Professional Hacker Reveals How Car Industry Spies on Drivers

Automakers are reportedly spying on car owners by recording their every move, according to an experiment by a professional hacker and the Washington Post.

Tech columnist Geoffrey A. Fowler recently asked Jim Mason to hack into a car’s computer. Fowler has a Ph.D. in engineering and reconstructs car accidents via hacking, The Daily Wire reported.

    The article stated:

The Post used a 2017 Chevy Volt for its experiment and learned that the car collected a wide range of highly precise data ranging from the vehicles location to information about the driver’s cell phone, including call records — noting that many vehicles copy over personal data the moment that a smart phone is plugged into the vehicle.

The Post noted that the Chevy Volt did not inform drivers what information it was recording and did not make mention of it in the owner’s manual since there are no federal regulations protecting consumer’s privacy and data from automakers.

First, Mason hacked into the car’s infotainment center, as it was the easiest computer to use to gain physical access inside the vehicle. The experiment yielded interesting results once the computer was removed and connected to his laptop, Fowler wrote.

    He continued:

It was worth the trouble when Mason showed me my data. There on a map was the precise location where I’d driven to take apart the Chevy. There were my other destinations, like the hardware store I’d stopped at to buy some tape. Among the trove of data points were unique identifiers for my and Doug’s phones, and a detailed log of phone calls from the previous week. There was a long list of contacts, right down to people’s address, emails and even photos.

“As information privacy becomes increasingly scarce in the world of social media, even car companies have begun collecting massive amounts of data on their drivers,” wrote Breitbart News’s Lucas Nolan in January 2018.

“According to ABI research, there are currently 78 million cars on the road with an embedded cyber connection feature. Research firm Gartner expects that by 2021, 98 percent of cars sold in the U.S. and Europe will be data connected,” he stated.

In his recent column, Fowler urged potential car buyers to ask their dealership about the vehicle’s connected services and if it is possible to turn them off.

“Few offer an Internet ‘kill switch,’ but they may at least allow you turn off location tracking,” he concluded.

I have read about this before. About car manufacturers recording everything from what music you listen to, how you brake, where you go, basically anything and everything.

As I usually buy second hand cars I have not yet owned a car new enough to have this kind of connectivity. And I'm happy about that. Between Google and my cellphone it already feels like a creepy stalker follows one through life... no need to get the SUV or truck involved too!

    I don't own a smart-phone nor a smart-car. I own no electronic navigation system.

I worked for a major corporation, international. Back during the cold war, our communications were tracked by Ivan. Therefore we constantly put key intel-words in our petty emails. This way we flooded anyone intercepting our comm. Me, I'm old and useless. Let the government track me. Let them waste their time. I guess they'll just come and confiscate my lever action "assault rifles" of latter 1800's design.

Best "assault rifle" rounds for packs of rioters? Answer: Buckshot

Whenever in a gun shop and can't find anything? You can always buy some boxes of buckshot to keep the business afloat.

Post-SHTF, if the inferiors pop-off AK rounds your way, then you and your friends should answer them with your minute-of-angle "assault" scoped bolt-actions.

Post-SHTF, there will be no shortage of human dog packs, plus packs of actual dogs (4-legged variety; people won't be able to feed their dogs, so they'll turn them out; 1 of 10?, certainly 1 of 20, will survive due to re-acquisition of ferocity). Hogs and dogs gonna be, already are, a huge problem.

Humans going rabid in the cities will be fun for FEMA.

First goal of military powers during a war is to blind the satellites. No more bouncy-bouncy. EMP = throw your phones in the trash.

I am sure most of you guys are way more tech savy than me but will put this up as I find it a bit creepy . I have a relative that had a juvenile step daughter have a stranger pick her up one night outside her house and take her about 100 miles away to induct her into a life of prostitution . Her step mom by pinging the girls cell phone located the exact house she was held in right down to the address . The police was called to the house but after the adult resident denied the girl was there . The police left and informed the step mom the result . The step mom told the police no she is definitely inside that house . The police returned for the second time to the house . That time the residents admitted they had the girl . The juvenile was returned to the step mom . I do not have a smart phone , I do not do face book , and am thinking about growing a beard . ---- I could tell you guys about the C.I.A. guy that I know personally whose job is to listen in on our phone calls . He is a good guy so I don't want to reveal too much about him . Some of you may think they can't be listening to our phone calls " that would be illegal " . Think again I have first hand knowledge of the contrary .

Whether here or anywhere around the planet, Big Brother needs to be de-funded.
Did you hear that, Big Brother?! F.U. until you can't breathe! Coming world economic collapses will hopefully make you get a real job instead of the honor-less job you now hold. Go bomb terrorists; we already know who they are and where they are -- and nobody cares if they hide behind the skirts of women and children, maybe that pool of genetics needs to be cleaned anyway.

They could also hack into the phone cameras just in case haven't aware about it, and also could easily hacking into the phone encrypted storage. And yet I'm still EXTREMELY CONFIDENT in using smartphone for far more serious application. The main reason for this, is because I'm fully aware about the operational limit of the system including the attacker side, while the general public (except those of us who's in the related IT field) understand the limit. And the same factor also what keep article such as the one being posted by OP were being easily swallowed by general public by selling fear instead of educating regarding the operational limit.

If I get the money I'm building a kit car that is a natural gas/propane powered hybrid with another generator that runs diesel. You want something you have to do it yourself. Did I mention it will be in a hummer? :D

Well, if it has a hash tag # and not a pound sign, I guess it can use SMS Twitter messages. LOL!

Kids these days don't even know what a damn phone book is.

    Good morning all,

Didn't believe this was a new and shocking revelation.

The car's AMFM radio has features to listen in to voices in car.

Soon, the VIN and license plate will also be topside for drone surveillance.

Some "credit cards" with RFID labels are now remotely readable although believe only at a short distance.

my car is an old 15 year old 1200cc mpv(multi purpose vehicle) it is serviced once a year and has a new set of tyres once a year, that's it, I spend £20 on fuel every 10 days, its basic, no radio, no computer, it has central locking and electric windows, wife has the 1000cc model with a radio but no central locking and no electric windows.
they do us fine, when TSHTF and there is no fuel they will be used to block the drive to the house.

Just go buy an old beater-truck that has a plain old-fashion carburetor. Diesel engines shake the motor-mounts loose in regular pickups. Mechanic showed me a diesel pickup that had its radiator housing torn loose from its frame mounts, too the right front quarter-panel had come loose. A large diesel engine shakes; they're powerful and hard to balance.

    Concerning Hmmwv big toys:

The above place sells used; or if you already have the vehicle, they have the kits to make it safererer for times future ... or inner-city today.

Its about power and signal post processing (they are digital anyway). RFID card could be read from some distance away which is why its necessary to have RFID proof wallet (of which you can made yourself)

    Good morning Varuna,

This is good information. Thank you.

On my list of things to do is to "RFID-proof" my wallet. Currently I have an "evac" wallet that's waterproof and lanyard attachable.

Is it basic info and basic material to make a current wallet into one that is "RFID-protected" ?

Terima Kasih in advance. ("Thank you" from my phrase book published when Jakarta still spelled with a "D" - Djakarta.[ 1964 changed ?])

You on;y need to add cooper wire mesh sandwiched between the leather (Faraday cage). Such wallet is pretty damn cheap around here less than $20 (home industry) and its work as advertised. Although I do not use such wallet myself but that because I do not use any wallet whatsoever, but that just me being me.

    Thank you Varuna,

Will be looking for a cooper wire pouch.

I do use a wallet but not for money ... haven't seen any big folding money since Hillary became First Lady ... and only for all else, such as a credit card, addresses, and - surprise ! - mostly governmental cards such as Medicare card, Voter Registration card, ...

Hmmmmm…. Have kept my Dad's olde 1967 Chevy in my garage for years. Rebuilt the engine in it. Thinking I need to look into getting it ready to go back on the road. No computer. No electronic ignition....lots of floor room and trunk space.

Compared to todays plastic cars ….it is a tank.

Unfortunately the automotive industry will be lobbying to increase tax for older vehicle (that way you will be forced to buy new model) :p

Agree....this is also called "Herding." It is not called liberty and freedom.

This can be done with peoples homes to make room for Agenda 21 housing projects.

Forcing people to take second third and fourth place with their own property....in their own nation.

Ishmaelites at work....doing what they do best....herding people away from liberty and freedom.
