As store shelves are being wiped clean many can predict what will happen next . When the warehouses holding last summer's crop becomes bare , food will stop arriving for the consumer . Import and export of any goods at an almost standstill for all countries already being seen . That is when a serious die off will begin . I have looked but failed to find at where the ware houses presently stand with their inventory . I have found out the silos of corn are running out . One feed store in the deep south I know is out and can not resupply , this is also seen as a real threat to a feed store that I talked to this morning that is about five hundred miles from the store that is already out . Do any of you care to guess as to the date the real death tally will begin ?

As I have stated before when the food trucks stop then we will be in a real teotwawki situation..What we have going on now with cv-19 is just the leading edge of the storm...

    Good afternoon Poltiregist,

No, don't want to guess the date.

What I've been sometimes reading is that grocery stores can only handle 1 truck load per day. I know otherwise. It is an indicator of something.

Now just to make it more interesting..........Pretend you live in Alaska where 99.7% of the food is shipped into the state, from America, by huge ships. OK......still fairly boring for you, pretend that there is no way out of Alaska. The only road IN or OUT is not blocked.
Still not challenging enough......I know your all super sharp, and thinking, "just fly out". Well Alaska Airlines just cancelled 200+ flights per day (every DAY).

    It's not going to happen.

    You'll be ok.
You've told us countless times how you can survive for years on your caches and survival skills.............unless it was all just fantasy..........

Regardless of all the hoopla, a very small proportion of the world's population is infected with this virus. It's not the end of the world.

To put it in perspective Alaska Air has 1300 flights a day, many within the lower 48, and they cut 200 due to lack of passengers. There is no railroad that crosses the Alaska/Canada border. The governor just got a letter signed by 100 doctors asking him to shut down all passenger air travel into Alaska. To flu all the food and supplies into Alaska you'd have to setup an airlift that would make the Berlin Airlift look like play time in the nursery.

I've had poor kin who received the gov. cheese.

Problem during a crisis is distribution, of course. Alaska has its seaports; there's an upside. Eisenhower's interstates will come in handy. Eisenhower did this as a military project. Wish that trains had kept their importance. All this trucking is nuts.

Thing about distribution is that the squeaky wheel gets the oil, therefore the megalopolises will be served first. Yet if chaos rules in the cities, then I sure wouldn't want to be the delivery people ... unless you hand out the riot shotguns to the convoys. Blasting looters -- will they do it? Inquisitive minds want to know.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

Ah, the returned memories of distributing USDA commodity foods stocks ! Senator Proxmier of Wisconsin helped the program's dairy section.

This program was far better than the replacement "food stamps" / SNAP of today.

In reply, the Defense Department has a modern version of the 19th century "riding shotgun". I've got the regulation here somewhere. It's titled "Armed Guard Surveillance" and users just called it "A.G.S.". Trip reports involving incidents not available to the public.

A related program - forgot the formal name - was/is the "chase vehicle". A second vehicle accompanies the truck. Reservists / contractors were prepared for events.

I think people need to be a little more optimistic then they are and not so pessimistic. By this Summer I'm sure a good majority of this virus hell will subside. I've read that a doctor does see the light at the end of the tunnel and in fact there are at least 100 medications being looked at to treat this god awful shit. Up to and including one used for malaria. Also, a vaccine may be here rather quickly. They say a year to 18 months, but I hope it's sooner.

I'm quite familiar with commodity foods from the government growing up poor in the 80s in bum f*&^% northern North Dakota. It was a great way to have lots and I mean LOTS of cheap food to eat and best of all, USDA prime choice! I also drank powdered milk growing up. Didn't kill me seen as how I'm typing this now.

Will mankind starve off? F&^^% no! We've all bleed, cried, fought war after war, innovated, invented and have two probes called Viking in interstellar space right now to simply be phased out by a Chinese bastard virus.

So with that. f&% China, F&*&U their communist disgusting wet market BS and let us ALL learn from this and make our own shit here for once. We will in turn grow and be more prosperous then we ever were before. I can already see a great multitude of wealth on the horizon. Did polio cause starvation? NO! A cure came out a year latter and guess what? We eradicated that c&^(* sucker.

If doom and gloom is all you focus on then doom and gloom it shall be.

With how interconnected every damn thing is now a days, especially social media, the crap spreads faster than the damn virus its self.

Now here's something that was largely under reported. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Darfur

While you went to work, checked your email, took a shit, drank coffee, and f^%&cked, there was a genocide going on and no two F's given.

If you don't want to read it all, here's the first paragraph:

The War in Darfur, also nicknamed the Land Cruiser War,[a] is a major armed conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan that began in February 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebel groups began fighting the government of Sudan, which they accused of oppressing Darfur's non-Arab population.[27][28] The government responded to attacks by carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against Darfur's non-Arabs. This resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the indictment of Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court.[29]

I would not have had my career in aerospace, nor my lifetime hobbies of geology and microscopy, had I not attended a high school (here) in Micronesia run by the Society of Jesus.

All of my teachers were either Jesuit priests or Jesuit brothers, religious who were not priests. All of them had at a minimum an undergraduate degree in either the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, etc.) or life sciences (biology, botany, etc.).

It was far and away the best education I could have received my first three years of high school. When my family moved and I did my senior year in a public high school in the Washington DC suburbs, I slept through most of my classes and got A's.

The responsible thing for an government leader to do is to try to keep the masses calm . This tact includes down right lying to the public . The mind set of a prepper is to not trust the government , but think for themselves . What we see and what we are being told " don't match " . The reactions of governments speaks loudly for me . Their words are only a vague whisper .

I haven't seen much. If there was someplace that should be at great risk for starvation, or unrest, then inner city Chicago should be the canary in the coal mine.

And aside from the normal background crime, I haven't heard anything. I dont get into the city proper much, but if bad things were happening, I dont see the government being able to hide the effects, Im just too close. I can be downtown in 45 minutes. Im on the edges of suburbia.

I went to work yesterday, and we are getting a few calls a day for estimates. I expect that to only pick up. Normally, we would be getting 10 to 15 calls a day.

Im not poo-pooing anyones concerns, if your in Alaska, you might be looking at some hardship?

Here, farmers are planting, or if they arent they are getting the equipment out of the shed and staging. People are shopping for essentials, and actually being nicer if anything. Standing further away, but I see a lot more folks chatting in parking lots and in yards than I did last year. Maybe they are sizing each other up for cannibalism?

Besides, we would need to know whats in the supply chain, and the capacity to move it, before we could make a call on a date for a breakdown. If anyone has info on that I would listen.

any starvation will be in the big cities just because of the numbers involved, but then all preppers know that. city folk over here panic buy at the best of times, the amount of food that is thrown out every year is astronomical just because it has gone over dated, I suspect the same will happen once the virus has abated, and then they will go back to their usual shopping habits.

Some of the food waste is due to regulation. I know in Chicago a lot of chain grocers will bleach spray anything they put in dumpsters, out of fear of lawsuits from someone eating from the bin.

For sure, I dont forsee a ton of change in anyones eating habits once this all dies down.

And if it has only just started......then what.

If this was an intentional biological warfare attack.......why assume there is only "ONE" stage.

There could be many planned (mutated) attacks staged.

I admittedly could be wrong but am going into this with the assumption that we are entering teotwawki . I know I am paranoid with the thinking process of a prepper on steroids . When I went into the military they gave me a thinking test . Out of a couple of hundred folks or so they pulled four of us out and told us we had the thinking process they were looking for to try out for the Green Berets . This era we are entering doesn't alarm me in the least . I have being preparing for this for years . I can see the alarm some have even on here to even contemplate we are entering teotwawki . Frankly though I don't find that surprising .

Green Berets? Was this Vietnam era, so a draft?

My understanding of the SOF selection, even in Vietnam era Army, was no eval for white side SOF, and a full interview and psych eval for guys in the pipeline for an SMU.

What was the wash out rate for units pulled based on that thinking test? Was there even a Q course back then? I wonder if you served with my uncle, I could get his class number, that would be crazy!

Edited to add: I am literally lifting weights with a Ranger as I type this lol. I saw the above post and asked him about selection in Nam. He launched into a highly technical and acronym filled explanation of current selection, and then some glorious history hahaha. So I learned about military headgear.

I don't know to whom you are referring. However......I do not see what is coming as TEOTWAWKI.......I do see it as a super massive reset. There will still be lots of humans, but many-many things will be different. And how life was and how we knew it, that we will not be going back to. Something will replace what was, but it will be very different.

Could you expand on that? I mean, we have the time.

Im ready to be convinced, but...

WWI and the Spanish Flu killed millions. A lot of Europe was, if not a wasteland, then seriously an economic mess. And yet, almost immediately afterward, technology, economies, health care, the population, all booming.

Im truly curious as to your thinking on this. Your older (I assume) and have seen more than me.

The hydrochloroquine is showing promise as a treatment. It is an anti-inflammatory anti-viral drug in addition to being a malaria treatment Rx. Many folk with severe arthritis are prescribed this drug. It's cheap, it's been around for decades. In the case of covid19 this drug reduces the inflammation of internal organs, to include the lungs. Inflammation of the lungs leads to pneumonia. Even when patients have already developed pulmonary issues, the admin of HClorQn sulfate has resulted in some dramatic turn-arounds in the clinical picture of many patients.

I just don't see this coming at all. there is no food shortage. The problem was a temporary run caused by unprepared idiots and people wanting to buy up all available stock to either hoard or make a profit on by price-gouging desperate people. two things have happened since then. First off most people got stocked up and secondly the stores put limits on things to make sure they could keep up and everybody got what they wanted and now third most people here are hunkered down and not shopping at all. The stores are doing a booming business with their curbside online order and pickup. The thing is about that is that they can't do that s fast as shoppers could. We placed an order Monday to pick up tomorrow (Friday).

I went to the store in a small city about 15 miles away and it was just business as usual there. The shelves were full and they didn't even have restrictions of reasonable quantity purchases. The thing that you have to understand is that we are in general not eating this year's harvest. The grain silos are full, the mills are full and the warehouses are full. There is no concern about this year's harvest. Farming these days is not actually very much a human-powered thing these days so the farmers are at little threat from this virus.

The only possible problem that I see is in the major urban areas. Cities over a million will be the hardest hit. For one thing, they are crowded. The cities are generally run by the liberals and mismanaged because they are more interested in people that don't work or are criminals or illegal aliens than they are their working class, especially blue-collar. citizens. At some point, the nonworking poor are going to start to riot. They will find a reason. they may talk about food shortage but when they riot they steal TVs and such and not food. When that happens things may get really ugly in the places that won't allow their citizens to defend themselves. If it happens in Texas it will start and then end FAST. If you come through the door we can gleefully blow you away!!! All a store owner has to do is lock the door and wait. The same for a homeowner. My yard is fenced and gated. If you come over that fence you are target practice and there will be NO survivors.

I think that the food fear is mostly an urban thing. People in the big cities are so far from the fields and pastures that they don't understand how truly vast our supplies are. Farming isn't big here but there are thousands and thousands of cattle, hogs, chickens, goats, and gardens. If we starve it won't be because there is no food. The megacities are death traps. No food and no water if the power and supply lines go down. Places like NYC where people stack up and are dependent on mass transit are going to be hit hardest by this virus. Farming folks out in the heartland will go almost untouched.

I wouldn't starve to death even if I never set foot in a store again.

I haven't been out since all this hoopla crap started. But I've been told the village shops are faring okay. There have been a number of drongos from the city buying up bog roll but apart from that, the shops here are still stocked. Mind you, it helps being in a small rural community, as the shops are holding essentials primarily for locals first and foremost.

The cities I hear are another story.

In any case, the major supermarkets are starting to put limits in place to stop these dipsticks buying up essential items. Should have done it in the first place. They are laughing though, the amount of profit they're making out of this fiasco is phenomenal.

I think this greatly depends on exactly what is being farmed. Wheat, cotton and soybeans etc I agree with you. But many things are much more labour intensive even these days.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/lond...be-devastating-ontario-farmers-warn-1.5500269

Please note this article is now 10 days old and the Canadian government acknowledged the need for workers and has made provisions since then.

One can also argue that these crops are not staples, which is true, but at the same time we will have a rather unhealthy population if we all only eat flour or products made from flour. Those of us rural can grow our own but this is impossible for millions in the cities.

most people in Britain even out here in a rural area don't have a clue about what grows wild that is edible, if it isn't in a little plastic packet in a supermarket with a label saying what it is.
we have in my location Alexanders, Nettle tips growing now, later on Crab Apples and Black Berries, but most people cannot recognise them.

I would have to be starving to eat a crab apple.

I haven't seen anything in the news, mainstream or otherwise, to make me think folks will be starving in droves anytime soon. Gas prices are low, farmers who can afford to will be buying seed corn and beans. The average age of a farmer in the US is probably pretty high, but younger folks can be trained to farm, just not as efficiently as that older guy.

I hear stories about markets stripped clean, but the accompanying picture is always the TP aisle.

I have an acquaintance who is a lefty environmentalist, and hes drooling at the thought that this could wipe out half the population. Thats been a dream of his for years. But I dont see it.

Here, a 10% fatality rate would be 3k people. That would be tragic, and would effect the local economy severely. There would have to be hard choices made, about burials, properties, etc. But it wouldnt end the town's existence.

3% would insure that everyone was affected, everyone would know someone taken by the virus. A time of sadness, for sure, and still problems with storing and burying the deceased.

Then people would start businesses to fill the gaps, and start making babies pronto.

    My .02 cents.

I think the crab apple tree near me is a hybrid, it dosent taste too bad.
this year nobody will be starving but they are crying out for people to pick this years harvest, so far I haven't heard of any takers, anyway we are in lockdown so there probably wont be, next year there might not be anything to buy its all rotted in the field, that's when the dying time will start.

This virus is mutating. This will be a factor in attempting to come up with a vaccine.

Without a vaccine, this corona virus will keep returning when people return to work. The cycle of viral outbreak => isolate => go back to work => outbreak => isolate => return to work => outbreak, will continue until everyone has had all of the viral permutations or until a vaccine is developed that covers the entire family of viral mutations arising from the original Covid-19.

Another phenomenon that we have yet to see is the Covid-19 spreading into the population of Mexico. There are now over 21 million people living in the greater Mexico City area which is 1,485 square kilometers, or 575 square miles. That is 36,000 people per square mile. These people are packed together and trash often gets piled-up on the streets. Add to this water shortages which curtails being able to continually keep the place clean. When Covid19 infects the overpopulated cities of Mexico, there will be unimaginable chaos and many will flee into the USA.

This is not a perfect response........But it would require 60+ pages for me to respond.
The short (and 100% accurate) answer is that we are well over 100 years of economic illusion. It has been fun, but it was all fake. And there will be a horrific price for humanity to pay for the "Re-Set". Read this, it is not great.....But...

"I think this greatly depends on exactly what is being farmed. Wheat, cotton and soybeans etc I agree with you. But many things are much more labour intensive even these days."

The things that are labor-intensive are basically luxury items like tomatoes and other vegetables that you eat fresh. The staples like wheat, corn, oats, beans, rice and meat products are mass production items. A lot of people these days don't know how to really cook. They can open cans and pop frozen food in the microwave at best. Real cooking is way beyond a lot of people's abilities and even more, they consider things like beans and rice and the various stews, soups and such as pig slop. I have a daughter that is either going to starve to death or get really skinny if hard times hit.

All that I need is enough to get in my first harvest and from there on I can grow enough to eat. I was raised country. I like and eat a lot of simple foods. I have not seen anything to indicate that there is any sort o fshortage of food for a year or two. IF there is any shortage it will be because of a break down in the shipping process.

Precisely. I fail to see how the Novel Covid-19 virus is going to create a world shortage of food, let alone the end of the world. Perhaps the end of the world as a lot of people know it for a year or so owing to the disruption but I personally feel there's a lot of unnecessary panic.

I wonder how many on here have put in are preparing to put In a survival garden this year . I planted mine today . Also have all the supplies I will need to grow next years garden because I don't expect the virus or the economy , or supply chain to be doing any better 12 months from now but actually expect the situation to be much dire 12 months from now . Many of our members may not survive to see 2021 . Unfortunately no matter who says things will be better in a few weeks " that will not make it come true ".

I have been living off my garden the past 3 months when I was unable to get out. I've got winter crop seedlings nearly ready to go in.

I don't think this is going to be dusted and done in the next few weeks, more like a year or so. It will get worse before it gets better however, I don't think it's going to be as dire as a lot of people think. It is simply a matter of adapting and making the best of a difficult situation.

Ok. That article makes an intelligent argument for an economic reset.

It takes a physicist to deal with all the inputs of "the modern economy".

And I'm not one. Im not prepared for a collapse materially, but mentally... Im ok with it. I would feel terrible for people who live a lifestyle that requires todays world to exist, because that lifestyle would go away in a complete collapse.

But I mean, what are you gonna do? Im not the suicidal type. Our ancestors walked around with some sticks and rocks, and they made it. In a way, I would see it as a challenge. I recognize it would be a catastrophe for the world. Im pretty poor. I make my own bread because its cheaper hahaha. I hope I could get by.

There are arguments out there though, I wont link any here, that state that the economy is different now, and money can be printed indefinitely, with runaway inflation controlled by interest rates.

I dont think thats true, but what do I know?

All I know is that tax rates are going to skyrocket when this is over because of the government's trillion dollar packages they keep handing out like candy to the ten groups of trick-or-treaters that infiltrate someone's property lines on Halloween.

While I have not yet planted outside as the ground and raised beds are still frozen almost solid, I have started many seeds indoors. So many I am running out of space rapidly.

I always have a vegetable garden but am expanding it considerably this year just in case. I also have plenty for the next few years because you never know what may happen.

Most of us preppers have put back starchy stuff like dried noodles, rice, and dried beans.
We'd already put canned goods back, but while I was at the grocery yesterday I saw brand name soups that hadn't been touched by the panic people. One brand was wiped-out, this other brand had numerous cans just sitting there. What did I do, I bought them. I love clam chowder, but I also bought some other soups that I like sorta-kinda. I figure that when cooking-up these soups I could just toss some rice in there and get more bulk. I have plenty of rice. I also bought flavorings like butter flavor in a bottle -- just a drop or three will flavor a pot-full of food.

One brand of canned tuna was bought-out. The other plentiful, OK so I bought several cans. These are dated into 2022. Lord knows we'll go through them by then. Already have Spam out the yin-yang.

Panic buyers are buying stupid stuff. Good!

This is the latest just dumped on "ALL" Alaskan.

Effective at 8 a.m. on March 28, all personal intrastate travel between communities is prohibited. Travel for critical needs is allowed, the state said, which includes buying, selling, or delivering groceries and home goods; obtaining fuel for vehicles or residential needs; transporting family members for out-of-home care, essential health needs, or for purposes of child custody exchanges; receiving essential health care; providing essential health care to a family member; obtaining other important goods; and engaging in subsistence activities.

"When you hear, 'hunker down,' 'isolation,' et cetera," he said, "it's to keep people away from each other so that we're not spreading the virus and we're building up time."

The other mandate, which will go into effect at 5 p.m. on March 28, requires that everybody in Alaska - except for those engaged in essential health care services, public government services, and essential business activities - must "remain at their place of residence and practice social distancing."

I basically have several layers of food provisions. Most canned things are for cooking with rather than eating as is for us. We eat a lot of fresh foods and produce. My first line of survival supplies are very simple, Dry Beans, Rice, all the various dried noodle and pasta, canned hams and meats, corn, oats, oils, lard, and spices. then I have enough long storage dehydrated foods for about a month. We have a garden and I fish a lot. I have a freezer and two refrigerators and a generator that will keep them cooled. I have a hundred-pound smoker with sausage racks and 4 shelves that will smoke a hundred pounds of meat at a time. A grain mill lets me make use of dry corn. You can grind it immedialty or make it into hominy and then dry and grinds the hominy. We have wood-burning stoves and rocket stoves not to count the gasoline-powered stoves. An 8quart pressure canner will allow us to put up a lot of food that will keep well. We eat well but very little of it is instant meals that you just heat up or pop in a microwave. Honestly other than the fresh produce we won't eat very differently if things were to go down the tubes.
