I believe all of us has change our daily routine due to the current epidemic situation. And for some of us changing how we do something isn't easy, for example I have contractual obligation to be on call and ready to hop on the next flight to take 4 hours flight to a neighboring country to do 15 minutes of work + 8 hours of BS-ing (because they paid me for full day work). Furthermore since about a month ago I had temporarily shifting my primary dwelling from my apartment due to the large number of international traveler and the like in the building complex to my secondary residence about 20 minute away from my apartment. I also dramatically change how I interact with other people and end up using teleconference a lot.

With that being said, how about yours? How does this plague affect your daily life?

Nothing so far. Yesterday the first confirmed case in the State was reported. Today I'll make another Costco run. He was a foreign national on a layover. I'm retired and mostly stay home anyway.

    Good afternoon Varuna,

    My changes re the pandemic;

Haven't been to a Chinese buffet restaurant in ages. Am not worried about the food or it's preparation - I know Chinese kitchens - I know some of the managers and their staff. They have friends from all over. Can't say much beyond this.

I've avoided the large Asian grocery store south of here in the big town. Had already mentioned you'd recognize some famous Indonesian brand names at this store. I avoid the place (S. Korean owned) for same reason as above.

No more hand shaking or hugging with ladies. My substitute is the "Wuhan shake" - the feet maneuvers. (Wait 'till Broadway, Nashville and Hollywood develop this !)

Even more exacting that prior, I arrive at stores and post office immediately on opening to avoid crowds.

The biggest thing is that I have shifted from preparing for COVID-19 to "Starting to prep for the post COVID-19 "Catastrophic Super Depression". I do not expect to survive that depression, but I'll play with it for a while. I am in my mid 70's and expect the coming Depression to last at least 20 years. I don't think America will ever return to what it was only 30 or 60 days ago. Everything will change now, not because of the COVID-19 but because it offers a un-resistible gift to the force that will consolidate power.

The term "Chinese food" is a broad term that cover so many variation from all ethnic tradition that originating from China. Chinese food in US may not be the same as those available elsewhere. This is mostly determine by the originating ethnicity of the said culinary tradition. I believe the safest (in term of hygiene preparation) are those found in Indonesia and Nederlander, but this is mostly due to custom of boiling everything before being consume. Even how we prepare meat such as rat, snake, dog, and bat are significantly different than those found in China mainland (we boil them and use staggering variety & amount of spices)

It's easier said than done. It far easier for someone like me due to custom & culture, but it will be far difficult for others either due due to habit or culture.

Good point there. and I personally extremely worry about global finance market, although I predict global market will see rebound by the end of Q4 this year.

I think that is over simplification and very dramatic, whilst I am prepared for the collapse of society I don't think Covid 19 will be the cause, it may make some kind of mini recession and affect the supply chain in a big way especially where products from China and Asia are concerned but I think it will be a short term thing.

Based on "WHAT"........??? Really based on "WHAT"..........hope???

Exactly how many times in your lifespan have you personally seen this "Scale" of thing on most of planet earth. I am in my mid 70's and I have never seen anything close to this Covid-19 as far as world wide impact. And this thing has only just begun.

The true depth of the gravity of this........is to fully accept that we have been living in a illusion. An illusion fabricated on electronic wealth. It has been a great and wonderful scam. But once a scam is exposed, you can't re-run that scam. The DJIA is projected to drop another 30% or more. That wipes out over 50% of illusionary wealth. And as soon as the pension funds start cutting monthly payments by 44% it is all over. Pension funds were broke before this crash.

This "Virus" will end up being nothing compared to the hell that will follow the destroyed illusion of wealth.

NOTE: "Lonewolf" don't take this personal, this is not aimed at you, it is aimed at the whole concept that things will magically get back to what was. Ever get back to what was.

given what some scientists(American ones at that) said recently, they said that this virus may last until May but that once we get some better weather with more sunshine and drier then this thing will probably go into recess.
its not the Black Death, its a respiratory illness similar to influenza and I think the British action of "herd immunity" is probably the correct one.
within a couple of months we will be wondering what all the fuss was about.

    Good afternoon Varuna,

Up until the "opening" of China when Nixon met Mao, US "Chinese food", generally speaking, meant the Cantonese style of preparation and dishes. Seafood was a popular food because Canton was a coastal area.

After the "opening", all the other regional cuisines - and beverages such as Mao Tai liquor, Tsingtao beer (brewery in Beijing area on south of bay but, unfortunately, not Harbin beer [Russian]). Mongolian style dishes started to show up in gthe big US cities. Still, throughout the US, "Chinese food" meant Cantonese style of prep of vegetables and much seafood. Rice was the staple and usually in US, still is - although I've lived in Chinese area where wheat was more prominent than rice except for the internal immigrants.

Indonesia, I concede, must have changed in the last 4-5 years. I've always cataloged Indonesian hygiene - especially re food prep - like much of Malaysia. The term "Dutch clean" DOES NOT APPLY.

Hygiene and the preparation of bats for consumption is oxymoronic.

    ......

    The Wuhan Shake (for other readers, in Cantonese it's pronounced "Moo [like cow talking to you] Hen [think of cereal boxes and pictures of farm yard animals]);

Actually, the US culture has a song and dance: "You put your left foot in, ..." The Hookie Pokie and the Wuhan Shake will prevent transmission of coronavirus involving touching (but not air transmission, if applicable)

We also have a song and dance; "Shake, Shake, Shake".

How difficult is it for a foot to touch another's foot ?

    ......

As an aside, the US also has politics in the "shake stuff". A few years ago, in Texas, a very important and politically powerful state (Pertamina intimately familiar) the Texas state legislature was in session. A state representative prepared legislation to make it prohibited in the Texas public schools for cheer-leader squads to use sexually suggestive cheering maneuvers.

Fortunately, Texas also has some normal people. A state representative, Subrana (spelling?) Thompson, got recognized to speak before the assembled delegates. She went to the microphone and said:

"We're wasting our time with 'One, Two, Three, Four. You can't shake it any more'".

Like I said.......it matters near zero about the medical part. What matters is that the illusion was exposed. And that con is not going to work again. The whole illusion was built on "Debt" that someone else in some far distant future would magically fix. That "Debt" instruments are being held by many institutions that are the foundation of the system. Notice that not one peep has yet been mentioned about derivatives. So it will soon be clear that it was fun, but we are screwed. It ain't going back to the way it was 30 days ago.

I always look on the dark side . That is just the way I am wired . My wife even has a darker mind than me . So prepping is easy as we are both work in unison for teotwawki . So naturally though I may have some minor disagreements with Sourdough's outlook I am basically in agreement . I am not sitting here hoping things will return back to pre 2020 global conditions . The time of the prepper is upon us .

Nobody in the finance industry (that I knew of) have any illusion things will be back as pre 2020. The big question is HOW. How will things change post epidemic, that is the big question. Personally I don't have the slightest clue, my only best guess is, there will be rebound by the end of Q4. One thing everyone sure of is, the year 2020 is a real bleak for everyone.

I'm just getting on with jobs around the place, using my time constructively...a bit of building work, replacing my firewood stack after the winter etc.
It's going to be difficult for me to earn a living with people acting so irrationally so I'm not spending much, I can easily last until late summer that way.

There are some towns or cities where I wouldn't visit right now. Would stay away from crowds of people, for instance I'd avoid airports. Due to my age and my medications, the wifer and I will be a bit more careful and stay local. My place of employment has greatly restricted all travel.

I'm not going to talk about why, however where I work could go very scary. We'll see what new mandates begin to show up. Already seeing the beginnings. I have some serious decisions to make.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

Madam and I are doing the same.

We're staying local at a smaller pace than usual.

Airports are now the snake pits insane asylums of yesteryear.

One main aspect I see going on is the more intense nationalism with much public blame on our changed lifestyle because of that Wuhan wildlife market and the zoonotic transfer of the corona virus. Beijing is addressing this; it's now illegal. Yet, here in the US, the homeless of eg San Francisco, living and crapping on the sidewalks, has been neglected - and it's not just San Francisco with these destitute populations. The wealth's going somewhere - from food stamps/SNAP to 8A housing ......why are these people still living on the streets ?!

It was none at all but wife has now decided due to my risk factor, we are basically going to hunker down for a while. No going out period. I teased that would mean not eating out and she said yes. Now that is scary. I don't care to socialize anyway but she does like to get out and eat out once a week. Passing on eating out means she has gotten the message, big time. She is now fully on board about my "Prepper Mindset". In the past she just tolerated it.

Why not just ordering in (delivery)?

I also use more cashless payment nowadays due to the inherit risk of using hard cash that most likely catching some disease on it. At least with cashless payment it doesn't need to change hand too often.

For us the eating out, is to get out. I am a recluse, so we don't socialize. The dinning out is a way for the wife to venture forth and see / talk to somebody other than me. She know what I think, so wants some conversation with others.

I have always said that when TSHTF, not sure if that is this virus or not, we may have to revert to a simpler way of life, many people seem to be waiting for everything to return to "NORMAL", (I am not one of them) , well the new normal may be like nothing that ever went before.

The biggest change has obviously been work. Normally, I would be working, and now... Im not. I install rain gutter, and do siding and stuff, and folks aren't worried about that right now.

The lockdown in Illinois hasn't changed much. I don't own a car, I usually have a work truck but we store those for the winter, and no reason to get them out at the moment. So I'm walking places, but I always do that in the winter. Not a big deal.

I prepaid my lot rent (trailer park) for a few months in December, and its coming due again so thats a worry I dont normally have, but I wouldnt call it life changing.

They closed the state parks, so I wont be able to go squirrel and rabbit hunting where I normally could, so Im going for hikes on the railroad tracks, and we can still go fishing, of course. Just have to walk the tracks out of town. For me to get to my spot, its about a 5 mile walk round trip, and its a nice hike.

Walmart is rationing, but I normally buy for 2 weeks at a time. Not really stocked up like some folks Ive seen here in some of the threads, but I'm probably better off than many folks in town just due to my normal habits. No need to fight for TP, I have plenty, and honestly, I live alone. I have rags and bar soap.

Overall, the biggest change would be social and family life. I cant see my parents face to face, and my friends are a bit spread out and hard to see, and not really "online" folks. So, we call each other and talk. If I had a rotary dial phone on the wall, with a stupid long coiled cord, I would be nostalgic!

No big worries yet. The coming weeks... who knows? But yeah, work and family and friends, definitely biggest changes.

    Stay safe.

    Good afternoon Patience,

    First: Welcome to the Forum.

You're doing the right stuff as far as Prepper doctrine goes.

That healthy walk ... and some fishing ... This is more important than stockpiles of beer, liquor and chocolate.

Keep up the pace - both the walking and the Prepping.

Was just reading Breitbart article "Surgeon General Issues Coronavirus Warning: ‘This Week It’s Going to Get Bad’"
    https://www.breitbart.com/clips/202...virus-warning-this-week-its-going-to-get-bad/

The above article got some great comments. One of the "Best" rated comments I found very interesting:

    "Alex Haig
"I live in upstate New York and we are being flooded by people from NY City, many of whom have summer places here (we call them Cityots), and they are like locusts cleaning out the local stores. The shotgun is out of the cabinet and ready."

    "Cityots"! Isn't that just great!

    correct spelling:
    Citiot

    https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Citiot

Already in the urban dictionary. Scroll down on the above "urban dictionary" link and read what people have said about citiots. Funny stuff!

Your situation is roughly similar to mine. I'm currently unemployed and so poor (living under $5 / day) to the point I don't own any real asset and no longer own any motor vehicle. All I have are either personal property or intangible asset :( I even rent all my places of dwelling (2 place in the same city 15 minutes apart by driving). During normal time such arrangement work just fine, but during this time of rampaging plague it start to become potential problem.

You might be in better shape than I'm. When this plague began to go global in mid January, I was just start recovering from 5 months of depression & anxiety of which the only therapy is to having close family / friend nearby to talk to face-to-face. Although there is no lockdown policy where I live (and unlikely) the risk of catching infection during travel (train or plane) is just to great of a risk to take :(

I am in the second week of House Arrest. Work mandated we work from home. Wife is off-the-charts paranoid. The Draconian measures she wants to take for going outside make it not worth going. I am lucky to walk to the mailbox to get the mail.

Yes. This has curtailed my activity dramatically. I don't expect I will die. Unless you can die from boredom. We will survive. This too shall pass.

That makes two of us. I am also on house arrest (COPD) and the warden (Wife) is not going to pardon me any time soon. I did put my foot down (sorta) and state she would not be going out alone. She does not carry (has her own handgun) and I don't trust folks. We have not been out in over a week. End result, I don't get out, unless the warden goes out and she has figured out how to get almost everything we want on line and delivered.

I'm fortunate that I can work from home along with the rest of my company, for the most part. I go to the grocery store
about every. 4 or 5 days, to see if anything is left. I now carry gun at home at all times, even to the bathroom. I've reloaded
all the 9mm, 45 acp, 223 and 12 gauge that I feel is sufficient to ward off a major zombie attack, in the event that the shit hits the fan..... oh wait..... I am wondering if the shit has indeed hit the fan, or if this is just the appetizer. I don't think the shit has actually hit the fan. I've not seen any reports of cities in flames, riots looting or hangings. Am I just not reading the right
    media?

How has this changed my life ??? I'm a 5 o'clock riser … my wife gets up around 8:30. I get the fire going, coffee, etc and wait for her to started her day before I really start mine. As soon as she comes down the stars … we give each other a morning hug and kiss. The change ??? Those morning hugs are lasting a bit longer, a bit tighter and the kisses a bit sweeter than in the past. An unspoken re-newed appreciation for each other.

Note to self: cancel all international vacation plans to Gaza, Syria and Hong Kong.

I suspect that you are right. All this running and hiding only will make it last longer and destroy the economy thoroughly. In the end, I'm not sure that hiding is going to change the overall death count that much. This may be one of those "just rip the bandaid off and get it over with" situations. We will know in a month or two how it works out for Great Britain.

The problem is, given the global nature, it's not possible for the entire world to go into lockdown at the same time for the virus to die out. Rather, it's just going to keep rearing its ugly head. So unless we want to play hide and seek (we hide whilst the virus seeks us out) for the next year or two until a suitable vaccine is discovered, I'm afraid it may be better to just get on with it and hope the grim reaper doesn't come knock, knock, knocking on our door.

No real change. Worst part has been no date night with the wife since no movies or restaurant. Retired and until it's warm enough to go fishing and kayaking, we stay home. Looking forward to turkey season.

I have made a decision not to go to Wally World/Wal Mart any more than I absolutely have to in making do.

I find it too heavily trafficked for my liking and in particular with their new hours.

Though I go around heeled ...for some years now...soon enough I am expecting the "Entitlement minded " two legged wildlife in this town and even this country to be running wild in getting to what they think themselves entitled in this marketplace.

Hence I believe Wally World will not be frequented by me as was the case in the past..when I could go in the middle of the night. I liked those hours much much better....fewer people...fewer two legged wildlife.

Always been sort of a night owl type here..

    Thanks,

Personally my faith in Christ has allowed me to have no fear over this outbreak. I do not believe this event will cause total anarchy and the collapse of all civilization, but I do believe that the government could create a military state and make our lives a little less free.
