I’ve been watching episodes of the reality tv Doomsday Preppers. I’m always surprised that the participants would reveal even small details of their identity, location, plans, training, techniques and tactics. If approached by the producers, would any of you seriously consider an anonymous appearance on this show?

As for me...forget about it. My mantra is silence and secrecy concerning my prepping activities.

    Good morning Skywalker,

Anyone who publicly mentions techniques and/or tactics is far from the advanced-level in the preparedness arena.

If not advanced-level to learn from, one's time is better spent on relaxation and personal preparedness.

I read this post and then pondered about it as I checked my garden after low temperatures for the night . I would give my answer as a maybe but would have to discuss this with the rest of the group . If they offered any money it would help swing the decision . Frankly I am proud of our set up . I haven't watched many of the shows put up for this thread but from what I saw we would put them to shame in preparedness . Anyone that stumbled upon this location would instantly know they were looking at some serious preparedness going on , so my neighbors already know we are preppers . So if our specific location was not broadcast , I would take it into consideration .

Some of the participants on the show seem like serious preppers while others look like they been furloughed from the looney bin.

I could see where this would be a valid thought for most in the prepper community . But it can get to the point preparations can not be kept under a roof . Fortunately for me most if not all my neighbors also prep but perhaps to not as such an level as we do . Our security is also very good . All night armed guard duty on outside the structures is already occasionly implemented . That is ratcheted up as the situation dictates . When I do sleep it is usually fully dressed and ready for combat , that sometimes also includes my boots on .

I suppose that's the difference between prepping in the US and prepping in the UK.
different horses for different courses- is a saying over here.
I tend to try to keep a low profile- as much as possible, polite to my neighbours but not letting them know what i'm doing.
in a SHTF situation I trust no one and act accordingly.

It is television. Everything they do is for ratings. Very little if any of it is real, and the BS they start the show with is ludicrous. " This family (in New York) is preparing for the Yellowstone Eruption." This family is planning for the poles to shift. Then they come up with a BS Preparedness rating for what they are doing.

Would I do it? I would have to be paid a minimum mid six figures. Then I would take the money and move, and nobody would know where.

    Good Morning, Pragmatist!

It’s kind of a shame because some of those show participants have some great weapons, elaborate shelters and nice equipment. Too bad if the rampaging hordes know where to loot because those people decided to reveal everything on Doomsday Preppers.

    Morgan101's response is spot-on.

Producers are marginal humans. Every action they take is to scratch some evil itch.

Saw an interview with a producer of one of these "Marry a Millionaire" shows. He was remarkably candid. This greasy excuse for a human being admitted that he and his mates actively sought-out people with psychological issues to be participants in these psycho-festival shows of theirs. Producers WANT to put on freak shows. They are latter-day P.T. Barnums.

Add to this the reality of these producers being part of the "fellow-traveler" cut. Black-listing is infinitely more intense than that witnessed during the McCarthyism era. If you are not an active collectivist, a person promoting via personal work and financial support to Democratic Socialism, you will NOT have a job in television, the movie industry, nor play any part in the reporting of "the news". The collectivist boardrooms are the cocktail parties to which only the damned are invited. Western media is not just infected with purulent spiritual death, it is willingly infected, indeed it wishes to actively aid the spread of the plague of Spiritual Death currently sweeping this world.

In today's media, all gun-owners are portrayed as idiots or violently evil idiots. Collectivist need all citizens to be reduced to government-dependent sheep, therefore all preppers are portrayed as nut-cases. If you are a rational person prepping for hard times, you would be instantly rejected as a person to become part of their propaganda show. All of their shows are propaganda shows, by the by. To them, all Christians are stupid and thus will never be shown as anyone who could be respected. (I, Old Geezer am not a member of the Christian Religion.) Were Jesus Christ to be found walking the streets of Hollywood, He would immediately be arrested and re-crucified. If any Prophet Messenger of God were to utter a word in support of the lives of the unborn, the media wanna-be gods would douse him with gasoline and burn Him on Hollywood Avenue.

Only begrudgingly do Hollywood & the MSM hand over their child-rapists to the courts systems. They wouldn't even do this were it not for the stench of their damnation becoming so vile that it causes jackals to heave. What else does one need know of their lot.

those reality shows are staged, the shows i watch, mountain men , trappers ect . these guys do not get into trouble. however that does not make for good tv. so they invent stuff like a trapper runs of of gas in the back woods, or they get stuck with a flat tire. Stuff like this does not happen to these old pros.

When you watch these reality SHOWS you have to suspend belief and not think about what you are seeing. It is a SHOW and as such reality isn't a big part of it.

Unfortunately, some of us don't do this very well so instead of enjoying the SHOW we enjoy picking it apart. I especially like the dramatic parts where they are lost or broke down out in the middle of nowhere. You have camera angles for multiple shots on every scene and even aerial views of them as they trudge through the wilderness.

On another one, you had a guy crawling down into a cave on his belly and talking about how dangerous it was because anything could be down in this hole and he couldn't even turn around. The entire time as he crawls you are watching him from in front of him.

The lost walking people are surrounded by a huge camera crew and there are probably several trucks carefully kept out of camera shot. The guy crawling down in the hole has a cameraman right in front of him that has checked it all out and he is NOT the first one to see any of this.

I also like the shows where people that are supposed to be professional survival instructors can't build a fire with a magnesium block and ferrocerium rod. They have a pile of leaves and sticks and are cutting CHUNKS off of the mag block and then scratching the rod hard and fast.

I like some of these shows but half of the fun of watching them is in picking their mistakes apart.

When I’m channel surfing I usually check out the reality show ‘The Real Housewives of (name the city)’. After about 15 seconds of watching that nonsense then I move on to The Jerry Springer show. 15 more seconds of nonsense and then I turn the tv off.

Many Latter Day Saints Church members put back a year's supply of food and prepare for hard times to include possessing firearms and water filters and outdoors equipment and ...

I've had LDS friends and do not find them that "weird" as do others.

If a reality TV show was made about them telling the truth, the show would be boring. But the media lies and hates Christianity in general, so the MSM likes to put-down members of the LDS Church.

The Left is composed of bigots of the worst order. I believe that people are different at birth, but so what. In a free society, those who are capable of being civilized become civilized. "The proof's in the pudding." For the Left, one must not stray from party dogma. A conservative in Hollywood will become blacklisted. Wanna make a movie in which you bring forth conservative themes? Better have your own financing. Hollywood's pervert producers will do everything to crush you.

America will have a reasoned and orderly split-up of states into leftist and conservative blocks. It will be divorce or there will be a protracted reticular violent civil war (the word "chaos" will have to be redefined in dictionaries). There is NOT in this period of American history going to be any unification of the separate camps of Americans. The socialists love bureaucracy, so they can have Washington D.C.. The conservatives respect the military, so they should get the largest share of the current military force to include property easements for access to all of the Pentagon and its needed properties. The USSA would include the Left Coast States with military easements for such harbors as San Diego going to the Constitutional States of America.

Yup. I have neighbors on my west side that are Mormons. They are nice people, but it’s obvious that anyone who isn’t Mormon is a 2nd class citizen.

And if you are married to a non-Mormon, you must convert your spouse. Me, I'm married to a dang papist, Rome, Pope, all that. So far, her priests haven't been able to drive the demons out of me. Isn't that kind'a nuts, because the reason she was attracted to me in the first place was due to my overtly evil behaviors. My pact with Satan? Hey, it's gotten me some rather good jobs over the decades. Holy Water, schmoly water; has no effect on me. I got the waxy water-shedding package with the sale of my soul. And I don't have to wear undergarments blessed by anybody!

As I was siting on my milking stool , milking my goat today I got to thinking about this thread . I agree those reality shows are fake especially those revolving around survival or prepping . It would be much more interesting if they actually went to real prepper retreats . I can see no way they could make much of a dent airing all the preps on our retreat in a thirty minute show . I am sure some of you guys are like that . Just got too much preparations to air in thirty minutes . Apparently it is hard to find a prepper that would consent to being on such a show . So I suppose that is why they get actors to pretend to be preppers .

Last week I called up my neighbor Don to see if he knew anyone who had a rear-tine tiller I could borrow. He said he did and he'd bring it by. When he got here, he had two tillers: one a front-tine little one and the big Bertha. He suggested he use the big one for the deep tilling and I could dress the beds with the little one. Since I have about thirty years on him I agreed.

Don's like most of my neighbors: we help each other, are invited to each others' parties, have dinner from time to time, and so on. We even went hunting last fall (and neither of got a deer). He's the Bishop of the 5th Ward here, Dawn and I are Pagans, and we have no problem with each other's faith.

When one of the neighbor's kids went on his Mission last November, we went to the Farewell service (and the party afterwards). By the way, his mom is LDS (dad is a Methodist), and he plays on the Ward's softball team.

I've lived here in Kimberly (which is about 60% LDS) for two+ years and have never felt like a second-class anything.

Kimberly is at 3900 ft MSL. Are you implying that Mormons, I, or both have undergone mind alteration? In my case, not since I switched to wine in the 1980's!

    Good morning Duncan,

An interesting post - illuminating and important to me.

I am fascinated how we here at the Forum use different words that might be conveying similar meanings to other, otherwise antagonistic words.

Dawn and you are atheists. I hold myself out as "secular" - although I am not.

Others here presented words and beliefs that the divinity schools would get headaches trying to contemplate within their Aristotelian logic.

I am pleased and grateful that you, of all my colleagues here, consider my post of some value.

Indeed! In my younger and more foolish years at U of MD, my undergraduate degree was English; I have always been an aspiring word-mechanic and lovers of the niceties of language. One word which comes to mind when looking at the instability of meaning is 'cult'.

There are, I believe, five or six meanings of the word accepted as valid by both linguists and theologians; one of the more scholarly is synonymous with a particular religious belief, e.g. the cult of Dionysus, the cult of Marianism. Others are 'someone who is not a Christian'; 'someone who is not a Protestant'; 'someone who is not a Christian/Jew/Muslim (and their various iterations); 'someone who is/is not a pre-millennial dispensationalist"; etc. Two of my favorite (non-theological) meanings would be "some group who disagrees with me" or "some group which hasn't elected a Congressman yet".

    The mind boggles.

Au contraire, mon ami; I must take issue. Pagans -- a motley lot, I admit -- are not atheists per se; we are simply those who do not accept any of the three Abrahamic faiths: Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. If asked, we say we follow the Old Religion as exemplified by various northern European groups before the Roman conquest (given that some of our earlier religious ikons predate Christianity -- cf. the Venus of Willendorf -- I believe the term "old religion" is appropriate).

If pressed further, Dawn and I would say we honor the Earth, our Mother, and are grateful for Her gifts to us: each other, our family, our farm, our home. If you will, think Wicca, sans spells and waltzing widdershins in the full moon, although we do celebrate their festivals.

Given that I was educated by the Jesuits, I can hardly debate that!!

    Good morning Duncan,

    Well received.

Had a real good time reading and contemplating above.

A super example re the definition(s) of "cult" !

For years had used word "atheist" as a basic synonym for "pagan" - those belief system followers not relying on a major system's monotheism. I accept the distinctions.

Einstein, Freud and Darwin held themselves out as agnostic.

All the distinctions get blurred by the American proletariat.

There are Wicca houses of worship in areas of rural Tidewater. Some of our firefighters are active in them. Take the Wiccans and the nation's faster growing Astrologists plotted out against the "traditional" churches and the age bracket distinctions show what's going on.
