Another fella to view, 'Bushtucker man' (Major) Les Hiddens who served with the Australian forces in Vietnam then landed the job of 'food mapping' wild food in Australian for their armed forces. He had his demons and for some time has been helping forces veterans deal with theirs. A nice man and his shows though some years old covering real survival stories are still interesting and easy viewing,

Ray Mears used to have a television series here. I thought it was very good, and always enjoyed it. IMHO he has a very knowledgeable and practical approach.

I've only watched the first video so far.

Question: why do they lie in a wagon wheel formation with their heads facing inwards?

We always need great info such as this. Gonna watch them all. What I've watched so far has been informative. My dad had to drink from mud holes during WWII.

survival in a combat or war situation is different to survival in a civilian WTSHTF event, whilst some of the skills are very similar, all combat and wars will end at some point no matter which side wins the conflict, and the combatants can return to their old ways, in a TEOTWAWKI situation it will be "normal " life for the foreseeable future and may be a permanent lifestyle change.

LW, are you referring to survival or SERE as being different for civilians?

yes Dale, I thought that was what I said.
Survival for a reduced population post SHTF "could" be a permanent lifestyle, once the power grid and stocked supermarket shelves are consigned to history.

    !

Yes LW, that is what you said. I know that's wrong! Survival training is for all conditions and locations and has as much to do with mindset as skills. Survival isn't a lifestyle, it's what you have to do when things have gone wrong so that you have a life to return to. People live in harsh (by western standards) environments every day and don't consider it surviving. If you have your loved ones, a home or just people that tolerate you, that's still just living.

SERE, as it relates to the evasion, resistance and escape has no current civilian purpose in peaceful settings. That can change quickly and some of us appreciate knowing how to open locks without keys, deal with harsh legal environments evade detection of someone searching for us, etc.

I have personally been in countries that went from calling themselves free and democratic one day to marshal law and military dictators in less than 24 hours. People telling themselves it can't happen here is how the Hitler's and Pop Pots of the world come to power.

    Just my opinion.

surviving is what we will all have to do to stay alive post SHTF, failure to survive is death, simples.
however survival training as in the military sense is to get the troops back to base and fight again, but in a civilian sense it will be more of a lifestyle.
maybe we are both coming at this from different angles? I think you are coming at this from a military point of view whereas I have never served in the forces and am talking from a civilian point of view.
like I said before some of the skills of both are very similar, but military survival stops when the combat or war is over, for civilians in a post SHTF event survival will be a daily struggle maybe for the rest of our lives.

I agree and am quite sure we are looking at this from very different points. I had enough SERE training to be certified as a SERE expert/instructor for everything but blue water survival. Most of the survival training conducted by the U.S. Army is actually quite applicable to civilians and the more advanced the training, the more applicable to civilians it becomes.

Actually, survival training specifically isn't about getting back to combat. If it was, most would probably never survive. Combat/War isn't usually what civilians think of as combat. Since the Vietnam conflict most soldiers (less than 2%) have died of or been injured by gunfire. It's usually a booby trap/IED that gets you, or artillery fire, injuries or disease.

I can't adequately explain here why it is applicable. Maybe this website can explain it, where I cant. https://www.offgridweb.com/survival...analyzing-the-u-s-armys-survival-acronym/amp/
