After a recent rash of posts with topics ranging from the rapture to body image I'm finding the material on survival and survival techniques has been lost somewhere along the way.
I understand that some people feel the need to connect with others but it has passed beyond that to the point where threads are being duplicated and filled with inane comments.
I'm actually waiting for some fool to post a thread entitled "what's your favorite colour."

I'm also finding a great many people are posting information that they are making up as they go along, recently there was someone trying to create the rule of 4 because the accepted version (the rule of 3) didn't seem enough for him. He was claiming that the average person can manage 4 minutes without air, 4 hours without shelter, 4 days without water and 4 weeks without food...THIS INFORMATION WAS WRONG! and was patently foolish and dangerous advice, Misinformation can get people killed. Please stick to what you know, if you're not sure just ask or do some research

There are some forums I am no longer following, they were just filling up my email & the posts are just not worth reading.

He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool, shun him; He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is a child, teach him. He who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep, wake him. He who knows, and knows that he knows, is wise, follow him.

Ignorance is bliss until it is exposed. Only a fool refuses to ask to alleviate their ignorance; and only a bigger fool mocks and disparages a question from one seeking knowledge.

Very well TexDanm, what's your favorite colour? :D

I don't mock people on this forum who I consider to be genuinely seeking information about survivalism or prepping. I will however point out when someone is bullshitting, offering dangerous and illegal advice or trolling another member without even bothering to properly read the post that they're criticising. If they then try and troll me I will cheerfully tell them to fuck off and die.

I don't give a rats ass what age, sex, colour or creed a person is...I'm not interested in playing favourites. I don't care if they're ex university, military, blue collar, still in school or absolutely unemployable as long as they use the brain in their head when they're writing something that they expect me to take notice of. I can try to correct a mistake or misinformation, I wouldn't try to correct others opinions and I can't do anything at all about bloody minded stupidity.

To put it simply, if this forum is allowed to fill up with misinformation and mistakes they will continue to circulate on the internet...probably killing and injuring future generations of Darwin Award candidates.

I like blue. I also agree about bullcrud and am very aware of the danger of misinformation. But ignorance is hard to tell from stupidity a lot of time. I have a lot of patience for ignorance as long as they are seeking to alleviate it. Stupidity I pity because for them there is no hope. The people that annoy me at the ignorant that seem to be proud of their ignorance and the ones that feign ignorance just so they can annoy people.

We seem to have a few of those on board right now. I suspect that some of them are borderline autistic and just have no social skills but others may be just doing it for fun. If someone ONLY makes negative posts they expose themselves and that is what moderators are for. Being annoying on the other hand is just the way some people are at times. I KNOW that at times I annoy people but I don't do iy on purpose; I just don't always express myself in the most genteel fashion. Also manners and speech patterns and bluntness vary greatly from place to place.

One of the things that the internet has exposed is that there are a lot of people that are closet Nillests. They love to tear down anything that others want to build. They can do this on the net because they are anonymous and don't get their buttocks kicked like they would out in the real world. I think that the human species needs a period of survival of the fittest to eliminate these people. In a real world they will have "accidents" if they won't work with the tribe. There won't be many opportunities for them to play their sick games and so eventually they will get caught and eliminated.

If a person continually starts fights and disagreements in my group and makes everyone work harder because they always seem to be pulling to wrong way in every effort I will tend to the problem myself. These people are like a mad dog. You don't chase a dog with rabies away. You don't want them out there spreading their disease or coming back to bite you in the back of your legs.

One of the reasons that I feel pretty sure that some sort of collapse is coming is because our current culture has not just allowed these people to survive and thrive; we almost seem to encourage them. Every generation has more and more sick destructive people and in the way we educate and entertain our kids we almost teach them this sick stuff. So many of the video games are about the glory of being violent and antisocial. Criminals and thugs are heroes now. The messages in so many of the things that are called music now are sick and violent.

For me it is hard to see separating people and understanding them from survival since in a TEOTWAWKI situation other people will be both our biggest threat and our only hope for a life again about more than just living another day.

If I have annoyed you I'm truly sorry and had no intention to do so.

PS: I am a writer and so typing is for me little more taxing than talking so my posts tend to be longer. I know that this is also annoying to some people but on the flip side I hate twitter and such because the short quips are uninformative and boring to me.

I tend to write far too much and then edit with a heavy hand. I try hard to be clear and concise but I have to work at it. I'm not a natural writer.

I know that I am new here, too; but I would be willing to help with moderation if I can. I know that it has to be a difficult job because people all have their own lives to take care of, and the moderators can't always be here to catch it when someone makes one of those senseless (or dangerous) posts.
I helped moderate on a similar forum, and what we did was read the posts of each new person every day for up to the first week. If they wrote silly posts, the posts were deleted, and the writer was warned. If they continued to write something that did not add value to the forum, then they were banned.
I am a senior lady, and I am home most of the time, and would have the time to help with a project like this if it would make the forum work better again. There has to be a line between not getting any new members, and getting a whole bunch of useless ones that just post for the sake of writing something.

Tumbleweed, you have a wise head on your shoulders and I respect everything you've posted so far. You would be so much better at moderating than me.

i try to moderate as often as possible and remove all the spam as soon as I see it, but not even mods can be on here 24/7, and I have another forum to take care of also.

Fortunately as we live at opposite ends of the earth, we are at different time zones. We ought to be able to manage it between us.

@TexDanm (or anyone else who can)
This may be slightly off topic but can you pls explain the term nillests I have not heard for it before
As for the rest we can all do our part hitting the report button and posting the right information and calling them out
As already said they're stupid and ignorant people out there and their is no talking to them as they will never understand anything (or be part of our group )
But the other group of people are the gullible ones we can help them
give them the right info they might be the ones posting bad info as some gobshite have convinced them it right so explain to them the correct information so not only do they know it but can explain it to the x person they tell if they don't listen and understand then they are part of the first group of the stupid and ignorant people and should be called out (it can be hard to tell the difference at first)
But you can't go hard on people for a couple of bad posts inform them of their errors first
Most people come to forums like this to learn so it up to whom every has the knowledge to teach others and when we come together as a group and explain the correct info from different points others who see the threads will see who is posting right info backed by others and who is not
My colour would be green second brown it's why I find woodland so peaceful that and no people

I have not heard of this term nillests before. One could make a guess at its meaning, but no, can't say for sure.

Nill means do nothing....zero....none...A nillest is someone that never creates anything, never makes much in the way of a contribution to anything but is first in line to complain about, criticize or tear down anything that anyone else tries to make or do. Online they are often called trolls.

    ni·hil·ism
    [ˈnīəˌlizəm, ˈnēəˌlizəm]
    NOUN
    1. the rejection of all religious and moral principles, often in the belief that life is meaningless.
      synonyms: skepticism · negativity · cynicism · pessimism · disbelief · unbelief · agnosticism · atheism
      • philosophy
extreme skepticism maintaining that nothing in the world has a real existence.
      • historical
the doctrine of an extreme Russian revolutionary party c. 1900, which found nothing to approve of in the established social order.
I'm not sure where I got this. I read a lot of old and archaic stuff and do seem to occasionally just throw out something that is no longer in common use. I'm also pretty bad about using Texasisms and old things from the past that are not common anywhere but the old South.

I have a lot of patience with ignorance. The more you know the more you know that you are ignorant. No matter how much you learn you just discover even more things that you know nothing about. On a board like this the one thing that really bothers me is someone that is spreading nonsense as if it is facts. Some of this stuff could get someone hurt or killed if they didn't learn or know any better. We all make mistakes and I make way more than my share but most things that I say I KNOW from experience or research in depth.
