I've always wanted a gun for self-defense but my wife who not allow have a gun in the house....GRRRRR

We live in the suburbs of a very densely populated area and worry about civil arrest and social break-down.

I was thinking about purchasing a high-powered air rifle. Is this feasible? How about a good guard dog?

Just feeling helpless at the moment on how I could properly defend myself. I do have a studio-grade replic of a handgun(you would never know the difference) is this something I would draw on a person if shit hits the fan or would that just create more problems for myself?

    Thanks!

In my opinion, pulling a fake gun will most likely get your severely injured or dead. A very good pellet rifle (not BB gun) can provide a fair self defense. The question I have is why would your wife ALLOW you to have a lethal pellet rifle if she won't allow you to have a firearm? Since you will not be ALLOWED to defend your home, then ask her to wear nothing but her underwear around the house. That way when the thugs kick in the door, they will be distracted by her and that may allow YOU enough time to escape.

+1 on don't try to defend yourself with a toy. Any weapon is better than none but no weapon is as good as a gun. You can have a knife but remember it only takes one gun to make it a gun fight. Don't be the one bringing a knife to a gun fight. Several of the gals at the range started going there after being attacked. Good luck.

Try a taser or a can of bear spray. A baseball bat has been a stand by for years. You can always take up spear fishing.

Got a set of golf clubs. A 5 iron will work just fine until you can procure a weapon off of somebody that is stupid enough to break into your house. Also a defense in depth plan can buy you time and deter bad actors.

Has your wife have a specific reason for eschewing firearms?

If she has no rational reason, then she is, quite frankly, being neurotic about this.

There exist very rapid access safes for firearm storage.

    https://www.personaldefenseworld.com/2014/06/6-top-safes-easy-access/

One can bolt such a safe to the floor or you can cut a rectangular hole in a wall, build a catch out of 2"x 4" sections, mount the catch between wall studs, place the save therein, then bolt the safe into the wall structure. No burglar is going to take the time to bust that safe loose. Someone attempts to break into your home and you can access the weapon in 3 seconds, maybe less.

I am infuriated with the collectivist MSM propagandizing people into becoming sheeple. I hope these elitists are shredded into heaps of rotting flesh when the cities are annihilated during the coming SHTF days of reckoning. They stand proud before God; let them pay.

Slowly introduce your wife to the sport of shooting. Begin with an accurate air rifle. Later, purchase a .22 handgun for range use. Keep the revolver in a rapid access safe. For training women to shoot, I recommend the revolver (there are lots and lots of reasons, but I don't want to get into all of that right now; I've trained women to shoot, just trust me on this one). You wish a revolver that is not too loud and which has little recoil. As to the .32 revolver in say .32 H&R mag or .327 magnum, these will also fire the .32 long wadcutter which has little recoil, yet has some effectiveness in self-defense (if you unload the entire cylinder into a felon). They'll even shoot the .32 short, for that matter -- it has no recoil. Do NOT go with full horse .327 mag, even .32 H&R mag -- she'll be instantly put-off to all handguns (these puppies are loud). Have your wife wear earplugs and ear muffs. We wish her to develop zero flinching.

You and you wife seek instruction. Don't let your wife be irrational. Not about firearms. Not about anything else. Anxiety gets people killed in emergency situations.

In Aus keeping a gun for self-defence is near on impossible. They have to be locked away at all times so by the time you get the keys, pull out your weapon, get the keys for the ammo, arm it (ammo has to be kept in a separately locked area of the safe or another safe) you'd be pretty much dead.

I have a very formidable German Shepherd with a sign on the gate "his bite is worse than his bark" which does a wonderful job of deterring people from coming onto my property. Being black, when his hackles go up he nearly doubles in size. Scares people to death when they see him. His bark is something else as well.

A dog is a good choice, gun or no. Someone that is trained can take out a dog but two dogs is another matter, the bad guy is toast. You will need to train the critter(s).

    1. Blitz
True but I'm not likely to get anyone trained around here that would trespass. Only idiots who would trespass here are a few stubbies short of a 6 pack.

And even if they were trained, I'd like to see them try. My dog has caught flying birds, mice and chickens. He is extremely well versed in the art of hunting.

Don't worry about people that are trained. We are few and far between and if we have a plan, 1 dog or a dozen doesn't matter. Individuals with training, gear and a motive prefer targets with a high payoff. Just sayin.

Then do not follow the law.

"Better to be tried by twelve, than carried by six."

Coppers see you with your shotgun, "Lady, why do you have that?"

"Here's my hunting license, officer. My sweet little doggie here alerted me to some danger. For safety's sake, I brought out my hunting shotgun. Officer, have other people in this area had troubles with wild animals? Are pets and sheep being slaughtered? Oh my!"

Use your imagination. Pay-off the cops with pies and cookies. Pretend to be ever so benevolent and kind. My dad and his buddies paid-off cops and state congressmen with hard cash. Never trust a cop who doesn't take some sort of pay-off.

Hahahaha! If only! Cops are nothing like that here. I have a good friend who's a sargeant and even he couldn't get me off if I shot a person. Even if they trespass, if you shoot them, you end up in gaol. For a very, long, long time. You can get 10 years if you're in possession of an illegal firearm. Pistols are even worse. You can only use a pistol at a designated pistol range. My husband's biggest dream was moving to America so he could have lots of different firearms and actually carry a pistol on his person.

Go buy a gun. Don't piss around, get a decent 9mm semi-auto. Get a concealement holster, a kydex one, and practice with it. If you cant spend a lot of time and money at the range, at least do some dry fire drills a couple times a week.

Why a 9mm semi auto? The gun and ammo will be cheap. Or can be.

Why a concealement holster? If your not 100% sure your facing a deadly threat, you can have your gun on you and walk outside without brandishing your pistol at the neighbor looking for his cat.

Why kydex? Your pistol wont have the safety on. If it does, and you dont train a shit ton to flick that safety everytime the sights hit your eyes... under stress you will forget. The kydex holster is your safety. When you draw it, its always not safe, just what we want.

When your wife sees it, let her yell, express her concerns, tell you how dissapointed she is. Then tell her you love her. Then tell her to shut up.

Your a man. Its your job to keep your family safe. Its ALWAYS been that way. Thats your number one job in life.

Dont let anyone prevent you from doing that job, perfectly.

I love the "Then tell her to shut up." LOL! If she doesn't kill you that night, hire a good divorce lawyer the next day. You'll need it. LOL!

What about talking with her about a shotgun... yeah it’s still a gun but I got mine because I was broken into twice... the police here told me to buy a shotgun so I did. I’ve had other firearms, but a shotgun is nice, pretty easy to handle, easy to load, just point and shoot. Of course if you’ve never been around guns a class would be good. I also have a dog as well as mace. I’m a 49 year old single female and have been around guns all my life so a firearm to me is just a given. Much luck!

If you read the book Violence Of Mind, you'll realize that is a very dumb thing to accept. The author went to prison because the guy that roughed him up was stabbed multiple times out of self defense. Even so, the author went to prison. He described it as a not so friendly place to be among the "wolves." You are there with nothing but your thoughts of your wife going on living without you. Probably getting it on with another man. Your kids growing up without you, etc.

The goal with a fight is to win the fight and the lawsuit that will probably happen once you are in a fight. Whether you were defending yourself or not. That's why here in the U.S. you can get insurance from the NRA in case you go to court. God help you if you lose the court fight. You don't want to live among murderers and rapists, etc. The cell is also like a walk in closet with hardly any room and you're in there for hours on end. That is your new life, that is your new home. Not to mention how your life is all messed up now. The loss of your job, car, house, property, etc. And "rehabilitation" is a joke. Once you get out where do you begin? What job can you get? Where will you live? In the slums, that's where.

So the rule in Oz is to keep the gun an ammunition separate, okay. Do so and if you have to use it while someone is breaking down the front door, at least the assailant's family can't sue you saying you did not follow the law about your gun and ammo. Right there is a perfect excuse for the prosecution to get you in a small prison cell. And believe me when I tell you the prosecution will interview your neighbors, your hair cut person, etc. If you're the type to go around saying things to people or on the Internet about how you'd blow a guy away at the front door, right there the prosecution has ammunition to convince a jury you were blood thirsty all along.

Again, it's about wining two fights: The fist/gun what ever fight and the court fight while protecting yourself from physical and lawful hurt. Don't bring malice upon yourself due to stupidity. Lawyers are very cunning and it doesn't matter if you did the right thing or not.

Book is called Violence Of Mind by Varg Freeborn. Highly recommend it to all that conceal carry. Should be required reading if you ask me. Due note that the author is very raw and doesn't hold back.

I always preferred a 9 iron myself. I guess that it is just me but I would buy a gun. She needs to grow up and if she doesn't want a gun then you need to stop locking the doors. If you are not going to allow protection then you shouldn't want that poor misunderstood thief and rapist to hurt himself knocking down your door. NEVER point a toy gun a person if you do they will kill you. If nothing else clubs are better than nothing but I would rather a spear myself. A Cold Steel Assegai isa nice short spear, How about a machete or an ax if nothing else a ripping hammer is a beast in a fight. that is the claw hammers that the claw sticks straight out or even a carpenters hatchet.

Anything is better than nothing BUT make sure before you get anything that you are prepared and willing to use it. Weapons lose their advantage when used to threaten. When you threaten you have not committed to fight and if they charge you a person can't then decide to attack and you may be taken out before you cn make a decision. If you are not willing to do WHATEVER it takes then you are safer to hide and hope that they don't kill you.

Check out a good 80 pound crossbow. Look into a flare gun. Buy mace that is lawful in your area. Spend the $400 something and get a stun gun. These will fire out two projectiles connected to thin wires that deliver a shock that do have the tendency of having your enemy shit their pants. Or give them a heart attack so be ready for the lawsuit. Also, each pull of the trigger will deliver an electrical zap. If you zapped the guy, say in a very loud and stern voice, "STAY DOWN OR I'LL ZAP YOU AGAIN!" At this time have someone call the police or you do, but keep the finger on the trigger. Also note that some people are resistant to a stun gun or even mace. Especially if they are drugged up on god knows what. A flare gun, while not ideal will put a hole into a cranium. Or a nice hole in the chest. I'd stay far, FAR away from a knife unless you are properly trained to know how to use it. If it's taken from you you'll be in a world of hurt. And NEVER hide a knife near your bed. The assailant will find it and that's it you're in the morgue.

Someone here mentioned they bought biohazard tape for when the SHTF they'd place that in the front of their door. So I bought a few large biohazard stickers that I can stick to the front door and the patio door. It may not be full proof, but at least would-be thieves, etc will think twice about entering.

Also know that a good majority of crime happens at the front door. Because of this I have a Ring door bell. This is a camera doorbell sold by Ring. Now you have video evidence. A dog is probably the number one deterrent you can get. Most would-be criminals don't want to mess with a dog in a home. Of course I shouldn't have to tell you that it can't be a poodle or what ever. LOL

Also note that if someone is coming in through the door, yell real loud you're armed and will shoot. And do NOT shoot unless they are in your house. Castle doctrine works from inside the doorway. Not outside it. And don't even think you can drag a body into the doorway. Forensics will know otherwise. Believe me.

    In summary:

A dog will be a number one deterrent.

Flare gun is a possibility. I own one and several fire extinguishers around the house.

An 80 pound crossbow can be had on Amazon or eBay. I bought mine on eBay.

A stun gun is an option, but very expensive. I'm not talking about the cheap crap you have to reach out and touch someone with. I'm talking about the type police use that fire out two projectiles.

Mace is an option. I like Sabre Red. Make sure when you buy it it's not past its expiration date.

Don't consider a knife unless you're trained to use it.

Also, stay away from the door and don't use the peep hole. That's why you want a camera. If police come to your door, verify. Is there a police car there or not? No? Call the police and verify. A certain mafia family dressed as cops, rang the victim's doorbell, he answered and wound up with a clip of .380 ammunition in his head. Closed casket.

Baseball bat has been mentioned. Any type of club; walking staff; billy club. Edged weapons; knife, machete, sword. Chemical weapons; mace, pepper spray, even wasp spray. Anything that will maintain distance, and allow you to get away.

IMHO have a very serious heart-to-heart talk with your wife about firearms. Maybe take her to a range, and help her learn to alleviate her fears. It may just be a fear of the unknown. Gaining some knowledge may make her more comfortable.

    oolongmonkey,

What is wrong with your thinking??

Why would you be dumb enough to try to protect your home and property with one or both hands tied behind your back??

Send your wife out there to protect the family if she holds all the power...therefore she holds all the responsibility.

I make the house payments here....the insurance and maintain it....I make those decisions...not someone trembling in their boots at the slightest inconvenience.

I get so tired and disgusted of people trying to get me to accommodate ..at my expense...their fears and insecurities....their inabilities.

They don't know how to do jack..but want..yea even demand...someone else make up the difference...yea...even flashdance them through life's hurdles/difficulties...no risk taking on their part.

And then they are stupid enough to tie someone's hands behind their back when they do try to get something done...based on their own fear and insecurities.

You are going to learn that many many of these people live safe secure lives with someone else taking the risk out of life for them and want them to continue even in more difficult times and with greater risk...danger...happening.

And they want someone else to underwrite this risk without them suffering any risk or threat to their pet beliefs...their religion if you like.

In short ...you gotta be educated to be that naturally stupid..

Send your wife out there to protect the home and family...to take the risks herself without any safety net....while you sit back with a cold one, a remote controller, and cell phone in your arsenal.

I don't believe in taking second, third, and fourth place in my own home when I take first place risks to pay for it and keep and maintain it.

You need to grow a pair dude....

Too many people in this country live comfortable lives based on the risk taking of others....and many of them in leftist liberal suburbs....

This ignorant belief system is going to catch up with many of them...if not already.

Sorry for the length and tenor of this post but I've met too many males in your shoes...neutered males...and they don't seem to realize it.

    Your married to an Ishmaelite.

    However.....don't you be further ignorant....
Owning a gun is a significant responsibility...it is not just a show...
You need to know how to safely use and store it...particularly if you have children....family tugging at your britches.

Olde Geezer is correct in their assessment..and not as harsh as am I. Much more civilized.

these are not normal times and normal rules don't apply.
already we have people verbally abusing nurses and people spitting in the faces of care workers, if this thing goes on as long as I and others think it will its only going to get worse.
if someone lives in an urban setting then it will get worse a lot faster than someone in a remote location.
and don't expect the Police to come to your rescue, we don't see Police where I live in the good times never mind a Pandemic, they've all got their hands full with idiots in the cities kicking off.

Most homes are confined spaces, swinging a club or edged weapon, like a bat or machete, isn't going to be as effective as if you were outside. Walls and furniture are not going to move out of the way for you.
If you use bear spray, or worse wasp spray, inside you will gas yourself as well as the perp. Sprays are going to hang around for a long time if used inside.

The cold hard truth is that this position should have been thought out and planned for years ago...not here at the last minute as this fellow is trying to do now.

Materials/tools should have been purchased...properly stored and trained in their use....long ago.

Some of us have talked about such scenarios for years and years on this site as well as others.

Time is and has closed the door....he is trying now , in his OP, to close the gate after the cows have gotten out.

I expect many gun stores have closed their doors now...and many leftist suburban states have long waiting periods for the purchase of a firearm.

Again...this situation should have been planned and secured long ago....before this event happened...and in addition to that ….his woman brought on board......not him brought on board to the level of his woman's fears and insecurities.

    By Texdanm…..

Have one of those up in my locked radio room...

Also an English Broadsword....not a replica...

Also a Barnet Recurve Crossbow...150 lb draw.

Learned to make my own bolts...fletch them as well.
    '
There are things you can do ..but it is difficult after the cows have gotten out of the gate..

But how about those Kardashians....ESPN....NASCAR.....The Golden Globes....OSCARS....et al.

    Hey Texdanm,

Wow did I ever get a stunner.

I have not been back or ordered anything from the Cold Steel web site and was a bit shocked at the prices when I want back just now.

Both the short and long Assegai spears have gone up considerably since last I ventured to that site.

I reckon I need to get out more....prices are moving more than what I had thought.

Though It has been many years ago that I got my Assegai Short Spear....seems to me it was about 40 to 50 bucks. Now it is some 70 bucks.

I verily like the short spear. It is not a toy.

I hear what your saying. Along with my wife I also had reservations living in Chicago. I figured that gun owners would be the first ones to have authorities knocking on their doors and if you do practice self-defense you get some social justice warrior judge who will let the criminal go and throw you in jail for the rest of your life!

    oolongmonkey,

As I have put this on here before...I'll do it again...to illustrate how stupid some people are out here and many of them in government positions.

This particularly with our newly elected leftist government here in Virginia trying to put severe restrictions on gun ownership.

These guys are seriously worried about me and gun ownership....seriously!!??? High capacity magazines...really!!??

I am a machinist by trade on these ships...nuclear powered ships...

Our teams install the fuel cells in these reactors....prepare and install it. We also assist the teams who pull out the olde spent fuel cells.

One has to be seriously educated in advanced dumb ass to worry about me with a gun and or ammunition.

But they are out there...and many of them have been to college....can you believe it????

This is also why I am not interested in being herded and or lead around by a woman's fears and insecurities.

Not interested in running such touchdowns for them and increasing my risk levels for them, their fears, and insecurities.

I am not interested in such expendability and or disposability .....even in politics.

I also do not think folks with our training will be on nationwide lockdown...with this virus.

    Thanks,

I understand it is a very difficult decision to make. If you can't protect yourself you can't protect your family. Your wife has to be (should be) a part of the decision making process. Maybe you tell her you are going to get a gun. You buy it. You store it. You practice with it. You keep it in a safe secure place. She doesn't even have to know it is there. She doesn't have to use it.

You have the peace of mind knowing you and your family will be secure. As far as your wife is concerned, she doesn't even know there is a gun in the house. Just my .02.

I'm sorry but you have more of a problem than just this question about a gun. Your problem is that your wife doesn't deal with reality. The REALITY is that a gun doesn't either A. turn the owner into a homicidal maniac nor B. magically become alive and shoot itself. Just because you have a gun in NO way has to be a threat to her, you, or anyone. You could get a gun and ammo and lock it up in a safe place for emergencies. This might be useless for now as protection but at least if things go totally to hell you can get it then. If your wife can't understand and deal with this then your decision is whether you personally are willing to accept that you will die if things ever collapse or if you are going to make your preparations secretly understanding that you will probably have to abandon her in the event of TEOTWAWKI. Understand as sad as this is that some people will choose death than facing reality and there is nothing that YOU can do to change that. You can try but understand that you are trying to change something that is inherent to your wife.

This is sort of like her refusing to let you buy life insurance because she is afraid that you will die and buying insurance admits that as a possibility.

Well said indeed. I've notice in most survivalisst / prepper forum most people (American in particular) somehow believe that having gun or a lot of guns solve everything. Although if I live in combat zone I definitely prefer to have gun preferably an assault rifle with enough ammo to go along with it, and maybe some claymore here and there :)

Varuna, Guns can't solve everything. Explosives! Now all problems can be solved with the proper use of explosives! LOL!
Claymore's are a nice addition always.

Maybe a couple M86 PDM mines if I'm lucky.

Guns don't solve everything BUT not having a gun when gun bearing people attack you and your home can be a death sentence. A bow and arrow might let you take one or two with you but probably not.

Thanks for reminding me Wally...I didn't address this so... Never EVER point a toy gun at anyone. They will all too likely kill you for it. They will KNOW it is a toy when you pull the trigger and it goes click. Then they will show you the difference and the last thing you will hear is BOOM! You are much better off to either run or surrender, nearly anything is better than pointing a toy gun no matter how real it may look at anyone. I am of the opinion that you only show a real gun when you are about to kill someone. Guns are not for threatening people. Get a machete or a big butcher knife and dump the toy gun as a form of defense.

It seem just about every year some kid or some idiot gets shot for pointing a modified TOY gun or BB gun at somebody carrying a REAL gun. Either use a real weapon or run.

This may sound strange to you but I wasn't hear any BOOM when I took 2x 9mm on the chest. All I felt was like getting kick or punch (whatever) by HUGE invisible force. I still remember the guy face though. Such was the price of my hesitation that day.

Getting shot is a weird ass experience. I saw the guy who shot me the first time I got shot, but just couldn't get my body to get clear of his firing arc. Things had gone bad and my mind was moving at top speed, but I couldn't get my body to move any faster. A rag tag tribal merc shot me 3 times in the chest and I couldn't bring my weapon to bear on him before he fired. In reality, everything happened in less than 2 seconds, but it felt like 5 minutes. Kevlar saved my bacon, but oh lord it hurt. Made blood blisters the size of golf balls and bruised most of my chest for several days.

The second time I got shot I didn't see anything and there was too much gunfire to hear anything. I just felt a sharp burning pain in my leg and foot and saw blood squirting out of me. A strange feeling.

I learned you can be highly trained. Extremely experienced and in great physical shape but you can't account for everything.

There is a saying in special operations, "Professionals are predictable, but it's the lucky amateur that will kill you."

My not so scientific hypothesis on that is, once adrenaline get pumped our brain went into overclock to process all the information (life threatening situation) unfortunately our motoric muscles unable to react as fast as our brain thus creating the "perception" of slow motion or semi paralyzed

Actually, that was just meant in a sarcastic way. Bullets travel faster than sound so the one that hits you in the head will never be heard.

When you are injured or threatened with the belief that something is life or death a lot of things happen. All sorts of chemicals flood your bloodstream. In some cases the blood flow to immediately not needed organs are shut down and the blood is then short cycled through the parts that might be needed. Some of these endorphins hugely increase your strength well past your red-lines.

Your brain shifts and you get tunnel vision. this is because you have shoved aside everything except this one thing. the increased processing power makes it seem that time has slowed. For that moment in this one area you are like a super genius. A lot of little things happen all at the same time.

The blood flow to the surface areas is cut way back. this makes for more blood for the muscles but also protects you from bleeding as much from nonlethal injuries. Eve a massive cut will shut off as the muscles around the injury will shut off the blood flow. All of this will even keep you going after you are lethally injured.

The red lines are part of your protective system. we are much stronger than we are generally able to use because this protects you from tearing tendons loose or breaking bones. You know those people that you hear about that pick up a car to get it off of someone? The rest of the story for many of them is a living hell of pain later because of crushed vertebrae and torn up overstretched tendons and muscles. Top-level athletes learn how to access this and later pay the price. You have seen them get pumped up and mad before doing something insane and nearly impossible.

Even this has a cost. This is addictive. You have heard of adrenaline junkies? they are real and it isn't all that pretty. they eventually often get like someone on steroids and start to lose the ability to turn it off. That is why you see so many pro athletes getting in trouble with the law for acts of violence, drug use, assault, and domestic violence. Their adrenal glands become like a leaky faucet constantly keeping them on edge.

Learning how to control these instinctive responses is possible but also dangerous. those limits are there for a reason. There are reasons why we don't just stay like that, 7 feet tall and armor-plated.

This has been an interest of mine for many years. You can turn pain off to some extent but if you do that will come back and bite you in the ass. Doing that is like taking the batteries out of your smoke detectors.

In a time of TEOTWAWKI you will be forced into this most likely. It will save your life. BUT if you don't also learn how to turn it off and relax and accept things and let them go you will start to break down PTSD can kill you just as surely as a bullet. A life without smiles, laughter, and love isn't really life at all.

That's my understanding of what physically happens. I've done it a number of times during my life. I figure most people have.

TD, That is a very good explanation of it and it is very addictive.

I was an adrenaline junky and it took me years to deal with it. A lot of it was learning to use my mind to control my body and you can shut down pain, hunger, emotions, everything but the mission at hand. I had anger issues for years. I was shown how to use my pain and turn it to anger. Anger into action and action into accomplishment. They forgot to tell us that when you leave the service, there is no off switch.

I can still tap into it. I can stop my hiccups with my mind. I never hiccup more than once. I can stop most headaches the same way. Taught my kids how todo it but the wife still can't.

Your body pays a heavy price. When I enlisted I was 6 ' tall. When I left the service 5 and a half years latter I was 5' 10" and had 2 ruptured disc and a couple herniated disc. Hooah! - sarcasm.

I am 66 and my body is used up. I know what you are saying.

Soldiers come home and pick up where they left off but warriors seem to leave a part of their soul on the battlefield or take that battlefield home with them. The military just brings you home and dumps you and for a warrior this is like snatching a diver up from the deeps too fast.
