There are all manner of nuclear war scenarios. Theater, regional, non-full-throw, full-throw two nations, full-throw multiple nations, and then there is the ultimate war in which the cobalt bombs are used.

Russia and the U.S. have space-based anti-ICBM platforms that can attempt to get as many warheads as possible, but that will be a losing battle. Many warheads will not be destroyed nor sufficiently deflected. Remote areas in the arctic, Canada, and Siberia could get hits from deflected nukes and get massive EMPs, maybe fallout, from warheads successfully detonated/deflected before reaching their intended targets.

If the cobalt bombs are used, then the people of the northern hemisphere of Earth are done-for -- too much radiation, plus too long of a nuclear half-life.

Air bursts (cities & "soft" targets) results in far less fallout. Silo-diggers are ones that toss a tremendous amount of radioactive material up and out over the country hit -- i.e. lots of fallout.

Were I Russia, I wouldn't waste nukes on U.S. cities. Those weaklings can't survive without their electricity. I'd just hit military and military industry.

For a nuclear winter to occur, a whole lot of nukes would have to be involved. Understand that the big volcanoes send cubic kilometers of earth up into the atmosphere. The little Mt. St. Helens eruption sent 540 million tons of ash into the atmosphere. Krakatoa sent up 25 cubic kilometers of earth up into the atmosphere.

If someone from the United States wants to survive a full-throw war, then that person should be looking for property down Argentina way. If China survives and the U.S. loses, then China will take western Canada and inevitably Australia. Australia hasn't the number of people nor the nukes to defend themselves. Russia wants Alaska back, if only for the oil.

gotta find me first. once the power goes off and the internet goes down-probably this coming winter if forecasts by the power companies are correct- I'll be off grid and off line and hard to find, I'm a recluse and my only point of contact is on this forum, once that goes down I'm in the wind :p

And too, before the New World Order really gets started, there will be EMP attacks and/or nuclear exchanges which will fry high tech devices. In a military conflict, communication and navigation satellites are "first-target" category. Everything the the high-tech folk love/depend-on will be toast.

An FM/AM radio is not high tech. People have been getting emergency broadcasts from their battery, or even crank/dynamo, powered radios for decades now.

    And too ...

Many "old dinosaurs" may just be the best shots. And hey, what do they have to lose?! I'd love to go in a firefight ... after I took-out several enemies half my age.

I re-qualified for Expert back when I was 55 (military base in Midwest). Recently, out at the range training a young'n, I did rather well with non-target new handgun and rifle sight-in. Unless a person has disabilities, age is not that big of a factor in their ability to return fire.

Let us not forget that a human is an ENORMOUS target compared to small game. If one is capable of shooting rabbits and squirrels in the head, then ...

When my maternal grandfather took me hunting, he was in his mid-70s and very overweight. Still, that man trekked straight up the sides of mountains. As a youth, hunting was what put meat on the table. In the forest, he was some other sort of creature and silently so. It was freaky that he made no noise -- he taught me to hunt after a rain.

I would be catastrophically disappointed in myself if I couldn't drop a human with my first shot.

The 37th Iowa Volunteer Regiment (known as the "Gray Beards") was formed. Mr. King enlisted at the age of 80 years.

"He served for several months before being discharged due to ill health. He was the oldest man on either side to have joined the Civil War.

"His grave site is well maintained and marked. It has a wrought iron fence around it and a large marker placed there by the Ottumwa and Cedar Rapids Civil War Round Tables."

in a post collapse world, those that can will revert to the old ways, those that cant will perish, its as simple as that.
modern technology wont help anyone survive if the infrastructure to power it dosent work anymore.

I am supposing all of you are aware of the latest move by Puttin today saying Nuclear confrontation is " no bluff " on his part . From what I have gathered from our active members though they either think trying to survive a nuclear war is futile so don't prepare for something this serious or they try to convince themselves such a thing would be confined to within the borders of Ukraine . I buy into neither way of thinking . However I will not try to convince anyone on here to prepare for a possible Nuclear World War 3 as that is their choice . As for me though I wouldn't be surprised to be woke up tonight as the ground trembles from Nuclear War Heads hitting the ground .

People in lower fallout areas can make make-do fallout shelters in their basements using layers of bricks or better-yet cinder or Portland concrete cap-blocks. Those who live near or downwind of designated military targets (missile silos, nuke storage facilities, in-service and re-activate-able nuclear power plants, Air Force bases will have to have deep thick concrete bunkers. Cap blocks have all manner of uses prior to nuclear strikes. When things go side-ways, hose-off the blocks (or wash them off in a stream nearby), then take them into your basement to construct a make-do fallout shelter. Pressure-treated wood and THICK plywood (not particle board) for outdoor projects will allow you to make a roof on your basement fallout shelter -- this will take-care of fallout in areas that are not in thick fallout regions (anywhere near or downwind of nuke missile silos).

most UK houses dont have basements, houses built after WW2 do not.

      Uh-oh!
In America's flatlands, many homes don't have basements either.
In the hilly / mountainous lands where I'm from, most folks' properties slope -- so, they just go ahead and finish the dig, concrete the lower floor and call it a basement. In poorer places the basement is dirt. Upside of a dirt basement is that it makes for a great root cellar -- constant temperature around 55 degree F. When I have a house with a basement (most all my houses have had a basement), I put a wood stove down there and put vents in the first floor. Convection helps heat the house. This works, but when temperatures head far down below freezing, then you gotta have a whole lot of wood ricked for the task.

Putin does not have a red button on his desk he can just push and launch nuclear missiles, there is at least 3 layers of protection to stop unauthorised launches, and may stop a madman launching them too, its obvious that Putin is not thinking rationally.

I agree up to a point but there seems to be a hard line nationalist faction that are pushing him towards escalating the conflict. If he does launch nuclear weapons of any kind I believe all kid gloves will come off and Russia will lose huge quantities of it military and naval assets within minutes to US and NATO fire

I don't dispute the post , but from what I have gathered Puttin has surrounded himself with some " less Nuke Them All " mentally impaired yes men . They are even crazier than Puttin . Those that didn't say yes had accidents , such as getting a broken neck falling down stairs . Some of his top men are practically begging Puttin to " Nuke all NATO countries " . --- As I have said many times " those that haven't prepared for anything no worse than a cat 5 hurricane ain't prepared enough " .

Like those fake closed cage wrestling matches we now see Puttin and his top men enclosed in a cage of surrender and defeat and backing down from their boasts of a Nuclear War or carrying forward their boastful rhetoric . Also in the cage is their opponent NATO and their boast to keep supplying more weapons into Ukraine . The results may not be as nice as Main Stream Media keeps feeding the peasants . Apparently just as many peasants believed the covid vaccine rhetoric , they also believe their television broadcaster as to what the planets position is . After all they can't panic the peasants , they would swarm the grocery stores , fuel stations and clean out the banks .

you cant swarm empty supermarkets, I have seen more empty shelves in supermarkets and grocery stores in the last two days than I have ever seen before and thats including the pandemic.
mind you we are a rural area and pretty much on the end of the supply line for everything (not just food) and thats in normal times.

Here in the U.S the Nuclear bunkers for the peasants were done away with . Only the high political class have access to a bunker . I suppose there are some exceptions . On the wall of one of my son's home is a actual Nuclear Fallout sign from the cold war days. This is a sign from one of the now non-existent fallout shelters .

I doubt the ones here are usable, they were abandoned years ago, probably full of water, too far anyway if there is ever a missile strike.

Honestly I think that the next major world wide war may be more of a massive wave of civil wars. I see the US as more likely to have some sort of civil insurrection than a major conflict with another major nation. Nuclear deterrent has made a world war between any of the major powers just so devastating that in the end everyone involved will be wiped almost OUT.

The problem is that we have allowed our infrastructure to become totally interdependent to the point that if any major part of it collapses it will all go down. The FACT is that ANY of the major cities become TOTALLY uninhabitable if the power is off for more than a few days.

Most large cities will be without food almost immediately. When the water stops running it is going to get crappy FAST. When the panic starts you can forget getting out of town in a car or truck. I’ve SEEN this in hurricane evacuations. They just don’t work. People in general are just too stupid to survive and they will take you down with them if you are on the roads with them.

Hurricane evacuations are not surprise things but nonetheless the idiots will hit the road with a quarter tank of gas. In the end the major highways will just become DEADLY ribbons of death. No food and no water and don’t dare let it be known if you are holding them.

the main problem is the entire population these days is totally reliant on The System.
during WW2 British people grew their own food, kept chickens and rabbits for meat, they also foraged and fished, very few people have the knowledge to do that now.
before WW2 very few houses had electricity, some had gas lighting but not electrical power, some didnt even have it until the 1960s and some even later.
that was then, a modern lifestyle now is impossible without electricity, and thats the point people need to realise.

if anyone thinks that a bunker is the answer, once you have eaten all your food you will reemerge into a dead world where nothing lives and nothing grows, a nuclear armageddon where no life will be possible for a millenia if then.

That isn’t strictly true, after all the areas around Chernobyl were repopulated by people who had been displaced from elsewhere.
A nuclear shelter need only contain around six weeks of supplies to allow you to shield from the most aggressive forms of radiation. The longer you can shelter the less radiation you will absorb. The lower level radiation has a much longer half life and is what will contaminate soil and water. The effect of this low level radiation is more likely to cause cancers and birth defects long term rather than kill outright.
Putin also has access to chemical and biological weapons and may see these as an option.

I nor my tribe will simply curl up and declare , we are all going to die so there is no use trying . My prepping is serious enough to at least have hope and we will not simply give up . Actually I do believe there will be survivors and my tribe plan to be amongst those few . I will go so for as to say I am " very confident " we would survive the initial attack as well as the aftermath of the devastated planet . --- I suppose that is why I have no problem facing the very likely probability of a Nuclear War whereas I see others trying to convince themselves that it will never happen and if it does it will be localized to Ukraine and low destructive tactics used . I don't have to cling to such notions and face the probability of a global Nuclear confrontation . No I don't believe Puttin is bluffing , but that still doesn't mean a global Nuclear War is immanent .

neither will I and mine just curl up but I think we have to face facts, in a nuclear war there is just nowhere safe in a place the size of Britain, just a few missiles would bracket the whole of this country and everywhere would be blasted to hell and gone, the following radiation and nuclear winter would kill all those who might just be lucky to survive.
mind you, if the Russians were satisfied with just nuking London and leave it at that then thats a different matter!!!
even the Russian population who were happy to see Ukraine invaded are now heading for the exits themselves.

Yes I agree in some locations survival would not be likely . Even those that happened to be living in a location that escapes the blasts and lethal doses of radiation , most would not survive , simply because they weren't materially nor mentally prepared for such an event .

Supposing the Nuclear aggressor did manage to curtail and limit the devastation , " so they can pillage the spoils " . Most people of the NATO countries would not survive with not any electricity , thus for most no water , no food stores , vehicle or boat fuel or outside medical help . That is where serious prepping comes into the picture . I intend to be in that picture .

The bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki scorched the earth, but within a few days / weeks flowers were blooming everywhere. People went back to farming. One man who was horribly burned by radiation and heat from both bombs lived to be over 85.

Had the people had iodine tablets far fewer would have gotten thyroid cancer.

The terrible thing is that in America's wheat basket are our missile silos. The fallout from those will end-up past the Mississippi River. Cities such as Memphis, St. Lois, and Chicago will get a bunch of HOT radiation.

It is hard for me to relate to the size of Great Brittian to some extent because we are talking about a NATION that is not much bigger than a THIRD the size of Texas. To me a hundred miles is a short trip. I have worked jobs that required 90 mile trips one way every day. I did this for one simple reason. The pay and money that I could make in Houston was great BUT I didn't want my familly living there. I am a country boy at heart and wanted my daughter to have the things that I valued when I was a kid.

There is something to be said for KNOWING everyone that your kid is going to be around for a half mile or so in EVERY direction. We had a lot more horses and cattle around us than people for most of her childhood. That sort of allows a kids to stay a kid for longer thn when you live in a city. She got to have horses and a level of freedom that just wouldn't have been possible in town. In Town two blocks away and you don't know who they will be around.

In the event of a world ending war if I can survive the initial destruction of the big cities I will have a good chance of long term survival. One thing that we have here is LOTS and LOTS of cattle, hogs and horses. There there are thousands of acres of national forrest land full of deer and hogs. Food won't be one of my big issues and after the first harvest season it will be even less as I get more land under cultivation and more livestock gathered.

For me and most of the people where I live the issue of survival will be the rampaging and starving hoards that will eventually pour out of the cities. If you live in a big city and plan to leave it in the event of a collapse you need to start now making yourself known in the area that you plan to go. STRANGERS are not going to be well recieved!

yes, if the bombing was limited to the UK capital and say one of the larger cities then survival out here in the sticks would be possible, however I dont think many people would want to live without electricity and running water, toilets etc.
on the other hand this would probably reduce the population even outside the bombed areas.

The nuclear target/fallow map above shows that Southern Mississippi, Southern Mississippi, and Southern Alabama (areas circled in color green) are somewhat safe, if the word "safe" could be used during a nuclear war. Why would one move from a safe area to ground-zero?

The above map , I totally disagree with as it is not taking into account of the actual nature of a radioactive particle filled cloud . I will try to explain to those that think somehow the radioactive material will somehow remain at ground level . Look at any picture of a Nuclear bomb blast . The cloud goes up and spreads out into the upper atmosphere . There it remains in the form of a cloud , just like smoke from a forest fire or dust ushered up into a cloud from a dry region . Where that cloud will descend back down to earth could even be on the other side of the planet . The radioactive cloud could disperse it's radioactive payload while remaining aloft through rain , but that would mean the cloud somewhere along it's journey accumulated enough moisture to do so . Prevalent wind direction in the upper atmosphere will determine which direction the cloud will travel . --In other words this map that Old Geezer seems to be so fond of is totally useless . For those that have concluded surviving a Nuclear War is futile , perhaps this will give them some hope . Survive the blast , and then it is sort of like playing Russian Roulet as to where the radioactive cloud will descend . Even someone living in the UK , if they survived the blasts , could find themselves living in a relatively radioactive free environment

an all out no holes barred nuclear war will decimate the whole planet.
the only way to survive is to be inside a reinforced bunker but the planet will be radioactive for many decades, if not a century, so you will live the rest of your life inside that bunker, coming outside will be suicide.
so maybe we should try to avoid a nuclear world war if at all possible???

I would think Lonewolf could very likely be correct in his assessment of an no holds barred nuclear war if carried out until one of the opponents runs out of Nukes , would not be survivable . However I believe the aggressor would not only want to conquer its advisory but would also want to harvest the spoils . The bigger question is , once the nuke slinging starts , can either side bring a stop to it ? The whole thing from start to finish could likely be measured in hours , not days -- Regardless I remain optimistic of my clans survival capability . We will continue to prep for the most horrific scenarios imaginable . Hard core to the end .

Every prepper must take into consideration their financial ability when it comes to prepping. If I was a multi-millionaire, then I would relocate to some distant location and build a super bomb shelter. Since I came to the prepper realization late in life and have a very limited budget, I prep for the most likely events I will face. I prep the best I can with what I have. I am very happy many others are better prepared and also feel no shame that I am not as well prepared. It is what it is.

I think many of us would do the same if we had the finances, but seeing as I am retired and living off pensions , that is not even a remote possibility.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...pc=U531&cvid=ebc38c48e6b94db6883a6a64da860fb7 ---Nuclear conflict is seen as very probable on this link . A couple of years or so ago I remember some of our members all chiming in because of assured mutual destruction a nuclear war would never happen . I may have been the only one that disagreed with this ostrich way of thinking . Now me giving it a 50/50 chance on another post , is actually being optimistic , going by the link above .

mutual assured destruction is still a fact, the only one stupid enough to start a nuclear war is Putin and some military experts say if he gives the order to fire his generals will take him out...permanently!!

actually, some of the people called up to fight for Putin's war seem to be old, silver haired, disabled and going by some of the photos in the papers they look like they have never seen a rifle before, "cannon fodder", they'll last about 5 minutes after they engage the Ukranian forces with their modern weapons supplied by Nato countries, Putin has said 500,000 dead Russian soldiers would be "acceptable"!!!
they have been labelled "Dads Army" after the popular UK TV program of the same name.

Never underestimate us older folks. We may not be able to move as fast as you younger folks but in a fighting situation, you really do not want to be down range of us. The old folks have lived longer, have less to lose and a lot more life experience. It is a lot harder to convince an older person to do something stupid on the battlefield. The saying "Young and Dumb" comes to mind. There is a reason the military want young recruits.

For a great majority of my life I lived in a place that survival was just not possible. For one thing we had so many prime targets that we would likely catch a bunch of nukes. For another you couldn't build underground. If you dig a hole three feet deep and come back tomorrow you will have two feet of water in the hole. That is what you get when you live 10 feet above sea level in a wet and swampy place. The good news was IF you survived the strikes there was plenty of food available.

I now live a hundred miles inland and have no primary targets close by. I'm nearly a hundred miles north of Houston. The prevailing winds should blow the crud south. The area where I live is a little on the rough side. There are a lot of prisons here and prison guards are not going to be very soft hearted. In a worst case senario those in the max units will be lucky if they just catch a bullet. Anything is kinder than abandoning them locked in their cells.

I do know that the ones in the lower level prisons, if released, will RUN for the hills. They know what their fate will be here. They will need to run because most people here will shoot anyone in a prison uniform on sight.

for the best part of my life I lived in a city next to the coast with a naval base and a dockyard that repaired submarines and frigates for the navy, survival there will not be possible once the main infrastructure shuts down and with the number of people that live there.
if I was still there living in my old flat/apartment I would bug out not using the roads which would be blocked with traffic but use the rail line to head north out of town.
I left nearly 25 years ago and that was the best decision I ever made.

When I lived in Town I always kept a motorcycle. Run early, run hard, go fast and have a place to go to where you will be welcome. If you can't get out now you can do what I did. Rent a mini warehouse someplace else to run to. That way you can go light and fast. I live there now so don't need that.

If Texas or the federals run out of money to keep the monsters in prison, then Texas should do what it is doing with illegals, bus them up north into the big cities then unchain them.

What a great idea! Could use an off-road bike. When the trains show up go off-road until they pass.
