Thanks for the article. Been a lot of years since I used a plane bamboo pole to fish. Might be fun to do again.

Just like most things now in the USA, sport fishing has gone "high tech" and fishing poles all have mechanical reels and are made out of stuff like fiberglass, graphite, carbon fiber, etc and cost $$$$. Many of us grew up before that began and I (we) used cane poles with the line tied to them to learn to fish. It was a simpler way and brings back good memories.

I've used both types...with and without reels on them.

I used the olde fashioned way with the line simply tied to the end of the pole...

And I have also fastened an olde yard sale reel to the pole with hose clamps and installed a simple eye through which I ran the line onto the end of the bamboo pole.

Mind you now..this was not a full length p0le but it sufficed and caught many a fish.

The key operative word for me here is simplicity.

Bamboo is to be found all across this country...

For those capable of DYI...it I simplicity itself.

I have a bunch of tiny screw in eye bolts. With those I can make a rod from any fairly limber and straight rod. I also would whittle a spool and then could cast. We don't have a lot of cane around here and a long wood pole is too heavy.

The Southern fellows who were fishing with "tannerite" were actually using "homemade tannerite" which is likely not spot-on tannerite chemistry.
    I'll let others explain:

Grow your own fish. Feed them dogfood. Net them when desiring fish for supper. Have a mountain stream to tap for your pond? If so, how lucky you are.

    Yes..indeed...

My ham radio friend out in Tennessee has a pond fed by a stream and is damned up at one end.....with an overflow culvert in place.

He is planning to stock fish into his pond....
He currently has some trout in there ….

    Indeed how lucky he is.

I hope to catch him this weekend via long range ham radio. We usually converse for half an hour to 45 minutes and catch up on the latest. We are not phone a holics...but prefer the two way radio. It is the olde school in us.

Knew a couple who did this. It was bizarre throwing a fistful of dog food into that pond. The result was something out of a horror Piranha movie. Gone fishing with my grandpa a bunch, but never caught the fishing bug. Love fish, but let others catch them. Lazy me.

Can also be done in a greenhouse. Aquaponics is a great way to raise fish/crayfish/shrimp as well as raise vegetables. I like raising red claw crayfish along with another species as then I have food and a sellable product (freshwater lobster). New greenhouse in the plans for next spring.
