A century ago, Asians would find clay pots and store their food underground. The constant temperature is 55 degrees.
This is how they make fermented and pickled foods and it will last for months, possibly years underground

It's a Zeer pot and can do a lot of good. For instance, insulin will keep rather well even if temperatures get up into the 50s Fahrenheit-wise.

And then there are the thermocouple-type auto refridgerators:

Watch out about these thermocouple puppies; their temp delta between ambient and interior is pretty much a fixed number. Therefore, if ambient gets too low, that which is in the refrigerator could freeze.

I know that clay and sand can keep pots warm for days. I think that clay may also stay insulated int he cold. I think burying the food may be the best way to keep it at a constant temperature, but it is not going to be as cold as an actual refrigerator. It would be just a short term solution.

If you are in a place that is very cold you could make a hole in the ground, split logs and use them make a box with lid included which would tightly fit into the hole, insulate the interior with aluminum foils and place some moss over the box. It should provide with cool enough temperature to safely store items that require cooling.

A good homemade fridge can be made from charcoal. A double lining of wire mesh is made and charcoal packed in to leave a hollow in the centre and then kept in a cool room. Charcoal is a very poor conductor of heat and this fridge will keep things fresh quite efficiently at no extra cost.

Before electricity rural dwellers commonly used spring houses to put their fresh obtained milk and meat in for short term storage . Consisted usually of a small wooden house built over a spring that allowed the water to simply run across the floor keeping things cool . I used this technique once to put a bear I had killed in a cool mountain spring over night . I already have a spring house in mind for my spring for when the U.S. looses electricity permanently . Unfortunately I think few members on here have a spring on their bug out location . There is the remains of two old spring houses each about one to two mile on each side of my survival retreat . One was owned and probably built by one of Quantrill's lieutenants when he returned from the U.S. Civil War , carrying lots of money and bought the property with the spring with his loot .

Perhaps slightly off topic but pertains to the prepper . My grandfather took my brother back to his child hood home where he lived in the late 1800's . There he showed my brother the spring " still running " where they had placed a hollow black gum stump for the spring to bubble up in for collecting water . The black gum stump was also intact . They obviously knew what they were looking for when they chose the black gum . That would put that stump being in that spring about eighty years .
