I have seen people talking about roasting them and different ways to prepare them. But in a pinch could you eat them raw?

You can repetitively soak and or boil them and reduce the tannin content by leaching it out then roast them and make a flour. Without that they are extremely bitter. White oaks are less bitter and there are some varieties that are so mild that they can be eaten raw. Native Americans used to have wars over possession of groves of such trees.
