interesting piece from the JW Rawles blog.

although I agree that 3mph seems to a comfortable walking speed I think his estimate of 20-30 miles PER DAY is excessive, this would mean walking 7-10 hours solid each day every day, that is not sustainable.
also where would someone be going?
in a post collapse world I'm never going to be walking 20-30 miles away from home/base.
the maximum would be a 4 mile radius of my location and probably more like no more than 1 or 2 miles from home, most days I wont be going anywhere, too much to do here.
    what about you? any thoughts?

I cannot see many being in good enough shape to hike out even 10 miles, with any kind of a pack out. I tend to agree with LW, I won't be doing much walking about. Remember that when it has truly hit the fan, your walks will also include weapons and ammo (firearms for us yanks - no slur intended to my southern state brothers and sisters) and knives, air guns, and bow & arrows for my friends across the pond. All the extra weight will slow most folks down and limit the distance traveled.

Our plan A - is to do like the Native Americans and go for a walk as a hunting party to some property we have that is nearly a one day hike away . Good hunting is there . Thinking of walking there as a group from our survival retreat for safety from marauder humans . Dirt roads are along most of the trip . I have a pull hand cart for bringing back the meat . On the hunting grounds is an abandoned pickup truck camper shell that could be used as a roof on a smoke house in order to make jerky from deer for preservation and decreasing the weight of the meat on our walk back to the survival retreat . I am the oldest of the group " 71 " but would not have any difficulty taking the walk and would no doubt enjoy it .

Miles per day? There's lots of factors:
    Mountainous or flat?
    Thick brush or open grassy?
Existing trail cut or you're the one cutting the trail?
Do you know this turf or is this place all new to you?
Are you in the land of friendlies or are you in Indian territory?

I've known several of Appalachian trail through-hikers. Me, I've only done sections of the Appy. I've known guys who have really pushed it and ended up with foot fractures. Appalachian trail; there are folk who work their way up to 20, even 25 miles a day, but let me tell you something, these guys are machines. If you get up to 15 miles a day in the mountains, you've accomplished a lot. I've hiked and I have hunted straight up the side of a mountain, but I was young and skinny and had the heart of an animal. Now I'm getting a beer gut and I don't drink beer. I'm turning into a worn-out old bear ... crippled old bear.

I found the following links on the web. Maybe some info in here will help. Me, I'm no ortho expert ... at all ... period. My knowledge in the musculo-skeletal realm leaves a LOT to be desired. In my studies, this is a gaping hole; so, I can't comment.

The first link below is a good one in that he talks about socks. He sez to not wear cotton socks. Man oh man, is he ever right about that one! Talk to veterans of wars in jungle areas and they'll tell you that your socks can rot off -- I knew an in-country veteran who this happened to. And cotton destroys your skin and gives you blisters. Buy the best hiking socks you can afford.

    Post SHTF
OK, here's one scenario: You and family have a base of operations. You've sealed off the road leading into your area. Vehicles leaving = convoy to get something mighty important, something you should have stocked, or something that cannot be stocked. I think THE PRIMARY reason to be off base is to walk perimeter. If you do not have a perimeter, then may God be with you.

I've had kin who had land at the head of a holler. I've hunted high-pasture with cousins. This is a place that you can actually secure. But still, I'd have me some young men to walk that ridge-line. And, I'd NEVER make enemies if at all possible. Having a feud is the last thing on Earth you want. One of my great-grandfathers was in a feud with one of his brother-in-laws. That great grand-pappy had to strap-on a hog-leg revolver just to plow his fields. That is NOT how you want to live. Making friends if at all possible is the way to go. If you ever have the opportunity (without getting your own killed) to protect your neighbor's property Post SHTF, do so! For instance, if everybody up and down a holler all pitch in together, then Peace can rule and nobody loses. Plus, this is God's Will.

My maternal pap and I hunted on land that likely belonged to others and we got by with it. But then again, people were afraid of him. I was.

Post-SHTF, watch out about venturing out.

I am waiting today for a delivery of a world war two era airplane " 1946 ". It predates electronics , so I am guessing it should survive a electrical magnetic pulse natural or man made . It will fly on car gas though I am sure that would be a poor option . My grandson will be the pilot . It will be a big thing for my tribe . about nine of us plan to be at the airport when it arrives . This opens up a lot of possibilities - business , recreational and survival . It is a 4 seater taildragger with retracting wheels . --- Update - The landing gear has to be let up and down with a hand crank as this vintage airplane doesn't have hydraulics . Also it has wooden wings . It is primitive but a real beauty . Already aircraft people are telling us the plane needs to be in air shows .

Sometimes it is necessary to xport injury casualties via aircraft.

Air evac saved one of my sons' life. Without air evac and highly trained medical staff, he would have died -- not up for discussion, 100% reality. Chest tubes bilaterally, plus fluids, plus packed RBCs saved him.

As a group of pure bloods " non - vaxxers " the airplane gives us the ability to fly over road blocks at state lines or wherever else the communist want to set up travel restrictions . Also in case of a need for evacuation to a safer area of the planet , it gives us the ability to fly over the apocalypse areas . This is a game changer for us and a big step forward in our survival preparations . --- Though years out in the planning our next goal will be for our " now "18 year old pilot with his instructor license to begin training others of our group in their quest for pilot license . Then the purchase of another airplane is on the radar .

You believe there is going to be a mass die-off, OK, just wait until until there's just a handful of people on Earth. If a real killer comes along such as Ebola, then maybe flying is a good idea.

most-if not all-diseases need a human host to spread through the population usually through the air in coughs and sneezes, or other bodily fluids, if there is only a handful of people left-unless they are all huddled together- this link is broken.
