Interesting that you should post this. Last weekend here in the UK a two year old child and the mother were shot by a gunman in what appears to be a robbery. No mention of race in the BBC news article. I was shocked thread the news. When I read a bit more it turned out that operation Trident were investigating. Operation Trident was set up to investigate "black on black" crimes, so I conclude this awful crime was "black on black" (as Trident only investigate such crimes). In the UK we have a lot of "Black on Black" drugs related crime, many of those crimes are murders, often of young Black guys, often schoolbag teenagers. In the UK media these crimes barely warrant a mention as they happen very often. I mention this because because it gives context for the UK situation. Not all crimes that affect our Black community are race related they are often just crimes, appalling and sad, but still just crimes.

That's exactly it. The thing is that when these things happen, and are reported in the media, people form an opinion. Sadly, these crimes happen all too often and, as a result, appear in the media far too regularly. Rightly or wrongly that opinion may be formed negatively against Black people. The levels of "Black on Black" crime in the UK are very high indeed. Operation Trident has had very little real success over the years as it has been difficult for the unit to penetrate Black drugs gangs (a lower than national percentage of Black officers have been attracted to joining the Police - possibly due to the historic stance the Police took against persons of colour), whereas it is easier for a predominantly white Police force to insert covert officers into white drugs gangs. Additionally the UK media exacerbated the problem as it has historically almost without exception incorporates the race of the perpetrator into crime reports on most stories. Pleasingly this seems to now be much less common than it was. I am not suggesting that such incidents, and the reporting of them, would make a person become racist, but it would, almost certainly, influence opinion especially for those who are borderline racist (I know, racism is racism, but there is a difference between "silent racism and outspoken racism), or who are simply uncomfortable with repeated and prolific images of violent crime (year on year the amount of stabbings in UK cities grows exponentially). Whilst the majority of UK knife crime appears to be related to Black people it is not, by any means, exclusive to our Black communities. I would suspect that, in fact, it is linked more to the UK population demographic (a larger percentage of UK persons of colour live in cities, rather than rural areas). This may, of course, have to do with poverty or, more likely, a silent form of racism where persons of colour are denied higher paying jobs and hence have less social mobility (this has been a long recorded problem in the UK and is, of course, a wholly unfair treatment of persons of colour and a societal problem that has not been properly addressed in the UK). None the less, there two sides to the stories concerning the BLM and what is happening in the UK and I say that ALL lives should matter equally irrespective of the colour of one's skin, faith and sexuality.
I don't think pulling down some statues to someone long dead is going to solve any kind of racism in the here and now, it may let off a bit of steam and appeal to the masses but it wont make any social inequality go away. the BLM brigade would be better served it they put their efforts towards modern slavery and the "sweat shops" that employ little children who make a lot of our clothing in the 3rd world, places like Bangladesh.
I agree Lonewolf. I think perhaps the "mob" tearing down of statues is symptomatic of societal unease due to Coronavirus more than the BLM campaign. A sensible programme of education and democratic removal of statues would, I am sure, be more beneficial in the long run.
The tearing down of historical statues may be physically done by the mob mentality but the agenda behind it is much more deep and nefarious. It is to erase history and then change it to what they want. ISIS did it too.

To give perspective I thought I would share this article from the UK's Daily Telegraph (online version) paper. It refers to Cornwall in South West England: "The memory of thousands of Cornish people who were kidnapped and sold into slavery has been “culturally erased”, campaigners have said. The issue with George Floyd's death seems to me to be the use of the chokehold. If one puts aside the complaints of Police brutality and institutional racism (and I've no doubt many such complaints regarding this are wholly justified) the chokehold is not a decent action if it has the potential to kill people through its application. Mr Floyd was entitled to be arrested and treated with decency and dignity and, if his arrest warranted it, charged, with the potential to be tried and convicted/cleared on appropriate evidence. He should not have died at the point of arrest, irrespective of his alleged crime or previous conviction record. I understand the upset and anger surrounding is treatment and death. But I don't understand the wave of mob rule that has sprung from the protests.
Good morning Brownbear, Something not discussed in the American "conversation" (new term now getting used) is the true need for more police. Someone arrested requiring restraint can be cuffed and shackled. There must always be the presumption that the detained is unhealthy. I've lived in foreign nations where a police response has MANY more officers than in the US. In a volatile situation at night, a couple of officers is inadequate a number. The Mpls situation was reported as having 3 additional, relatively new, police officers at the scene. My view is that the ideal situation would be 1 to 2 patrol vehicles arriving with a squad commander, drivers, additional LEOs and a couple of police cadets to learn and provide support. Still, much change to protocol is urgently required. Most LEOs would not be able to recognize counterfeit money. Financial crimes are like arson: highly specialized. Of course, the public does not want to pay for improvements.

Hi Pragmatist, It's difficult for us in the UK to compare policing with the US. We have a different style of policing to start with, it is generally low key, and unless there is a specific threat of violence only two officers usually attend. Also we are policed by consent, with a very strong emphasis on "innocent until proven guilty" which tends towards more dignified policing. Of course, there have been grave miscarriages of justice, some police brutality and racism, both in the past and still sometimes today , so our system is far from perfect, but on the whole it seems somewhat less confrontational.
I agree that Mr Floyd was entitled to be treated with decency, using only the degree of force required to detain him for arrest. I don't believe any choke holds should be used after a suspect has been cuffed and is in custody. Having worked as an officer though, I know arrest aren't always a dignified event. I don't know how things work in the UK, but here in the states officers often work alone and without available backup in rural areas. Officers need whatever tactics they have available to make sure they get to go home to there families. I've watched the video of Mr. Floyds detainment and believe the primary officer was angry with Floyd and used force to make himself feel good. All officers understand force and how it affects the human body. I believe the officer intended to hurt or even kill Floyd. You don't need a knee on a suspects throat to keep him on the ground after he is cuffed. Just my opinion. People also need to keep in mind what all transpired before the video began. Don't resist and you will not provide any reason for a knee on your neck. Floyd was entitled to a fair trial but his stupidity, got him killed. Now the the stupid cop will be going to jail. A no win situation. Peaceful protest, go for it. Rioting and occupation tactics and your should face what ever amount of force, including lethal force, is required to end the rioting. When the police are met with hyper-violence, guess what, they buy equipment so as to keep their own alive. Understand that one of the primary goals of all police departments is to attempt to keep blacks from killing each other. Inner city gangs predate on their own. Black gangs rob and burgle black senior citizens and other black people who are not armed. Black gangs fight over turf, so on any given weekend across America, dozens of black gang members (and innocent bystanders) are killed by other gang members. Blacks have a FAR LOWER gun-ownership rate than whites, therefore in black neighborhoods, the gangs enjoy the ready-availability of victims. Irrespective of any draconian gun laws, these gangs will always be armed. All guns in America could be banned and confiscated, but within a month or two, the gangs would be armed again by buying war weapons looted from government armories in Central America (obtained via pay-offs to government officials, "Look the other way" money). The Mexican drug gangs are now using full-auto rifles and RPGs -- these are coming out of Central America. Now, it is you trying to bring order to the chaos in these inner-city purgatories! How would you deal with it? Kneel down and capitulate? That's when you get shot in the back of the head. You get a call from an ambulance trying to get a heart attack victim to the hospital but they are taking on gunfire. You and yours must go in there and extract the emergency response crew in the middle of that mayhem, plus you mustn't hurt anyone lest you set off a riot. Have fun! .
