The .223/5.56 is intentionally designed to create wounded people and NOT dead people. Wars are not won so much by killing a bunch of people as creating so many injured people that the ability of that government to take care of them is over whelmed. A dead man makes his brothers at arms angry at the people that they are fighting. watching your brothers suffer from injuries that they leadership can no longer deal with on the otherhand makes the soldiers lose intrest in fighting for people that then will just let them die.

The 5.56 replaced the 7.62 for this reason. The FMJ 5.56 is by far the least lethal weapon that any American soldier has EVER carried into battle. It may work in some places but in the Middleeast it is a mistake. They don't care about injuries or casualties. If you want to make an impression on them you need to kill a BUNCH of them without mercy.

In declaredd wars between nations the Geneva Convention forbids truely deadly rounds. That means ONLY Full metal jacketed bullets FMJ. that means no real expansion and minimises the severity of wounds. You wou.d never want to hunt deer with FMJ rounds because it woud be needlessly cruel. Few kills but lots of injuries that would lead to slow deaths. It is actually against the law ro hunt with FMJ bullets in some places for that reason.

We are NOT members of that agreement. If you are defending your familly you want an attacker DOWN and DEAD. I got into reloading in part to do away with those type of rounds. As a matter of survival you want DEAD adversaries not injured and angry ones that can come back on you later. My reloads are MANY times better stoppers and much more deadly than the danm FMJ ball ammo. They are also cheaper than comparable ammo.

The compliance rate in current state "assault rifle" bans is around 5% -- i.e. 95% of owners disobey the law. A national ban would see lower rates of compliance because only liberal states have banned them so far.

But I see a ban coming. It will happen. It will drive the wedge between the two separate Americas even deeper. This "administration" should be called the "final straw" administration.

This admin wants a "limited" nuclear war to give them reason to declare martial law and stop the 2022 elections from occurring (a "limited" nuclear war, what a black joke!). This is why we are sending state of the art weapons to Ukraine -- to push senior Russian generals into a corner. This administration is shutting down fuel supplies. It is allowing food shortages. This administration will ban classes of firearms. It is promoting inflation / printing "money" hand-over-fist. On and on ...

If the USSA goes civil war, the assault rifles may be of limited use in the hands of ex-military and soldiers refusing to follow orders to crush citizen opposition to invalid government. However, there are better weapons (& better tactics) than this particular category of weaponry for citizens to shut down D.C. (and other major cities).

Our government left a huge stockpile of arms in Vietnam when we departed...and it fell into the hands of the North Vietnamese Army . Much of these arms found their way into Central America in the Brush wars in which we were involved in the 1980s. The run of the serial numbers confirmed this connection.

Our government also left in haste Afghanistan.....a huge stockpile of Arms and materials ...in like manner to Vietnam....sufficient to field an Army amongst people who do not like us.

Are we as Americans even supposed to be able to think this far on our own without specific authorization and or paperwork...???

New Zealand has pretty much banned all rifles except for hunting rifles and did a buy back scheme which has worked well. 'They' would not get away with that in the USA so easily but things have to change so do you do it slowly bit by bit and upset people for many years or do it in one swoop and deal with the big problems changes would bring in a shorter time frame?

Something has to change and it will be interesting to look at stats from Canada five years down the line

Did I tell you I own a pistol with a 14 inch barrel....Have 5 different barrels for it in different calibrations.

In my home state, there are no state income taxes. I've had land with a house (2100 square foot) and only pay $800/year in property taxes. Fed income taxes 17%. Cops in home town sell-off firearms confiscated from scummy felons to the local good citizens. People up in the hills wave at each other, deputies wave, the bad seed are known, everybody has everybody else's 6-o'clock. I was just driving through the mountains today -- scenic route. Hundreds of thousands of square miles of solid forest ... beautiful mountain streams ... too beautiful to describe.

No mass shootings. Pull a gun in anger and three or four people might just drop you where you stand. If someone acts crazy, the sheriff will know about it in short order.

My son's medical bills after a near-fatal car accident were eaten by the hospital. If one has medical bills, one sets up a payment plan, "I can pay you $100 a month." People on social security can get Blue-Cross Blue Shield health insurance. One's credit rating cannot be harmed due to medical bills -- that is not only immoral, it is against the law. My wife and I have medical bills, nevertheless our credit rating is over 800 (850 is the highest rating with this one particular company).

While living at home, I followed the rules set down by my parents. Whoever protects you, owns you.

Sometimes with gangs in the USSA, they require a youngster to commit an armed robbery or a hit so that the youth will be accepted into a gang. "No sissies," as it were. Also, this weeds-out anyone who might be a police infiltrator.

Shooting in Philadelphia last night around midnight. Likely gang related, however.

The USA used to be awash in all manner of guns (including semi-autos, such as the super-popular army surplus .30 carbine), yet no mass shootings. Then the mainstream media made it their cause célèbre and poof!, copy-cat mass shootings pop up all over the place. It's now easy for crazies to get mass news coverage.

Assault rifles are going to be banned here in the former USA. The media will win.

We'll see if we get mass killings via stolen heavy trucks such as happened in Nice, France.

In November last year, a guy drove into a parade with his SUV and crushed a half-dozen people to death. The official/cleaned-up story was that he was running from police. Initially, he had been running from the police, however he had successfully evaded the police but was still in his SUV. He saw the parade, drove back around to that street, then aimed at the parade and went in at speed. Only saw-horse barriers were up, nothing real. The felon (was out on $1000 bond for running over his girlfriend with the same SUV, plus he was a registered sex offender) was of color and the parade was composed of mainly white folk, so the media was in a panic to sanitize this event.

Are so many of us asleep at the wheel out here so that we do not recognize that the Federal Government is one of the biggest gun running groups out here..often arming not only friends but our enemies as well???

And we as Americans cannot be trusted with our guns and or ammuniton.



Now that I think about it further.....Last weekend I stopped by my favorite reloading supply store up in Glouster county and found that they had very very little gunpowder nor primers.

This has been going on for about a year and a half that these supplies are in great shortage.
I do not believe that these raw materials used in the manufacture of these supplies just disappeared...but are being re routed to somewhere and someone else.

Someone or someone out here is manufacturing huge stockpiles of ammunition ...just not for the civilian marketplace.

I have been thinking the same pattern on such military/government applications such as batteries, tires...et a...based on increased prices..as reflected in inflation.

Is food now one of these as well???? Judging by shelves going empty.????
I am asking myself if we as Americans are going to need our guns/weapons to protect ourselves and our families from other Americans demanding access to our prepped food and other stores because they have been playing in sports, television and movies while some of us have been making preps. You know....that involuntary servitude business...wherein you have to work twice or more to not only keep your family alive but also all the entitled people who played rather than prepped.
And furthermore, will it get so bad that Government will seize your supplies/preps and jail you for prepping...domestic terrorist.??

The thing that is sad is the misunderstanding about the intent of the 5.56 round in a military weapon. For military use in a war it is great. LOTS and LOTS of living casualties. The thing that people mistake it for is a great weapon to defend your home. It is a full jacketed 22. In close ranges I'm not sure that it stops as well as a 22 LR in an auto. If you could get the bad guys to line up it might be good but one on one you had better do head or heart shots ONLY. It doesn't have much if any more stopping power up close than a 22LR. Unless it hit a bone it will just pass right through soft tissues.

 

The 5.56 x 45 and its civilian cousin, the .223 Rem, are excellent varmint rounds -- they'll even do critters over 80 lbs (36kg, 6 stone). The 5.56 FMJ is a wounding round / disabling round, just as TexDan sez. Sure, a lot of soldiers have been killed by it, however you can't count on that. Some of the early rounds tumbled and there was a huge lot of West German ammo that would yaw and break apart at the cannelure -- these puppies killed if a soldier was shot straight-on.

Funny thing about humans, they don't like getting shot. In fact, when their position starts taking rounds, humans get behind things. They get behind walls, trees, you name it. You can bust through a cinder block / concrete block if you keep shooting it with 5.56 FMJ rounds. A 7.62 NATO (7.62 x 51) or a 7.62 Nagant (7.62 x 54r) will simply bust a block. These .30 cal. rounds will shoot through walls, floors, ceilings, over 14" of tree trunk, ... . In FMJ, the .30 cal. kids often wound and not kill, yet hit a humorus and that arm comes off.

Even with expanding rounds, the 5.56 is inadequate for deer hunting -- indeed, it is illegal to shoot deer . You put an expanding round in a 7.62 and it will kill deer, mule dear, and even larger critters have been killed with this round (especially if a 180 gr soft point is used).

The AK-47's 7.62 x 39 FMJ will also go through walls, floors, steel doors, ceilings, ... ; however, it hasn't the range nor the energy of the 7.62 x 51 NATO. The 7.62 x 39 AK is a superior round to the 5.56 NATO. Me, I don't like the rifles that fire the 7.62 x 39 round. The Ruger Ranch Rifle in 7.62x39 is a superior rifle than the same rifle in 5.56 NATO/.223Rem -- more accurate, more reliable, and more powerful (there were problems with the Ranch Rifle in .223; maybe they've solved the problems, but I don't know).

Yep, the idiots in the mainstream media get all incensed about military rifles and ammunition; however, deer rifles firing hunting ammunition are FAR MORE DEADLY. There's not even a passing resemblance in killing power.

If someone manages to live after being shot through the abdomen or especially the thoracic cavity with a deer rifle firing hunting ammunitioin, then it's some sort of miracle -- it's happened, but it is profoundly unlikely. The wound a deer hunting round makes is mind-numbingly horrific to witness. The tissue surrounding the hunting bullet's path through the body has all of the blood vessels and nerves destroyed; so in surgery, all of that devitalized tissue must be debrided (cut out, else it will just rot in the body). "Blood'n'gore on the floor, get out the buckets, boys!" I'm not kidding. You've not seen anything until you've witnessed blood and pus run out of a human body, through the drapes, off the table, down into a stainless steel bucket. Fun, fun.

Old Gzr: Looks like home invasion numbers are being reduced. Many more homes now have electronic security and millions more Americans have been purchasing defensive firearms. Most folk do not report people attempting to break into their home because they have chased them off with a gun and people don't want to talk to cops about their using a gun in self-defense. The cops WILL confiscate that firearm and in communist states, the cops will take all of the firearms in the house of the innocent home-defender and never return those firearms. I never reported the fellow trying to get into my home at 3 am one night. They would certainly not have taken my shotgun, however; this was in the South.

Felons DO however tell other felons about getting a gun pulled on them. Word gets around and certain neighborhoods start getting avoided by felons. OR, the break-ins stop, but the rate of theft of items left outdoors still stays too high.
