The following is posted from this weeks Woodpile Report. It’s been a busy week, so I am just now getting to this weeks Woodpile Report. I think this is spot on and shows symptoms of our world going sideways. I see this degeneration in all aspects of our society and most manifestly at our state and national governments and all things these entities have their fingers in (schools/universities, not for profits that suck off the government tits, and large corporations). At this point, I think the tipping point has been achieved and there is no going back

America's Dark Age, PJ Media - 82 years ago, our ancestors took just two years to design the entire Bay Bridge and award the contracts. Our generation required five years just to plan to replace a single section. Hollywood once gave us blockbuster epics, brilliant Westerns, great film noirs, and classic comedies. Now it endlessly turns out comic-book superhero films or pathetic remakes of prior classics. In terms of learning, does anyone believe that a college graduate in 2020 will know half the information of a 1950 graduate? Our ancestors were builders and pioneers and mostly fearless. We are regulators, auditors, bureaucrats, adjudicators, censors, critics, plaintiffs, defendants, social media junkies and thin-skinned scolds. A distant generation created; we mostly delay, idle and gripe.

7b2311f5037caa29e5f155365fd08a4b.gif Academia's Dark Age, Z Man - It’s tempting to dismiss the madness we see in academia as trivial or temporary, but this deliberate effort to plunge the intellectual space into darkness has been going on for generations. Somewhere in the last century people in the West began to lose the ability to control their institutions, meaning the knowledge of how they work and why they were created or how they must be maintained in order to properly function. In theory, the people running the society of tomorrow are now being trained on the colleges of today. Yet, they are being taught things that are laughably false by people who are often suffering from mental illness. In other cases, they are taught by people who hate them and hate the West. The dark age is not the result of a natural process or an accident of history, but the goal of the people who rule over us.

I pulled this quote from the same report. IMHO it is very compelling.

When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them against you … you may know that your society is doomed. Ayn Rand

If people were half as concerned about what happens in the classroom as they were about what happens on the Football field it might be a different story. Maybe you wouldn't have a 12 to 1 ratio liberal to conservative in who gets hired.

I always believed if you would read the writings of Woodrow Wilson Smith AKA Lazarus Long and take them to heart, you and your progeny will survive and prosper in the face of adversity.

if someone continues to think like that then yes.
in the end whether someone survives or not may just be down to their attitude, a negative attitude and they will fail, if someone assumes they will fail then they probably will,
a positive attitude and they could succeed.

I often work with university "intellectuals".

Now, do I need to say anything else?

Loved the show "Twilight Zone" hosted by Rod Sterling !

    Thanks for mentioning, Old Geezer.

As an aside, was discussing with someone that if most all / all public universities were to collapse, there would still be excess capacity in the system for real students and real instructors/professors.

    Lenin is laughing at us.

Albert Einstein got his degree from a German technical college. He had no degree in physics, let alone theoretical physics. He and his wife could think (she did the math, no kidding). He had a very creative mind. Half of the degrees handed out at universities are on-par with a degree in underwater basket-weaving. A PhD. in Sociology -- give me a break!

Within the above link, I agree with listed items #1 through #36. These studies (1-36) are best handled by apprenticeships or are overtly stupid, just plain old stupid, even strange. Real degrees would prepare people for specialties should someone wish to go into a more narrow area of study and practice. Trade schools currently do a great job of prepping folk for needed skill sets -- one doesn't have to have a bachelor's degree for such job preparation.

Universities should lose funding that they use to promote such courses as "Amphibian Flatulence as Relates to Global Warming". "Gender Studies" -- I want to puke.

Well, in 1969 -- after I got out of the military -- I got a BA in #19 which didn't pay very well, but I still enjoyed it. When I was 45, I got a deg. in engineering technology which could've been done by apprenticeship. When I was 63 I got an MBA which was fun but didn't do anything for my career, being that I was already old. Now that I'm too old and senile to chase another degree, I'm taking fun courses at a JuCo for #32 and #43 and having a good time ...

... and raising goats and chickens.

My point is that you get as much out of any study in a college what you put into it, and most of the courses that are available are worth as much as you want them to be. Based on my experience, the people to got to college to actually learn something -- and the people who teach them -- have their shit together just like anyone else, even if they vote for the wrong guy!

step daughter is a lecturer at a well know college, she says her students do NOT want to learn the whole subject but just enough to pass the exam, such is the sort of people we have these days.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

I view the American universities as a combination of disguised unemployment - involving both the student body and the faculty/staff. Since both the public and most of the "private" colleges and universities are publicly-funded, it's a de facto political club supporting the sponsors. Think of peer-reviewed studies and the next load of research grants.

Don't forget Professor Leonard Jeffries. a Department Director at the once famous CCNY ("the poor man's Harvard) and his racial studies of "sun people" and "ice people".

There is also much significance to the current "admissions scandal" where parents purchased access to certain universities for their kids. It has about zero to do with acquiring knowledge / skills. The few universities involved are part of the supporting apparatus for America's Sanhedrin, our version of the temple on the mount.
