Blitz, now that you've gone to the county mounties, you might as well talk to the press.

I know what my folk would have done. And if the police got into it. It would not be safe for the police to be out at night.

Know that the press in on the side of the animal rights activists. The press loves it when the people live in fear. College professors and news executives want the people cowering so that Big Brother can take care of things for "the little people".

    "... ruined my fun."

    My heart sinks.

I'd tell you to get a pump shotgun but the socialist gov. of Australia needs to keep you folk under subjugation.

Here's a sonic protector. You need to attempt to keep them further away than any cattle prod can do. Once they are in on you, it is too late. Sprays always get back on you (had a chat years back with a deputy who worked the county jail).

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Sound-Def...fense+K9+Warning+Device&qid=1590583486&sr=8-1

This dang thing is rather expensive $62, but that's below $160.

Look for other sound defense products. Dogs have hearing that is far superior to ours. That can work for them. That can work against them.

But do they actually work Gold Geezer? I remember some years ago I bought some sound device to keep mice and rats away. It did absolutely nothing.

Blitz: Here are couple of items that might fit the budget a little better. You could provide your own stick or get one complete.

I just thought of another possibility. Is it still legal to buy a water pistol? Way back when in a prior life when I was delivering newspapers on a bicycle there were some stray dogs that were very territorial. We used to carry water pistols filled with ammonia. Nobody complained but it was a good deterrent. I wouldn't think in this case anyone would be terribly concerned about the dog.

Thanks Morgan. That's an interesting idea. Yes, you can buy water pistols here, though they aren't shaped like traditional pistols anymore (couldn't possibly have kids playing with pretend guns, it might create mass murderers when they grow up). They're all space type guns, rather big, bulky and awkward but I'm sure I could find something suitable to put under a belt that was easily accessible.

Gosh, I don't know, Blitz. I don't know what to say, what with your living under a repressive regime that considers animal rights over human rights. Individual citizen self-sufficiency is anathema to such centralized power structures. "You are but a serf, the Royal Socialist Party knows what to do!"

What to do is wipe out these feral dogs (big domestic breeds gone wild) with semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and trapping. Non-kill traps could be utilized to release endangered species if they are not causing agricultural damage. I've read that dingo dogs are not big on being near people (maybe that's true?).

I have to read-up on sonic defense methods. And not just for dog control. What I've done in the realm of "animal control", I can't recommend to you, due to your not living in a free country.

I'd like blow-out the hearing of would-be burglars; specifically should someone break into my work shed; lot'a tools in there. I have electronic security, but by the time this old man would be out the door, they'd be gone. I'd like for them to leave with permanent hearing loss. Actually it would be happy-fun to have a device so loud their eyes would be bleeding also.

I'm trying, Blitz. I'm only so creative and that's it. Dog packs are just horrible/dangerous pests and the only things that have worked were concerted efforts at eradication -- teams of people and leaving no mean critters behind that could breed.

I'm gonna search for results on sonic devices. Sorry I can't offer more help. We care about you, Blitz. Do endure the concern of all the folk on this site. Everyone is on your side.

I typed a long reply to your message but it appears I've been restrained as I'm only allowed 1000 characters.

I did want to say however, that I'm very grateful for everyone's help, I can tell you. I just wondered if you personally had any knowledge of these sonic devices working and I only mentioned it after myself getting suckered into buying a sonic mouse device that caused the mice to roll around in fits of laughter when I attempted to get rid of the little blighters.

First, you want a dog to be on your side.

Blitz, your dog is on your side, however your critter is both outnumbered AND is up against some big monster thingies. You made this point. Blitz, you would NOT be able to save your dog and if you tried to do so, you could be killed or handicapped / mutilated for life.

In the above video, note how rapidly a dog attacks. This is a captured-on-video of what happened to you. Dogs are unimaginable fast when in a fight. Been there seen that, got attacked, did some bleeding. And when they bite, they start slinging so as to tear meat away or break the victim's neck. Welcome to doggy land in the raw.

I just watched some videos on sonic devices and gee golly gosh, what I saw was pathetic. I saw some dogs driven away, however I didn't see terrified dogs, nor dogs hitting the dirt, nor any other dramatic effect. You need something that is well past dramatic.

    Back to searching ...

I did actually see that video. I wanted to get a Belgian Malinois - absolutely amazing dogs and researched them prior to settling on a German Shepherd. Given my age and the amount of constant training, I thought better of it. I've never seen a dog that can walk a tightrope backwards before! They make amazing protection dogs. Very entertaining video:

    Bear spray effect on "human":

Bear sprays apparently do not always work on bears:

Postal delivery folk use pepper spray against dogs, but these ain't no wild dogs, no BIG wild dogs.

Maybe if one were to use a HUGE can of bear spray, not ordinary pepper spray, no no no. One could toss a distraction bag with meat-smell, then hose the dogs left advancing with Bear Spray, then one may (?) be be able to get back to vehicle.

    https://www.amazon.com/UDAP-Super-Magnum-Spray-Ounces/dp/B001QGTZIU

Me, I'd go pump shotgun with buckshot loads (restrictor plug removed, 6-load tube). Kill those coming and wound those running away, maybe they'll be good doggies and eventually die with lead in their bowels.

She only got off because she knew the magistrate through professional dealings.

I remember a similar instance when I was working as a legal secretary in Sydney years ago. I had a small dagger in my handbag. I had to go to court to file some documents and forgot I had left it in my bag. Just before I went through the scanner, I remembered, so dashed back to the office and put it in my drawer before returning to court. Things could have turned out very, very differently had I not remembered I had it in my bag at the last minute.

Yep, just about everything is illegal in NSW.

    Concentration of pepper spray
    Concentration of political power
Disarming the people for "the greater good"

America is now divided into two separate nations. Plus some states are divided within themselves. For example, Virginia has a handful of counties that are socialist (Democratic Party), but they have swarms of people living there who are anti-self-sufficiency and wish to give up Liberty in exchange for safety from Big Brother. These people without any self-esteem or honor vote. Well in Virginia they voted-in socialist control-freaks who banned semi-automatic firearms. This has resulted in most counties -- something like 95 counties and townships -- having their sheriffs declare the place a sanctuary county or city. Many marched on the Virginia capitol building, armed. Soon, there will be bloodshed in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia is an extreme example, but this is happening in many states. The states with the most crowded urban areas vote socialist -- their people want to live off the paychecks of the people who actually hold the country together. Today's working class people in the USA wish to be adults and thus seek Liberty and autonomy from elitist controllers seeking power via government.

In Italy in the 1400s it was the House of Borgia who took power via the papacy of the Roman Catholic Church. Today, not just in America, but across Western nations, we see the power hungry elite ascending to power via the Church of Secular Humanism. First goal, disarm the peasants. If that doesn't work, move more peasant-people into Western nations to bring-down civilized behavior, create chaos, then propagandize, "Turn in your guns, this will bring you safety!". This is one of the eternal Big Lies.

Therefore, now we see the banning of civilized people from defending themselves against mongrels, both four and two-legged.

Blitz, do there currently exist any enclaves of freedom within Australia?

I must confess that I know so little about your country. It appears to have gone European. We Americans used to think of Australia as being made-up of independent strong people just like American patriots. I sure have thought this. Reports of how Australia has collapsed into base socialism kind'a makes my heart collapse a bit further. Another place of Freedom has perished.

Blitz, if you tell me the names of free areas of Australia, I'll whip-out me a map of Australia, mark these places, and save for reference. I'll name them Australian Islands of Liberty.

Here are maps of NO-GO zones (cancers) in Europe:

Sweden's NO-Go zones, the red flags show just how many urban areas have been lost to the uncivilized.

Blitz, are sling shots (ie. Wrist rockets) legal in your area. A 1/4 inch steely in the ribs or elsewhere sends a dog of any kind, leaving the area. A head shot can kill most dogs.

      https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/133191/Prohibited_Weapons_Schedule.pdf

      Yep. They're illegal.

"A slingshot (being a device consisting of an elasticised band secured to the forks of a “Y” shaped frame), other than a home-made slingshot for use by a child in the course of play. 2(7) A Saunders 'Falcon' Hunting Sling, or any other device in the nature of a hunting sling, catapult or slingshot that is designed for use with, or a component part of which is, a brace that: (a) fits or rests on the forearm or on another part of the body of the user, and (b) supports the wrist against the tension of elastic material used to propel a projectile."

Although, I guess I could carry a kid's slingshot and say it belongs to my future grandson, hahahahahaha! I could always hide it ...

Following up on the some concepts from other members. This is a pump squirt gun, not too heavy and easy to carry. Reported range of 60 feet (20 meters). filled with concentrated ammonia and you should be able to keep the dogs off you. Cut a pipe in half length wise and wrap it around the tube and you have a very nice little club, if the dogs get too close. Cost = $15.45 U.S. Dollars. Note: Old copy machines used to use a very high purity grade ammonia and sometimes will give away their used ammonia.

You are welcome. I have been worried for you and your puppy. I could think of a lot of things but not legal in your country, Feel bad for you. Another question, can you purchase shot gun ammo. If so, I may be able to figure out a cheap walking stick / concealed shotgun. Illegal as heck in your country but would be a big help.

The wife of the cousin of an american I worked with a few years ago was killed by their pet Malamute they raised from a puppy. The fella got home and found his wife dead (dog had taken her throat out) and the dog 'guarding' their young toddler, guy went to pick up the toddler and the dog took a chunk out of his hand. Police arrived and shot the dog. Theory was the dog thought the wife was a threat to the baby. Until that day the dog had been the perfect pet.

Try to find a bear fogger. This thing gotta hose-down what's out front'a you. What I've seen is a range of only 15 feet / 5 meters. I'd have have two or three HUGE foggers on my belt like they were grenades.

Arm leather chaps would also protect your arms from injuries attendant to working in the brush. Some protection from snakebite -- but high-top (to the knee) boots help most with preventing snake-bite. High leather gloves (going up to elbow) would also help around chicken coup to prevent snakebite. You said that you had red-belly blacksnakes out there.

Should dog grab one arm, maybe, just maybe, you could get to bear spray with other arm.

Professionals who use BIG chainsaws also wear leather chaps on their legs. I worked the forestry service a couple of centuries ago. Dim memories of ages past.

I think you need to stick with the chemical defense, using whatever deployment method that works best for you. Unfortunately, your nation has left you basically defenseless, for any distant defense. You are going to have to defend yourself from a much closer distance than I would like. As one member suggested, put your back against a tree. Deploy your squirter and fire away as soon as the get in range. You might consider some type of acid in a little spray (non -leaking or dripping) spray bottle you can hang on your waist belt. I wish you luck on your outdoor adventures.

I've got a recurve bow. They're not illegal but you can't legally use them in a State Forest (without permission, i.e. jumping through hoops and not getting permission in the process). Having said that, I'm going to ring the police registry tomorrow and ask WHAT exactly I can use to defend myself against these wild dogs.

I've spent the day with some locals lobbying for baiting and shooting. The wild dogs are really bad, literally all over the place. The owner next to me has had them come right up to their verandah. Some cattle have been mauled on their legs and a horse rider had some dogs trying to attack them. I found some dog poo which wasn't from pup this morning when I was whipper snippering (I know it wasn't from my boy because his is bigger and I've got him on an extensive training programme and he definitely didn't do any poos in the areas I found it).

      Stay tuned ...

Could try getting them to move on.
I knew someone that had a black bear problem that would get into there yard because they had a crab apple tree in the back that lured it there.
So they cut it down and once the bear realized that the food was gone it left.
They didn't have problems with it again.
Of course this might not work for other people and could make the animal more desperate for food as well and that it was a bear and not wild dogs.
I just know it worked for them.
Most animals are there for a reason like food/water/shelter if those dissapeare they look for a new area.
Just make sure it's not your area. I'm sure if the people I mentioned above left there garbage and there dog's bowl out or had things like chickens or something that the bear would have just got closer.
Not sure if this is of any use just thought it was relatable to the topic.

Thanks Travis but unfortunately it's just not that simple. They are so incredibly prolific in this area after the bushfires. I don't have any food lying around. I burn all meat products that are left over, rather than have anything on the property which may attrack rodents, feral cats (which are also a massive problem) or dogs. The dogs are hunting native species which have come closer after the fires. They apparently travel in "corridors" i.e. places that are relatively clear of bush land. They follow the creek line, which is 500 metres from me and have been seen on numerous properties in the area. I had no idea how bad the problem is. They are attacking goats and calves. Some friends who have a property which breeds meat goats said that the dogs are coming right up to their fence trying to get to their goats. Another local has had kids killed. The dogs don't actually eat them, they just kill them.

My pup wakes me up every night between 1 and 3am barking his head off, desperate to get outside. He goes off his nut. He's sensing something outside, which could well be the wild dogs. Apparently they are about at all hours. Not just dawn or dust, but during the night and during the day as well. Needless to say, I won't let pup out at night, as I don't want him to get into a fight with a pack of wild dogs. Although he's a 40kg German Shepherd, there's no way he would survive a wild dog attack.

The other interesting thing is that all the sightings have been of really big, muscular dogs, with no fear whatsoever. I thought they would be dogs that were scrawny and sickly through lack of food. All of the dogs sighted are really massive. Apparently "pig" type of dogs.

I guess the politicians down there feel like they need to protect the people from themselves. Although, there are some states here that are like that. I can't remember what once now, but in Hawaii you can only have like 2 or 4 oz of mace/pepper spray. Some states you can't own it all. Some states allow you to own a taser or stun gun while others do not. Each state is like its own country. That's why we are called the United States. On the west you can have the deserts of California and Nevada, etc and going East it turns into fields of corn and shit as far as the eye can see. LOL Been there done that. Been to most states and the farthest east I've been was Chicago. Born in a suburb of Chicago.

Yeah, well, we are a convict country afterall. You can't expect too much from the population, especially not being able to think for themselves. They need protecting apparently. Zombies comes to mind actually.

Wow sorry it sounds like I really underestimated how bad it is for you there. the only thing I can really compare it too here is coyotes and rarely wolves.
We also have government population control for some of them especially if they become a threat to people or live stock.
I hope it works out for you.

WOW! The Australian government has seriously screwed it's populace. Let us know what the police say about defending yourself. Has anyone charged /sued the state for damages to there animals or themselves?

FYI - When thinking about feral dogs, consider them like dingo's or wolves except they are very aggressive and have almost zero fear of humans. I had to eliminate a few packs when I worked. They can be dangerous even when armed.

Yep, they've seriously screwed us alright. But hey, it's for our own good, don't you know. Can't be trusted with any type of weapon. My husband used to say you can kill someone with a rolled up newspaper, i.e. just about anything can be made into a weapon if need be. Not that that will help me much in my situation hahahahaha!

To be honest Dale, I'm so over this dog situation. I had no idea it was as bad as it was until I was confronted and started delving. I nearly froze last night having had to split wood which wasn't nearly as good at getting the fire happening. I'm going to just take my chances and start going back in to get wood. I'll leave pup at home though in case he attracted the dogs in the first instance. I can't see the dogs are going to be eradicated any time soon and am not prepared to wait a year to feel safe going out and enjoying the forest.

Blitz, Since your country has gone nuts and there are no legal methods of self defense, go primitive. Make yourself a fire hardened spear and if anyone ask, tell them it's a walking stick. Kill one and the rest will back off and eat him when you leave. Just an idea.

Good idea, thanks Dale. I can't get a water pistol until next week and I'm not waiting until then to go into the forest. I left a huge pile of wood I'd collected at the side of the track when the dogs went on the attack, so I want to go in today and pick them up, as well as collect some more.

I've been trying to ring the police since 8am this morning. Their systems are down (can you believe it?). I'll just keep trying throughout the day. It will be interesting to see what they say. I figure if I put in a complaint to the police, I've got a better chance of something being actioned. Hopefully.

No unfortunately. It's extremely heavily controlled. You have to do a specialist course before you're allowed to put bait down. As with everything else, you have to get permission before using it. The farmers in this area won't allow any baiting at the moment because the fences are down after the fires and some areas aren't repaired yet. This means the stock wanders into the forest and the farmers' dogs go into the forest to round up stray cattle. So they aren't keen on bait being used in case one of their dogs picks up some bait. This is just what I've been told by the person I spoke to on the phone the other day regarding baiting.

I was also talking to a local who baits his property. The bait is pinned into the ground with a metal rod which is L shaped at the top as a type of handle to pull it out again after checking the baits to then put down more. He's got camera footage from last week of a dog lifting up the metal rod out of the ground with his teeth before scarpering off with the bait. Clever dog.

Battery-operated solar-charged video camera, radio-activated claymore mine, proximity alert to remote operator = destroy dastardly dogs.

No doubt illegal. Couldn't stop my imagination.

1080 is also extremely dangerous. When I handled it we had double rubber gloves on under our leather gloves. We used 1080 in depredation collars that fit under the jaw of sheep and goats. 1080 has NO antidote and enough that could get into a scratch or into a mucous membrane, can kill you. It's not something to fool with if you don't have to.

Exactly. Nasty, nasty stuff. I do wish scientists would discover something more humane that has an antidote. I'm deadset against it but unfortunately, that's all there is.

2020-05-30 11.29.45.jpg I found something really, really good. Just have to work out how to attach a pole or something to them.

The dogs will bite the pole. So, drill holes in the poles the diameter of which is just a bit smaller than the nails you will drive through the pole. Use nails that are not too heavy, say 2 1/2 inches in length (6 to 7 cm). Sharpen these nails or use razor blades instead of nails -- maybe double-edge razor blades would be better. If the dogs grab the pole, yank back and rip their mouths / tongues. Watch out so that you don't split the pole while attaching nails or razor blades. Wear leather gloves to protect your hands.

Initially, blood is very slippery. For better hand purchase on spear shaft, wrap it in tennis racket tape or cloth (not rubber) electrical tape (most fold use CLOTH electrical tape on billy-clubs made from heavy pool cues, it's what I did when I was a but a lad; warped 22oz. pool cue?, no problem, I'd take it for "other uses"). Make guards on both sides of the gripping area; if possible this too would help keep the weapon in your hands.

It's a shame that flame-throwers are so dangerous, because you could set these dogs on fire. Hose the wild things with a stream of napalm.

In this hideous world, we are far, far away from God's Mercy, so let us be merciless to our enemies. Isn't that following God's example?! Seems Satan aids the damned. Let's go Old Testament on all that which would do us harm. Oderint dum metuant!

Crikey, that's a bit technical Gold Geezer. The bayonets have fittings on them. I just have to work out how to use them properly. Good idea putting something on the pole to stop it slipping.

Firecrackers? Throw firecrackers at the dogs? Probably no time. Hurricane match attached to fuses -- the gift that keeps on giving.

Be a hooligan. Show no mercy. Take no prisoners. God rained-down fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah -- use His actions as an example of that which what befits evil.
