue". These nasty hellish events hit society like a sledge-hammer. In one of the latter scenarios, one is where he is and has what he has -- too bad, so sad.

In today's world, some countries absolutely love it when people from other countries come in and enrich the local economy. However, when things go sideways and these people cease to serve any purpose / are no longer a "cash crop" (retirement funds and investment funds will grind to an absolute halt post-SHTF), the locals will want them gone, gone, gone.

Anything connected thru the web is a listening device, either for the owner or the government. You may not need to fear todays government but you don't know about tomorrows government. I don't use GPS, as I have no need for it. I don't use smart phones, again no need for it. I do use a laptop, with multiple VPN's and with no delusion that what I do on the internet is not monitored. I don't need or want fancy electronic gadgets. If I want to see who is at my door, I can get off my butt and go look. My laptop and flip phone have removable batteries, so I can actually disable them, not just turn them off. Is this living in fear, not for me, it is just common sense and self reliance. I carry auto insurance, so I don't need to install a tracking device in my vehicle. I did not enable the GPS in my vehicle, don't need it, but I am willing to bet the government can track the location of my vehicle if they so choose. I don't need or want any electronic device to show me the way.

Have flip-phone. Got one vehicle with no GPS. If you think anyone may wish to track you, duct-tape your phone under some 18-wheeler and thus send it down some interstate you mean to avoid, yourself. Give Big Brother something to track ... far, far away in some other state. Or with a non-trackable vehicle go to that state ... on side roads. Scout the dozens of side roads and alternate side-roads to get to any bug-out location. Mexican drug gangs are starting to do this here in America -- picking tiny-towns as distribution hubs. They use locals with a drug habit to be their operatives. Cities used to be places where the nefarious could hide, but that is becoming harder and harder to do what with all the cameras and facial recognition software. The cartel crews sometimes mix in with the Mexican agricultural workers, or are mistaken for migrant aggies. Just drive a pickup truck.

"Video: Australians Being Mandated To Provide Police With Geo-Trackable Selfies To Prove They’re Quarantining"

“If they don’t answer within the five minutes that’s when health ministers come knocking.”

    https://summit.news/2021/10/06/vide...ackable-selfies-to-prove-theyre-quarantining/

"In a move that again highlights how far toward a complete tyranny Australia has become in the wake of COVID, citizens are being mandated to provide geo-trackable selfies to police to prove they are staying at home.

"A report from 9 News in Australia details how people in Victoria are now required to respond to the authorities within 5 minutes of them randomly calling by sending a selfie of themselves at home. If they fail to respond, health goons are sent to their address to dish out punishments.

"The reporter notes 'Today the call has gone out to everyone in home quarantine in Victoria to take part in a pilot program. And what that means is they will receive random phone calls and they will have to answer within five minutes with a selfie sent to an app which will then geo-track where that person is and to make sure they are who they say they are as well.'

"Reuters notes that 'Under the system being trialled, people respond to random check-in requests by taking a ‘selfie’ at their designated home quarantine address. If the software, which also collects location data, does not verify the image against a 'facial signature', police may follow up with a visit to the location to confirm the person’s whereabouts.'”

The US seperated itself from English rule a long long time ago while most of their previous territories seemed to get along with them better. The US was most often settled by people that were not big in being bossed around by abentee overloads.

We are a pugnatious lot and that has its good and bad points. Even INSIDE the US there are, have been and always will be a certain friction between the individual people and states and the FEDERAL governement. We recognised a long time ago that people that live different lives in different places need slightly different handling. One size fits all never describes people when describing their government.

The problems start as soon as people in on place start trying to FORCE their ways on people in other places. Even today there is in the US a certain friction between the small densly populated states and the much larger less urban places. People that like to live crammed together in tight places are just going to have different needs and views than people that even in their urban areas still have yards and property. I can't imagine living in an appartment building. For almost all of my adult life I have measured my yard in acres.

You missed the bit where I said I can live without technology and I don't expect a Luddite attitude on a prepping forum whose ideology is based on being prepared and being flexible in response to changing situations...you ain't bending mate LOL (I missed the FB problems, I only use a couple of non prep relating groups there and visit once or twice a week).

Chris: "I will not get a phone in which I cannot remove or change out the battery at my discretion." I'm not that bothered about having a replaceable battery on my day to day phone, mine (Galaxy S21 Ultra) is fixed battery but I have a couple of other older smart phones I can use when out camping/climbing and they have removable batteries; the main reason for this is its easier to slip a spare battery in a ziplock than it is a power bank. I agree 100% about learning to use a map and compass and I'd also suggest learning some night nav skills as well, they can be a life saver at times. I also agree pretty much on removable batteries on laptops, not for security (wrap your lappy or phone in foil if worried) but because batteries are often the first thing to fail and its a bitch to have to strip a phone or lappy to replace a battery. I like the older Thinkpads, clip in batteries, covers on ram and harddrive, solid build, reliable etc. I'm using an old i5 Thinkpad to run Flrig and JTDX, about 7 years old but still a good machine and you can pick them up used for £100 (PS, passed my advanced ham test, got a new call sign and can operate in Spain now ).

UK has the best mapping system in the world with Ordnance Survey. Certainly since the 1800s brits have produced fantastic maps, not just the UK but we mapped India and the Himalayas (all military uses of course). That said even OS have gone digital, while you can buy traditional paper maps they are all available in digital form.

Max you seem to have ignored the fact that a prepper needs to be self reliant, relying on technology is not being self reliant, either now or post collapse, I know you said you could live without it but even your camping trips seem to be tech heavy .

We all use technology LW, your using it here talking to the group. The discovery/invention of using a rock as a weapon, the wooden club and the stone axe ensured the survival of the human race and each a quantum leap in technology at the time. This is what we do as humans, we invent, develop, improvise and adapt...its why we're top of the food chain.

Survival is ALL about technology at some level or another whether its the mechanics behind the design of a strong shelter or making a clay pot to cook in...its all technology.

Now, you don't like technology and thats up to you but read what other preppers think and plan and you'll find modern tech high up the list of their needs, solar power, hydro power, radio and digital comms, refridgeration et al, the list goes on so really you need to stop looking down on other people who don't want to live like a caveman.

When my dad started me and my brother camping in the hills we had a cotton tent, ex army feather sleeping bags, a gas stove in summer and primus stove in winter, we cooked in army mess tins and drank from enamel mugs, light came from a torch/candles and we had a little transistor radio. Our waterpoofs were coated nylon anoraks and trousers and you got wet from condensation. Technology now means that my clothes are waterproof, my sleeping bag is lighter and warmer, my tent weighs a kilo (not ten kilo) my pans have heat exchanger on the bottom which cuts down fuel consumption by a third, my stove burns any fuel, lights are LED and my radio/music is on my phone.....do you have issues with that or should I go bag to hauling a 25Kg back pack getting wet and sleeping cold or should I be sensible and use the technology available to me?

You stick to what works for you and cut down on decrying other peoples way of doing what works for them please.

thats fine Max but post collapse we need to use what we can find to get to a point where we can live without it when it no longer functions.
this idea that we all have to live like cavemen post collapse is for people who havent studied or researched alternative lifestyles, most of whom will have a hard time surviving without their technology.

Post major collapse useable/salvageable technology will be available long after you pop you clogs so don't worry about it.

If a collapse happened, the big one, you won't be walking round Dartmoor in a monk's habit like some survivalist Obi Wan Kenobi living off the fruits of nature, you'll be deep in the mire with other survivors and the ones that use technology that survived to help create a survival buffer zone will last longer than the Lone Wolf.

You'll hate the idea of some sort of community living/support that is the reality you and for that matter all of us will have to live with. There are examples of lone survivors but I can't think of one that survived completely alone and unsupported in some way or another; those that did survive like Hiroo Onoda (30 years in the jungle) only survived because they were thieves, they raided communities for food and bits and pieces to help keep them going. They were not true survivalists they were thieves and or parasites living off the efforts of others and I don't want to earn those tags post fall, I will contribute and not just take.

You follow your path and I'll follow mine so lets respect the routes we've chosen even if its not a road you or I would follow and share.

You have no respect for preppers, therefore expect no respect from them. And the "banjo music" thing is pure bigotry. You accuse other people of bigotry, yet apparently do not own a mirror. Here in America, I've spent my life being put down for having a Southern accent, for having been raised in the sticks.

thats the problem with techno buffs, they think technology will be around for ever post collapse but it wont, technology is the first thing to collapse in a catastrophe.
at the end of the day it will be down to who can put food on the table, nothing else matters.
"community" is for those who cant to rely on those who can.
Dartmoor is a barren rock strewn peat bog , the only thing it grows is Gorse , as a lot of people have found out to their peril, nobody will be living there, not in their right minds anyway.

Improvement in technology is great, until it is not. Improvement in clothing and camping tents outstanding. Multi fuel stoves convenient but limited to fuel supply. GPS nice to have but physical maps are better. Modern day firearms are superior to black powder firearms until smokeless powder runs out. Almost all modern day material and equipment are superior to past models, until the support infrastructure is nonexistent. Modern camping stove is next to worthless without it's processed fuel. GPS devices are useless without electricity. Cell phones are paper weights without working cell towers. Just about any idiot can use google maps but how many can actually use topographical maps? How many people actual have printed topo maps? Lone wolf vs starting a community is a crap shoot at best. Family unit will be the most likely survivable unit post wrol. The shtf event will play a major role in what and whom is left after it hits the fan. A fast grid down event and there might be a lot of salvageable material abandoned. A slow economical collapse and there will be very little usable material left. There will be people that did not prepare and they will not go willingly into that good night. They will steal, connive and kill to get other people's supplies. In the early days of a shtf event, I seriously doubt that unknow people will be welcomed into any group or community. I know I certainly would not welcome a stranger into my family group, nor would I jeopardize my family group by joining into an unknown group. Do I currently enjoy my modern day creature comforts, you bet. Do I plan to live without them, you bet. I save my air rifle pellet tins to make candles and fire starters. I have a lot of rechargeable batteries of every size imageable but I also keep candles. It is okay to enjoy modern day life and equipment but essential to have more primitive tools, knowledge, and experience on how to exist without those modern items. The best way to determine if you can survive in a primitive (I call it a buckskin world) environment, is go a minimum of a full week without any power or travel and test out your readiness. That mean no camping stove, unless it burns wood you have on hand. No sewer, water, electrical or refrigerated items. Can you dig your own latrine? Do you have your own water source and the ability to purify your water? These are the real prepping questions to answer. There is no reason to debate / defend the value of modern equipment, when it will become useless without a modern support infrastructure. When the petrol runs out, do you want a free Mercedes or a horse drawn cart? Sheeple will always pick the Mercedes, preppers will always pick the horse drawn cart.

Oh by the way, y'know what makes great candle containers? The little cans used for pineapple juice; they're 6 fl. oz. / 177 ml. I drink gallons of orange juice, but love pineapples and pineapple juice also. I've made a bunch of candles in these things. When the wax is used up, drop in a new wick, fill with paraffin, and poof!, you've got a new candle. If you put in a thick wick, you can keep dropping-in new wax due to the wick lasting so long. Same is true if you use wood wicks.

There is a well known (in sailing circles) book about voyaging on a minimal budget. The lady that wrote it talked a lot about technology and how it was always good to have a traditional backup. I remember the passage about using a sextant where she outlined how useful GPS can be but, as a back up one still needed to be proficient in using a sextant. She reasoned, therefore, as using a sextant takes regular practice, why not just use the sextant?

I think that view is a very sensible one. If we retain and regularly use older skills we will have insured against tech failure or power cuts without have to provision for them. Sometimes the old ways are better.

its like the old argument, which is best maps or sat nav? the problem I can see with sat nav is it cuts out when you go under a bridge, will it still work once the power grid shuts down? I dont have one in my car but the wife has it on her smart phone, of course that will go off once the cell towers shut down.

A cell phone is a multitool, the phone bit of it is not as important as its other offline capabilities like maps, music, videos, compass, games, camera, word processor, spread sheet, data base, books/manuals, GPS (until they turn the sats off) etc and all you need is a little solar charger to keep it running and subject to battery failure will last you years; modern electronics is very reliable these days and of course nothing stopping you having more than one. So when the phone towers fail you still have a powerful little tool in your pocket. Use them while you can but have your back up skills in reserve.

One of my closest friends is a Navigation Officer in the merchant navy and he said its all satnav/GPS but...there are still charts on the table and he is obliged to maintain his traditional nav skills in case the sats get switched off.

Multifuel camping stoves perform well, mine will burn liquid fuel and liquid gas but are as much use without fuel as is a box of matches without combustible materials to hand...you can't light a fire if you don't have something to burn.

Keep up to date with your old skills, use the new skills while you can, they make life easier.
