From the HK protesters' point of view, the PRC is nibbling away at their freedoms granted by their former British rulers. Alex Lo, despite his high-sounding appeals to Rousseau and Hobbes, is in effect telling the people of HK to give up some of their rights to avoid a serious crackdown later.

Whether this is right or (dare I say it? pragmatic) is up to the people of HK, but I can't help but consider the parallels of this imbroglio to the 2nd Amendment supporters here in the US who don't like the idea of giving up some of their rights to a central government in return for what they see at best would be a little respite before the hammer drops.

"... giving up some of their rights ..." is on par with, "May I have a little bit of sex with your wife?"

    Good afternoon Duncan,

Sidebar: Still puzzled by non-US author re Civil War. Garabaldi, Mazzini, Marx ??? Still spending time on this.
    ....................
    ....................

The HK protesters cannot accept change.

Soon we will have a new definition of who is a citizen of HK. I'm hearing that there is an accelerated move on establishing and developing the Pearl River Delta. This plan takes 11 cities, HK, Macao, Guangzhu (old name "Canton" city [ not Canton Province]) and those 8 inside/near this triangle creating an enterprise zone. Housing will be available and affordable. Jobs will be provided, All the etc. This depletes current HK citizenry ranks less the finance sector and hospitality trades-restaurants, hotels.

    ....................

Must check the Asian novelists. Maybe some wrote about the US Civil War.

Let's cut to the chase, Hong Kong is going to be plundered and ravished.

    Might makes right.

    Good afternoon Old Geezer,

    Yes, indeed, might makes right.

The plunder and ravishing must be refined as to how the terms will fit into the HK situation.

HK is China's financial window to the world. The world's 2nd largest economy won't close down the money cow.

I am sure by now all protesters, less perhaps young children ,are identified. There weren't that many arrests, at least as reported. During the 1968 Baltimore riots about twice as many arrests occurred. Time will tell disposition of key rioters.

As China was zeroing in on Hong Kong, the Triads started moving to cities such as Vancouver British Columbia. Of course, their civilized fellow citizens of Hong Kong are also trying to escape the Chinese rape.

It's always been a dynamite place to launder money, however now that the Chinese Army is taking control of Hong Kong, the Triad members themselves are headed to Canada. They already have properties in Vancouver, so it's kind'a in-your-face as to what to do to not get imprisoned or shot dead by the Communist Chinese.

"More sophisticated groups are organized by senior triad leaders from Hong Kong to import heroin from southeast Asia through Vancouver and western Canada. The triads are the Chinese version of the Mafia, especially in their hierarchy and global networks and reach."

I understand the protesters / rioters points but they are about a 70 years too late. The leaders of these groups will start to disappear. It does not matter is they are right or wrong, they will be defeated. They are not the "French Resistance" and no major countries are working with them. In a nation where life is only valued by the person about to lose it, a subversive group has no chance of winning out over a determined government. This is already a lost cause, the MSM is not even bothering to toss in updates.

Red China is an apocalyptic galloping melanoma eating into the soul of all humanity. China should be treated as such. Arm its enemies. Deny it nutrition.

Automate factories here in America. Hire Americans to run/program the automation equipment -- can be done, I've been present where this has been done, aided and abetted the process. Bring industry back home.

We need to close the border, stop immigration except for those that can prove they have a value to America. Start educating out kids in something worth while, No more social art and basket weaving degrees but actual science, math, mechanical. Base tuition cost, on market value. If the degree's lead to low paying jobs, then the tuition cost is a percentage of that income base. Liberal Arts degrees would be just about free. Want to bet the schools would shift to more value added courses? End the "Free Lunch" programs and watch how fast the jobs get taken. Establish a terminal "3 Strike " law and watch how fast the crime rate drops. There are lots of things we can do but we will have to hit bottom before the public is willing to take these steps. Probably during the "Rebuilding " phase after the shtf event.

    Good morning Varuna,

What are not opinion pieces ?

The Straits Times and NCNA and all the rest produce opinions.

Even the Asian Wall Street Journal is selective in their "objective" reports.

Good point there, basically all journalistic product is a form of opinion piece. However I'm more concerned in HOW they framing their narrative. TBH I typically read Straits Times and CNA for typical day to day news of South East Asia & East Asia region, but that mostly because they were in English and their narrative still have bearing to typical day-to-day reality of life in the region.

BTW this is what I typically read in daily basis nowadays (notice all those shortcut). But obviously they merely supplementary to the ground source, or in some cases my only sources for places where I have no local / ground source.

    Good morning Varuna,

Sidebar: Life is too short. Consider minimizing gaming.

If Bloomberg Asia is mirrors the Bloomberg programs here, we must adopt Dante's advice: "Abandon hope".

My criteria for pubs is availability. The Financial Times is no longer available around here. In Asia, I'll read the International Herald Tribune only because it's available. Otherwise I would not use that rag for saddle-soaping boots. I listen to BBC because of both the availability and I like the chimes they use.

Two magazines no longer around kept me occupied even though they were only light-reading: Far Eastern Economic Report and Asia Week.

In a couple of cities I could get London's TIMES.

I would NEVER travel with a lap top or smart phone or related device with storage.

The Brits have the best gossip pubs and the Japanese have the best adult-type comic books.

I actually don't exactly know what's going down in Hong Kong other then some people wanting freedom and China being the communist pricks they are. But when I saw some protesters on Twitter sing our National Anthem, I was like, dammit! I want Hong Kong food, not Chinese food anymore.

I mean, when you see another country's people sing your anthem, that's right in the feels. Unreal.

I see a lot of tweets lately from Marsha Blackburn about how we must help Hong Kong. One wonders if we will get on China's bad side or do something in a no escalation way. But I'm pretty damn sure that involves many other countries to be on our (U.S.) side.

Social contract! I've been trying to remember that phrase for a very long time. Now I'm going to drill it into my head. I saw it mentioned in the above article.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

I'm trying to make a list of China's enemies.

    1. Japan ... Is Japan a steadfast ally of the US ?
    2. S. Korea ... They are fading from the scene: negative population growth.
    3. ?

What purpose would US factories have ? The US produces more than the US national economy needs/buys. Foreign nations will only purchase manufactured good with their local labor content and some of their locally-produced manufactured content.

The US priced ourselves out of the world marketplace. Our weakness is not the lack of competitive involves ....... that's only the manifestation of the existential problem. We have a society whereas the public sector absorbs too much wealth from the domestic private sector. Jimmy Hoffa can explain this. General Maxwell Taylor can explain this. All the tenured professors can explain this. The career politicians can explain this. The National Association of Counties can explain this.

In current events, the former US Ambassador to Ukraine - might - be able to explain this. How do you say "sinecure" auf Georgetown, D.C. English ?!

    Good morning F-22,

HKers have freedom. The HK protesters really seek economic opportunities.

Deal with the issues as you see/read about them. Avoid the national songs. Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh frequently mentioned the name Thomas Jefferson - as if this helped any cause.

Social contract was once used in the US. Today, with national health care a major campaign theme for the next Presidential election, review the US military's suicide cases. They are up while the social contract is down.

Admittedly, not familiar with Marsha Blackburn.

I've read that Japan also has a negative population growth. Or at least native Japanese are being weeded out.

    Good morning F-22,

Yes, Japan also has negative population growth but S. Korea is worst.

When traveling on Japanese carrier, JAL or ANA, unless first class, usually all flight attendants are NOT ethnic-Japanese. Japan has a shortage of ethnic-Japanese workers coupled to a large and growing retirement population.

I can guess my view of Marsha Blackburn has been eclipsed by Sen Lemar Alexander. I know Sen Blackburn is an ultra-conservative Republican and 100% pro-Trump. Of course, even any percentage of anything is better than Tennessee's Algore.

You can vote your way into communism but you have to shoot your way out. Poor Hong Kong didn't even get to vote.
