    Good morning all,

It is an urgent matter for urban dwellers to place immediate attention on dangers of rats.

With the restaurant trade operating at a low level (eg take-out orders only), rats are in search of food supplies.

    Article tells about this.

I do not have rat problem here in a rural area. I still use moth balls (camphor) in truck's covered cargo section and in some of my bins , duffels and pouches.

A few years ago Washington, D.C. had a rat eradication program. The wackos threatened to go to court if the city killed the rats. The city government conceded and arranged to capture the rats and let them go outside the city limits. Outside the city limits is Virginia. Virginia's Attorney General, Ken Cu___ (can't spell; now a senior DHS official), threatened court action. Forgot results because was laughing for weeks.

put out fat balls and you'll soon have rats.
its always been said that in a UK city you are only ever a maximum of 3feet from a rat, cities have plenty of waste and rubbish for rats to feed on.

Rat poison isn't catastrophically expensive. Bate them. Nuke them.

Use fat balls made of used kitchen grease to draw them in.

My grandmother asked me which antifreeze killed cats. I told her. Weeks later, "That antifreeze you told me about didn't kill a single one of those dang cats!" A friend of mine used to shoot cats for his grandmother. As an adult, he'd shoot kittens to get rid of them and just for the fun of it.

Rats can acclimate to most commercial rat poisons. If possible buy a poison that includes zinc phosphide. This is mixed with a food common to the rats so they will gorge on it (unlike commercial baits) and then the rats stomach acid converts the zinc phosphide to phosphine gas, and kills the rat quickly. Rats can also be poisoned with high doses of vitamin D2. Crush into a powder and mix with a fatty bait. Very careful with this as all mammals are subject to be poisoned this way.

Rats can also be killed by dropping dry ice CO2 into there holes or a CO2 fire extinguisher. Both ways suffocate the rats. A non-legal method is to place plumbers lye (Red Devil Lye here in the states) in the rats holes. They walk in it, then lick there feet and die.

FYI - Commercial baits fail usually because rats won't feed normally on anything they are not familiar with. They eat a small amount and see if they get sick before feeding normally on any new food. The do this because they can't vomit. What goes in a rat only comes out one way. Anticoagulants only kill when a set amount is eaten and limited amounts cause most rats be stressed (feel bad) and refuse further baits.

I really like the dry ice idea, never thought about it. It will also kill whatever critters inside the sewer too by depraving them of oxygen

Yes it will. Just remember high concentrations of CO2 flow down hill and any neighbors at the bottom of the hill will have the CO2 come up any open pipes that don't have traps in them. People have been accidentally killed that way. Any air breathers along the CO2 route will die.

In an effort to keep mice and rats down to an absolute minimum I burn all food scraps other than vegetable scraps, which get fed to the chickens. All other food is kept in containers or in the fridge/freezer, so i don't have anything to lure the little blighters.

Mice + rats = snakes, which I hate with a passion. So the less mice and rats I have around the place, the better. Boom, boom!

Dale - Hopefully they should be going to sleep now. It's getting freaking cold here now! But yes, no food, no mice/rats, no snakes. That's the theory, anyway.

Here is an idea in how to getting rid rat infestation. Just release some constrictor snakes into the city sewer and let them eat all those rats. Problem solve on the cheap, not to mention feeding the snakes with good food.

The worse thing that could happen WHEN the snakes get bigger (due to abundant of food) is they might attack (or eat) human. Such tragedy should be taken as acceptable collateral damage rather than having rat infestation that might led to disease outbreak :)

Years ago....some college educated sophisticated individual/politician in India decided they had a cobra problem....and urged people to go about killing off the cobra snakes...

Soon enough ...after this college educated political decision they got overrun with rats....go figure. Must have been an Ishmaelite.

In Newport News Shipyard they solved the rat problem over time..by spaying and neutering cats and building a limited number of them homes in this shipyard...

Soon enough they got a handle on the rat problem. You hardly see a rat anymore. They work cheap too!!

At one time you did not leave your paper bag lunch out or the rats would take it ...they so infested the waterfront and support shops.

Now you hardly see or hear of a rat....and no more poison's..

    Watcherchris,
    Not an Ishmaelite.
