We barter everyday, our main battering commodity is money and that won't change...it works.

UK supply chain, certainly for food is among the best going and the only real and very temporary issues in recent times are down to panic buying and the French playing silly buggers at the ports.

The pound has perked up again and will level out. Unemployment rate is much the same as the USA at @ 3.5% (here in Spain its over 12% and over 20% for the under 25s), national debt if very high for the UK and will take decades to sort out but its a drop in the ocean compared to the near $25 trillion dollar debt of the USA (which is growing). Interest rate is IIRC 2.25% and in the USA its 3%.

I'd say to the US members they need to be concerned with the state the USA is in and not worry about the UK, we'll sort ourselves out ;)

I could have spent a couple of hours trawling the internet for graphs and doom and gloom articles so popular with some here but I just can't be bothered to be honest, I'm positive someone will come along a post full of ...stuff.

not so sure about the supply chain, there have been some shortages lately especially the stuff that is imported and not just due to panic buying although the announcements about Sunflower Oil didnt help.
the UK govt has a huge debt and I dont see how it will ever be paid back but maybe it isnt supposed to be.
as for money, that has collapsed before and been worthless and not just in 3rd world countries, Germany and Russia have both been casualties of this in the past, and that dosent mean it wont happen again.
we dont barter money, we exchange it for goods.

globalism is certainly a very precarious idea and the supply chain is far too fragile.

Local business and supply is probably safest in the long run.

"... The pound has perked up again and will level out. ..."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From NASDAQ.com; Sarah Brady Forbes Advisor; Oct 1, 2022 04:35AM EDT

"British Pound Hits All Time Low Against The Dollar. What’s Next?"

    https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/british-pound-hits-all-time-low-against-the-dollar.-whats-next

"The pound fell to $1.03 on September 26, hitting an all-time low against the U.S. dollar.

    "When Will the Pound Recover?

"In a statement from the Bank of England (BOE), bank Governor Andrew Bailey said that policymakers are prepared to further adjust interest rates in order to address the fall of the sterling. But the BOE’s next meeting is not scheduled until November 3 and Kwarteng isn’t slated to publish his medium-term fiscal plan until November 23.

"In the meantime, some economists are projecting that GBP could reach parity with the dollar—a major shift after decades of averaging around $1.50 USD.

"Whether or not that will happen depends on the U.K.’s fiscal policy response in the coming months.

"Joseph Perry, market analyst at City Index, says the BOE is already taking corrective measures to increase the value of the pound in the short-term. But the bigger picture is still uncertain. 'Unless the U.K. fixes the fiscal issue, the pound may continue to move lower, longer-term,' says Perry."

So you barter money for cooking oil then ;)

Plenty of oil in the shops now, plenty of flour in the shops now, these things happen, get resolved.

Off topic but I don't care, I've got my first session at a local(ish) gun club tomorrow and I really looking forward to it, they have indoor handgun ranges and outdoor for rifles.

we dont use much cooking oil, dont do that sort of cooking.
flour supplies come and go, there was a shortage long before the Ukranian war started, not that it helped.
believing things will never get bad or that problems in supply wont happen is nonsense.

LW, I've very aware of how bad things can get and prepare but I won't be beaten down into a state of mind where your waiting and pretty much hoping it hits the fan, I leave that to others and you know what...I sleep like a log and wake up happy.

Now here is a strategy -deny, deny , deny , Pretend everything is going just like you would like and it will come true . -- I guess I don't do right because I always look for the most horrible and bad things that can happen to society " and that is the scenario I prepare for ". Just stuffing back a few extra cans of food and proclaiming " what I would do " when SHTF just isn't part of my survival plan . My plan is the milk I get from my goat , eggs from my chickens , honey from my hive , fish from a wadable stream that menders through my property and is only a 1/4 mile walk to get to , wild game abounds outside my door , a garden that isn't just something in a bucket , a spring for water . ---And yes despite one members annoyance I even prepare for Nuclear Holocaust . Now I am not proclaiming I will survive a Nuclear Holocaust , but try I certainly will . I refuse to lay down in despair and proclaim there is no use trying to stay alive anymore and everyone else should give up to . That is just not my DNA . . Actually none of my tribe plan to just give up . -- Oh I to sleep well . Even when I returned from the killing fields of Viet Nam I slept just fine and I wasn't somewhere off in a safe area pushing a pencil " Paratrooper/ green beret . The battalion commander quickly recognized my skills and had me classified as a weapons expert as my specialty . Whenever the high ranking officers traveled in Viet Nam they usually had me right by their side with my m16 .

its a sheeple thought process that nothing will ever go wrong and if it does the govt will save them, well history has proved both these things to be untrue. the only thing the govt will do in a SHTF situation is look after its own.
where I live its well known that in a SHTF situation we will quickly be left to our own devices, we are hundreds of miles from the seat of govt and our geology is such with many hills and rivers and bridges (many of them old pack horse bridges,) it wont take long for us to be cut off from the rest of the country, with only one rail line and only one real main road and these have been cut off before and not even a SHTF event.
I'm not even going to discuss the nuclear question, in a country the size of Britain nuclear survival is just not possible, nuclear war is the only event I do not prepare for, actually thats not true, I dont prepare for ANY event, I prepare to survive and adapt to what comes after, social collapse and all that comes with it.
my parents never discussed their war service as didnt many of their generation, they were just glad the war was over .

People who are in decent shape, just hike or bike to where they want to go. Semi-decent hikers could do Portsmouth to Torquay in a week without breaking a sweat. London to Southampton is only 80 miles. Squishy-soft city-dwellers wouldn't make it, but immigrants and any hard core lot would hike/pillage/steal their way to whatever corner of England they wanted to go / had to go to keep on eating.

Here in the Southern States, that sort would get shot dead. Last time a guy tried to get into my house, I had a shotgun and I spoke with him. He made the correct decision to leave. Post-SHTF, there would be no discussion.

In my youth, I hiked with Appalachian Trail through-hikers. I was no where near as good of shape as them, but I sure learned what the human body can endure. Through the mountains (up and down, up and down, ...) these guys made over 20 miles a day. Often, they we were hiking on rocks which beat your feet to death. One friend of mine made it from Georgia to Massachusetts, then his feet gave out. X-rays showed he had all manner of mini-fractures of his metatarsals and heel bone (calcaneus). Hiking on rocks will do that. Regular earth -- even if it is packed -- is far more forgiving.

The immigrants coming into America from the south have had to hike hundreds of miles. Sometimes in Mexico, they can catch a bus if such is available. They have no special shoes.

Torquay? why the hell would anyone want to go to Torquay? its a dump, full of old people and feral youth.
if someone is going to walk out to somewhere, and thats still very unlikely in the UK, and the numbers who might try will be very small, a small group rather than a mob, they have to know where they are going and why, what are the advantages going to be, if they dont know the area and what they are up against they will fail.

Torquay I used because it was a spot on a map, just some mile-marker.

There are hundreds of thousands of migrants in the U.K.. These people traveled hundreds, even thousands, of miles to get there. These people are not squishy-soft urbanites. They only gather in cities so as to be within their own culture. When it hits the fan and they run out of food, they will again migrate to where food exists. They will fan-out of the cities and look for food. Their culture is more violent that Western culture and their men will "do what they have to do" to feed their women and children.

These people are not British. These people are not a part of Western culture. They are as tough as leather. They are anything but weak. Their men come from cultures of aggression. There are over a half-million of these folk living in England right now. In times of famine, they will NOT sit in place and die. If they have to march to where there is food, then they will do so.

Squishy-soft Westerners might die in situ. Other cultures will absolutely not. They will march, even as they have already have done to get to the West.

Rural English had better be ready to "share", or have plenty of ammunition for their shotguns. When things go sideways, you're gonna get "visitors" and they will certainly not be fellow English.

Migrants have come to Britain for a better life, many are economic migrants not refugees, they settle in the Capital and many of the larger Northern cities, amongst their own kind, when an event happens they are better off amongst their own people than wandering around among the English, we English are very suspicious of strangers.
also remember that English roads are not like American roads especially once one leaves the motorways and main highways, not every country road leads somewhere and not all of them are signposted, many crossroads and Y junctions can lead anyone not familiar with the area in all kinds of directions, as we say down here they are "Pixie Led". I have come across many non locals lost amongst the deep narrow lanes.
just wandering aimlessly "hoping" to find food, water and shelter is not a plan for survival.
the problem post collapse will not be "incomers" its more likely to be non prepared locals.

Clearly brexit started the poo ball rolling and covid did not help.

Project fear set out to scare people, promised hundreds of millions of pounds extra going to the NHS, taking control of our border, never happened, and an economic boom which even without covid would not have happened for many years if at all.

"And how well it the E.U. doing? I did not notice over whelming prosperity in the E.U.."

Not as bad as the media may tell you. Take a look at The Legatum Prosperity Index as a rough indicator
https://www.prosperity.com/rankings Much of Europe have more freedom than the USA which may surprise you; as a 'land of the free' your not in the top twenty countries for freedoms.

I’m reluctant to wade into this argument but on the whole world economies are not doing well, Liz Truss’s wanton vandalism of the UK economy is unarguably going to set back any possible recovery from the effects of Brexit and Covid…That said it is also possible to talk ourselves into a financial depression if all we do is look at doom and gloom, for instance, I sell antique Sheffield pocket knives and the weak pound has nearly doubled my exports to the US. As all my prices are in £ Sterling it makes little difference to me, I’m doing well out of this and my US customers are happy as well.

First, I don't have to ask Mommy government if I have her permission to buy a firearm. In non-urban regions of America, our crime rates look like European crime rates. It's the knuckle-draggers who are killing each other.

Could one purchase a farm in Europe for the following prices? Here are some land/farm prices in East Tennessee:

    https://www.landwatch.com/tennessee-land-for-sale/eastern-region/farms-ranches

    upload_2022-10-17_17-19-26.png

Taxation (Tax rate in the UK is 45.0%; 16th place in Europe)

In the SouthEastern part of the United States one can live VERY comfortably on $150,000 a year. In the S.E., $75,000 will afford one a middle class lifestyle. Up in New England or out in California, tax rates are through the roof and there are many laws impacting one's everyday life. In the South and in America's Heartland, the government pretty much stays out of people's business. Post retirement, we went to an independent insurance agent for extended coverage (Social Security pays for Medicare and you can get part B for a song -- that pays hospitalization). We got pharmaceutical insurance at a very reasonable rate. Went to the pharmacy this past weekend and got four medications for two dollars ($2). If one has a hospital bill and is without much of an income, they can set up payments for $50 / $75 per month (under $100). If one is injured or has an emergency condition, hospitals are required to take them in. If we in America could just put the hammer down on ambulance-chasing attorneys, hospital bills would drop precipitously. All hospitals, even in rural areas, have CAT scans (even MRI equipment in some) and there are no waiting lists. Elective surgeries got backed-up during the covid craziness, but now they've gotten caught-up.

I’m in Dyfed Powys area of Wales where firearm ownership is probably the highest in the UK with an average of 1 firearm for every 11 people (which is high for the UK) yet violent offences involving firearms are very, very rare here. Most gun crime in our area involves theft of shotguns along with vehicles.

Brexit has been an economic and business disaster. The job of trying to pick apart a fifty year relationship involving business, finance, science intelligence, defence and law was far too complicated to rush but that’s exactly what they did. The Northern Ireland question was kicked down the road until there was no time left and so they botched it together at the last moment. Boris and Davis failed to grasp a lot of the fine print in the Brexit agreement which has disadvantaged UK businesses,

I think your right there but it matters not, the easily frightened sheeple panicked and voted out while tens of thousands of remainers never got out of bed to vote believing no idiot would vote leave.

I don't like much of the EU policies but to isolate this little island from a massive trading block with free movement for workers was an act of economic suicide. If we stayed we had the chance of forcing change in the EU now we have zero impact on them.

We will have to rejoin sometime in the future but sadly it will be on their terms...I'm not happy with that notion.

It's a same-day background check. One needs no handgun certificate except in socialist states such as New York and California. Even in these socialist states, one needs no certificate of any kind for rifles and shotguns.

The background check is same-day for the purpose of making sure a person has no criminal record. If the phone lines are backed-up, sometimes a person must wait and hour or two to take their newly-purchased firearm.

Some states have one handgun a month laws. This was put in place due to the felons getting those with no criminal record to make straw-dog purchases for them.

Were prosecutors to throw the book at felons and not drop firearms charges, these felons could be sent to federal prisons and buried there for 10 year stretches. When the prosecutors get tough on crime, they are accused of being racist.

The EU needs the UK back in so as to spread-out the horrific amount of debt that has built up. Germany and the Scandinavian countries simply cannot afford to continually bail-out Italy, Spain, and Greece.

Here in the States we have bankrupts cities.

Detroit made the news with its bankruptcy years ago, but it is not alone. Armies of accountants are sweeping fiscal liabilities under the rug. The federal government keeps pumping funds into such cesspits, i.e. the tax dollars of responsible citizens across the nation.

Entire states are carrying debt that bespeaks monetary irresponsibility -- we are talking tens of billions of dollars indebtedness per state. Add to that unfunded liabilities ... that are ongoing ... and increasing.

    https://www.dailywire.com/news/9-most-bankrupt-states-america-yours-list-aaron-bandler

    ---------------------------------------------------------

"Chicagoans Prefer Bankruptcy Over Higher Taxes As City Debt Piles Up"

    https://www.illinoisopportunity.org...ptcy-over-higher-taxes-as-city-debt-piles-up/

"Chicago teachers vote this week on a new $1.5 billion contract, the most expensive teachers contract in city history. But as Chicago teachers head to the ballot box, Chicago residents appear to be getting antsy about the city’s mounting bills. A new poll released today by the Illinois Opportunity Project finds that many Chicago residents are supportive of bankruptcy rather than hiking more taxes to help the city navigate its beleaguered finances.

"In addition to paying the $1.5 billion price tag on the new teachers union contract, the city also faces an unfunded pension liability of $150 billion; that’s nearly $150,000 per Chicago household.

“'Chicago is not alone. Illinois has dozens of municipalities and local units of government that are near insolvency. Cities from Chicago to Cairo are saddled with unsustainable pension debts. City costs, property taxes, and debt that continues to rise in an unsustainable fashion,' said Matthew Besler, President Illinois Opportunity Project. "

Why do you think that Max R? There was a very strong case put forward by John Simpson where he argued that the EU had become its now worst enemy. In short he suggested that the wooing of former USSR states had served to weaken Russia and remove what was seen in USSR days as a safety belt of land between the west and her own lands. He suggested that this was a well entrenched idea its belief went back to just after WW2 when Russia did not want to fight on its own land if there was a further war in Europe. He also suggested that it was likely that Russia woke fight a land war in an attempt to retain some of that land - well it certainly seems he was right on that. He makes a powerful argument and is no idiot. His belief is quite widespread and deserved to be taken seriously, he is a serious and well respected journalist.

Many who voted out did not do so purely over issues such as migration (the majority of economic migrants not being from the EU). There have been repeated suggestions for well over a decade of an European Army, which would be separate to NATO and, for many, that again smacked of past history not learned or understood. Add to that the appalling way in which Greece was treated by the EU (symbolic smashing of their banknote printing plates by EU officials when thy joined the Euro). The list goes in. I get fed up with people portraying those who voted leave as racists, anti-immigrants, xenophobes and frightened sheeple, they are no more "sheeple" that those who voted to remain - in fact some studies suggest that those who chose to vote out comprise a larger contingent of older and better education people. I get irritated by those who lost the referendum continually implying that anyone who voted leave is someway less educated and could be so easily swayed by such cheap political propoganda - it smacks of sour grapes from those who wished to remain and is immature and misguided and typifies the poor way in which both sides of the debate performed prior to the actual referendum. Those who are disappointed that the vote went towards the leave contingent should have got off their backsides, gone out and canvassed support for their cause. Nobody ever knocked on my door asking me to vote remain.

The referendum campaign was based on misleading propaganda from both sides, not helped by self serving and reputation building MPs who used it to further their careers and popularity (this b******s about the referendum bus, for example, was just a diversion that, quite frankly, undermined the seriousness of the referendum campaign), and whilst close in numbers the referendum result was for leave, in these days of rapidly disappearing democracy it was actually an indication that democracy does exist, even if it is the lasting dying flickers of the fire.

The simple fact is that the UK is still polarised by Brexit and if those who voted to remain wish to point out how much the politicians that dealt with Brexit and pushed through a fairly poor deal have fucked up (both at the time of and since Brexit) then that is their prerogative to do so. Brexit hasn’t really hurt me because I am well insulated against its effects but as far as I’m aware the main beneficiaries of Brexit are our international competitors.

nope, pretty faces dont win elections.
what we need is the old fashioned statesmen MP's instead of career politicians who are only out for what they can get.

Good luck with that Lonewolf. Real statesmen are about as rare as a totally honest politician.

I have just about given up on our democratic system. We get to pick between a couple a crappy handpicked candidates that owe their soul to investors and the party politics. Once in office they forget and laugh at the promises that they made to the little people and serve their masters. The sad thing is that the voters fall for the same lies from the same people over and over. Honestly I don't think that "The People" are in general smart enough to really elect their leadership.

yeah I know that Tex, I was just thinking about the old days when politicians at least had some integrity, long gone now.
we have a virtual 2 party system over here, yeah sure there are smaller parties but they never stand a chance, its swap and swap about with the 2 main ones, bit of a merry go around really.
both as bad as each other, conservatives are hand in glove with big business and labour its the unions.

I only vote because if you don't vote you shouldn't gripe about the yahoo that you get. I usually do NOT vote for either of the primary party candidates. I try to find someone that I would like to have represent me and that is who I vote for. I know that they will not be elected but I at least expressed my dislike for the big picked candidates of the Democrat or Republican parties.

Bring Back Boris, compared to him the rest are "also rans".
and if the conservative MP's dont realise this they dont deserve to be MP's.

Boris was corrupt, he is a liar who used the grant system to give cash to a former lover. He lied to parliament and he lied about leaving Europe…why the hell would we want that piece of crap back in office?

Lonewolf, Is there a limit on how many times a person can be elected and hold an office in England. In the US as far as the presedent, it is two times and done for life. I personally don't like that but it is law.

Here in the States, a Republican who votes for socialist programs is referred to as a RINO, Republican in name only.

I think things are WAAAAAYYYY too late to save the economies of Europe, England, and the once United States. These debts cannot be paid-off, plus politicians pretend that there is no need to pay-down debts, and the Leftist see no reason to even slow down the growth of debts. Borrowing against an imaginary future to generate "money" for now is called bankruptcy. If a private citizen borrows to borrow more money to pretend to be able to pay off their debts -- the original debt being impossible to pay-off in the first place -- that person can be prosecuted for fraud. Western governments today have card-house economies.

    upload_2022-10-20_18-18-2.png

The U.S. Fed is dead. If it slows the economy via higher interest rates to halt rising inflation, they'll kill the very economy from whence taxes are levied AND make government debts far more costly (far beyond affordable). At a certain point, the nation's GDP-to-debt ratio gets to where the government cannot pay the interest on the debt = game over. On the other hand, if the Fed pumps more "money" into a slowing economy / recession , the risk of hyperinflation goes through the roof.

Only children believe that Mommy and Daddy will always be there to protect them.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a bad thing. Fuel cut-offs to Europe are a bad thing. History teaches that catastrophic things lie in wait. Such horrid misfortunes are always invisible to the masses of each doomed generation.

"Adolf Hitler is a strange fellow, but he isn't so stupid as to invade Poland."

"We Japanese will fight to the last man. America will never invade our country, plus they have no weapons that can defeat us."

"We citizens of Pompeii have nothing to worry about concerning that stupid Mount Vesuvius. It is only rumbling. Those who are leaving are paranoid and ignorant."

Boris coming back would be a nightmare, we would never hear the end of him claiming he came back to save us. Brexit was flawed because Boris did not negotiate it properly. He was a bloke that had so little respect for the electorate that he was happy to have parties at number 10 whilst he rest of us were in lockdown. You think we are in trouble now, if he comes back this will just be the start of it - I was convinced he would lead us into war with Russia just so that he could have his "Churchill moment".

Right now we need someone cautious and steady, not a vibrant personality.

the only one who has a mandate from the voters is Boris, we dont need backstabber Sunak or trans lover Mordant, most of the others are just also rans not up to winning the first time around. a load of wets.
Boris needs to come back and finish the job, partygate was a hatchet job by the remainers in the parliamentry party.
Boris already has 50 of the 100 backers he needs to run.
The country backed him in 2019 and will again, anyone less will let the marxist Labour party ruin this nation.

He got himself thrown out, don’t believe the hype that Sunak caused Boris’s demise…Boris did it to himself by surrounding himself with total wankers, it was entirely self inflicted. I’m just waiting for Dominic Cummings to bring out the next instalment of Boris’s dirty secrets.

Boris left with his head hung in shame, his antics and the resignation that resulted in them is, in part, why we are in this ruddy mess now. The Conservatives have so many people that are far better and could do the job so much better.

his resignation was a result of Sunaks hatchet job and others getting in on the act, not for the good of the country but to further their own careers.
I wouldnt trust anyone else to run this country.

I believe he had to go, his actions throughout the pandemic were questionable at best, but there are so many rule breaking acts on his record, for example, a £50k, undeclared, bung for the gold wallpaper in the number 10 flat. That was not followed up as he had resigned but, had he remained in power that would have been a significant enough breach of protocol to get him removed. Then you have the rather dodgy placing of contracts for PPE, again not followed, but also carried out under a protocol breach. Partygate, a breach of the rules imposed during lockdown where the Metropolitan Police found that he had broken the law. The accusation by. fellow MP the strictly confidential documents had been left in the number 10 flat with the allegation being made the Carrie Johnson was seen to have been reading one. Then there as the presence of carrie Johnson a non-elected person attending a "business meeting" during lockdown in the number 20 garden - that particular event was ruled not to have broken lockdown rules by the Metropolitan Police, so why was the wife of a PM involved? That was a massive breach of protocol. Johnson did not go purely because of the Chris Pincher affair (although he admitted having been previously notified of it) he went because he was found guilty by an international enquiry of lying to the House and, by association, us. The is not fit to be considered to be PM and any likelihood of his return will destroy the Conservative party and its reputation for decades.

There are far better people that Boris to run this country and the mess we are in now is partly his legacy.

we will have to agree to disagree on that.
I dont think any of the others are fit to stand in his shadow, and 50 MP's agree with me already.

Thankfully it is moving quite quickly. I don'y think a three month, drawn out, leadership battle would be good for the country. Apparently Penny Mordaunt has declared she is running, she is the first one to do so.

I think the previous contest was a fit up, we were supposed to get Sunak but the members messed it up by voting for Truss.

Funnily enough I though that at the time. Truss seemed to be a rank outsider from the first moment and I wondered why Conservative party members picked her. She and her Chancellor have certainly made a mess of things. Thee is now a campaign to try and stop her getting the £115,000 annual pay for having been prime minister - not a bad mention for 45 days work.
