    Good afternoon all,

Had just read an article about pain with a couple of very interesting points.

Can't link it here because the New York Times requires a registration and I'm not signed up. H'ever, it's

"The Pain You Feel Is Real, And It's All In Your Head. That's Why It's Treatable." by Austin Frakt, Tuesday, 3 December 19.

    Three excerpts:

"If something in the mind - fear - can make pain worse,.."

",..pain can be lessened when we feel safe."

"Love, like safety, can also ease pain. ... ... that pain is reduced when partners hold hands."

Hopefully so here can access article and it proves of value.

I haven't read the article, but from the 3 comments you quoted above, I believe the author is full of bull sh!t! Much pain can be controlled by your mind. I've done it for years.

You can learn to turn pain to an emotion. Anger is the easiest to use and has the most real world potential. I was taught to turn pain to anger. Turn anger to action and action to accomplishment. I've used that to deal with cuts, gun shots, blast injuries and many more. It worked for all of those but those are a pain that naturally ends with healing.

Nerve pain is like nothing else you can experience. When I got my spine injured I found out what true pain is. Not even morphine can control that pain. Nerve pain can't even be controlled by many anesthesia's according to my surgeon. I've tried all kinds of pain treatments, ie. meds, electric shock, physical therapy, compression therapy, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, etc. I've wanted to try rubber mallet therapy but the wife won't hit me hard enough.

Just sayin. Not all pain is equal.

    Good morning Dale,

Changed optic pressure, dental/head injury pain ?

Going into shock eliminates the pain with the required "However".

I don't know about the newer "induced coma" methods.

P, I believe those are both forms of nerve pain. I know the dental one is. Had several rotten teeth as a kid and dad took me to a horse doctor that pulled the teeth before the lidocaine ever started to work. He stuck the needle in, wrapped his free arm around your neck, stuck in the pliers and ripped them out. That was a unique experience in pain. The best part was when my dad (who had called me a wimp when I complained) got his pulled and came out swearing and cussing the dentist. I think I was 13 at the time.

Never had that type of eye pain but with the nerve connection so close to the brain. The eyes are extremely sensitive and as much as any outside pressure can cause severe pain, I'm sure internal pressure can drive a person crazy.

Pain is just an alarm that is telling you what something is wrong so that you will either stop doing whatever is causing the pain or treat the problem. There are several diseases that turn off the ability to feel pain and the occasional child born without this ability. In every case, the results are VERY bad. diabetics lose their feet because one of the effects of diabetes is a loss of feeling in the feet. you get some tiny injury and don't feel it and it goes septic. You either lose the infected appendage or DIE. Lepracy has the same problem with the extremities.

In the end, what we call pain is all in the mind. It is the bell and not the injury. The worst pain that I have ever had was sciatica. It felt like there was a beaver inside my leg trying to chew his way out through my shin bones!!! That was on the good days. the bad days it felt like I had stepped into a vat of boiling grease and was deep-frying my entire leg. All of this was nerve related and did not represent any real injury to the areas in pain. Pain medicines other than the ones strong enough to knock me out offered me little to no relief.

The various doctors tried all sorts of things. Several wanted to do surgery but I refused that. If they weren't sure that I actually had a back problem then they weren't going to mess with it. I watched them play that game with my dad and wasn't going there. Guess what? I learned to live with it. It wasn't always pleasant but over time I got so I had some control over it.

The cool thing in my case is that eventually the cause was found. It was NOT my back. Three coddle epidurals that did nothing were all that I allowed them to do to my back. My problem was in my left hip joint. When it was replaced the pain was gone and has never come back.

I spent almost 5 years learning how to deal with pain. I actually got VERY good at it. I actually had to beware of going too far and not ignore real injuries. I still have to watch out for that and drive my Doctor crazy. I walked on a broken foot for a month before I went in and had it X-rayed. It was not displaced and the healing had started and was well along so I refused treatment or drugs. I had no interest in wearing a cast for a month or two.

I have always had a certain ability to ignore pain. I think that this is like a lot of things. some people are fast runners and others just are not. Did you know that pain can become addictive??? It is something like the other adrenalin junkies. The pain causes a release of all sorts of things into your bloodstream that make you 7 feet tall and armor-plated. If you do this enough you start to sort of like that feeling. It is all tied up with your fear, fight or flight system.

There are methods that will allow you to sort of turn down the volume and eventually almost turn chronic pain off. It involves a certain way of entering into a kind of trance state to deal with the pain. They will give you a machine that measures your brain waves and when you bring the delta waves, I think, up to a certain point it signals that you are there. Over time you learn how to do this without the machine to monitor you and when the pain becomes a problem you take a few minutes to cope with it. Over time you just start doing this and eventually it is a thoughtless thing like riding a bicycle. The gave a friend of mine back his life. Where I refused to let them do the surgeries he went all the way down that road and ended up in constant pain with no further surgery possible at that time. I told him about this place in Houston that did this sort of pain therapy and he went there. Basically they taught him to do what I seemed to have some natural ability to do.

If you are in constant pain you need to keep hunting for a solution. what works for one person may not work for the next but if you keep looking you stand a good chance of finding something that ill work for you.

I've had good luck ignoring pain. The problem is that it becomes tiring after a time. When I feel exhausted I search my body for the problem and then I feel the pain. I rest a bit and then go back to my chores.

When using drugs learn to titrate them. Pain drugs work by matching up to the pain receptors in your body. The more closely the drug matches your pain receptors the stronger and more effective it is. Too little drug and not all the pain receptors are filled. Too much drug and you have unused drug floating around your system which makes you high. This is the situation that can make you addicted. I try to keep my drugs at a level where most, but not all, of the pain goes away. this keeps me functional with minimal pain and no feelings of having my head in a bag of cotton balls.

Nearly all of the pain pills that I tried only seemed to make me feel stupid and still in pain. I just don't even accept them anymore. For me the dulling of my mental capabilities makes me seem to be a lot more aware of pain where if my mind is clear I can sort of tune it out. I have a lot of problems with a lot of drugs not having the right effect on me. I had a Doctor change one of my medicines not long ago and the new drug KOed me for almost three days. They tried it at a much lower dose and it still knocked me out.

I have the reverse problem. Pain meds (including morphine and opioids) , don't work on me at normal dosages. It won't even make me drowsy. Doesn't work that well at elevated dosages. The Dr. can't give a higher dose for fear of it stopping my breathing and heart. Most days I'm not that wild about that idea either.

pain means there is something wrong, trouble is most pharmaceutical drugs only deal with the symptom not the cause, so they may stop the pain but don't cure the reason for the pain.
so the pain will probably come back again.

Wolf, I just went through two surgeries to remove my pain for one to three years. It knocked it down about 50%. Another doc put me on a drug, for a different condition, that doubled my pain so basically I'm back where I started. Not all medical problems are fixable. If they were nobody would ever die. I don't like drugs and I don't think they are a good answer but sometimes they are the best available answer.

I prefer herbal/natural medicine, pharmaceutical drugs have too many side effects, I don't take any drugs if I can avoid it.
taking a pain killer for a mild headache is one thing, but if the pain keeps returning then there is something more serious that needs sorting out.
we cannot expect to survive SHTF if our health isn't up to normal life now, if we haven't got our health there is no point in pretending. we are only kidding ourselves.

Opioids are from a natural substance as are many others. Everything entering the body has a side effect, it's just a matter of choosing meds with a minimum negative side effect that helps what is needed.
I have learned the hard way that not every injury will completely heal. Not being "normal" doesn't mean you can't overcome whatever a SHTF throws at you. That depends on what's in your mind. Like the man said, "Where your mind will lead, your ass will follow!".

once TSHTF drugs wont last very long, pharmacies will be trashed by the druggies, the stock of drugs anyone has in their home is all they will have and once they are used up there will be no more.
like I said if someone dosent have their full health before SHTF hits its unlikely they will be able to do all the things that will need to be done post SHTF.
