He conveniently forgets, or just ignores, the fact that Braxton Bragg was a West Pointe graduate who served with distinction in the Seminole wars, and in the Mexican American War. Most of the Confederate generals were West Pointe graduates who took a side in an extremely complicated issue. Nobody agrees with, or condones slavery, but there was much more to it than one issue. They deserve their place in history.

In truth Bragg was not a good general, every one hated him, including his men, I have read the book company aytch by sam watkins . Sam fought under bragg I could never figure out why they named a fort after him .

The same could probably be said for anyone who has risen to the rank of general. Conversely, you could find people who thought Adolph Hitler or Sadaam Hussein were great guys. Bragg was born in North Carolina, and the family goes back to when it was a walled city. Probably why they named the fort after him.

    Good afternoon Alaska John,

    Just read the Atlantic article.

If concerns about Fort Gordon's namesake and the KKK, might as well close down the Supremes and start out again.

This article appears as appropriately staged with some ghost-writing editors helping with the outline.

The causes of the US Civil War are known. Although a major issue, slavery was not on the top of the list. Machinery was taking over. This was the brilliance of President Lincoln recognizing this.

My view in re General Petraeus' article is that it's the vehicle to do 2 things: get these Confederate names out of the contemporary scenery and to close down these forts. They are no longer needed.

The US lost in Afghanistan. It's now a Chinese sphere of influence. Soon, maybe more than a sphere. They make opium poppies there.

America's largest slave owner was Governor/ President Thomas Jefferson.

We must remind those sopranos to stop singing the Stars Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key was a prominent slave owner.

I have some colleagues who work Capitol Hill and Farragut Square. General Petraeus was not given a high rating for his military and civilian service. It's easy to negatively critique 19th century generals. Yet, during Reconstruction, some worked for the Lincoln administration. One was John Mosby of Powhattan County, Virginia. He was US Consul at Hong Kong, BCC.

The same could be said for Africa. Whenever the United States leaves, the Chinese swoop in to "help".

When Eisenhower was made general of the armies to prosecute a war against the National Socialist (NAZI) Regime in Europe, he overlooked some of his best friends (West Point grads) for command positions and elevated their subordinates over them. Cause some anger? Boatloads.

Eisenhower was fighting a war. He only accepted the best. War is war. Zero compromise.
