Vehicles, such as cars, bikes, motorbikes and similar are extremely useful in survival situations that require us to travel big distances.

Me and my partner have two cars; one that I use for my personal needs and one that he does. My car is an Opel Corsa D 2012. It is great for the area where we live which is still somewhat close to the city. My partner drives a Mazda CX 5 2015. Besides the two cars, we also have two bikes for each of us. Nothing fancy though. We also have an electric scooter that can go up to 100KM/H.

So, do you have any vehicles? If yes, which? If no, why not?

No, because I don't know how to drive. I also felt scared of seeing people dying on the streets because of car crash accident. I would rather be a passenger than a driver if ever I would own a vehicle.

Wait, have you actually seen somebody die from the car accident or it's just your fear of happening? Either way, you shouldn't fear at all. Yes, driving can cause accidents but you can also walk down your stairs, fall and break a leg... that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use the stairs. I think driving is a good skill to have.

@Neiltarquin that's very nice! What kind of car are you planning on buying? We always buy the used cards because the brand new are too expensive... we've had loadsa luck so far. Our previous car was also used and it lasted far longer than it should :)

I used to own a Suzuki bike. I loved it got me anywhere. Every since I moved back with my parents I don't have it anymore since I had to sell it. I really value bikes over cars. Fuel consumption, maintenance cost, style beats most cars any day.

I personally do not own a car, but my uncle has a car which I cruise around in with my friends. The model of the car is Honda Bullet. Although I love cars, especially the fast cars, I am thinking of buying a Kawasaki power bike. I've loved the bike since I was a kid and besides, the bike is more economical than a car.

Currently not really. Owned a couple of cars in the past and with me constantly moving around it's moot point to own one anymore. I just lease, Uber and public transit for the most part. Gonna get a motorcycle though. Those are fun and I have been licensed to be able to ride them for several years but haven't had the chance to really settle down to justify purchasing one since I'd also like to work on it as well.

Yes, living off grid in this day & age you need to have motorised transport, though if things were to change, I would have no problem with using a horse & cart.
We have three 4WDs, one which remains on the property for work purposes, & two for on & off road use. We need to have 4WDs out here as our roads are dirt & we have creeks to cross to reach the tarmac. My wife has a Toyota Hilux with a hard canopy, & I have a Triton. The work vehicle is a Lada.

No vehicles since I live in the middle of the city and I can get public transportation like cabs or buses easily here. Also, I don't really see the need for me acquiring a vehicle since I'm mostly home and if I get a car (which would have a serious dent in my bank account), I would not be using it a lot and it will mostly end up collecting dust and having its engine and other parts degrade in time because of non-usage. It's a lot easier for me to hail a cab, and it would be cheaper too compared to shelling out a ton for a new car.

    1. omegaman
But if SHTF, cabs are gonna be hard to catch, Maybe a scooter or something? Just suggesting.

I have a 2004 Vauxhall Agila 12oocc utility type vehicle-the back seats go down and I use it like a van, its very fast and small enough to get through the deep dark Devon lanes without having to stop for vehicles coming the other way, apart from Tractors!
wife has the same only her's is the 1000cc model.

We have two ford trucks, one SUV and one Sedan I also have two or three boats. I sold my Motorcycles years ago but am looking at them again. I would like a smaller scrambler type that is street legal but has some off road abilities.

I tend to prefer older vehicles. I pay cash for a car or truck that has a lot of miles or even a blown motor and then take the money that I saved and often put brand new motors in them. A three or four year old car with a blown motor is worth almost nothing. I have bought a couple for under two thousand buck that after putting in a new motor were worth nearly three times as much as I had invested in them. If you like doing a little mechanic work and have the tools it is actually sort of fun and a great way to have good dependable transportation without spending a lot.

I'm getting too old for all that now days and my wife and I are discussing actually buying our very first brand new car. Maybe for our 45th anniversary of going steady next year.

My boyfriend and I have a car and a truck and two bikes. An 03 Civic a 99 Silverado and a 72 Shovelhead as well as a 05 Ultra. But since I haven't been riding much since our son was born we are thinking about selling my shovel. Im not sure how well any of them would do in a survival situation though. The civic gets amazing mileage but it is really high mileage and probably wont last much longer. The truck runs well but its a rust bucket that we end up putting a lot of money into to keep running. Honestly of everything, the best running thing we have is my bike. Odd that an old AMF runs better than my boyfriends Ultra. But to be fair, it was passed down to me from my father, and he did a lot of work to it.

Scarlet I have seen a few deaths from road traffic accidents but the ones that really upset me most are the avoidable ones, the ones that should have been foreseeable but were caused by stupidity and negligence.

Agreed! When you apply for a firearms licence over here you have to pass a written safety test & a manual one. To get a vehicle licence you only need to know the road rules. I think the anti-gun lobby would do more good for public safety if they petitioned for a better safety vehicle test. There are far more people killed on our roads than there are in firearms incidents!

I think most people cant drive anymore as they are too reliant on parking assist and not being able to judge the size of the vehicle they are driving
Hell you don't even have to think of breaking now as a computer will do it for you
And dont worry about the white line on the middle of the road your seat will vibrate if you cross it they be hard seen when your an idiot
    And that's without drink involved
Cars might be smarter but people are getting more stupid and more dependent on some computer doing it for you
I wonder is there an app to light a fire in the wilds

Until I bought my Dodge...the last vehicle I bought was my Ford. I am one of those people who will drive a vehicle for 20 years and just keep up the maintenance. I plan to own my Dodge til I die. I bought my Jeep when I was in high school...so, lord I have had that for 35 years. My wife's Audi is a lease. She leases a new car through her medical practice (she is a trauma surgeon) every 3 years because the hospital she works for pays for it...so why not right?

Nothing rusts in AZ, so as long as you keep up the maintenance...vehicles won't rot out on you like they do in the eastern US.

Yes, I know what you mean. When I first arrived in Australia I got a hearse, great for sleeping in, but for driving off road it was not so good. So travelling as I was at the time looking for work, I bought an old Toyota SWB 4wd. I loved that car & would still have it if my brother-in-law had not sold it whilst we were away!!!
I went all over in that Tojo, took it places other people probably wouldn't think of going. I gunned it & drove it out from under the rubble after cyclone Tracey in 74, & went hunting for food. Wish I still had it.

KSL Desktop CJ Collage.png I bought my old Jeep when I was in high school. I was raised on a working horse and cattle ranch and I worked in our family's service station as well. The Jeep came in for a major repair...the man who owned it had beat it nearly to death. The body was good, but he had burned out the clutch and blown the engine. After we did a complete rebuild on the engine...he didn't pay the repair bill and it sat for nearly six months. My grandfather kept trying to work with the guy and offered him payment plans, etc...all of them were ignored. Finally, my Grandfather put in a mechanic's lien on the Jeep, then filed a title claim. I had some money saved and I bought it.

I drove it through high school and through college. When I graduated from the police academy I bought a used GMC pickup that had air conditioning which was a luxury, but I kept my Jeep. I put it in my garage and didn't drive it for quite a while other than to move it out of the garage to work on something...etc. After a few years, I thought about selling it so I cleaned off all the accumulated dust and remembered how much I liked it...so I kept it.

We added another 4WD to our collection, this one a single cab manual Triton Diesel. This is mostly used on the property but is occasionally used for picking up stuff in the city. This replaces the 4WD Lada Niva, though we still have the Niva. We are very pleased with it's performance off road.

I have one car, one SUV, one F150 Truck and one Ford Ranger truck. All are old with a lot of total miles but also two have less than 30,000 on this engine. I keep a body as long as it is solid and just drop a new engine when I have to. My SUV has 160,000 but only 30,00 on the motor and the trany is brand new. The Ranger has 237,000 but the engine only has 25,000 miles. I got over 200,000 out of the first motor. My F-150 has 115,000 on the original motor but all I do with it is pull my boat. The car has 130,000 on the original motor and we are thinking about using it (selling it) for part of a down payment on a brand new Small SUV with a towing package. We never have less than three vehicles and I'm thinking about another motorcycle. I'm getting to old to drop motors and mechanic much so we are probably going to move towards newer vehicles.

Military truck! Runs on diesel, gas or cooking oil it’s like driving a tank. Most used as troop carriers. Also, they are emp proof. Not sure on granite walls, but it will go just about anywhere! A lot of preppersand survivalist have them. Also, great for tax write off as a farm truck!

Look them up on eBay, gov planet, Craigslist.

We used to call then Deuce and a halfs. They have tandem duals in the rear and big singles up front and are ALL wheel drive. Hang a snorkel on one of them and they really will go almost anywhere. They were big in Vietnam. Think of a WW2 Half Track except with tires instead of tracks on the back.

nope, you wouldn't get them down our country lanes, 1 car wide and the aforementioned granite walls and deep ditches either side, many a vehicle has come to grief on those granite walls, okay maybe for our moorland national park which is open country.

all the back country roads have walls made from stone, in this case granite as this is the local stone, it is found naturally here, Dartmoor national park has granite "tors"-stone outcrops which can be seen for many miles.
all our rural roads are very narrow-1 car wide- usually with grass growing in the middle, and very deep with high hedges, the other side of this are the granite walls, many people have crashed their vehicles into these walls thinking its only a hedge with serious results.

The British army run a Scania based 6x6. I see quite a few around Wales and Hereford. They can make their own road if they need to.;)
