In a pure survival situation it's understandable that no or limited resources and equipment will be available needed to clean your water.
Otherwise, what do need? 5 gallon buckets are dirt cheap anywhere. Sand & gravel can be found in your back yard. You can collect charcoal right from your campfire.
Some amount of work is required to survive, but it's not rocket science, LOL

 

You’re quite right about dysentery, my Gt Uncle died of it on the Death Railway in WW2.
