Fishing Gear.....how Many Truck Loads You Got....???

Really........how is your depth of inventory of fish procuring equipment...........??? I don't really know, but my guess is that I have at least 20 fishing rods and maybe 30. They are sized from ocean fishing for 400 pound Halibut down to small backpack rods for Grayling.

How is your net inventory......??? Have you shopped for hooks on say "Amazon.com"....??? You can get hundreds and hundreds of hooks for a few dollars. I keep those fish spears that are like a pitch fork with five or six tines, in my survival caches. They are cheap, and attach to the end of a pole.

 

I get special "Federal Subsistence Rights" for harvesting fish and game for personal consumption. I even am allowed one Beaver per day (all year) harvest, must use either the meat for food or the pelt.

 

I have been considering adding fishing spear heads to my stash , but wonder if spearing say a under one pound fish in suspended water if the spear would penetrate are simply push the fish away ?

 

Something I have failed at is trapping crawfish . Seems they are not that interested in my bait . I have tried this with the purpose of learning to trap them for food during the apocalypse . Suggestions welcomed .

 

Allow me to ask stupid question because I'm not familiar with US practice

Why do you even need gov't permit just for fishing (for whatever purpose)? Does the supply of fish are scarce? or is there any species conservation issue?

Depending on where you fish laws vary . Some places there is a limit on how many fish you can catch and keep based on the species of fish . Some species in some places as for as I know have no limit . This is supposedly done to regulate how many fish are available and quite frankly is a money making scheme to entrap someone so they have to pay a fine because they accidently messed up and did something illegal . The government also requires fishermen to purchase a fishing license , another money making scheme . At least that is my opinion of the fishing situation . Someone else may have a different outlook .

 

I have lots of hooks, line and misc. a few fishing poles. Two gill nets, small mesh, 1.5 and 2 inch. What I have in addition which I think is important is some experience. When I was a youngster I made and used fish traps, trot lines and jug lines. I think I could revert back to that easily. I have never fished much with a pole.

 

I have more than enough sports fishing gear, like rod and reels, line, hooks, lures, etc. as well as fly fishing gear. I also have trot lines, some jug and bank lines which are legal currently in my area. I also have a throw net, gill net, crayfish traps and fish traps stored away. I may even have a limited supply of rotenone stored somewhere about the place. My river are swift and rough which limits what will work.

For the really small fish, try a frog gig. To answer your question, my experience is that the multi-tine spear will just push them out of the way. Less than 1 pound, even the frog gig might. I have used the frog gig for 1.5-2 pound fish successfully. If you are going for bait fish below 1 pound, just use a net IMO, YMMV

 

I use rotting fish or squirrel guts in my crawdad traps.

Have you ever tried a Hawaiian sling/spear. Used one years ago and they really put food on the table.

Does anyone ever consider electrofishing?

 

Fishing gear is something I have in abundance! I love fishing and eating fish. In Alaska we can subsistence harvest, and have various dip nets and some set nets as well. Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance this year to use any of them. I think this was the first year in 50 plus years that I didn’t have the time to fish. Typically I would put away 100 plus salmon and a few hundred pounds of Halibuts/rock fish each summer.

 

I have considered tracking down a high quality megger for that purpose. They are pretty heavy though.

 

My fishing equipment, and my fishing skills are just a hair above my foraging for wild edibles skills. I do have some equipment. I can bait a hook, and I have caught fish. Whether or not I could provide for my family is another kettle of fish (pun completely intended). It is on my list as a skill that needs to be improved.

 

If I were in your situation, I would just raise my own fish. Catfish, Tilapia or Carp. Use Aquaponics for a semienclosed ecosystem that is almost self supporting. I like catfish because they are "waste disposal" fish. My plan would be catfish fertilize duckweed which feed my rabbits and/or birds the guts of which feed my catfish. Something like that.

it would take a big river but in a book called Alaskan Handbook there is instruction on making a fish wheel. I have often wondered how well a scaled down fish wheel would work in a small river. Would need a run of fish for sure.

 

Then you have your dynamite fishing ...

 

we have a sucker run and salmon run. Our rivers are not all that wide maybe 100 feet, probably more like 50feet. Nothing like the Yukon.

 

If you got salmon. You have food! Even the old timers sometimes made smaller fish wheels. Whatever works!

SOL: We had considered it when we had the pond in the back yard. Catfish would be my choice. Talking to friends that had similar arrangements they just kept the raccoons fat. Every night the raccoons would raid the pond and eat the fish. They gave up trying to restock. It was an exercise in futility.

I have this on very good authority (Ralston Purina). The catfish has the highest yield of any animal that is raised. So they say, one pound of feed will put one pound of meat on a catfish.

 

Why not fence the pond and also kill the raccoons. Eat the raccoons and the fish.

 

I'm not sure what kind of fence would keep them out. I have watched them get into and out of some amazing places. While we are close to the Ozarks we haven't resorted to the Clampett menu just yet. Catfish I really like. Raccoon, I'm not so sure. Someday maybe.

Ignore their price, it is much cheaper in Publix and WalMart.

 

An electric fence at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 inches from the ground. Fold a strip of aluminum foil (1" x 4") over the 12" strand of wire and pour some honey on some and sardine juice on others. They learn fast.

trap the coons and hang them over the pond. the maggots will drop into the water and feed the fish or eat the coons. of course while it's fresh.

 

Eat the edible parts and let the rest generate maggots/fish food.

 

for sure, throw the misc in a wire basket and the maggots can drop from that.

 

All great ideas I'm sure, but the pond got converted into a see-ment fountain. Only good for the birds now, which we thoroughly enjoy.

If the tines are sharp and the thrust is fast they will penetrate. They only need to go in an inch or so to get the barbs embedded.

i really love fishing. I have about 20 rods. everything from ultra lite to musky rods, I have three full tackle boxes full , one is spoons etc, another is crank baits and plugs, and the last one is
jigs , but there is also another just for trout in the spring with flashers . I also had a full kit
for ice fishing that had twenty tip ups, power auger , spoon. gaff ice fishing spoons snow fleas etc but i sold it because the province passed a law making live minnows illegal . You can use frozen minnows but it is not the same. when one freshens up the live bait there are alsorts
of hits right after .

 

"NO".........It is a Federal Gift.......bestowed on anyone who lives in "SOME" parts of Alaska. Has nothing to do with race, color, sex, how much money you earn. Only the exact spot where you live. Generally you could say "Small Pockets" of rural land.

I tell new Alaskans looking for property, they should give locations with Federal Subsistence Rights, some amount of priority.
