Since I started my Christian walk, I have literally come to reckon with dark powers which attack a person in the dream or when one is half asleep. Sometime ago, I visualized a child sitting suddenly on my chest and it was so heavy. I have had my hands held by an invisible powerful force and many other things I can't list here. When I was a condescending secularist, I never or rarely had these encounters. I have come to learn that these demonic powers can manifest physically and many people have come to reckon with them. Literally. As for my case, shouting the 'Blood of Jesus' clears the apparitions fast. I think the spiritual realm is more real than the average human being dares to accept.

What you describe sounds like sleep paralysis. Having experienced it myself on a few occasions, I know how disturbing it can be. I don't ascribe any supernatural agency to the experience, though many people report an malevolent presence (e.g., a demon, a hag, a specter, etc.) during the event. If you continue to experience said, you might want to see a doctor about possible sleep disorders.

Hallucinating about bad things especially about demons can indeed happen while sleep deprived.
Now I do think that demons exist but that they rather scare us than can physically hurt us.
Demons are not part of our dimension of the world. They only appear in certain times in our lives and we encounter them in many different forms.
I have lived in spooky places before where I would see dark red eyes and felt it had a resemblance of devil's eyes. I have a friend who also seen a demon in her son's room before that scared her but she could not express how she felt in front of her four year-old son.
I find most people do not believe you if you tell them about the existence or your encounters with demons.
And the only thing I think can actually help is to not freak out, to close your eyes and pray really hard for it to go away and most of the time it does....
When it comes to surviving a demonic attack, the only scenario I could think about where this could happen is in the wilderness and while not having enough rest because you keep thinking you hear or see stuff. That is when you might think a demon wants to attack you.
When you are out there trying to survive you just have to be prepared for anything really....

While I do believe that there are supernatural entities, as CivilDefense says, the episode sounds like sleep paralysis (which may or may not be tied in with some kind of inexplicable phenomenon). It's a really frightening thing. I get it sometimes and it throws me into an anxiety attack.
But I have to say, I think shouting, "Blood of Jesus!" will scare any would-be attacker away lol.

I'm sorry to say, but this sounds like more of a case of sleep paralysis and hallucinations than any demonic encounters. Aside from the fact that I don't believe in demonic encounters, I think it's very unlikely for anything to happen to you. I'm not sure how to avoid sleep paralysis, but I know the symptoms. Being unable to move, while still in a dream like state, is typically how it happens. People say some of the scariest things they have experience, happen to them in that state. It's basically like having realistic nightmares, while being unable to move. It helped you find your faith, more power too you. I don't think you should make assumptions based on something that can be scientifically explained though.

I have experienced this happening more than once whilst asleep during the daytime where I am aware that I am trying to awaken and get up but it seemed like something was holding me down. However, I eventually forced myself out of it but I did become alarmed because of what happened because I surmised it wasn't anything spiritual. I didn't know what to term it as all I know it was I drunk.

I heard the story of a man who moved into a house which was allegedly "haunted." He lived there for a few months without incident and then [according to the stories] ghosts started attacking him. He had to flee one night and didn't even go back for his stuff. Whether the story was true or not I don't know but when you are attacked by something you can't see then maybe if it's defending it's "territory" then you need to get away.

If you were watching something like horror movies before you went to sleep that could be the problem. I believe that demons are real, but can't attack you without a way to get onto your life. If you watch pornography, dabble in witch craft or play with Quija boards these could be portals for demons to come into your life. Rebuking these evil spirits in the name of Jesus is a start, sometimes you have to pray and fast for the ones that won't leave. If your living in any kind of sin you have to stop, this is one way they can have access to you.

The phenomenon has little to do with sleep paralysis. This is an overused and default term used to consign anything supernatural when the inferior scientific explanation cannot explain it. I am a scientist and I can say that its subordinate to spirituality. Some of the dreams I have had have actually materialized in real life. Believe it or not. President JF Kennedy dreamt of a coffin in the White House and people wailing outside. He narrated this to his wife but being naive in matters spiritual, he failed to cancel it. Two days later, he was mowed down by an assassins bullet. There is nothing about the overused cliche of sleep paralysis here since the dream manifested physically in broad daylight. I am not deluded, some of these things manifest literally.

I was very skeptical of spirits and apparitions in my youth but I have seen enough evidence over the years to lean on the side supporting the presence of incorporeal (or spiritual) beings. The great German philosopher separated our human experiences into the phenomena (how we view an object as interpreted by our senses) and noumena (what the object actually is). Our senses are certainly limited and, as such, some people may be more perceptive towards what could be considered a spiritual encounter. Frankly, the evidence put forth for NDE (near-death experiences) shows that there is a state of consciousness that can exist outside our corporeal body so it isn't much of a leap to having an encounter with a 'spirit'.

Could you point to some solid evidence? Concerning the whole "ghost" business, many human cultures have myths about disembodied spirits, yet no one in the age of science and pervasive technology can find any such evidence. And I'm not talking about the pseudoscientific blather they run on television. I'm talking about solid science published in peer-reviewed journals.

I cannot speak directly to your experience as I wasn't the one who had the encounter but most non believers would come up with other explanations. They even tried to explain the story of Paul in a secular way. I have never really associated my similar encounters with demonic forces but I know they are real and they can cause more harm to the human body than many of us are willing to accept. Sometimes things are going on in our bodies and minds that doctors themselves cant even explain but a strong willed Christian could sense so much and make so much of the situation. The spiritual can heal more than a doctor.

The thing about demons is that they are just like automobiles--an utterly preposterous idea until you actually encounter one.

(I swear to God , Martha--it just whizzed past me faster than any horse I ever seen, and there was six people inside it! I have proof--here's the beer can they threw at me!)

Of course, some things are best unencountered. Like IRS Agents and, uh...demons!

It is real. Instead of the "blood of Jesus" you can also shout "confess that Jesus came in the flesh!" If they're legitimate spirits from God, they'll say it; if demons they'll run like crazy. Get some anointing oil (olive oil that's been prayed over), wet your finger with it and put it on your windows, outside doors and large mirrors. That will keep them out.

This is pretty much the standard experience that you have with Sleep Paralysis. You are paralized and can only move your eyes. You can't even make a noise or take a deep breath and feel like you are smothering. On the edge of your vision, there is SOMETHING there that you can't quite see except for the impression of big evil eyes looking at you. You have a feeling of horror and are helpless. All you can do is lay there trying to move or scream but frozen in terror.

This is evidently in part a primitive "memory" that all people have somewhere in their genes because all over the world the experience is, in general, the same. When you sleep your brain is unhooked mostly from your body otherwise if you were running in your dreams you would be running in your bed. Normally this unhooks instantly when you wake up. Sleep paralysis happens when you rise to awareness still in the locked up dream state.

If you don't know what this is it is massively easy to misinterpret your experience. Even when you know about this it doesn't seem to help you until you can rise out of the "dream". Once you awake fully you can realize that it was just a sort of bad dream. If you don't know about this then you stay pretty shook up and have a hard time figuring out what happened.

When I was younger I had this experience several times. It was better once I understood what it was but that doesn't make it any better while it is going on.

As far as demons are concerned I think that within all people there is the potential for evil, for lack of a better word. Most people keep these urges contained. To me, the demon thing is most often just a version of the devil made me do it used as an excuse for bad behavior.

It is in that "most often" that I'm uncertain. I have seen things that I can't explain and have known people that seemed to just one day change into someone so vastly different that I have no explanation for the change. Did they just suddenly stop resisting or did something nudge them over the line???

There are some women from Southern Appalachia "back in the day" who were dainty. Never met one. The women from the hollars who I knew had a larger set of nads than most non-"country" men ("city-slickers").

Demons....The 1/3 of the Angels that followed Lucifer and were cast out of Heaven by God. So, if Angels are real, so must Demons be real also.

Good and evil are real as displayed by human morality. Since morality is all that separates us from the animals, as humans have always made a distinction between the two. ie. Murder=Bad, Sharing = good. So must a human use there individual morality to decide what they believe.

As an individual, I have faith that there are Angels and Demons in this world. As a human, I have witnessed things that I can't explain with science. As an individual, my life's experiences (My frame of reference) led me to have faith in a man. A man known to the world as Jesus.

The concept of both good and evil, angels and demons are one and all a culturally defined thing. Just as an extreme example... Vlad Tepes...Also known as Vlad the Impaler, Vlad son of Dracul and just plain old Dracula. He was made famous to the rest of the world by the FICTION novel written by Bram Stoker titled "Dracula". We all know about him and if there has ever been someone that was truly evil he might be NUMBER ONE... Or would he be?

The people of his nation, Romania, revered him as the savior of their nation. He was the defender of the Christian Orthodox Church against the Turk Islamic invaders. He was loved by his people and hated by his enemies. the Dracul part that has become Dracula wasn't his name. It was the name of a religious order that both he and his father were members of. dracul is DRAGON and the Catholic "dragons" or Knights Dracul was an order similar to the more famous Knights Templers. Vlad wasn't just a hero to his people. He was also greatly appreciated and commended by the Pope and the Christian kings of Europe.

A lot of things are like this. We NOW look at slavery with a certain horror and are trying to rewrite history to make all of our founding fathers into monsters because they were almost universally slave owners. Give it another generation or two and the liberals will have our grandkids and Great grandkids despising our founders. You CAN'T judge people in the past by the same rules that you were raised in or with and have a real understanding of the people or the history of that time.

Even our number one Demon has a rather interesting history. Lucifer, the word that became the name means light giver. "Lucifer" is just the Latin name of a previous hero of the story. Prometheus predated the Jewish story of man's history but the tale is very similar. Prometheus lived in the home of the gods but felt sorry for the humans that had no way to light the night or warm themselves. The big god forbade them that ability but Prometheus went down to them and gave them the gift of fire. For this Promethias was cast out and chained to the earth on the side of a mountain where every day he was torn apart by the birds but he would heal every night. Both Prometheus and Lucifer got in big trouble with their boss god for bringing knowledge to the people. both were cast out of the home of the gods and both were forever tied down to earth... one version was seen as a hero while the jews turned this act into the ultimate evil.

I'm not sure that both stories might not be true versions of some action in the past that was remembered and then told over and over and changed by each people to fit their world view. I suspect that the "demons" of the word may indeed exist but are more natural in their being than supernatural. Rabies, as seen by a primitive people, would look very much like a "demon" possession. Many of the genuine mental illnesses are still seen as possible "demon" possession. The Catholic church is doing more and more exorcisms. they have even opened their "schools" for training to do this to Ordained ministers other than Catholics.

When people are afraid they need something that they can fight. Unfortunately not everything that is bad has a bad person or thing that is the cause. Sometimes it is just a case of $hi+ happens. People hate being helpless and it is a lot easier for them to sort of make up something to blame and just accept bad things happen. We LOVE to make SCAPE GOATS to blame bad things on and I suspect that MOST "demons" come about in this fashion.

Now to deal with that MOST in the sentence above. Most, leaves a gap where there is a lot of questions and not many solid answers. just as a more primitive people could imagine that diseases were caused by "demons" because they couldn't imagine tiny invisible bacteria and viruses might we even now be doing much the same over some other currently unexplained mysterious phenomenon? What if there ARE things out there that can influence people's actions. They might not be cast-offs from heaven any more than the germs were but they might be just as real.

I leave this small window open for one simple reason... I have seen and experienced things that I can NOT explain. It is like the UFO thing. Once you see one up close and personal you have a real problem deciding what it is while others will choose to say that you couldn't have seen something like that...but you DID. In the end, I don't know if there are demons out there that attack people. If they exist I STILL don't know what they are or where they came from. For NOW, I choose to keep an open mind...

I just found out about that, thanks for sharing it.
IMO based upon etymology alone there is strong indication that both Lucifer & Prometheus are the same mythological figure albeit with different story narrative.

Blaming supernatural aspect actually happen to me few months back, albeit not as primitive as what you had stated.

Long story short, I live at 2 places in the same city and both of them are rather on the spooky side. I'm no stranger to supernatural world, however in most cases I could always chase down something and determine with confidence that it was something that could be scientifically explained (usually animals or natural phenomena), however there is always few exceptions where I'm confident that something was supernatural in nature. Few months ago, both my physical & mental health was deteriorating to the point I was experiencing hallucination although luckily my rational mind managed to kick in to keep me sane and seek medical attention. However after I was visited by few close friend whom themselves have familiarity with supernatural world notice strong negative energy around my place coming from let just say 2 demonic beings whose under job contract. Already knowing the nature of those negative energy since the day I first live here I normally ignore those negative energy, however ignoring it also require equally strong will power / mental strength of which at the time I barely able to muster (even today I'm still recovering). So I use holistic approach by "fencing" my dwelling and also seek medical & psychological attention / therapy. Whether or not the positive result is due to the medical treatment or just placebo effect from my fencing or even something supernatural at work I really don't know, but as long it work with positive result I'm up for it.

Arthur C. Clark said that any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. To someone that had never seen on or heard of such would see a flashlight as a magic wand of sorts. This is sort of how the paranormal stuff is. Things that we can't even begin to understand at this time get tossed into the paranormal can. Over time some are pulled out dusted off and placed on the shelf as understood. Mental illness like schizophrenia is not demon possession. Diseases like rabies aren't something blamed on evil spirits anymore. Eclipses haven't been scary for a long time and the movement of the stars and planets are now understood.

I suspect that in the future most of the things now in the paranormal can including things like Bigfoot, UFOs and some peoples seeming ability to do amazing things both physical and mental will be explained and understood and put on the shelf along with the other things that we now understand and don't have to blame it on invisible beings.

I don't really believe in the devil/satan but I do believe in a creative force and that there may be unseen intelligent forces out there that influence people both good and bad. God or gods??? I don't know that this is what we are dealing with. A being or people that are sufficiently more intelligent and with abilities beyond our imagining might well be indistinguishable from gods.

Many years ago, right after I got married, the misses and I lived in a house that I would classify as paranormal or weird. Examples,

    1. When we were moving in my mother in law got burned on the electric stove top (blistered type bad). The burner was hot enough to ignite paper. The wife yelled for me to come and unplug it since it must have a short circuit. I looked behind the stove and it was already unplugged. I have NO explanation.

    2. Same house, the week we moved in, we occasionally heard the back screen door slam. Would get up to go check it and the door was latched shut. It wouldn't budge. It did this many times over the next 6 months. Always latched. I have NO explanation.

    3. The TV (which I had owned for 3 years) and was the old push/pull knob on/off type Television with the turn knob channel turner. That TV which had never had any problems, started turning itself on or off at random times of the night. It would also change channel while we were watching at night. After we moved, it had no issue ever again until we got rid of it 4 years latter. I have NO explanations.

    4. There was an old style big box TV in the place when we moved in. It didn't want to work right so we unplugged it and moved it out of the way to use as a table. Left it unplugged of course. 4 different times that TV came on, loud enough and bright enough to wake the wife and I. It was always still unplugged and it's cord wouldn't even reach an outlet. It went off every time when I walked toward it to turn it off. I have NO explanation.

The funny part was, the wife and I didn't think that much of any of this at the time. Young and in love and clueless.

If there are ghost and there was one there. It would have laughed itself to death a second time over us. Life can be weird some times.

I've seen things in dreams that came true in the future. These experiences count when you have told someone about what you saw in the dream, then show them the newspaper article describing the incident that happened a week after your dream. One time, my mom almost fainted. Her knees gave-out. I almost had to catch her (even though I had the newspaper in my left hand).

My wife has been known to avoid this and that when I have one of those lucid dreams. Oh, does she ever take my dreams seriously.

“I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.”
    – Max Planck

“Theology, philosophy, metaphysics, and quantum physics are merely ways for God to have his smart people believe in him”
    ― Jeremy Aldana

“The atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things or facts.”
    ― Werner Heisenberg

“In the world of the very small, where particle and wave aspects of reality are equally significant, things do not behave in any way that we can understand from our experience of the everyday world...all pictures are false, and there is no physical analogy we can make to understand what goes on inside atoms. Atoms behave like atoms, nothing else.”

I think that a part of the human mind operates on a "frequency" where the things in our world and our world are created and controlled. this is like the control circuit in a machine. A machine that is huge and powered by a huge current will nonetheless be controlled by a lower voltage little control circuit that actually does nothing but put a low voltage to a piece of metal and makes it a magnet. That little magnet will open or close contacts that power the motors and pumps. Even a huge nuclear reactor with all of its potential to make power is controlled by there weak low voltage controls.

I believe that the part of the mind that is on the control frequency is like the power on a control circuit. Unfortunately, we are mostly ill-prepared to do much on this level consciously. Some have a few odd small abilities but most seldom have much effect on things. Occasionally though someone will inadvertently get connected and cause all sorts of odd things. Thye a sort of like a little kid that is poking buttons and twisting knobs on a machine that he has no idea about. This seems to most happen around kids as they start into puberty and again with older people when their minds begin to slip slightly.

It seems that when this is done it may continue off and on long after the person that initiated it has gone. This is actually very common. Everyone has had the experience of having things disappear. You just KNOW that you put it someplace but it isn' there. You look all over for it. Sometimes you never find it and then some times you find it laying right out in the open someplace where it should have been easy to find. ??? we all mostly just write this sort of thing off as that you misplaced it. I generally laugh it off and blame it on the "gremlins" but sometimes I'm less sure that it is a joke.

Occasionally the problem becomes more open and well powered. This is a poltergeist activity and you will start to SEE things move and powered things function without the power. I honestly think that it is the same thing just that there was a lot more power in the initial point where it was started. I often wonder if we are somehow doing it to ourselves. Stress, anger or any strong feelings may somehow trip some switches.

It is something interesting to think about if nothing else...

That is really interesting perspective and quite plausible explanation.

Our brains are op-amps! I like it. A radio transmitter heterodynes the signal frequencies onto the carrier frequency, then the receiver cancels the carrier. Maybe our heads are FM radios and we have quantum ramp-detectors (?). Maybe we're not neurologically digital, maybe quantum scrambled eggs in our heads have Schrodinger's cat dead, alive, not feeling well, obese, thin, happy, sad, ...

I must have a different type of brain to everyone else then as I have never experienced anything mentioned by anyone else on this thread.

Lonewolf, I think that at least in my case what happened is that I had an experience at a very young age that set me to looking for answers. It also may have been because I have a certain heritage. My Grandfather was a water witch and along with being a blacksmith and farmer, he located water for people that wanted to dig wells. He must have been good because he was even hired by the local county and cities at times and did this sort of thing all his life into his 80s.

(Side note... He was also a musician and wrote music and sang with a rather well-known gospel quartet. I can play a radio or a record and probably couldn't find water in a swamp!)

People that walk in the woods see animals and people that don't will seldom see a deer. Maybe I see because I look. Even with that I still have only had a small handful of odd experiences in 66 years so it isn't like this stuff is popping up around every corner. How often have you walked alone in a graveyard at night? How many supposedly haunted places have you gone to at night and sought answers? Have you ever sat with a witches coven or gone to tent revival to watch a "faith" healer do his thing?

Nearly everything that I have checked or seen ended up with rather mundane explanations. Some I just never could prove were not paranormal but have serious doubts. I can watch a good stage magician and not be able to explain his tricks but still know that they are not real magic. And then there are the few things that defy any logical explanation that I can even imagine. Those are the things that keep me looking for answers and pondering ...

LW, you are not alone in never having experienced a supernatural phenomena. There a lot of ways to try and explain away these experiences that others believe that they've have had but you know what? I can't be bothered...I just lump the idea of demons into the same big bag with vampires, zombies and other assorted bogeymen. I then bite my tongue and let other people get on with believing whatever it is that makes them happy.

That's almost certainly enough of this forum for another month.

I had a very similar experience when living in the UK when I was around 17. Nearly exactly the same in fact. My mother hauled me off to a priest to be exorcised and I had to wear a cross. Neither helped. At the time, I was very stressed and sleep deprived as my mother had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The "episodes" came and went over the next few years. Sometimes I would go without any for a few weeks or months, then I would have them every night for a few days. Totally random. Then they settled down somewhat.

Some years later again, after the birth of my son who due to medical complications who was very premature the episodes started ramping up again. I then bit the bullet and went to see my GP. He suggested seeing a neurologist, which I did.

After tests involving electrodes glued to the head, I was diagnosed with sleep paralysis. I can't tell you what a relief it was to finally have a diagnosis, rather than wondering if these episodes were indeed something sinister to do with the some other forces. I was put on medication and that was the end of the episodes.

I stopped taking the medication after a year or two and noticed I only had episodes during times of extreme stress and anxiety.

Fast forward many years, now it is something I very rarely suffer from, and when I do, it's because I'm severely sleep deprived and stressed to the max.
