    Good afternoon all,

    Per ...

That section of Berkeley with 67% of population deemed poor might indicate that the nearby institute of lower education is draining away too much capital.

The entire SFO metro area is not a low tax place.

Why not use the "Share Bear" program ? Let some of those around these poverty lines teach at UC Berkeley for half cost of current instructor. The current instructor can be used for housing stock repair in neighborhood (No electrical work or sawing anything, for safety's sake !)

Had to laugh, San Jose ( SFO Bay Area) Police Department recruiters showed up at my son's graduating class. One of the student asked about cost of living, recruiter failed to respond. That is how high the cost of living in the SFO Bay Area is.

Just curious, how does the SFO area minimum wage fare? In term of Purchasing Power Parity what can be bought locally with minimum wage there?

Where I live the minimum wage is around $1.7/hour which is extremely low from nominal (USD) standpoint, however from Purchasing Power Parity the minimum wage is extremely generous (a lot could be bought with that amount of money locally here)

Economics 101 -- Labor cost is the top driving factor on prices (government taxes Number 2). The higher labor costs drive up the cost of everything, so it has a negative effect. The hamburger you bought for $4.00 dollars now cost you $6.00. The rent you paid is now more expensive due to higher maintenance and management costs. It is the middle class that always pays the highest price. They earn above minimum wage but the employers fail to keep up with prices increases. Did the minimum wage increase improve the poor, not really, the price increases wiped out the benefit but actually hurt the middle class.

    Good morning Varuna,

There are various levels of minimum wage levels. because the area is from San Francisco to San Jose, 2 different cities. I believe next month, Jan 2020, there will be a state level that is higher than today - for those on a formal payroll.

Minimum wage pay can purchase little because the P3 is being used in a high cost area.

The little good news to all this is that the employee on minimum wage is eligible for various "in-kind" public sector economic benefits such as subsidized apartments, food stamps, "free" health care, ... A single mother who is employed at the minimum wage level is also eligible for free or reduced cost child care where her child/children are dropped off when she is at work. Aforesaid describes hopelessness if person coherent.

    ......

A few realize that the best or only solution is to leave this expensive area. A near parallel example is currently occurring in Hong Kong.

San Francisco used to be a beautiful place. Also once beautiful was Yalta, Ukraine, Salisbury, Rhodesia, Beirut, Lebanon, ...

Does minimum wage get income tax discount there? Where I live even with minimum wage I still being punished by 15% income tax :( I mean poor people like me ought to entitled for more gov't benefits. Although I could always ask my tax team to lower my taxable income, doing so would rise suspicion. So far I always keep my taxable income at minimum wage level.

    Good morning Varuna,

I can't clearly reply to your question because our "system" is a mess.

There are many government jurisdictions with taxing authority and exemption authority and all this is not "organized" nor properly administered.
