    Good morning all,

This is somewhat specialized wildlife biology news. Link tells of why Grizzly bears frequent flat paths rather than those with inclines and extra energy needed to climb the.

Article has a hyperlink to university Bear Research Center. The photos are interesting.

    ......

For reasons unbeknownst to me, I am now in the mood for some apple slices and a Nathan Famous hotdog with mustard and sauercraut.

I was a Bear in the Cub Scouts.

Interesting study that confirms some behaviors I have observed. The bears certainly take advantage of the trails I have built and maintained on my private network of trails behind my property. And they are not the only animals that like to take the easier routes.

LOL! I wonder how much that cost us to prove something proven 100 years ago. Conservation of energy in wildlife has been observed forever. Animals run uphill to show predators/pursuers that they are healthy and the predator shouldn't bother. They can't catch them. They run downhill when injured or sick to conserve energy to survive longer. The bigger the animal, the more they try to conserve energy. That's why we have game trails.

Alaskajohn, I would bet you know where the grizzlies constantly put there feet, year after year, on there trails. The spots are bare from use aren't they? All wild canines do the same. That's what makes them predictable and trappable.

The 45-70 has warm loads for lever rifles. Standard loads are for older rifles. Very heavy loads in 45-70 require specialized / super-strong rifle actions.

Error in above photo, the images of the 45-70 and .444 Marlin are flipped. I thought that looked wrong. Went on web and yep, images are flipped. Not a whole lot of difference in case length, but there sure are differences in loading. The .444 Marlin commercial cartridges have a whole lot more power than the 45-70. Be very careful loading the 45-70 hot.
