Many are the times hitherto law abiding citizens find themselves in prison cells usually as a result of misdemeanors like tresspass or drunkenness. There was a time I was arrested over the former together with my brother though it was a case of mistaken identity. In the cells, you are likely to find hardcore criminals like carjackers and murderers who might pick on you. Cases of sodomy or other forms of brutalization have been reported. How would you survive in such a situation?

One of my friends found himself in jail for some crime he didn't commit. He told me that one day some prisoners tried to rape him. Apparently it's something one should expect when they are locked away but he fought the would be rapists, got beaten up pretty badly in the process but there were on attempts to rape him from then on.

To be safe in jail you need to present yourself as tough. It doesn't mean that you go round threatening people or breaking prison rules. Since inmates and prison guards prey on weakness you must show them all that you aren't weak.

Universal advice for any dangerous situation, but in this case, at least we have a considerable degree of control on whether we end up there. At least when you live in a country with somewhat trustworthy police and justice system, that is. It seems that prisons in the US are, for some reason, much more brutal places than in other rich countries? Not that those other are nice places - well, expcept Norway maybe (anyone remember the sickening story about Breivik on hunger strike for a better Xbox?).

There was a local movie that I have seen a long time ago. It's about the hero who was mistakenly accused of a crime. He landed in jail. And since he is the hero in the movie, he would fight anyone in the cell. But he would always be beaten black and blue. And yes, the sodomy is common in prison. I wonder how those guys feel being sodomized. That's a good movie because it serves a moral lesson that committing a crime does not pay and being in jail is like hell.

If I would be in jail, maybe I have to suffer everything there is to suffer because I would teach myself to be meek all the time. It's no use fighting an established system where the veteran jailbird is the boss and the newbie is the slave. Even in the movies, that system works well and even the hero cannot fight the system.

I've seen enough tv/movies to have an idea on what goes on inside prison cells and it seems the only way to survive is to act all tough and rough otherwise you'll be sexually assaulted and beaten up before your first day is over. Then again, prisoners seems to form a gang inside, and if you're new, you're in trouble no matter how tough you look. It seems luck is your only hope of staying sane inside prison cells.

I actually went to jail for a fight that happened between me and an old man, I didn't even start it, but anyways. I had to go to jail, I was all alone for literally the first day, then Valentines day came, there was 1 drunk guy, one man who was mentally unstable, he talked to himself, 1 crazy dude who was in there for something irrelevant but he tries to act hard by yelling at the guards because they did not want to give him a cup of water, and then there was 1 guy who got arrested on his birthday, he said that he stole a car and joy ride threw the neighbor hood where he stole the car.

All of those guys were not that bad, but I actually had a good time, we were all different but made conversation as if we all were friends outside jail. I guess it just depends on everyone in the cell.

I would think it would be best to try everything possible to not get into jail.
Now I understand that some people end up in jail even though it was not their fault.
No matter what you have to stay strong at least appear that way from the outside and not show any weakness or else you are really doomed.
You have to make sure you do not become a target. If you meet jail mates who are open for mutual discussions then you are very lucky but
most of the time that will not be the case and you will have no other choice than to protect and defend yourself by pretending to be stronger/tougher than you really are.

I obviously try to stay away from jail at all costs. I did get arrested once and spent one night there. Jail is pretty mild in most places in the United States. Prison is a whole different story because those criminals are usually spending anywhere from 6 months to life sentences and many of them have been there before. Again, I agree with other posters who say the best way to survive jail or prison is to not end up there in the first place. I was always told the best strategy is to keep to yourself and not let anyone know you have access to anything (including money) from the outside.

Obviously the easiest thing is to stay away from illegal things, and stay out of prison. And if you're talking about specifically prison over jail, you have to do something really bad to go into prison anyhow. I think once you're there, it's best to just keep to yourself. If someone tries to mess with you, I think you have to stand up for yourself, but besides that, I think you just try your best to not do anything to draw attention. If you can just manage to serve your time in peace, and get out, you'll be way better off.

From the Australian experience, jail is not like the bloody movies.
Very high aboriginal population, rape, homosexuality rife, not that much violence really apart from racism reasons, drug use very high, boredom is the biggest issue mixed with shit loads of mental illnesses.

Been there done that. I took the star-shaped knob off of a urinal (Don't even ask how!!!) and put it in a sock so when they turned out the animals and put us all together I was fully ready when the bulls came sniffing around. The biggest one came to me and demanded my cigarettes. Back then they let you keep your smokes. I told him to ****off. He bowed up I waved my star in his face and asked if he was ready to meet Jesus today and that was pretty much the end of that. When breakfast was served I went to near the front of the line. I wouldn't eat that slop so I gave it to a little skinny guy that was near the back of the line. After that he hung close to me and watched my back for me. Always better to be as near the top of the food chain as possible. I KNEW what to do thanks to friends in low places.

There are only two kinds of people in the bullpen, the prey and the preditors. When I was thrown into the group the biggest top end of the food chain came to "ask" me which I was going to be. You don't have to win the fight but you HAVE to be willing to fight. that big monster could have probably taken me but why get hurt when there are so many others that will just give you what you want? If I had been there for several days we would have had to have a go-to establish pecking order but right off the bat, I established which end of the pecking order I was going to be on.

The good news for me was that I got bailed out before that was necessary and I determined right THEN that a life of crime was not for me!!! My 18 hours in that jail for misdemeanor possession of marijuana was my one and only trip to the hoosgow. I was much more careful who I hung out with and where after that. It was a learning experience!

God forbid i would go to prison i'm a small guy and a target....

i would try either of these two approaches though...

    1. become the craziest and most violent person there and attack anyone who approaches me friendly, guard or not in the hopes that i would get put into PC(alone 23 hours a day)never shower either...

    or

    2. go on a hunger/water strike pronto and get put in medical under watch and never come out...

don't know how well 2 would work but 1 might...

The thing about prisons is that they are not all the same. I live in one of the biggest prison towns in the US. We have 9 big prisons here. My wife worked for 25 years in the prisons, my Daughter now has 12 years done. Most of my friends work in prisons. In Texas we have several different levels of prisons and levels of incarceration and don't mix the levels too much. It goes from death row and the supermax which is cages where they spend 23 hours a day to the trustee camps that don't even have walls or fences. Most of the prisoners have a job and go to work then come "home" and have off time with various recreational activities.

If you are a problem you get tossed into a prison full of problem people. Those places can be rough. The trustee camps are sort of like college dorm living and not all that bad. The odds of you getting killed in a Texas prison are less per capita than in any average large city. the violent inmates have a hard time assaulting anyone when they are locked in a tiny cage 23 hours a day and then only allowed out to get air in a bigger outdoor cage ALONE. If you kill someone in prison you could spend the rest of your life alone in a cage. For many, death is a relief more than punishment after spending 12 or 14 years on death row.

Prison in texas is sort of what you make of it. You can go to school and get an education. You can learn a trade. For many it is the first stable home that they have ever had. You would be surprised how many of them look at parole sort of like we do going on vacation. They have fun and they are not to disappointed when they catch a parol violation and come home. If you were raised and lived in a drug and crime-infested ghetto a nice clean prison with three meals a day a clean safe bed at night and free or nearly free dental and health care isn't such a bad place. THAT is sad.

most people in UK prisons are criminals because they don't work, by that I mean the criminals don't work and neither do the prisons, people are given so many chances, in some cases hundreds of chances before they even see the inside of a prison.
most of them its either burglary, shoplifting or drugs and sometimes all three.

    Two points
    1. Just a bit of humour, if they (the Amercans) can't take humour then they won't survive a survival/TEOTWAWKI situation...thats when you need humour to help you through...laughing in the face of death and all that.

    2. I work with a lot of yanks from all over the US of A and overall they are a bit slow picking up on humour, not as quick witted as brits, but they get it in the end bless them. That said, the lads from the NE coast, NY, Boston etc are fast thinkers, they can dish it out and take it with the best of us (and for some reason pick up and use brit slang) so I don't think I offended anyone here.

Talking of things American, as my lad has now moved in (2 weeks early, he just turned up) we're having a BBQ American style, I've got liquid smoke, Baby Ray BBQ sauce and I'm making chilli sauce and dips to go with pork ribs, chicken wings, and mini burgers, salad and corn on the cob. With the mini burgers (like flat meat balls) you need fat so I use 70/30 beef/pork and make up different batches, some with garlic and cilantro (thats coriander for the brits here), chilli and curry all washed down with cold Michelob and maybe a couple of Makers Mark over ice this evening. Australians say they make the best BBQs but they don't, Americans do

American humor is a bit different to British humour, as far as I can see it seems to be more lavatorial, I don't understand it myself.
I've had enough of BBQ's to last me a lifetime, neighbours will use firelighters and they stink of paraffin, don't know how anyone can eat stuff after its doused in that.
we have to shut all the doors and windows or it stinks the whole house out.

Paraffin gets the charcoal going and the smell goes, don't mess with the flavour of the food, you certainly don't taste it. Last night I cooked on charcoal but added wood chips. I used cherry and apple wood chips, soak in water for about an hour then add to the BBQ and drop the lid down and you smoke the food a bit, lovely tasting, in fact I might knock together a dedicated smoker, converting a filing cabinet seems a quick option.....food for thought.

Had a great night last night, cooked far too much food and finished off a bottle of Makers Mark and made a start on a bottle of Old Grandad and chilled out watching a TV show thats been recommended to me and very good it is too :)

Back when, I asked a young man who he was paying off. I knew the product he was selling and suffice it to say that it was out of favor in the community and on the law-books forbidden.

He acted stupid / avoided the question. He behavior bespoke, "Nobody."

I told him that his sh## was destined to go weak and soon.

Within a year, the state bureau of investigation came a visitin' the lad. He got one of those all-expense-paid vacations.

The men of my family paid off the right people and never did a day in jail. One of my lot took care of some police business at night that the police couldn't get caught doing, or simply didn't have the stomach for. Ancient wisdom informs us that one must ingratiate himself with the "authorities" if his business is conducted by the light of the moon.

Heads down. I'm nobody. "Sir, could you help is with something?" "Yes."

Concerning the departed, "We've not seen him of late. Do you suspect that misfortune has befallen him?"

    Good afternoon Max,

"American" is a collective proper noun. It's an umbrella term.

A BBQ American style and a - real - BBQ are somewhat different. The key ingredient is "The South".

I've met many from the Northeast, NY and Boston and they were slow thinkers.

Speaking of humor; ...... I can and do recognize British humor. When I learned that British construction codes were of higher quality than the codes in the upstart colonies, I knew you were using humor at its best. Regardless, I contacted the MSF.COM travel agency and arranged a trip to the UK for a few of us Forum Members to attend a construction codes seminar. We were booked for a week at Grenfell Tower and Hillsborough Stadium.

Michelob ? Makers Mark ? Perhaps in Forest Hills, NYC or Marblehead, Mass. When we have our annual MSF wagon train encampment and it's held south of D.C., you'll appreciate Booker's straight bourbon whiskey. Beer, I concede, no longer decent like the old days that I only heard about.

Uncle Sam was kind enough to show me what a bad incarceration would be like (SERE). I never cross that legal line and know to keep my mouth shut. Always! Never talk to law enforcement without the presence of a lawyer/legal counsel. I'm a retired Federal Park Ranger, but will tell anyone. Keep your mouth shut until legal counsel is present. You have the right to remain silent. Use it!

Otherwise, the life you ruin, will be yours.

Grenfell? Asses still waiting to be kicked over that fluck up, Hillsborough was over 30 years ago, tragic event :( Building codes in UK/EU tend to be much stricter than in the USA, certainly our electrics is a lot better. Offshore platforms are getting standardised pretty much these days in terms of Health & Safety but talking to some of the 'old timers' the American rigs had a really bad rep for safety regs back in the day but things are way safer these days.

Bourbon? I confess I enjoy spirits in general although I don't drink on a regular basis and there are some good Bourbons to be had, Booker's is a good one. Today is a UK Bank holiday and my sip tonight will be Cles Des Ducs XO.

Eaten BBQ in Newark when I stay with a mate and his family and they are very good, Texas is better, they eat more meat with fat :)

PS: I deep fried a Turkey US style back in 2017 turned out good.

    Good morning Max,

My second home is Hong Kong.

I love the - real - Brit foods....although accept that they're leaving the scene and being replaced by Spaghetti House and MacDonalds.

US (US built and flagged) offshore rigs have decent safety regs. The safety - and environmental - regs are seconded to revenue if operating in US waters. Couple this to few inspectors.

I am now in the mood for kippers and eggs with marmalade on toast. This is history.

My cousin went to prison for a year. Was in Statesville, IL. He claimed to not see the gay shit, but he did see the homos. He kept to himself mostly. Was a pretty tough guy and very street smart. He said life in a cell was like living in a walk-in closet.

What I learned about prison was from my cousin and a book I am reading called Violence of Mind by Varg Freeborn. Freeborn went to prison all for protecting himself. Since he said that if you don't have enough money for a good lawyer and a jury, you're pretty much shit out of luck. And he said that all plea bargains end in a prison sentence of some form. He described the prison rats as the "wolves" and he said that if y0u want to get into a fight then a "wolf" is just right around the corner ready to oblige.

Freeborn was young back then when he went to prison. This could have been in the early 90s. I can't remember now what decade, but he never described rape crap. A lot of that you see in movies and what have you. But how you end up sticking your ass in the air is by sure intimidation. So a wolf will threaten you and you either fight or die or be raped. Another ploy is by "loaning" shit. You enter prison and a wolf offers you a free cigarette. Well guess what? That so-called "free cigarette" will cost you to do something or other. So don't accept shit from people that are offered "free." When my cousin was in prison he said he never seen so much trading and bartering in his whole life. They'll trade Top Ramen (dehydrated noodles) for this or that, a coke for this or that, etc.

My cousin tried to get his GED while in the can, but every damn time they'd catch an asshole with a shank and so the whole prison goes on lock down for it and so he couldn't attend class. How the hell these people make this shit is truly remarkable and very creative.

But I'm hear to tell you, it's not so much your inmates you have to watch out for, it's the damn prison guards, etc. And Epstein didn't kill himself. #ClintonBodyCount

I was merely stating that this forum is American in nature, the owner is an American and most of the Members are American but not all of them, so it tends to have a US bias on the threads.
I made the comment because I thought one of our UK members was being a bit rude to our American members but it may have been "tongue in cheek".
I myself am English and live in the UK.
