Interesting article. Am I reading more into this than is there? I just seem to get the feeling that the article is written in a mocking tone. We are all whack-jobs because we want to prepare for natural disasters. Sure, there are some things that are far fetched even to the extreme. A Zombie apocalypse? Seriously? I can't believe people even bring that up with a straight face. For the most part people are prepping for what they will face in every day life. What is wrong with that?

The mocking tone might have been present but it's minor compared to them posting an article on preppers.

The current "Zombie apocalypse" has near zero to do with the traditional West African - Haitian practice anduses the rough definition of something to do with mass medical problems eg epidemics, pandemics, the mass of himanity that walked through contaminated flood waters, ...

US Centers For Disease Control revived the term and the participating public response to it was highly successful. There's even comic books accompanying the CDC program(s).
