You don't need to carry it around in your wallet, right? Makes it harder for people to steal your money, huh? Well, while yes it keeps pick pockets out of business that doesn't mean your digital money is safe. You know hackers steal money from people's accounts all the time?

But hackers shouldn't be your only concern. According to a blog post I saw somewhere on the net, the government is also very much interested in stealing some of your money. Whether those allegations are true or not, the fact is if you have money in you Paypal account, Bitcoin wallet, or elsewhere as long as it can be accessed online, that money can be stolen.

The best way to be prepared for such an eventuality is by having some cash at home. Get a safe. Withdraw some cash from your account and hide it there. You never know when you'll need it.

Bitcoin wallets can be stored offline, John Snort. To backup them and prevent data corruption, you save several key access copies in a USB or hard drive and hide wherever you want.

I have been using paypal since two years and my money has never stolen. I have used payza since two years, and I regularly withdraw money from payza to my bank. I have been using bitcoin and I have never encountered any problem. In my experience, it is safe to do online transaction. Good thing about paypal and payza is you can ask for refund if transaction goes wrong. In most cased you will get a refund. However, you should secure your account.

Money can almost always be confidently protected no matter what its form, digital or not. It's a matter of common sense and a little bit of research. For example, if you keep all of your money in bags under your bed, all it takes is a simple burglar to enter your house while you're away to steal from you. If you store your money in Paypal and visit sketchy websites, downloading things you don't fully understand and trust, without proper browser configuration, addons, and so forth.. Well, all it takes is a simple keylogger to empty your Paypal account.

Both situations can be avoided with a little proper planning. Yes, there is always a small chance you can still be robbed, but that is with essentially every kind of money holding to some extent. I firmly believe that online holdings are no less safe than physical assuming you take proper steps in securing them.

Online currencies are so much safer than live, in-person cash. You can't protect your cash from everyone. Eventually, you'll run out of bullets. However, at the same time, if you are worried about online currencies being unstable, they I would highly recommend BitCoin. You need to really look into the nuts and bolts of how they operate and why they are more financially stable than say Paypal. Plus, if you are that scared of Big Brother, you can store your BitCoins offline tangibly if you would like.

It's a good idea to invest in Bitcoin because you can simply save the currency on a hard disk or USB, somewhere that you only have access to. As for PayPal.. I know it's online money but come on, they won't steal from you unless you do shady stuff with your money. They're a big enough company and what would be the point if they were stealing money? They're already worth billions.

Digital currency can be stored securely through cloud computing services. Because of the inherent possibility of hackers constantly trying to break into people's accounts, there are several layers of security encrypted to protect bitcoin wallets. In fact, I have not heard of a single case of a hacker succeeding with bitcoin. The rule one can observe to beat hackers is very simple and time tested: create long complex and constantly changing passwords.

I'm totally in favor of this kind of service (and I have no doubt that this is the future... it's just a matter of time :D). I already have a digital wallet (PayPal) for many years and I think the comforts that I get using it are very good (mainly on the issue of not having to walk with printed money). Besides that, I have no complaints about that system. It's pretty effective and useful.

The bitcoin and a lot of crypto currencies work in such a way that you can store your wallet on your personal computer or smartphone. With that, I think one is done with the hassle of having to have to store your cash in a safe or something. And yes, digital currencies are the future.

Cash is hard to track, thus god-government wishes it banned. Buying survival items? If so, you are the enemy of the collective.

"Israel's War On Cash Is About To Get More Drastic"

    https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/israels-war-cash-about-get-more-drastic

"Starting Monday, it will be a criminal offense in Israel to pay more than the equivalent of $1,700 in cash to a business or $4,360 in cash to individual, as the government intensifies its ongoing war on tangible money.

"It's a war that began in earnest with the 2018 passage of the Law for the Reduction in the Use of Cash. Israeli businesses and individuals began facing limits on cash transactions in January 2019. However, on Aug 1, those limits are being slashed nearly in half."

There is a thing at law....little known to the average person in any country...and it is called...."Coin of the Realm."

We are never to know of the precedent at law of this kind of thing or knowledge. We are supposed to think government knows best in everything.

History shows that it is government itself which debases the coinage/monies of every country and eventually turns it into a system by which government itself can control the herd...control the people....insiders versus the outsiders...fedualism...royalty.

Eventually it becomes a system of control of supply and demand........how much everyone gets in every and anything...total control of the marketplace....feudalism...royalty.

Historically....government is the worst possible caretaker of anything...versus something like the free market...

Need proof....look at Soviet Russia and now even Communist China...

And this is where our leadership would like to take us...just like the Olde Soviet Union.

Israel is demonstrating that It's economy and management is failing as well....they just cannot let most people know how desperate they are to maintain control.

And it will so become here in America and in the same pattern...of lies and deceit in what is happening...and or being manufactured....socially and economically...in favor of more government at the expense of free market economics.
It is happening here right now in America if one knows the pattern.

Money...coin of the realm .. is resl thing....a real item ...a measure ...purity....quantity of a real thing...not just numbers on a piece of paper..or a phony accounting system.....substituting for money but putting power and control in the hands of government via a phony banking/accounting system.

When you go to greedy power hungry type of government operating under the guise of "We know what is best for everyone."...government soon enough takes on the character of dictator....controlling everything and anything in your life....with no other views, opinions, and understandings tolerated...while they teach and preach....Diversity, inclusiveness, and tolerance.

Because money is now a system of accounting...they know what most are doing with their monies....and move to control how much and how often people can buy...make purchases.

Soon enough it will be down to controlling what kinds of cars people drive....or take public transportation...ride bicycles...

Because they know by the electronic fingerprints we leave when we make purchases.

Digital currency will complete this control......totally.

This is why real monies ensures freedom and liberty if the government does not so debase the currency.....and thus create inflation...

If it hit the fan do you truly believe your paper money would be anymore valuable than toilet paper? lets say its hit the fan, you have ten tins of spam and someone offers you $1000 for it and another person offers 50lb of rice...which would you take?

You trade money whether paper or electronic for goods you want its as simple as that and both options could be cut off very easily if the powers that be deem necessary.

If the good people are armed, then they are the "powers that be". Gang-bangers haven't the intelligence nor the discipline to form cohesive structures. Post-SHTF, some gangs will survive, but they will be in the minority. When the police go away, citizens will take out the trash. At least in the South and in the "American Breadbasket" the citizens will. All city-dwellers will be out of luck.

Paper currency will be good for a few days, maybe weeks, months on the outside. Junk silver coins and jewelry will be good for a while longer. Flash gold and you'd better have some serious backup. Ammo will be used for trade for a while, but you'll have to have more than you need yourself. Many Americans have tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition. A college professor of mine (Math guy) had fully automatic weapons in his basement. Once got a guy to roll a few hundred rounds of .357 for me. That fellow must have had eight Big gun safes full of weaponry and stacks of ammo. One friend of mine made his own rifle receivers in his basement -- had a machine-shop down there. Lord knows I don't have what they had. Two of those fellows are now rather dead. I'm starting to give-away sell-off what I don't need. I've got/had ammo for which I had no rifle. Anybody need any 8mm Mauser?! :D I've only got 150 to 200 rnds; but still, I sold off an 8mm Mauser and I'm not going to replace it.

Widows sell-off their dead husband's rifles and ammo. Such sales get scooped-up rather quickly. Had a friend from the Punjab. Man, did I ever get him a super deal on a couple of weapons at an estate sale (at the county courthouse, cash and carry; you got the money = nobody cares from where it is you came).

Throughout history, there has always been trade/barter. Currency was used in the NAZI death camps.

    "It’s the nation’s crises in a can.

"Inflation and crime have gotten so bad in Gotham that even cheap meat like Spam has to be locked up.

"At Duane Reade’s store in the Port Authority bus depot, the shelf-stable product — only $3.99 a can — is now being stocked in plastic, anti-theft cases.

“'I’ve never seen that before!”\' one cashier laughed while using a magnet to remove a can of Spam from its cage.

"The cashier was among the employees, tourists and store regulars stunned that the iconic blue-and-yellow cans are now being kept under lock-and-key — some even poking fun at the sight as 'a sort of Jeff Koons homage,' per one viral tweet.

"Jenny Kenny, 43, who was visiting from Louisville, KY, was aware of the ongoing crime waves hitting cities like New York and San Francisco, but still couldn’t believe the sight of 'so many things in boxes.'”

    -------------------------

Shoplifting is now an everyday/everywhere event in cities like San Fransisco and Chicago. De-funding the police and excusing "oppressed" people for doing whatever they wish has led to chaos.

dont kid yourselves about trading/bartering, when everything goes south it wont be safe to be even near anyone else outside of your group or family, things will be manic for awhile and most people wont have anything to trade anyway, a lot of survivors will literally have what they stand up in and no more, cities and large towns will be places to avoid not enter. trading wont be possible for a long time, years not months or weeks and in a total event probably decades.

you never said a truer word than this. very few people realise this will happen.
paper and coins might be okay for a short while if one had them put back , but even this will be short lived.
access to bank accounts and card machines could be shut down within 24 hours of event X.

I gotta disagree with you here lonewolf...because history demonstrates differently...

Now I agree with you in that things will be manic for awhile...but eventually some sanity will prevail.....simply because the alternative is unsustainable...to those who still have some common sense left in them.

What people have to use as coin.....willl be skills...knowledge mixed with some common sense...and something often missing from people who have primarily a television and or movie education in emotional instant gratification values and expectations.

Whatever is the most swappable will become money...

Whenever an economy collapses people will decide amongst themselves what or for what they will carry on commerce. Whatever is the most used commodity in exchange for their goods and or services will becomes money.

Government spending whores and pimps never want the public to know this history....and in that manner you will become dependent on their good will...while they sell yours and your families very souls for their political lucre.

When the money system collapses ....and or becomes useless...in trade...people will eventually decide amongst themselves for what they will trade their goods and services.

And also historically ...the tendency of all governments is to debauch the monies...into worthlessness...
We are never to know this history as well...while we are fed distraction after distraction ...after distraction...to prevent thinking and or real knowledge..

I dont agree Chris, all the old skills that would be useful in a TEOTWAWKI world are mostly all gone, well in Britain they are, if it isnt computer skills or comes through a phone screen then its long been abandoned, nobody knows where their food comes from, how any food plant is grown or how one butchers an animal.
once the event happens the human race in Britain will be decimated and only a small handful will survive, and it will be the same in all the westernised countries.
look after our own and to hell with all the rest. when the systems that govern peoples lives collapse it will collapse big time, most people wont make it because they have nothing to fall back on .
self sufficiency and self reliance are the watchwords , if you havent got something learn to live without it. trading is basically relying on others having something you lack, as they say in the Army, thats Piss Poor Planning. besides there may be no other survivors in your area, nobody - apart from me- ever seems to consider that one do they?
keep it basic and keep it simple.

Reading through the posts found a variety of thoughts of what currency , digital , paper , metal or barter will look like after electricity is no more . It is good to try to envision the future and prepare accordingly . We all may have the answer to the money question next week , At least those that are still alive .

I think currency would be the least of our problems post electricity, most if not all forms of commerce needs some kind of electric supply to function, if there is no electric many things wont work including tills and traffic lights, petrol pumps and automatic doors, elevators and lifts.

Real money does not need any kind of electricity or backing....and that is important. Real money also never needs to be backed by anything.....

The only reason one backs currency is that it is not real money but the appearane of money....a token.....

Real money never needs to be backed...it is...in toto.

The Real Silver American Silver dollars I have in my pocket....three of them....never need to be backed....ever...

And so to the Silver Canadian Maple leaf in the same pocket..

As to commerce needing electritity.....surely you jest.....

However ...did our forefathers survive without electricity??? They must have just fell over in the streets in despair and perished!!??

Ever heard of a thing called a manual override????

a manual override hasnt been used in Britain for many years/decades. all modern commerce now goes through computers and the internet, banking is online, bill paying is online, remove electricity so the internet goes down and nothing will move not even money transactions.
sure your forefathers survived without electricity but they were woodsmen and frontiersmen, modern people cannot function without electricity, mobile phones, computers and facebook, twitter and the rest, and they will all go to pieces without these things.

Cash is king. Well it is to me! This morning I was out picking up all sorts of supplies before Winter arrives. All paid for with cash. ‘The System’ has no idea where all those goods have gone,as there is no digital trail.

Sure, in a collapse, cash too will become worthless.Eventually. The day that the power goes out,all those who use only cards or phones or ( dear god!) watches ,will be scuppered. For a short while, perhaps a couple of days, traders will still take cash, until it becomes obvious that the system has collapsed. That gives me.the cash man, 24 to 48 hours to spend what I have available to me,and turn the paper into tangible goods.

    Probably true in most places.

I am biased due to the culture in which I was raised. Here in Southern Appalachia, the people have had to struggle through innumerable tragedies -- witness the flooding that just devastated Kentucky (entire communities washed away, death count is at 38 and more are still unaccounted for). When these things happen, the people pull together. Volunteerism is weaved into the culture. Combat military units are awash with soldiers with a Southern accent. Families experiencing deaths, house-fires, horrific diseases have dozens of their fellow Church members coming to their aid. Helping others is "what you do". Those who stay to themselves are shunned. Irrespective of the level of devastation, Southerners pull together. I have innumerable stories.

Outsiders find Southerners odd and difficult to understand. The rules of living here are not written down, yet are strict. One is expected to act honorably ... or else.

Due to many having Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA government agency) power, many Southerners know what it is like going without power for protracted periods. (Government could screw-up the engineering and manufacture of a brick -- this is why the government usually farms projects out to industries.) In the mountains during the winter, if you are dependent on electricity for your heating ... good luck with that.

Another matter in this region is that people are mightily independent. Many of my co-workers have been paramedics / EMTs. A large number of people do welding, farming, construction work, work with heavy machinery, ... . There are thousands of square miles of fertile soil. There is timber and the lumber mills. People have wood stoves, gardens, and can repair most things around their house. Hardware stores and garden centers are plentiful. Gun ownership and the ability to use them is universal.

While living in the rural MidWest, I also witnessed much of this; however in the SouthEast (especially Southern Appalachia) this sort of culture is very pronounced.

I've seen very little of this up North. Yet I've seen it in rural Massachusetts and upstate New York. I would say that the more rural one goes, the more cooperation one will witness. My wife lived in Ohio for a few years in her childhood and tells me that there was no comparison in the friendliness here and there. I will say this, when it hits the fan, people in the South will NOT put up with outsider behaviors. Southerners rile easily. Act in any way arrogant and you will be an outcast -- push it and you will be injured ... or possum food up in the mountains somewhere.

The major cities in America are already a debacle. America's enemies have no need to waste their nuclear bombs on our cities. Turn off their electricity and they'll instantly lose their minds.

America is in no way, shape, form, or fashion one culture. It is really not one country. At its inception, this was realized, thus the independence of the individual states was written into our Constitution.

"More recently, in a 1997 interview, former Senator and Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb observed of his own Southern, Scotch-Irish heritage, that 'we have been soldiers for 2,000 years. The military virtues have been passed down at the dinner table.' Research suggests, as Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker chronicles in The Better Angels of Our Nature, that the South has a distinct history of violence and a culture of honor that can be traced back to the Scotch-Irish herders who settled there — more belligerent than farming communities because they must protect their flocks — and that still persists today. Could this culture of honor and military tradition help explain the Southerners’ disproportionate numbers in the U.S. armed forces?"

Now Olde Geezer.....remember now....only Kalifornia and New York are America......everything else is flyover country.

We have a higher duty and obligation to take the lead from New York and Kalifornia....for they are truly America....everything else does not exist.....or doesn't count.

New York and Kalifornia are the model for America now....and history will be obediently re written to accomodate this gaslighting.

I like the term "fly-over America". Centuries ago, I had a work-mate commuter-mate who got his certification and became an air traffic control guy. This is what he'd done in the Air Force. He didn't work the hubs. He stacked/vectored aircraft over the "fly-over" states. Somebody's got to keep planes from violating each others air space.

I don't trust banks or governments. In a REAL shtf event, cash will be king for a very short period of time. Then diamonds, gold and silver, again for a very short period of time. Once the true realization that the event will be long lasting, if not permanent, then commodities and services will become the new coin of the realm. Barter / exchanges will consist of ---- Do you have something I need and do I have something to offer you? Example" I may have an abundance of fresh food, from my garden, to offer you but you had a bumper crop from your garden, so there is not trade. Now if you did not have a garden or your harvest was inadequate, then we might make a deal. What somebody may value or need, another may not. There will not be a general accepted currency, when it finally all collapses.

    Yep.

How quickly and how far things degrade will depend on where you live. Need I say that the cities will go feral rather quickly. Most places in Heartland America will stay relatively civilized (yet far more impoverished than before); however, one can't count on that. I know rural communities (nowheresville) where the sheriff's department wouldn't go into. One in particular. In a region of that county, the trash would saw down trees behind investigating deputies. THEN, a new sheriff came on board. He got M14 rifles from the Division of Civilian Marksmanship and went in there with his better-armed deputies and kicked @$$ and took names. Civilization returned to that holler. (Note that the good people living up in there were way past just being poor.)

in a relatively low population rural area I do not expect the survival numbers to be very high, low population now will mean an even lower number post collapse, if someone has not planned and prepared even if they do survive they will have nothing to trade with, and there wont be many with skills, most people these days have a job that is computer related and once that goes down their skills are non existent. all the old trades have been abandoned as being old fashioned and no longer required in the 21st century. so trading just wont happen and for most it wont be safe, I still say trading is relying on others for something one lacks and thats not how I intend to live post collapse.
I think a lot of people are expecting (or hoping) things will be back to normal after a short while, but what if this is not possible, not even likely in our lifetimes? the mortality rate in that case will be huge and trading/bartering will just be some wishful pipe dream, anyone expecting to live post collapse in a similar manner to the way they did before with others to do the things they cant is in for a rude awakening.

You members want to have an interesting conversation......talk to someone who has been to countries over and over....wherein the type of money ...currency..paper monies changes every time they go there. They have to exchange their olde monies for the new issue. Talk about economic instability.

Talk to someone who survived the collapse of their nation...Germany and or Japan and how they survived the collapse of their money system. We here in America have lived in relative stability as compared to many natoins...but it will not last long when the main function of governnent today and in increasing urgency is to control the Herd..by sustaining lie after lie after lie. and deceit....to keep and maintain power. And access to an unlimited money supply is how they do it...unlimited financing.

Be Warned these Ishmaelites who would seek to put and keep us into bondage.

Hint......take notice of the continued attempts to find out what firearms people own....or control the flow of ammunition....gunpowder and or reloading supplies even the holsters you buy.. They will become scarce and more and more controlled

Soon enough it will be auto parts....expensive ...then certain foods...et al.

Talk to me Chris I've travelled extensively and guess more than any other member here. In EU member countries there is one currency, the Euro € which makes life easy travelling around Europe. These days pretty much wherever you go you have ATMs and you just put your card in, tap in a pin and out comes your cash whether your in Thailand or Japan wherever, ATMs are there (although I only use them inside of a bank and always have more than one card I can use).

I believe cash/gold et al will be worthless after the big event that hits the globe strikes, what use are they when commerce has broken down? Money are simply tokens, a promise of value that you trade with today, no commerce, no shops/markets and your cash and coins are worth nothing; food will be money, knowledge/skills will be money...things you need and use and or consume will be money.

    Agree with you here Max...

However....there is an inherent problem with digital currency which is also a variation of fiat..and paper currency.

And that is Government over printing and over issuance...in favor of government.

There is also the danger of being socially and politically looked out of your accounts....even without a day in court and a jury of your peers....mere administrative judgements...meaning political judgements....

This one watch out for big time. This is not an issue in paper cash or precious metal coinage....coin of the realm.

Precious metals and or coinage leaves governments by the wayside as one of governments major occupations historically is to debase the currency in favor of government.

Any serious read of history of currency/monies in the hands of government will confirm this.

As government morphs more and more into totalitarian/dictatorship......taking peoples property is also one of their major occupations...and money is property....as stated in numerous court cases here in this counstry...

    Remember Keynes...

Digital currency will change nothing here.

We are not being told by most of our phony media as to which countries are forcing digital currency on their people and now locking them out of their accounts...

Be warned these Ishmaelitess would by subtilty attempt to push us into digital currency as a further method of wholesale herding.....lack of liberties.....if you exert your freedoms without governnent approval...

Exactly what is happening now in the UK.....

And the average Kardashian ....ESPN trained American has not a clue...as our MSM will avoid this topic...including the fabeled and phony Fox News.

In the USA there's always been two economies -- legal and underground.

In today's USSA economy, guess what, the underground economy is growing by leaps and bounds. The Central Intelligence Agency has always supplemented their funding via narcotics and gun-running. That will certainly not change.

Now, the hoi poloi will have to increasingly go dark on their transactions. That was my dad and his brothers' world. Nothing new to me.

Silver had dropped, but now it is heading back up. Wanna by junk pre-1964 coins? Now's the time.

Ammo is showing back up in stores. Wanna supplement what you already have, what you've shot-up at the range during the covid B.S.? Now's the time.

I reckon I'll sell/distribute ammo that I'll not need. Too much weight. Need to get this stuff in the hands of young men, young hunters and patriots. I'm heading off to finish what time on Earth I have left. Bugging out'a here.

My dead visit me in my dreams. Last chapter. Time to go. Exit stage left.

Sure is nicer over there. Seen glimpses. The one big thing that gets you damned in the next world is ego/pride. If one is arrogant, then just wrap a big chain around your neck and hook it to a battleship anchor to prepare for the next world. Divinity sees all ... except souls who are prideful. God doesn't damn anyone. The damned damn themselves. All of the life after death accounts affirm this. I may not do so well in the next world, but I am absolutely certain that spoiled deeply-arrogant souls such as yourself will be lost beyond the grave. Have your fun now.

    Olde Geezer....

The Olde Ones..the economics professor who had the ability to teach and think outside the controlled boxes.....taught me that the so called White Market was the pbony marketplace...the heavily controlled and regulated marketplace...it was not free market..

The Black Market was the real free marketplace....where people freely made deals on their own..without government interference...

Government propaganda would have us believe that the Black Market is all nefarious dealings....and that is total hogwash.....

I know this because much of government dealings is of the nefarious types.and also our government is one of the biggest arms gun dealers in the world.....and they do not trust us with guns??? Wow!!

People making deals for anything .such as the woman I occasionally call to come by and cut my hair...is free market...and I am glad of it and happy to pay her for a house call. The nefarious part is that government is not in the deal, and I am happy about that....I love free market...just me and with whom I decide to do business.

Yes...silver is going back up but I will still buy it..

I hope reloading equipment becomes more available....and soon.

As the old saying goes, "A person at age 20 who isn't a socialist has no heart. A person who at age 40 is still a socialist has no brain." Used to, most people eventually grew up. Not anymore. Preppers live in the dangerous world where herds of "perpetual childhood" idiots roam freely. Thus, many/most preppers "get the hell out of Dodge."

Digital currency is the ultimate government control. At the push of a button, the government can cut off all access to YOUR, fuel, food, shelter, transportation and every other life sustaining component.

Maybe, in a way, this might be a good thing ... darkly speaking.

When the power grids get fried by enemy EMP weapons or another mondo solar flare heads in the direction of Earth(which would likely also cook satellites), god government won't be able to pay their goons to oppress the people.

Let's use the internet now. Soon, all of this will be toast.

Cops are quitting now because they are not being paid sufficiently to justify them risking their lives and freedom (one mistake and they are deemed racist, sued, lose their homes & pensions). Times get hard, they WILL NOT go to work out of the kindness of their hearts. Only Russia and China can back their paper currencies with gold, warheads, ... i.e. real things. Yet even given this, witness Russia today, their troops have had it, they are without motivation -- what currency would they take to fight?

Over 95% of humans are social beings. People trade. When they don't have an even swap they use currency. Historically, rare commodities and commodities that have unique attributes (silver is the best conductor of electricity and it kills bacteria). Rebuilding a civilization will require certain items and these things will be hold value.

In the NAZI death camps, currency was used among those who would soon be dead.

During the worst circumstances that have occurred on this planet, people bartered or used items as currency that were difficult to obtain.

Me, I'm gonna have something to pay for medications and medical service. NO ONE can prevent accidents that injure. The ready vulnerability of the human body to injury and/or disease cannot be pretended away.

Wolves are pack animals and so are we. Lone wolves are wolves who split with one pack to later on join up with another pack.

A pack of wolves can kill larger animals and can defend themselves in a superior fashion than an individual. Wolves and humans are without eyes in the back of their heads. Killing an individual is FAR easier than killing a pack of animals or humans.

One thing that wolf packs do is to cull-out the weak or those members who do not fit-in. We humans will have to do this post-SHTF.

I don't trust most people. Most people are stupid and are utterly bereft of insight. Such people I avoid like the plague. But I've in my life known people who have stuck with me as if they were family. A workmate of mine (we worked together for years) was as close to a brother as I have ever experienced. I pitch-in to help others. Today, I worked with three people who are "salt of the Earth." I also met a fellow today who I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw him. Some are good and some are evil. My dad had a business associate in whom I had zero trust (even at the age of 14, I knew he was human excrement; in the gambling business, there's no shortage of them; as a teenager I was counting the money in gambling houses and in one brothel). The dirty guy ended-up blowing another guy's head off (an innocent man; not the trash who deserve to be killed). I was in no way shocked when dad told me what the guy did. Another guy in the business, I thought was goofy. He wrapped his car around a tree (dead meat; stupid!, he wasn't even on a liquor run) -- we lost that location also, i.e. money down the drain.

We in the decades of our lives must learn discernment.

95% of human beings MAY be social animals, its the herd instinct, I am not one of them, I do not trust other people AT ALL.
in a collapsed world I am not going to trust anyone and I'm going to be as far away from others as possible.
expecting others to have what we lack after some catastrophe is just laughable, and shows bad judgement and lack of planning, trading post event wont be possible or even safe until long after most of us are long gone, trying to trade after an event is just asking to get our throats cut.

Its a shame you trust anyone LW, perhaps if you'd served in the forces you'd value the strength trust in (some selected) others and their trust in you provides...trust goes above and beyond team work.

I did have 3 or 4 people probably the only ones I would trust in a collapsed world, but they have all moved on 20 years ago and are no longer part of my life.
trust has to be earned not given away freely, not everyone is trustworthy and any error in judgement could be fatal.
better to be all alone than get a knife in the ribs one dark night.
