Hi. I know that some types of insects (such as grasshoppers), worms and scorpions include a very high level of protein in their flesh. Anyone who knows techniques to cook them?

I have been to Bangkok twice and in our last trip, we sampled the cooked insects being peddled in the street. Although I had my eyes closed when I swalloed a mouthful of insects, I'm sure there was scorpion, locusts (brown grasshopper) and worms. The insects were fried in oil with some herbs to deaden the gamey taste of the insects. The vendor said that ginger is a good flavoring although they prefer lemon grass. In the provinces here, they eat the beetle. After removing the wings, they fry it in a pan with oil and some salt. But I don't eat beetles for they look like roaches to me.

In an oiled pan, or just in the ashes of your fire.

I am sure Bear Grylls eats all those things and more. I have seen him eat a mouse cooked in some kind of urine stew. Also, in Colorado I was told that they are now farming crickets for consumption. Hmmm, I suppose if it didn't taste like a cricket I could eat it.

Well, they are kind of a "trend" nowadays, I heard that there are special restaurants where they serve insects. I never tried it, but some people say they're kind of tasty.

I personally can't bring myself to eat them. I think it'd need a lot of mental stamina. Also you need to be desperate and hungry for this to work. As you can see that it can be survival food if you choose to be. Not a lot of people I know can do that. I'd eat anything vegan but not the insects for food. It's just too hard on me.

Insects should be easy to cook since they have a small body mass. Drying them in a shallow saucepan should be enough but its advisable to keep off poisonous insects like scorpions as well as those which are brightly coloured, thats my opinion. White ants are particularly good and are eaten in some parts of my country as a delicacy. They are very nutritious and contain essential fatty acids.

Pound for pound insects are more nutritious than most farmed meats, been there done that...and they weren't that bad.
Thankfully there wasn't any fool saying that they're just like chicken.
