How Many Rounds A Year

How many rounds a year not including offensive or defensive use do you reckon you will need for day to day activities? handgun, rifle and shotgun. And what will these rounds be used for?

I didn't see a designation as to this being under current living conditions or TEOTWAWKI conditions.

Currently,

approximately 100 308Win rounds for hunting large game and target practice.
" 40 300BLK rounds for deer hunting and target practice
" 100 5.56mm NATO for predator hunting and target practice
" 100 22LR rounds for dispatching trapped animals, small game hunting and target practice
" 10 20GA shells, turkey & grouse hunting and practice
" 200 9mm rounds, practice has exceeded 2000 rounds some years

After TEOTWAWKI,

approximately 50 rounds of 308 Win, 300 BLK, and 5.56mm NATO combined for hunting and checking weapon zero.
" 100 22LR rounds for dispatching trapped animals and snared large game
" 50 9mm rounds for self defense practice
" 10 20GA shells for turkey and grouse hunting

I've cut back on target practice greatly in the last couple years.

Guys think about it . Do you really want to post on here anything about the firearms you own or amo you might have ? Don't think they are not reading this stuff , taking notes and taking names . They probably even have a plant amongst our members .

 

If all goes as I expect I think that about 50 rounds a year not counting pellets and BBs will do all the shooting that I need. I am prepared to do a lot more than that but honestly if I have to be shooting and fighting all the time my chances of never catching a bullet are slim. Normal hunting is a sport. If I'm feeding my family hunting isn't the thing that I will do. Traps, snares and simple harvesting by means that are now VERY illegal are the way to go.

 

Agree with poltiregist...on this which is why I made the comment some time back about phishing expeditions by those who are often want to monitor such sites as this one....and others..particularly prepper sites...data collection.

To me entirely too many such questions going on here and appearing too often in a pattern.
But that is just me .the way I think.

I don't worry about the Men in Black monitoring me anymore. Honestly, if they were interested in grabbing me they could have done it years ago. I understand the paranoia. I sold every gun that I had that had paper on it and refused to buy any guns that required paper for several decades. the fact is that unless you want to crawl under a rock and hide 24/7/365 it is impossible nowadays to not be looked at.

I look at these nuts that have done the mass shootings and when you look close there were all sorts of warnings that were never noted. One had a dishonorable discharge and yet somehow it was never reported and he passed a security check to buy a gun. Another actually called the cops and told them that he was having murderous urges and was afraid he would hurt someone. Less than a month later he did. One had his family doing everything that they could to have him committed...but alas he had more rights than the children he killed after killing his mother. They had all sorts of indicators that they SHOULD have picked up on for the terrorists before 911 but let it slide by.

Our government just isn't very good at gathering information and then utilizing it in an effective manner. Then you have the political stupidity that makes Homeland Security consider veterans and conservative organizations as possible terrorist organizations. Hell, the idiots in Califorification in San Francisco have declared the NRA to be a terrorist organization.

I'm not saying that the government may never use the info to make a grab of people. Janet Reno under the Clintons killed people for legally selling guns and having a license to do so. The thing is that if the insane liberals get in power you may be grabbed for so many things that there is no possibility of being safe. If you vote Republican they may decide that you are terrorists. If you buy guns or ammo or go to a gun show you may be declared a potential terrorist. Membership in all sorts of organizations may get you in trouble.

the thing is that YOU are not the one that is a problem. The problem is that we in the US are beginning to fear our own government and the things that the Clintons and Obummer did and their effort at a government coup in the last election shows that this fear has legitimate roots. Nonetheless what we say here isn't going to hang us. We are not an offensive group. None of us are talking about gathering into a group and taking aggressive action even after a governmental collapse. We almost totally just want to be left alone. When the day comes that the government starts trying to grab people that might resist them we will be a long way down the list of people that they are worried about.

I decided years ago that if they kick my door that I am going to die fighting and take an entourage with me through the gates of hell. As G. Gorden Lilly said before they took him off the air. "When the feds come for you, aim for the head because they wear body armor." All the government has to do is not attack me and they will be good. I know there are a lot of people out there that 1are a lot more of a threat than that.

 

have to agree with that TexDanm… They know who I am, I was a FFL dealer for many years, NRA member and god knows what else and there is other.

I still won't post details, the only photos I post of firearms are my antiques or near antiques.

I have to laugh though, a CPL is simply a firearms owner registration.


For what it's worth, I never answered my own question. I'll probably use in a years time, a box of 22 lr and a box of high powered rifle ammunition if that. I'm a trapper, set my first trap at 5 year old and that is where my mind goes when it comes to harvesting wild game.

 

Poltiregist, I don't worry about such things. It won't change anything. The government knows who I am, they know what I am, they know what I have been trained to do and where I draw the line in the sand. They have many copies of my fingerprints, pictures of me and the rest of the file. If things get bad enough that old dogs like me are being rounded up, they will need a large pen to hold us.

On forums, it's just barking. If they come, I will bite.

If life has taught me anything, it's that it's too short for worry.

Be cautious when the Phishing turns to leading those easily lead to making statements...,..being set up.....manufactured into a bad guy as so much of government and it's pimps in the MSM are want to do today.

And prepper sites are very vulnerable to this kind of thing.


Our founders told us to not trust government....and government schools tend to do just the opposite.

"Bind down your government with the chains of the Constitution."


This means freedom and liberty for the people...not the government. The very opposite of the direction government tends towards going ….which, to me, is one reason Trump and Company are not liked by both political parties....He is trying to turn loose the natural productive efforts of people doing what they will do naturally if left alone.


Be very very carefull when the rats in the nest turn to making and inciting the members to make statements. All it would take is a different group of people in office.

I don't necessarily buy this....

While it is not necessarily hunting ...In Hawaii where my Fathers people live...when they came up ….they often fished to supplement their food supplies. Also those who were in better health would hunt the wild feral pigs which had gotten loose and ran up on the mountains and would occasionally come down to feed on peoples gardens.

They used guns and dogs...but some of them would use the terrain and the olde ways...spears....funneling them into a killing zone. Very very dangerous work and for the most quick, healthy, as well as experienced.

These people were poor back then working in the pineapple and sugar cane fields...today much of it is also coffee...Kona Coffee..and also today Macadamia nuts which the wild pigs love. Fishing and hunting the wild pig heavily supplemented their food supplies and budgets.

It is much more econ0mically affluent today ..but many of them have not forgotten the olde ways or why this was..and still hunt the wild pig.....with spears and dogs....again ..the youngest, quickest, most experienced, and healthy....and maybe a bit crazy too.

And very much like here stateside....the pigs are breeding rapidly and tearing up the terrain wherein much of the local species breed and live. My cousins tell me they are very destructive on the local flora and fauna....and their nesting grounds.

Think red flag laws , terrorist laws , some corrupt law official simply wanting your guns and amo for themselves . On Donald Trumps tweets today " the Democrats just voted to take away your guns .What do you think will happen if they eventually gain control ? They are already compiling a list of homes to raid . If some think here in the U.S. we still have democracy and freedom think again , that is likely the same thing people in North Korea , Russia and China are told . Do you think Obama and Hillary Clinton gave a dam about legality when they spied and tried to set up Donald Trump ? Do you think the U.S. - F.B.I. gave a dam about legality when they attempted a presidential cou. What makes anyone think they will treat the average guy on the street with fairness . I have done had my turn being under F.B.I. surveillance . My thanks goes to a ex- military guy now in a nearby milita for tipping me off that I was under federal observation .

 

Someone working behind the political parties here in America is setting up a private kingdom..a private fiefdom...and willing to use/,misuse government to do it. Also and often working behind corporate America to bypass government when needed....as part of their private fiefdom.

Most people do not know that under the English system of government ...there were privately owned colonies....owned and run by corporations..businesses. India was just such a corporate run and owned colony....so too China through Hong Kong....

Many of the Caribbean Islands were privately owned by corporations...not owned or run by the English Government.
These places were not Commonwealths.

IN these private colonies the corporations were the law and they could make or break any law they wanted or needed to facilitate their business.....

And the major most profitable business of these corporations was drugs...Opium.


The Opium Wars were to facilitate the spread of the Opium Business....not to stop Opium..;but to spread it...


The British gave up slavery because they found a much much better and more profitable way to make slaves...Opium.
Much much less overhead than slavery....much much more profit with less overhead.

But this is not how the history books read when they try to play the slavery/race blame game today...but it is what happened....and is still happening today.....slavery to drugs...bondage.

You have to be educated in a public school today not to be able to see this trail going on around you …..to the top levels of government.

And they don't trust you with a gun and ammunition.....think it through from a much deeper more knowledgeable history perspective....perhaps you will realize more about why you cannot be trusted with a gun and ammunition...even with your vote and opinion...thoughts. Even with your children....even with your monies earned.

I lived in Hawaii (Oahu) for 3 years and made friends with some of the locals (wonderful people) and pig hunted with them. I also showed them how to set 1/8 inch cable snares for the pigs. You either have to set for foot catches or check your snares twice a day in Hawaii to keep the meat from spoiling. Not sure about the legalities.

I believe techniques like this and others are what TMT is referring to. You can take large game without hunting, if you know how. When working for the government I accidentally killed a number of deer while killing coyotes in 3/32" cable snares so realizing that in desperate times a piece of cable can feed your family, without a shot fired.

Just a thought.

Where I was raised in S.Appalachia, you'd hear rounds going off several times a week. Sometimes I'd hear neighbors down the road dump a magazine. One guy lived up a hill from our place; he used to shoot into flocks of starlings; the shot would then rain down on our house. I thought nothing of hearing gunfire. Got all kinds of stories but I'm too tired right now to write'm down.

During hard times, you'll want to continue practice and will be dispatching birds to have some meat for your rice and/or beans. Hearts, livers, brains, wings, breast meat -- not much, but has nutritional value.

If your routine shooting draws in interloping thieves, good. Kill them with one of your minute-of-angle centerfires ... if your neighbors don't take them out first. I've only got two, but figure that'll suffice. Only one's got a mil-dot scope on it. During a protracted SHTF event(s), you gotta kill off the trash for the betterment of society. Where I'm from, anyone attempting to take somebody else's kill gets killed.

Gangs there used to didn't put that crap or any other unfair sh##. Indeed, the motorcycle crews from my era would have become the "good guys". No joke. They just wanted to sell dope to make needed money. I grew up with a gang leader (he took over from his dad); he wasn't evil. He got imprisoned for an attempted murder, however the person he was going to off was the evil one, NOT my childhood chum. They used to put on toy drives for the poor kids when Christmas time rolled round. Used to drive by their gang compound every time we went out shooting at the range. The truly bad people are the crazies -- they can't be fixed ... except with lead.

I did know one specific area that was inhabited with families who were simply evil. No civilized folk went up in there. I did one time drive through there (there was a mountain lake I wanted to see). That however was after the state police had raided back up in there and had arrested over 20 really bad s.o.b. genetic mutants. They were out-and-out demons; took a small army to clean them out; end of story.

Good point. Anthropologists claim that, back in the day, it took almost one square mile of land to support one hunter-gatherer. granted there is lots of empty land out here in the Western U.S., but if there is a major SHTF incident, most of the critters in my area will be hightailing it off to northern Alberta and B.C. before all the city people die off, and it'd be at least a decade before the wildlife bounced back. I'd guess that less than one percent of the survivors of a collapse would survive by simply hunting and gathering.

 

Many game animals do not migrate. Not in the sense that human hunters would have to follow the herds as our ancestors did. In my area (West Virginia, USA) none of the game migrates. Whitetailed deer live within a couple square miles there entire life and the same for feral hogs and I believe boar are the same. Wild turkey and black bear are much the same, with the exception of black bear having a much larger home range.

Caribou and reindeer in northern areas as well as most elk/red deer do migrate with the former having the largest migration routes. Moose/European elk tend to only migrate from summer range to a more protected winter range.

In my area small game populations are at the highest levels that they have been in probably 200 years. Fewer people hunting every year and fewer areas open to hunting have greatly increased the game.

Many native peoples also planted seasonal types of crops that they weren't there to tend year round. In my area black walnut trees, pawpaw trees, persimmon trees, wild grapes, ramps and others were planted in areas that those peoples knew to be in that area at harvest to utilize those foods. In the eastern and south eastern united states, the natives also grew crops (corn, beans, pumpkins, squash, sweet potato's, and more) while relying on game and fish for there protein sources.

My knowledge of original European peoples and how they survived during Neolithic times is limited. Not sure how the differences affected there hunter gatherer lifestyles.

I have to laugh at this a bit Lonewolf...but don't take it personal...

It is the word "Hunter Gatherer." in a more modern context....of which I am thinking here.

I should probably lay the background for this about "Hunter Gatherers.."


My lady friend of many many years passed away back in February ...and since then I have learned something about "Hunter Gatherers" for which I came to understand this good woman had protected/shielded me by primordially marking out her territory from all tresspassers…...foreign and domestic ...so to speak. That sometimes feral womanly instinct...if that even comes across correctly...or even sanely.


I am often want to joke ...that I need to get out more.....having become somewhat anti social...except with selected company ..I never was the social butterfly type or the bar fly type...not that I am against drink...I am just against being stupid....and can do stupid things quite sober.


Nonetheless...I have gotten out a bit on my own since February to make the discovery that todays women are rather more aggressive than the genre of which I remember.....and with this somewhat stunning revelation I realized todays male is not necessarily the "Hunter Gatherer " for which he may fancy himself..


Todays female can be quite the "Hunter Gatherer " in her own right or manner and does not necessarily use the tools as does a male....but this does not mean that she is not "Hunting and Gathering."

This was quite a revelation to me...having been sheltered from much of the two legged wildlife out here by this good woman.


Oh...and one other revelation ..came out of this awakening....and that is the number of women out here today who are also raising their grandchildren. I was a bit stunned about that as well and it too made me aware of how my Lady friend shielded me from much of the two legged wildlife out there....or perhaps I should say..." Primordial Competition."


Nonetheless...Lonewolf….I did chuckle to myself a bit at the Use of the word "Hunter Gatherer" having recently broadened my horizons in this arena by getting out a bit more than that to which I was accustomed.

Today's female seems quite good and even more aggressive than I remember in drawing in her prey very close...and even quickly too!!! And also ..a number of todays women seem to move around a lot...nomadic....

My maternal grandfather was a subsistence hunter until forced to find a job in a small town. He had his sweet spots -- like where many nut trees grew. He also roamed ... into the wind. I remember times where we went to find new nut trees. I remember times when we were WAY back in the mountains. He hunted when far too old to hunt. He raised gardens when way too old to dig.

Fishing was much the same. If the "good places" weren't good, then you'd get out your paddle.

Remember that the Indians dreamed of dying and going to the happy hunting grounds. To them, such was paradise.

My paternal grandmother was a hunter-gatherer of wild foods and herbs. Her one sister had good loamy land, this is where we gathered curly mustard and kale. My great-aunt was a farmer/saint. Always smiling and laughing.

My paternal grandfather's accuracy with a handgun was supernatural. Kept a spotlight mounted on his car. Snakes and bunnies. He was not averse to shooting human men. No, he was not a cannibal. He was a friend of Justice and victim of circumstance. Taught me how to tie a hangman's noose when I was five. Big events, these hangings back before WWII, before WWI. He was there. As were the preachers.
