One thing about asparagus is that once you get it started and healthy, it will be coming back and it will be spreading. Let some of it grow to seed if you want it to spread.

I have been very remiss in not planting asparagus.

    And it is exceedingly nutritious:

The advent of Agriculture in ancient times led to the stability of the population, hunter gatherer communities size were regulated by how much food they could find, but agriculture was only confined by how much they could grow, a bad harvest and the population would fall, a good harvest and the population would increase.

Actually where I live food would be the least of the things to worry about if things just went totally sideways. PEOPLE are always going to be the thing to worry about. Humanity has wiped out all of the great predators as far as them being any threat now. Heck, most are protected now from the only real killer left.

The veil of civilization is tissue paper thin on most people. Take away the threat of repercussions and imprisonment and in a year the population of the US would be less than half of what it is now. When things break down the creatures of the night come out. The riots and looting will be the beginning of the end for a certain class of people.

Criminals are nothing to worry about in the event of the apocalypse. When you are free to just kill on sight anyone that you catch stealing from you thieves will thin out FAST. People with bad manners won't last long either.

Unfortunately our American "civilization" has become rotten at its roots because the worst of us are allowed to breed like rats and commit their crimes over and over. At one time in Texas a murderer sentenced to life COULD hit the streets in as little as 7 years! Life is considered 33 years. You can get parole when you have served half BUT if you are good they will give you "good" time that means that your years are counted as double time. The could put you up for parole the first time in a little over 7 years!!

A jury of their pears sentenced them to LIFE. I've sat on one of those juries. You give someone life because in the minds if the entire jury if that person is ever free that he will be a threat. You don't do it to punish the criminal, you do it to protect the honest people that that person will harm if ever given the chance...and then the blood sucking liberal judges and politicians free them as soon as possible. The ONLY way to make sure that they will never hit the streets again is a death penalty. Even with that with all of the appeals and crap they are about as likely to die of old age in prison as they are to be executed.

I personally don't like the death penalty. I don't trust the cops or the Judicial systems enough to give them that power BUT if you are on a jury and don't want that monster coming hunting you in a few years that is the only thing that will do the job. Most criminals either catch the hint the first time they land in prison and when they get out they never come back. The rest seem to look at prison as sort of their home away from home and keep the revolving doors spinning.

They don't land in prison the first time they do something unless it is a capital offense, like murder, kidnapping or robbing a bank. The rest are like a head cold that just won't go away and spend their entire lives in and out making hard working people support them either in prison or by stealing from you.

When a jury gives them life that should mean that they will only leave the prison system feet first in a coffin. The crime rates would PLUMMET. The sad thing is that these people, in Texas, don't get life until they have three major felonies or kill someone in a really bad way. The three crimes and its life mean they have to get caught and prosecuted three separate times. What happens is once the are out on parole, if they commit a crime, as long as nobody is killed or BADLY injured, they just send them back to prison and don't waste the money to try them again. So much for the three strikes and you are GONE. They have to PROSECUTE you three times for it to be a life sentence....and out you may come in 7 years.

Most of them get out and stay out just long enough to spawn a kid or two and rob a few dozen people before they get caught and sent back. If nothing else as part of all convictions of a violent crime they should be given a free vasectomy. If one of those violent crimes is a rape or cold blooded murder they should be just neutered.

Danm, when I don't sleep for a couple of days I get CRANKY!!!
