I have unverified information that without food being delivered to the Chinese cites and food stores shut down , paychecks stopped with no work going on , banks closed - people are starving . Is this a prelude to what is coming to other countries ?

And to think people in countries with more freedom want communism for themselves . This is pure fake news derangement on a massive scale " Propaganda at work " . Communist view free thinkers as the enemy of the state .

    Good morning Old Geezer,

    I think you're on to something - - - just joking - - - you've explained the actual, real situation.

Saudi Arabia convened an emergency OPEC meeting because of the reduced levels of petroleum used by China during this disease outbreak. This is one of the best indicators that the numbers you've got above are the correct ones.

I do understand that the bigger danger to China is the secondary hazard: large-scale panics and refugee-style migrations out of the quarantine zones.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

We've - - - ie the thinking population segments of the world - - - got some stuff to work with now.

Cruise ships are breeders of disease. They are a major problem.

Crowded buses and rail cars: just like cruise ships.

Public schools that are overloaded with kids - some not vaccinated nor taught basic hygiene: just like cruise ships.

High rise apartment building converted into slums: just like cruise ships.

The wild animal markets: already known.

Cruise ships and the other germ repositories are only the manifestation of the problem. We here in the States have massive bureaucracies loaded with bloated payrolls and fat budgets and minimal mass medical care programs for the states to have in the field.

It's less about disease and more so about socialism.

Daniel Boone got himself vaccinated against smallpox via the cowpox route - and this was ages ago !

    Good morning all,

Consider adding to list: cinemas, karaoke rooms, education centers and club houses....as per above link.

Some of us old timers here would have to develop new techniques if cinemas require a vacant seat between each movie-goer. Maybe that's to generate after movie spree at karoke rooms ... ("I really like you a lot; how 'about.....")

Meanwhile as bad as this pandemic is, as soon as I leave here in a few minutes, I'll be immersed in the most dangerous event Americans usually participate in: operating a vehicle on a public road.

Confirmed cases have jumped to 60 239 with 1366 dead.

They have explained the dramatic increase as due to "broader methods of diagnosis"

Also possible now that the WHO finally has the start of a team on the ground in China, lying about everything is going to get more difficult.

    Good morning Rebecca,

There's much more to all of this than hospital care for the ill and getting the food supplies replenished.

The Chinese aspect of this pandemic has 3 prongs:

    1. Wuhan city has about 11 million population. Add Wuhan to the province and it just under 60 million population -about the combined population of California and all of New York state. Even in routine times, 60 million is a "challenge".

    2. China must prevent mass panics. Panics cause evacuations. This means the deadly infection spreads. A boat load eventually getting to India...India isn't the healthiest of areas. ... and so forth.

    3. Non-Chinese businesses are also losing money. Both UAL and Delta Airlines are not flying to China. Many trade shows in Europe (trade shows are multi million $ events) cancelled. Business travel to/from China cancelled (some minor exceptions).

If this isn't managed properly - and delicately - ... remember only a few days ago, China launched aircraft around Taiwan because they got approved by the UN to participate, by phone, in the WHO emergency conference ..... Flareups have occurred over even smaller matters than Taiwan getting their request approved.

They using CT scan result to diagnose patient now (not sure how that work though)

And what the F does WHO will do any good than what is currently being done already?! Trusting anything from WHO is synonym of trusting anything that came from english language news medias. Here is some "behind the door" fact you need to understand. WHO has already lose much credibility across Asia. Although most Asian political leadership will still cite WHO for something, behind close door that no longer the case.

Big Socialist countries have always had issues with feeding their people. The sad fact is that socialism on a large scale isn't very efficient. There is not much incentive for the average person to try to excel. The small inefficiencies when multiplied by over a billion people adds up to huge waste of, time, efforts and resources. Capitalism has a similar problem but it just takes longer to happen.

What is happening in China is what happens when you live on the razors edge in almost every critical point. They raise JUST enough food, have JUST enough doctors and hospitals they have JUST enough housing to keep most of the people out of the elements by piling them up in small areas because they also have a very minimalistic infrastructure. It works and all looks fine, if a little bit underwhelming to westerners, UNTIL something bad happens and then this minimalistic method starts to come apart.

The same will eventually happen in the West but it is a slower process with capitalism. With Capitalism it is like the game Monopoly. In the start, everyone has money and is busy buy and building bot over time one person will absorb the holdings of all others and the endgame has one with all and the rest with nothing. Over time, in the US the rich have gone from being a millionaire to billionaires and now to trillionaires. Slowly all the wealth is moving into the hands of a smaller and smaller percentage of the population. The end game as they move their factories to other countries where labor is cheap while at the same time raising the prices on the products that they sell we will slowly slide into a very similar minimalistic culture to what the socialist started out with and then we can fall just as suddenly.

At this time the US has a pretty robust economy and the healthcare system. Much of Europe and the UK has slipped off into socialism in pieces and their situation while better than the Chinese is also threatened. The aim of socialized medicine is for EVERYONE to have just enough health care. Without a profit motive that is about all you get. In order to get more, you have to pay more taxes and nobody wants that soooooo.

Tough times always show the problem with socialism. When things go right all, smart/dumb, strong/weak, industrious/lazy, good/criminal, have just enough but when things fall apart ALL starve. In a capitalistic system when hard times hit the poor, the stupid, lazy, and weak starve but the rest survive. (I mean this mostly in an economic sense by the way.

When you have too many underfed people crowded into a tiny space this is going to be a breeding ground for suffering. China doesn’t allow its media to report the bad while ours blows a lot of it out of proportion. We each are at the far end of the swing stroke and while at opposite ends, are also a little similar in our situation. Their poorest are numerous but ignored and their plight is unreported and any unrest is stomped out fast. In the US for example on the other end of the swing, the poor are a small percentage and they are well fed, housed, clothed, entertained and provided for but their plight is blown into a life or death struggle by the media. Their misery is covered by the media in painful detail even when most of it is self-imposed. They are convinced that they are oppressed, and unrest is almost encouraged. The end result is a powder keg waiting for a spark.

Here if one person were to starve to death it would be national news. In the socialist nations, millions die and the word starvation is forbidden in reporting and the deaths go unreported. At some point, the Chinese people are going to reach a nothing left to lose level of misery and the blood bath will start.

I do not believe China does delicate in anyway for anything. Massive crack downs, disappearances and threats yes. Delicate no.

The WHO is perhaps doing delicate, although it looks more like @@@ kissing the Chinese government. Excuse the rudeness.

Which brings me to Varuna lol...

I never said I trusted WHO, I don't trust any organization especially one so political. What I meant to imply was that the more foreigners they allow in the more risk they face of someone speaking out. There is always the possibility of that one person who's morals transcend how much they love their job. And if they speak up internationally with evidence it makes things more complicated for China.

Speaking of handling things delicately I read that in North Korea people are quarantined for 30 days. Their solution for anyone that is caught out in public before that 30 days up is SHOT. Talk about effective!!! As poorly fed as those people are if it gets started there it is going to wipe them out. I suspect that their government will do very little to help them. It let them stare when it had a famine a few years ago. They believe that a lot more than a million died. The Government's response?...They forbade the words hunger and starvation from being used in any news reports. If you didn't fully comply you disappeared. I expect any epidemic to be handled the same. You have to know, they LET their people starve to death while exporting most of their food to China for money to build their war machine and allow the elite to live in STYLE. The little fat man makes Adolf Hitler look like a great humanitarian.

    Good afternoon Rebecca,

So far, TLC - Tender Loving Care / delicate actions are going on.

A big indicator of this is the Chinese jets that went to Taiwan airspace. It could have been a spark next to a powder keg. It wasn't.

The US, Canada and a few other nations arranged for evacuation flight by chartered aircraft. A couple of decades ago, this would not have happened.

Hong Kong (and Russia) have some "under the horizon" border crossing points for medical officials. This is delicate.

So far Hong Kong is still present.

I am concerned far more about what covert actions the United States Government is implementing currently in America, reference 2019 coronavirus actions.

Unrelated to the above point is:

That no one is chirping about is that 90% of medications sold and dispensed in U.S.A. come from China.

    Good afternoon Sourdough,

Don't know of any covert actions.

Re the unrelated point; Only indirectly, ... I posted some article today mentioning that India and China are holding off on PPE stuff like face masks and bio suits to the US so they can replenish their supplies. Would guess after replenishment, both countries will prep massive stockpiles to the detriment of the US. At some point the US has to return to making our needed PPE.

Well..........If we knew about any they would not be covert.

Bottomline is I don't trust my government to look out for my wellbeing. I do trust that my government will lookout for it's own wellbeing. If they can figure anyway to steal more of our freedoms while using this 2019 Coronavirus as an excuse......they will.

    Good morning Sourdough,

Using the same facts / fact pattern(s), it can also be said that USG protections of its citizenry is the same now as in other eras. Think of the WWII gasoline rationing and the food rations card. Some had allotments larger than others.

Actually, some private citizens know of covert operations just by being present. If, for example, someone's healthy adult son gets a Yellow Fever immunization and then the anthrax series, the dad can clearly guess and fill in the blanks. Much later, there will be a vague article in the Washington Post.

It wasn't knowing of a covert action but somewhat recently, learned that something was prepared and "ready to roll". Was setting up an emergency shelter and made an email inquiry to ask the dims of an aluminum pallet loaded with a specific pharma and med equipment so I could have large enough door unblocked and ready for delivery. Reply email was not to get involved.

Definitely agree that the corona virus is the vehicle for many new "innovations" and other aspects entering the national scene.

Someone wrote a short comment to one of the numerous web articles on the pandemic: " ... strategy sounds like that cruise ship is being treated like a lab experiment".

Now's a great time to start making electronic and other shit in this country for a change. I foresee a boom of industry in the U.S. once again.

Maybe China will learn from this and create a better USDA-like department. Who the hell would eat a bat or salamander anyway? Oh, CHINA!

I'm more than a little bit glad that our single-sourcing, as in country single-sourcing, is being crushingly pointed-out. Hellish event in-and-of itself in terms of human suffering. Effect of viral outbreak also damages economic infrastructure of world economy.

Within the military decades ago, Air Force senior supply officers pointed out that our aircraft required integrated circuits provided by Japan, Japan alone.

In the 1980s, I was working for an international electronics giant here in America. We had gone to just-in-time manufacturing and our warehouse, once freaking huge, went tiny. Guess what happened about three years later -- fire took-out a Philippine mega-warehouse. An enormous chunk of THE supply of CMOS memory ICs for planet Earth went up in smoke. We got kicked in the crotch. I wasn't working the manufacturing side (was working design quality control in our engineering building), however what that caused was site-wide grief no matter where you worked. They may have furloughed some manufacturing folk, but I don't specifically remember that. Short story, our dependency worked out unbelievably BAD for us and all other electronics manufacturers ... ON EARTH.

Long quote below, however this is super important:

    https://www.breitbart.com/asia/2020...chinas-monopoly-on-u-s-drug-medical-supplies/

"In testimony yesterday before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Scott Gottlieb, a physician and the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner in the Trump administration, explained in detail the extent of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry’s dependence on China:

"About 40 percent of generic drugs sold in the U.S. have only a single manufacturer. A significant supply chain disruption could cause shortages for some of many of these products.

"Last year, manufacturing of intermediate or finished goods in China, as well as pharmaceutical source material, accounted for 95 percent of U.S. imports of ibuprofen, 91 percent of U.S. imports of hydrocortisone, 70 percent of U.S. imports of acetaminophen, 40 to 45 percent of U.S. imports of penicillin, and 40 percent of U.S. imports of heparin, according to the Commerce Department. In total, 80 percent of the U.S. supply of antibiotics are made in China.

"While much of the fill finishing work (the actual formulation of finished drug capsules and tablets) is done outside China (and often in India) the starting and intermediate chemicals are often sourced in China. Moreover, the U.S. generic drug industry can no longer produce certain critical medicines such as penicillin and doxycycline without these chemical components.

"According to a report from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, China’s chemical industry, which accounts for 40 percent of global chemical industry revenue, provides a large number of ingredients for drug products. It’s these source materials — where in many cases China is the exclusive source of the chemical ingredients used for the manufacture of a drug product — that create choke points in the global supply chain for critical medicines.

"Moreover, when it comes to starting material for the manufacture of pharmaceutical ingredients, a lot of this production is centered in China’s Hubei Provence, the epicenter of coronavirus. Most drug makers have a one to three-months of inventory of drug ingredients on hand. But these supplies are already being drawn down. Among big [active pharmaceutical ingredient] makers in Wuhan are Wuhan Shiji Pharmaceutical, Chemwerth, Hubei Biocause, Wuhan Calmland Pharmaceuticals. [emphasis added]

"Gottlieb notes that “80 percent of the U.S. supply of antibiotics are made in China.”

Sidebar; I like that map. No air traffic in Dien Bien Phu - west of Hi pong on water - . "The more things change, the more they stay the same".

    Good morning Old Geezer,

Of course the basic and ultimate question is why did US manufacturing - pharma, aircraft, oil acquisition, military R&D, go overseas.

The FDA's Dr Gottlieb is working against the Import-Export Bank and their sponsor, Boeing. The USA has modern versions of fiefdoms with their own warlords, knights (attorneys, lobbyists, financiers...) and Sanhedrans. We are divided.

    ...... other post;

Of course the Wuhan corona virus itself is being downplayed to the public. North Korea has no reported cases even though they are in full pandemic alert mode. Just reading info what's available to the public shows this......and to think South America has no cases !

I provide this link not for it's titled issue -- spread of this virus in Africa -- but to point-out that some genetic lines are particularly susceptible.

Opening the article, drop down (way down) to the table "Populations at Risk". You'll see ACE2 mentioned. Don't go trying to learn about ACE2 unless of course you need to know a bunch of extraordinarily tedious human physiologic mechanisms. ACE2 matters in that there are genetic predispositions to catching this virus. One thing that they are NOT saying in this article is that it looks to me like it's not just predisposition but also how bad the virus' impact -- particularly on the respiratory system. The crap that I told you not to bother with, I happen to know some of these mechanisms. Think fluid balances. Think fluid in the lungs. Is having fluid in your lungs a good thing? No! Hell no.

Note that some people who reinfect die of pneumonia. The meds the Chinese are using to treat this virus can have negative impacts on the lungs -- which wouldn't be so bad if your patient had a recuperation period. Maybe the lungs could recover from all the damage. However, what if the lungs get reinfected while in a weakened state. What if these things concerning the lungs were also true of the heart. Wanna re-infect a person who has a compromised heart? Wanna drop the blood pressure suddenly on a compromised heart? What if the blood pressure went too high and the heart couldn't fill itself with blood to then push that blood out into the vascular system (your heart fills then fires). Are these things good? No, not good. Bad.

People of European descent may have a bit of protection against this virus (?). And, they might not have the death rate that other races my have. The latter sentence is just Old Geezer extrapolating some physiologic processes into the realm of the pathophysiologic. I could be royally full of s### on the latter matter. But in predisposition, Asians appear to be more at risk.

Again, Asians appear to be more at risk.

Call me conspiratorial, but to me that sounds like a manufactured virus, a militarized virus. It is a virus a Western nation would design to "try-out" on Asians to study its impact without having the hellish mortality rates of other viruses, which simply kill you. And oh, it isn't as much of a killer on white folk, hmmmmmm. It is also a virus that the Communist Chinese would develop and KEEP IN A SUPER-PROTECTED LAB to study because they know that they are genetically narrow, genetically non-diverse, and thus a potential target for genetically-targeted pathogens.

Here's a "feature". If this virus does enough damage in China, many industries would, out of necessity, have to be moved back to Western nations. We do not have the slave labor hordes as does China, however we sure do have the capability to automate the dickens out of our future factories. Why we haven't already done that is another huge topic unto itself.

There are going to be beneficiaries of the damage this virus does ... IF it can be contained. If it cannot be contained, everybody is going to feel the pain, societal and economic.

The more I read and learn about this virus, the more I feel like I'm living in a movie based on a SciFi novel written by a nut-case.

    Good afternoon Old Geezer,

If it is a "try out" and the elder statesmen of the Middle Kingdom accept it as such, could this generate a non-proportional quid pro quo ?

Circa November, 2019, Dr He Jiankui got world famous for his genetically edited babies. Relates to CRISPR/Cas 9 which I have no idea what this stuff is about. I have heard that this CRISPR research can weaponize mosquitoes.

Dr He got his PhD at Rice Univ. After his edited babies announcements, he caught static from the international bio community about not following ethical guidelines for this research. The government of China agreed with the international bio community and Dr He was sentenced to 3 years jail time and some other negative things.

I'm guessing that by now Dr He has a cook in his villa, a couple of housekeepers and a driver with car.

    ...

Interesting chart. Those Southern Han China (92%) are the Hakka. These are the folks running Canton Province which includes Shenzhen, nearly next to Hong Kong. Dr He is from Shenzhen.

    ...

Meanwhile, instead of Lobster Cantonese, will stay with the Occidental food for a little while longer.

I'm suprised that this wa even allowed to be published. The last thing that I saw that addressed similar matters was branded a racest and eventually arrested on some sort of incitment charges. I had to write to him personally to even get my hands on a copy of his paper. There was no judgment in his paper. It was just a mater of numbers that documented physical diferences in the various human racial types.

Many if not most of the problems that we have in the racial area has to do with this and us demanding that the idea that all people are created equal has to mean that we are all the same. In doing that it makes a lot of people very uncomfortable. It is a little like if they forced the clothes makers to only make ONE SIZE of pants and then insist that everyone wear that one size of pants.

Any serious suported study in this sort of thing is frought with the possibility of being accused of raceism and so most places discourage research into this area. Modern medicine is insistant that we are all the same so no research is allowed except in areas where only one race catches or has a disease like sickle cell anemia. Eventually thisis going to bite us in the butt.

China facing financial Armageddon . In desperation China lifted the quarantine but people are refusing to go back to work .85% of small businesses employ 80% of China's population . These small businesses expected to run out of cash within 3 months . China's economy collapsing . Less than one third showed up at some businesses . China's 40 trillion financial system expected to disintegrate , as it is suddenly flooded with trillions in bad loans . ---Source Zero hedge . Much more on this at Zero Hedge .---- Is this the first domino / country teetering to fall ?

I predict that this coronavirus will circle the globe and every one will eventually get it. approximately 4% of the world will die. those with underlying health issues will die . This is not a bad thing. Diseases like this weed out the weak, old, those without a fully functioning immune system . the world is overpopulated and needs to filter out those that are not perfectly
healthy. so this is not a bad thing , it keeps us strong.

Arctic Bill, as one of the not "perfectly Healthy" I would certainly consider it a bad thing. All in your perspective. Now if it only kills off Liberals and Democrats, then it would be a good thing.

LOL, it isn't even infecting that high of a percentage in that one city where it originated. You also have to realize that a 2% mortality rate over there is not reflective of what it would be in a place that already has a substantial health system ready. The places that it will hit hardest will be the places with socialized medicine. Like in China the minimalist medical system of socialist nations will not be able to handle the numbers. If we elect Bernie that will be us in a few years.

I just hope that if it gets here that people will deal with it realistically and not allow the media to herd them into stupidity. It is a freaking flu not the plague.

They got to study the virus without China putting their foot on the scales . An adult Texdanm 's age has a 33 % chance of dying if they catch the virus . You can look up your chances on a chart on zero hedge . Presently the chart is on the third page .--- I am even older than Tex but luckily for me the chart went downward for my age bracket 70 and gave me only a 22 % chance of dying .

That movie, while fairly good, was a couple hours longer than it needed to be.

    "M-O-O-N, that spells moon. LOL

I'm not a huge Steven King fan, but the remake of Salem's Lot was pretty decent. I bought the DVD for Halloween.

    Good morning Poltirgist,

Good news that the equilibrium - the balance to China's economy - will be maintained. They do have excess labor capacity and labor capability.

The bad news is that this equilibrium also directly - DIRECTLY - involves the US economy and China's economic adjustments will affect the US 30 days later. The EU: about 20 days later. The other off the path places: think of Saudi's "empty quarter".

The Wuhan corona virus is a health problem but less so than smoking, poor personal hygiene, and consuming wild animals not properly acquired, processed, ... to the consumer. "Properly" includes public health oversight. Rest assured rabid animals, just like tuberculin cows' filets will be sold in the unregulated wild food markets.

Trump's not in India today because he likes mint cigarettes.

    Good morning Poltiregist,

I'd make the distinction between "financial" and "economic" troubles. The US Government can handle the dollar adjustments although still felt by the Middle Class. The "economic" problems are the worry and POTUS is in India working on new supply chain arrangements both "just in case" and also "strategic" considerations. So much US pharma ingredients, both for shelf stuff and RX come from China - and look how many flights and ships are reduced to minor levels ! Besides, pharma, a walk through Walmart, Target and the rest shows the supply chains.

The medical teams are like the professors. They have high-paying jobs from a single source (although some indirectly) and know about the source of rice bowl replenishment.

REAL Preppers/survivalists take all scares seriously by evaluating all of them. It's still about common-denominators. A Prepper must maintain decent diet, hydration, hygiene ...... even prior to the saturated news about Wuhan and the quarantines ...... Stocking up on the basics: repair material/tools for dwelling, food, water, health items, safety items (eg flashlight, cattle prod, large pole, ..)

A REAL Prepper/ survivalist keeps informed, listens to views of other Preppers, attends area governmental meetings (as much as they're trashy, the bad policies get implemented by default: no one says something at the meeting that a reporter will hear or a "neighbor".

I do have some hope - and I'm no optimist. It's a push-shove matter. When they have gastro-intestinal pains, thirsty

, hungry and injured, Preppers will be asked "How can I ..."

Like that song: "It happens every time..."

Most will not make it; I'm only talking about a few.

    Good morning Lonewolf,

The Wuhan corona virus infections could also be A,B, C, D, E, ...

If this WHO scientist is sincere, look for his, her, its reports explaining the need to close down the world's wild life markets, the cruise ship industry, parents not getting their kids immunized against measles, mumps, flu,...

Even if 80 million perish, there's enough of a population to continue the species.

Like Pragmatist it isn't as important as what a person thinks will probably happen as it is to look at the worst possibility and prepare for the worst . Denying or hoping and not preparing " is not the way I operate " . I certainly don't know if what Zero Hedge prints is correct but it gives at least possible up coming or current events that I can focus my prepping efforts on . I actually like to obtain the worst predictions possible .
